The Book Of Remembrance: Fulfilling A Pledge To Remember And Record “Remembrance Is The Secret of Redemption” Baal Shem Tov As part of our pledge to remember our grandparents, brothers, sister, uncles, aunts and communities of Jews we were deprived of ever knowing, we created this book as a fitting memorial. Since there are no graves over which one can say “Kaddish”, our Book Of Remembrance serves as “paper cemetery”. And so that our history will not be rewritten and distorted we also pledge to record and document. Every year that passes, there is an increased effort to charge history and deny our Jewish martyrs their lives as well as their deaths. As there is no No Official Record for most of those who died a martyr’s death at the hands of Nazis and their collaborators, our Book Of Remembrance functions as our historical documentation.

The Format The Association of Children of Holocaust of Holocaust Survivors, in cooperation with Yad VaShem in Jerusalem and Spertus Museum of Chicago, spent four years collecting information for the book. Relatives or friends of almost four thousand victims filled out “Pages of Testimony” which contained pertinent biographical information on each individual and circumstances of his/her death. We coordinated our procedures with the methods employed by Yad VaShem and sent the original of each “Page of Testimony” to their archives. Copies were stored at Spertus Museum and the files of the Holocaust Memorial Center in Skokie. Information is listed alphabetically by the last name of the person who submitted the information. Beneath the name of the survivor or child of survivors, each page of The Book Of Remembrance contains the victims’ names, dates and places of birth, and circumstances of death. Maiden names are indicated by parenthesis ( ). The format will make information about families accessible to future generations.

Artwork Under the handmade cover are over forty drawings by eight Chicago area artists. Each piece depicts one of the books’ themes. Shoah: Destruction of a world Kaddish: Our Legacy to Remember and Remind Indifference: Silence and other Accomplices Resistance: Jewish Physical and Spiritual Defiance 1

Hope: A Vision of Redemption

The Association Of children Of Holocaust Survivors Who We Are We are nothing alike, but have everything in common. Our members range in age from twenty to forty years and have varied educational backgrounds and professions. We are doctors, lawyers, teachers, businessmen, artists and artisans with diverse political affiliations, interests, and lifestyles. Despite our diversity, we share a unique perspective, unspoken understanding, and we inherit the same legacy. We are the first generation born after the Shoah. Some f us were born in Europe among the ashes of our destroyed Jewish communities. Most of us were named after slain family members. All of us have heard in our parents words and silences the anguish of the unspeakable. In their eyes we saw images of people and a way of life loved and lost=images which burned indelible impressions in our souls.

Our Legacy Along with thousands of other children of survivors around the world, we accept the obligation of our unique position in history, and we affirm our pledge: To Remember not only that annihilated Jewish life but also that dedication to beauty, human dignity, tradition, love and life in the midst of Hell itself and to commemorate spiritual strength when logic dictated despair. To Educate ourselves and the community about the Holocaust period, attempting to further understand events that defy comprehension. We also aim to foster a greater awareness and appreciation of the rich, multifaceted, Jewish cultural life that perished in the flames of camps and ghettos throughout Europe. Resist anti-Semitism and racism in whatever form they take. We hope to serve as the link between young and old, American and European born, Jew and non- Jew in the fight against hateful dogmas as they rise again. To Support each other as we examine the impact of the holocaust on our lives and the lives of holocaust survivors. By sharing our experiences we not only gain personal understanding and mutual support, but also respect and admiration for our parents, who emerged from the Kingdom of Death and, by having us, “chose life”. 2
