Doughnut or Donut? Doughnut is technically the proper term, but donut is also acceptable. If you look in older dictionaries, you will only find doughnut, however, the Merriam-Webster dictionary does list donut as another way to say doughnut.

What even is a doughnut? The doughnut is described (by Merriam-Webster dictionary) as a small, usually ring-shaped sweet piece of fried dough. Many different cultures have their own variations of doughnuts, but as a part of our project, we created a Doughnut Recipe Book composed of a multitude of recipes derived from the internet. Some of the doughnuts that we included were classic, such as a common glazed doughnut, or a baked doughnut, but we also decided to add untraditional doughnuts, untraditional mostly because instead of being sweet, we decided to mix it up and put in recipes for savory doughnuts made with herb and cheese based ingredients (which shows the expansion of the doughnut’s definition).

Where did doughnuts come from? The origin of donuts is heavily controversial. Even though the specific place, time, and person responsible for the creation of donuts are unknown, there are a lot of events in donut history that stand out. The Dutch Doughnut - In as early as the mid 19th century, the Dutch were making olykoeks, or “oil cakes.” These were essentially balls of cake fried in pork oil until they were golden brown. Because the inside often couldn’t cook as much as the outside, the oil cakes were sometimes stuffed with nuts, fruits, or other types of fillings that didn’t need cooking. When the Dutch immigrants started to settle into the US, they kept making their olykoeks, and they were influenced by other cultures and continued to evolve into what we now know as donuts today. 5

What are doughnuts made of? Traditionally, most doughnuts are usually made out of all the same things; yeast/ flour, sugar, baking powder, milk, butter, a seasoning of some sort (optional) and cooking oil, however, for some recipes, there tend to be other, untraditional ingredients depending on what the chef is looking for. In olden times before the doughnut hole was invented, some doughnuts actually had nuts or some sort of filling stored in the center to help them cook thoroughly.

Doughnuts around the world There are many different foods around the world that resemble the normal modern doughnut. There's the beignet,, the Sfenj, Lokma, the Youtiao and many more. (The images are in the order of the names above.)

7

Why are doughnuts prominent and important today? Doughnuts are are a big staple of self indulgence, they’re sweet and simple, and besides that, easy to obtain. In the past, doughnuts were a delectable treat that was interestingly quite ‘class-distinctive’. They were considered a snack for someone who worked hard and they weren’t just something that many people could simply pick up to eat; until modern times rolled around. These days all it takes is a few dollars and a couple minutes for anyone to walk into a shop and buy themselves a doughnut.

8

Why are doughnuts popular? Have they been “gentrified?” Our millennialism based culture has gentrified doughnuts to an extent, and has created a multitude of new kinds of doughnuts; like the bacon doughnut. Because of so many types of new “boutique” doughnut shops are opening up, this gives people so many new ways to be creative with doughnuts and create new trends. Often these new popular types of doughnuts end up being higher priced because they are more “gourmet”.
