Woodford Halse Country Fair Success

A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make the Country Fair and Classic Vehicle Rally such a successful and fun day out in June. With a huge birthday cake to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday, it was a glorious day with brilliant live bands playing into the evening. A wonderful selection of classic vehicles were on display, and a range of animals were there to admire including some friendly Alpacas.

£1,400 of the proceeds was donated to the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, with the remainder going to St Mary’s Church. Together with funds raised in previous years, and a grant from the Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust, this has enabled the church porch to be re-roofed and we are delighted to announce that we are now in a position to be able to make plans to re-roof the Nave and Side Aisles of St Mary’s Church. So thank you for supporting the Country Fair and making this possible, and to Josephine and Jeremy Lincoln for so kindly hosting the event at the Mill House for the past 10 years. 2016 was the last time the event will be held at that particular location, so watch this space for details of new arrangements for next year. Debbie Jarvis.

A Privileged Tour Of An Historic Northamptonshire Residence - Drayton House (Lowick) On the 6th of July, a day with a pleasant respite from the recent rains, eleven members of the Woodford Halse History Society were treated to a guided tour of the fascinating, rarely open to the public, Drayton House in Lowick. This property has been occupied for around 1000 years and is still a home for the Stopford-Sackville family. After meeting up at the ‘Snooty Fox ‘ Inn for a relaxing lunch , the group arrived at the house to be met by Bruce Bailey, a recent contributor to the Society’s many talks, who gave us a summary of the house’s history. The house gained its name from Simon de Drayton in the 13th century and it was originally a fortified, castellated structure, still obvious today. It was modified over the centuries with medieval additions and finally an Elizabethan wing. We were escorted on a tour of the sumptuously decorated and furnished rooms by Judith Hodgkinson, an extremely knowledgeable historian. We were overwhelmed by the rare and priceless objects on view (surreally juxtaposed by the owner’s Harley Davidson motor cycle, parked in the dining room!). There are exquisite tapestries and painted ceilings; Japanese lacquered cabinets; tables inlaid with metals and precious stones; endless portraits of previous incumbents, including an original by Van Dyck. The formal Parterre gardens were immaculate and enclosed by rare examples of intricate, French wrought-iron work. As the sun descended, we left with the sight of a red kite circling over this timeless vista. For those interested in joining our Society, for similar experiences, we meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Memorial Hall, Woodford Halse. (Next meeting 20th Sept. 2016 at 7.30 pm) Alan Bird Photograph: From left to right Back row - Frances Bird, Paul Richardson, Elizabeth Bird Alan Bird, Gordon Bird. Front row - Linda Negus, Liz Pym, Margaret Gascoigne, Judith Collett, Jenifer Fell, Julie Williams.

We meet every Monday evening in term time, 6pm-7pm at Byfield scout hut. If you are interested in joining brownies or registering your daughter for when she turns seven, please give me a call or register online by selecting ‘1st Woodford brownies’ on girl guiding online.
