Dear Students & Parents, At Buckley Park College we are proud of the variety of programs in place to ensure that you are given every opportunity to reach your full potential through participation, enjoyment and active learning. During the course of the year you will grow in confidence, independence and accomplishment. In our academic program you will undertake a range of subjects within the disciplines of English, Humanities, Science, Mathematics, Languages, The Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education. We expect you to grasp learning opportunities with an open mind and seek out ways to be actively involved in school life. A key feature of our Year 8 program is our trip to Tasmania and associated learning activities. This is a trip that students will remember long into the future. Active involvement at school also includes participation in co-curricular activities such as sporting teams, camps, debating club, student leadership, annual production, music ensembles and bands. We are ambitious for our young people as we prepare them to be the creators, discoverers and inventors of the future, participating as responsible and productive citizens committed to the achievement of a just and sustainable world. To achieve this ambition, our learning experiences are structured to build the capacity for: pursuing individual excellence brave, critical and creative thinking valuing original ideas and demonstrating enterprise and innovation acting honestly and ethically accepting both individual and collective responsibility contributing to community development committing to social justice tolerance, acknowledging diversity, respecting difference and encouraging distinctiveness developing powerful and positive interpersonal relationships optimism, considered risk-taking and perseverance respecting and preserving the environment meaningful life-long learning
Our college motto "Build Your Wings" reflects the approach we take to the development of students over the course of their secondary school years. YEAR 8 CURRICULUM OUTLINE THE ARTS UNIT: YEAR 8 ART At this level, students are given the opportunity to explore the principles and elements of design more extensively through experimentation using a variety of both two dimensional and three dimensional artworks. Students gain practical experience in a range of areas and media including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, digital media and collage. This unit also helps develop students’ understanding and use of a range of elements and principles of design. By using these techniques, students can see how information and ideas are communicated using images with or without text. Art appreciation in this unit encourages students to gain an understanding of specific cultural and historical contexts of works of art. Students evaluate their own and others’ artworks.

UNIT: YEAR 8 DRAMA In this unit students learn about the technical aspects of stage lighting, sound, makeup and costume design. Students will present a short devised dramatization of a piece of music or literature. Developing the dramatization requires research, selecting and structuring dramatic elements, rehearsing and presenting. Students record their experiences and observations of their own and others’ work in their drama journal. In acting workshops students focus on developing voice and movement skills. They learn to analyse performances and view and review a theatre production. Students learn about Medieval Theatre through a study of morality plays.

UNIT: YEAR 8 MUSIC The Year 8 music course focuses on Rock Music through listening, analysis, research, performance and composition of various Rock styles. Students will develop basic skills on the drums, guitar, and bass throughout the semester with several performance tasks of notable rock songs and riffs. Different Rock styles are listened to and analysed to explore the elements of Rock Music and several small research tasks are completed to give students a better understanding of the instruments and genres of Rock. Music technology is used to recreate and compose simple Rock elements and also to

introduce basic music theory concepts. The semester concludes with a group task in which students form small bands with the instruments they learned during the semester, or already play, and learn to play a Rock song which is then performed for the class.

ENGLISH UNIT: YEAR 8 ENGLISH In this unit students learn to use language appropriately and effectively for different audiences, purposes and contexts. In listening and speaking activities they explore challenging ideas in formal and informal contexts such as presentations and discussion groups. In shared and individual reading they explore a range of texts. Students learn to write in a number of different modes, including persuasive, expository and creative, to present challenging ideas and information.

INTERVENTION UNIT: YEAR 8 ENGLISH SKILLS This unit is designed to strengthen core literacy skills to enable students to better meet the literacy demands of school. This unit is undertaken as an alternative to Languages. Students are involved in a program that focuses on reading for meaning, spelling and writing. They are also involved in speaking and listening activities.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (HAPE) UNIT: YEAR 8 HEALTH AND HUMAN RELATIONS In this unit students explore a range of issues regarding the growth and development of the adolescent. Some of the topics include drug and alcohol use, relationships, sexuality and values. Students identify strategies to deal with these issues and develop a range of skills to enable them to be active in the decision making process.

UNIT: YEAR 8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION This unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills in a wide variety of cooperative and competitive activities. Students will use these skills to implement movement sequences in a range of activities and sports focussing on movement and feedback to improve performance. In theory work students will explore the concepts of community programs, modified sports, circulatory and skeletal systems and biomechanics.

Requirements The college sport uniform is to be worn in all Physical Education classes and Sport classes and at all interschool and house sporting events.
UNIT: YEAR 8 SPORT In this unit students choose from a range of school and community based sports each term, as well as completing a five week swimming program (continuation from Year Seven Sport). They learn all aspects of the sport, including skills, rules, coaching, umpiring and scoring. The emphasis is on participation and on sport, leadership and fair play. Students take on a range of roles, both as players and officials.
Requirements The college sport uniform is to be worn in all Physical Education classes and Sport classes and at all interschool and House sporting events. The required uniform for Sport is the same as the uniform required for Physical Education. NB: Students may be required to pay for community based activities.

HUMANITIES UNIT: YEAR 8 HUMANITIES In this unit, students learn about key aspects of society and the environment. They develop a range of skills necessary for understanding and participating effectively in society. They study economics and society, medieval history and geography. During the Tasmania trip, students collect fieldwork data and then complete an assignment using their data. The study of history investigates change from medieval to modern society with a focus on analysing primary and secondary sources. The study of economics and society focuses on demand and supply.

LANGUAGES UNIT: YEAR 8 GERMAN In this course the language and content are drawn from teenage experience, including topics such as hobbies, sports, cultural festivals, birthdays, seasons, dates, days and times, food, school and body. Listening tasks are responded to in writing, verbally or non-verbally. Speaking may consist of statements or lengthier role-plays or presentations. Reading consists of identifying key ideas and factual information in written tests, and writing may convey personal or factual information in short sentences to longer pieces, such as diary entries, messages and letters.

UNIT: YEAR 8 JAPANESE This unit provides students with opportunities to understand and use Japanese within the world of teenage experience on topics related to events of general interest, topics drawn from other key learning areas, and from the media. Students talk about themselves, their friends and family, and express their opinions on topics such as travel, events and sport. Students also learn to discuss their daily routines. They participate in role-plays, reading performances and conversations and are exposed to a range of text types. Students compare and analyse the differences between the

cultures and languages of Japan and Australia. Extension work and self-directed projects are part of the course.

MATHEMATICS UNIT: YEAR 8 MATHEMATICS This unit aims to develop students’ mathematical skills so they are able to deal confidently and competently with daily life, employment, further study and other interests. They are required to interpret and communicate quantitative and logical ideas clearly and precisely. Students will use technology, including Hot Maths, to appropriately and effectively enhance their learning in Mathematics. Students will maintain a Maths Journal with relevant notes, examples, definitions and summaries. Throughout the unit, students will be undertaking technology applications and projects. The topics studied within the Year 8 Mathematics course are integers, fractions and decimals, lines, shapes and solids, algebra, statistics, equations, measurement, probability, straight line graphs and ratio and rates.

SCIENCE UNIT: YEAR 8 SCIENCE Science is a human activity that affects the way we understand and interact with the Earth. Students continue to develop their understanding of the ways that science influences industry, agricultural, marine and terrestrial resource management. Students identify problems, plan and conduct investigations, process information, and make conclusions and predictions based on first- and second-hand evidence. They communicate their understanding and report and evaluate their

findings, and the findings of others, in a range of ways. Students will study the major areas of science listed below, but the teacher may vary the order.

Cell structure and function. Organ systems in multicellular organisms. Chemical Science: Matter: Properties and types of substances. Chemical changes. Earth and Space Sciences: The lithosphere: rocks, minerals and time. Physical Science: Energy transfers and transformations.

UNIT: YEAR 8 DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Students will be introduced to a range of materials and investigate their characteristics. Minor production pieces of work will be created to develop an understanding of the materials and safe work practices. Using the technology design process students will create their own major production pieces that incorporate several skills and materials.

UNIT: YEAR 8 DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES Students will be introduced to a range of information technology skills and design technology software. They will use these skills to design, produce and evaluate Information Communication Technology (ICT) products. In the creation of the product students will also learn about cyber safety, appropriate protocols when accessing and using electronic information and research skills.

POSITIVE EDUCATION Each student in Year 8 participates in our structured approach to promoting and explicitly teaching the skills of student wellbeing. Grounded in the tenets of the science of Positive Psychology, this important subject takes place once per week and is taught by one of the students’ core teachers. In Positive Education, students will be encouraged to reflect on themselves and their own unique character strengths. They will explore the themes of building resilience, coping strategies, building positive relationships and learning to understand the explicit connections between physical health, mental health and academic success. We believe that when students feel positive and well, that they’ll also do well in their studies. Areas of Assessment

ENGLISH UNIT: YEAR 8 ENGLISH (SEAL) Students will continue to expand their knowledge and understanding of a range of complex texts. In speaking and listening activities students will discuss and present challenging ideas and issues using various text types. In shared and individual reading students will continue to interpret and analyse a range of classic and modern texts. They will offer considered and critical responses to various themes and issues contained within different text types. Students will further develop their essay and research skills and will continue to write in a range of styles for different audiences and purposes.

investigates change from medieval to modern society. History will also include the study of early Australian settlement and its impact on Indigenous Australians. The study of geography focuses on topography, tectonic plates and their impact on human societies. Patterns of human distribution, location and density will be considered. For the Tasmania trip students undertake a major research topic on an aspect of the geographical and historical life of Tasmania.

LANGUAGES UNIT: YEAR 8 GERMAN (SEAL) In this unit students learn to produce a variety of texts and to extend their comprehension and language production skills further. Students learn to interact in conversations, role-plays and interviews. Students continue to develop their understanding of how the German language works as a system. The course covers such topics as the culture of the German-speaking countries, places and travel, social interactions, clothing, hobbies, times and dates, family, home, birthdays, celebrations, city orientation and work.

MATHEMATICS UNIT: YEAR 8 MATHEMATICS (SEAL) This unit aims to develop students’ mathematical skills so they are able to deal confidently and competently with daily life, employment, further study and other interests. They are required to interpret and communicate quantitative and logical ideas clearly and precisely. Students will use technology, including Hot Maths, to appropriately and effectively enhance their learning in Mathematics. This unit extends and challenges students by focussing on mathematical concepts normally taught in the Year 9 course. The topics studied within the Year 8 (SEAL) Mathematics course are Pythagoras’ theorem, trigonometry, linear equations, linear graphs, statistics and probability, indices, algebra skills, measurement and quadratic relations.
