Strengthen Your Willpower and Self Discipline Willpower and self-discipline are important and useful skills in everyone’s life. We need them at work, at home, in our relations with people, and in our careers. They are two powerful engines that give us the inner strength to start doing things, and to persevere, until we accomplish them. Though everyone knows that willpower and self-discipline are invaluable skills, few do something to develop them. Methods for improving these skills are not common knowledge, and therefore, few people know to strengthen them. When have the knowledge and the techniques, you can develop these skills, and this is the purpose of this book. This is a practical manual, offering you special techniques and exercises. Most of the exercises take advantage of common, everyday situations and activities, making it unnecessary to set apart special times for practice. This means you can practice the exercises at any time or place. In this free book, you will find part of the first chapter, and a few sample exercises. 1. Willpower & Self-Discipline Are Within Your Reach Charging the Battery of Your Inner Strength Training your willpower and self-discipline is similar to training your body. In both cases, to achieve worthwhile results, you need to exercise and to invest time and effort. Do you walk, run, swim, or train at the gym? Exercising your body requires effort, and sometimes, is boring or uncomfortable. At times, especially when you are a beginner, you might prefer to do something else. However, you have no doubt that exercising your body improves your health and shapes your body, and is therefore, of great value. You invest time and effort for a good purpose. You “sacrifice” some comfort, to gain more rewarding results. It is the same with willpower and self-discipline. In both instances, you grow your strength. You increase your physical strength by training your body, and you increase your inner strength by training your willpower and selfdiscipline. Strengthening your willpower and self-discipline is also similar to working and earning money. You work for a whole month, even if this requires effort and occasional discomfort, but in return, you get paid. This enables you to pay your bills, spend money on what you want, and even save money. You invest time and effort to achieve a certain goal, which is money. You “sacrifice” some pleasure, and spend time and effort doing something, which sometimes is uncomfortable or unpleasant, to gain something worthwhile. You do the same when you train your willpower and self-discipline. These two skills resemble the electric current. Just as electric appliances need electricity to run, so you need willpower and self-discipline to move and make things happen. Willpower and self-discipline are the pillars of inner strength. This strength can be stored, and then used when necessary, just like a battery. When the battery of your inner strength is fully charged, you can use its power for any purpose and need. The exercises in this book will help you charge, and keep charging the battery of your inner strength. Practicing exercises that charge the battery of your inner strength might sometimes be uncomfortable, but the rewards are great. The exercises fill your battery with power, enabling you to be more assertive, decisive and strong. By charging the battery of your inner strength regularly, you will have plenty of power at your disposal, whenever you need it.
What Is Willpower? Willpower is a form of inner strength, expressed as the determination to act and carry out plans and decisions, despite internal resistance, laziness, discomfort, or external obstacles. Willpower appears as decisiveness, assertiveness and inner strength. It is the inner power that helps you ignore distractions, temptations, and disturbances, which prevent you from carrying out tasks and achieving goals. Willpower gives you the strength and confidence to say “yes" or "no," to express your opinions, and to agree or disagree with other people, without yielding to pressure or to other people’s opinions. Examples of willpower: · You decide to go for a walk, but discover that one of your favorite TV programs is about to start. What will you do? You may abandon your decision, and stay at home to watch the program, or stick to your decision and go for a walk. Choosing to go for a walk, despite your desire to watch the program is an act of willpower. · Imagine you are trying to lose weight. Friends invite you to a party at their home, and offer you a tasty and good-looking slice of cake. You need willpower to resist the temptation to eat the delicious cake, and to resist your friends’ insistence that you taste it. · Someone tells you a juicy secret, urging you not to pass it on. Can you resist the urge to share it with your spouse or friends? You need some willpower to do so. · You have to carry out an unpleasant task, or meet someone you don’t like. You may keep postponing the task or meeting the person you don’t like, and therefore, constantly worry about it. You can also choose to ignore the unpleasantness, and do what you need to do, without delay. · When you face difficulties, do you give up, or gather the strength to face and overcome them? Facing problems, dealing with them, and solving them, is an act of will. A strong willpower is not the privilege of a few select people. It is a skill, which everyone can strengthen with exercises and regular practice. Often, people wrongly confuse willpower with aggressiveness. This is incorrect, since these are two different things. Aggressiveness is a behavior that uses excessive force and no consideration of other people’s rights, while willpower is none of this sort.

What is Self-Discipline? Self-discipline is the companion of willpower. It appears as self-control, patience, and as the ability to avoid impulsive actions and unreasonable excess of anything. It grants you endurance, restraint and perseverance, and the ability to deal with inconvenience, hardships or obstacles. Examples of exercising self-discipline: · Arriving on time for meetings and appointments. · Keeping your promise to complete a project or finish some work at a certain hour or day. · Focusing your mind and energy solely on your work, and finish it on time, without allowing distractions to divert your attention. · Exercising self-discipline to follow through with your decision to lose weight, even if you have to give up your favorite snacks and foods. · Using self-discipline to abstain from smoking, despite the desire to smoke. · Exercising self-discipline, so you focus on your studies and avoid distractions and procrastination. · Being patient with people, at work, at home or with friends. These are just a few instances of using self-discipline. True self-discipline is not a punitive or restrictive lifestyle. It is a form of inner strength, necessary for dealing efficiently with the affairs of daily life, and for the pursuit of goals. It is synonymous with self-control, which is the ability to avoid unhealthy excess of anything. Self-discipline gives you the strength and the decisiveness to exchange immediate gratification and pleasure, for greater results, which need time and effort to gain. A person may be talented, bright and educated, but without selfdiscipline, he or she will not accomplish much. · You need willpower to take action and do things. · You need self-discipline to stick to your decisions and goals, and to persevere, until you carry them out.

Overcome negative habits, and have the strength and the discipline to build new, positive habits. 9. Have to courage to do new things. 10. Have the inner strength to exercise your body, despite laziness and the tendency to procrastinate. 11. Turn off your TV and go to sleep at a reasonable hour, and wake up early in the morning. 12. Always finish what you start. Strong willpower and self-discipline resemble two powerful engines that supply you with inner strength, energy and power. Without them, people, circumstances, and passing thoughts, would control your life and divert you from the path to achievement and success.

Exercises Developing willpower and self-discipline resembles physical training. You strengthen your muscles and shape your body by practicing exercises, and you strengthen your inner muscles of willpower and self-discipline, also by practicing exercises. The full version book contains many exercises for strengthening your willpower and self-discipline, and for increasing assertiveness, patience, perseverance and inner strength. Here are a few exercises from the book:
Exercise No. 1- Doing Things You Enjoy Doing · Is there a movie or a show that you would like to see, but you are too busy and don’t find the time for it? · Do you wish to go to a certain restaurant, park or beach, but always put this idea off? · Do you love eating a certain kind of meal, but are too lazy to cook it for you? · Do you love painting, decorating, singing in a choir, or dancing, but you are always too tired or busy, and never find the time to enjoy one of these activities? · What prevents you from enjoying the things you love doing? Do you feel that there are always other, more important and more pressing things to do? Give priority to something you love doing, even if you have to “sacrifice” other activities. 1. Decide which pleasurable activity you want to engage in. 2. Decide on the day and time. 3. Drop all other engagements for a while, and give priority to this activity. 4. Take care not to give in to laziness or procrastination. 5. Stick to your decision, and execute it as planned. This is not a difficult thing to do. It is not something out of your reach, and it does not require any special efforts. This exercise combines pleasure and gaining inner strength. Practice it often and you will enjoy your life, and at the same time strengthen your willpower and self-discipline, as well as your decisiveness and your determination.
Exercise No. 10 - Turning off the Music While listening to your favorite music, turn it off for a few minutes. You will most certainly be reluctant to do this, but it is an excellent exercise in decision-making and for self-discipline. Turn off the music, and prove to yourself that you can overcome your inner resistance. You will miss one song, but you would gain inner strength. Repeat this exercise for a week, whenever you listen to music, especially your favorite music. This exercise teaches you to overcome your inner resistance and strengthens your willpower and self-discipline.

Exercise No. 14 - Washing Dishes All day long, whenever you see dirty dishes, glasses or cutlery in your kitchen, wash them at once, without using the dishwasher. Don’t ask or wait for someone else to wash them. Just go and wash them, no matter how inconvenient this might be. Repeat this exercise for a few days, until you feel that it does not bother you to wash the dishes so often. This is exercise trains your willpower and self-discipline, and helps you overcome inner resistance and laziness.
Exercise No. 17 - Holding a Glass with Your Other Hand For the next few days, when you drink water, or any other drink, hold the glass in your other hand. If you are right-handed, hold the glass in your left hand. If you are lefthanded, hold the glass in your right hand. This exercise, will cause you some discomfort and an awkward feeling. Ignoring the discomfort, would increase your inner strength. Practice this exercise for a few days, until you no longer experience discomfort or inner resistance. The purpose of this exercise is to train you to overcome inner resistance, and to act, despite discomfort. If you can do such a simple act, in time, you will gain the power to do greater and more significant acts.

Exercise No. 36 - Peeling a Fruit 1. Take a knife, and a fruit with a peel, such as an apple or an orange. 2. Sit comfortably, and slowly peel it. 3. Start peeling the fruit from the upper side, going around the fruit, all the way to the bottom, trying to take off the peel in one piece. 4. At the end of the exercise, you should have the whole peel as one unbroken piece. The act of peeling the fruit slowly and patiently is what matters. It is okay if the peel breaks, and you don’t have in one piece. This simple exercise develops patience, attention and self-discipline.
