Cheshvan 5776

President’s Message Coming off a very successful Yomim Noraim season, my officers and I are very excited to extend the excitement for the rest of the year. We have some great plans that are sure to reinvigorate our shul. With the guidance of our esteemed Rabbis, Rabbi Kelemer and Rabbi Goller, the spiritual needs of our congregants are sure to be met. We have a great assortment of shiurim for people from all backgrounds to benefit from, as well as a vast array of minyanim both during the week and on Shabbos/ Yom Tov. Our Adult Ed Committee has many wonderful scholars in residence and special shiurim planned. The Youth Committee plans to keep our shul as the place to be for youth of our neighborhood with innovative programming, led by Yair Menchel and Michael Friedman. Sisterhood remains an integral part of our shul, with an assortment of programs and chesed activities. The newly formed Mens Club has already had a successful talis renovation event and has started a biking club. They have many more ideas up their sleeves. The physical plant of our shul also stands to continue to improve. The renovation of the Ira Goldschmiedt Youth Wing and Joel Phillips Bais Medrash have recently been completed and hosts the booming Young Families Minyan, as well as various shiurim and youth events. West Hempstead has become the place to be, and within it our shul remains a vibrant fixture. Our goal as an administration is to involve as many people as possible in the many activities that we offer. We hope that all of our many minyanim will join as one united group to strengthen our shul even further and to create an achdus that will be a model for all. Harold Lipsky MD FACG

Sisterhood Sisterhood has had another jam packed year of programs. All of our committees including Programming, Fundraising, Education, and Chesed have worked hard to continue the events and programs of previous years, as well as to add new ones. The year 2014-2015 started off with a Rosh Hashanah Bake Sale. Not only did it raise funds to support Sisterhood, but it created a feeling of community and achdus right before the Yamim Noraim. It continued again for Chanukah, with the same fantastic results. In addition to buying baked goods, women had an opportunity to sample coffee at our homemade coffee bar, and to purchase costume jewelry to enhance their Yom Tov! We thank both the bakers and the buyers for helping to support Sisterhood. Sisterhood also hosted a Pre-Rosh Hashana Shiur, given by Rabbi Doniel Gutlove, which was sponsored by the Reisbaum, Rose and Gutlove families. We thank them for helping us enhance our Yom Tov spirit. In October Sisterhood hosted a clothing drive to help benefit the organization Yad Leah. We collected countless bags of clothing that helped those in need in Israel. We thank both Toby Schnall and Chaya Pollack for spearheading and coordinating this wonderful effort. In November the ladies of our community got to spend a Motzei Shabbos together letting their inner “Rembrandt” shine through. All those who attended “Paint Night” came away with a beautiful self made painting to hang in their home. We thank Feigy Klein for organizing the event. Game Night soon followed. Once again our Kiddush Room was filled with people of all ages from our shul enjoying a fun filled evening together. Thank you to Becky Ciment, Anat Schick, Adina Frankel, Nancy Greenberg and Deborah Plotsker for handling all the details. We hosted a number of well attended

“schmoozes” with both Rabbi Kelemer and Rabbi Goller and we look forward to having more. We thank the Kelemer and Goller families for opening up their homes to us. As always our most successful fundraiser of the year was our annual Mishloach Manot Campaign. This year’s theme of “Throwback Thursday” featured items that were once non-kosher, but became kosher over the years. We would like to thank our extremely hard working Programming and Fundraising committees for making it all happen. The Starter, Side, Salad and Sweets Sampler is in its 8th year!! Once again we raised well over $5,000 for the Rabbi’s Fund. A big thank you to Meryl and Jeremy Strauss for opening up their beautiful home for this wonderful event. The Rabbi Meir and Rebbetzin Tovah Felman Shabbos Mevarchim Series and the Dr. Abraham Stern Pirkei Avot Series were enjoyed by all who attended. We thank the women who coordinated these shiurim: Shevi Cohen and Rivkie Lamm. Thanks to all those who gave shiurim for Shabbos Mevarchim: Rabbi Mark Dratch, Mrs. Penny Kraut, Dr. Stuart Apfel, Rabbi Josh Goller and Rabbi Richard Bieler. Thank you to all those who gave shiurim for our Pirkei Avot Series, creatively presented as “Through the Eyes Of” a therapist, Rivkie Lamm; an entrepreneur, Jeremy Strauss; an educator, Pesha Keletnick; a scientist Alyssa Schuck; and an attorney, Yigal Gross. Ladies’ “Summer Camp” activities are always a blast! We enjoyed watching Busy in Brooklyn’s Chanie Apfelbaum in action in Ayelet Mottahedeh’s beautiful kitchen and delighted in tasting her delicious dishes. Ladies night camp continued with our annual sold out event, Broadway Night. All those who participated enjoyed watching “An American in Paris”. (continued on page 9)

Youth News The 2014-2015 year was major for YIWH Youth! After the exciting kickoff carnival, featuring inflatables, games, face-painting, prizes, spin-art, sand-art, and more, the year was off to a great start! This year, the Youth Department opened up its first ever game room! Featuring foosball, arcade-hockey, knock-hockey, arcadebasketball, and many board games, the fun never stopped! The Youth Department enjoyed many fun in-groups events including its first ever Carnival In-Groups! To maintain the educational component of groups, the children received carnival tickets by answering questions on the parsha, upon which they were able to play a wide variety of exciting carnival games for a chance to win tons of YIWH Youth tickets! We also had In-Groups Olympics, complete with relay races, Tanach face off, and a huge game of tug of war! Another new program incorporated into groups was Torah Bowl! At the end of a Sefer, the children would compete at all grade levels in an exciting round of Torah Bowl trivia, including questions from every parsha! In addition, if a group would learn a new part of tefillah in groups before learning it in school, the group would have a special doughnuts and ice cream kiddush! Mazel Tov to Kindergarden for learning Aleinu, Second grade for learning Baruch Sheamar, Third grade for learning Yishtabach and Pre-Teen girls for learning Nishmat thoughout the year! We also had an extremely fun and ruach-filled Shabbaton, which brought in over 100 kids! In addition, Motzei Shabbosim were always busy for the YIWH Youth Department. Whether it was Gym Nights, which featured 6 different sports options, Movie Nights, or our first ever Frumba courses, where 1st-6th grade girls were able to enjoy a professional dancing-workout course, there was always some-

thing exciting for each kid. Chagim were so exciting for the Young Israel youth! Sukkos was jam-packed with excitement as the Nursery decorated Simchat Torah flags with our very own Morah Allison, and the Youth Department experienced its first ever Hallel-Themed “Color War Sukkah Hop”, which was both educational and fun. In addition, the Pre-Teens and Teens had a special Chol Hamoed minyan, followed by “Doughnuts N' Learning” with our Youth Director, Yair Menchel, in the shul Sukkah. Chanukah was jam-packed as well, as the Youth Department had four exciting events! Chanukah programming kicked off with the community-wide Menorah building, attracting over 100 kids, each of whom had the opportunity to build, and design their very own menorah! The “Dreidel Spinoff Madness” was a huge hit as well, as each child played the classic game of dreidel in a March-Madness style tournament while enjoying a deluxe pasta bar and sufganiyot. The eventual winner, Baruch Kutner, won an iTunes gift card! As an apropos time for gifts, Chanukah featured the Youth Department's first prize redemption of the year, with special lowered prices and free giveaways in honor of Chanukah! In addition, our Nursery enjoyed a fun and creative program, making their own edible and artistic dreidels with Morah Allison. The Youth Department had a special Tu Bishvat program, where each child created their own edible storybook of the four seasons, made edible trees to represent the different seasons, and then enjoyed their delicious and nutritious books. Purim was very exciting as we had a family Megilah reading led by Ari Feldman, with his many entertaining character voices. During Megilah reading, the Nursery had a special clown with balloons show along with 4

Youth News Morah Allison, so parents could listen to the Megilah. Following Megilah reading, we joined together for an incredible break-fast sponsored by the Sisterhood, and a hilarious performance from the Chicago City Limits improv comedy club. The fun did not stop at Pesach. The week before Pesach, the Youth Department brought in the famous “Wandering Que!” BBQ, giving families the opportunity to enjoy eating delicious BBQ outside their cleaned kitchens, along with two movie drop-off options for kids. During Chol Hamoed we went to Bounce and had a blast! In honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut, we had an erev Shabbas parent drop-off and a true Israeli experience, with a basic army training and avatiach (watermelon) for snack! The army training included field training exercises, obstacle courses, team building exercises, and more! Each participant received an official YIWH Youth Yom Ha'atzmaut basic training tshirt and a YIWH Youth baseball hat. Shavuos was full of excitement, as we had four events over three days! On the first day of groups, we had a special Edible Har Sinai Making program. In addition, we broke out our new Dodge It Youth Tag, which all of the children really enjoyed. Later that day, we had our iLearn program, where the children learned the prepared sources with their parents and had a recap shiur by one of our four amazing speakers. In between the sessions, the children received special YIWH Youth "candy-Torah" treats. Following the other set of the sessions, the MAJOR candy bar was opened up, where all of the kids and parents :) marveled at the amount of candy open for taking, to represent the sweetness of Torah that we celebrate on Shavuos. On Shavuos night, the Pre-Teens heard four amazing shiurim followed by an all-out ice cream bar,

featuring every topping you can think of! On Sunday, the Nursery and Kindergarten-aged children had a special Bikkurim scavenger hunt with Morah Allison, which capped off with a brachos party of all of the different shivat haminim. On Monday, groups featured a fantastic ice-cream Sundae-bar, and each group competed to search the building for the hidden shivat haminim. Tons of fun was had and we hope your children will join us for the upcoming exciting activities we have planned!! After tripling the number of kids attending groups, the Youth Department has many more fun and exciting programs planned for this coming year! The YIWH Youth Department will be undergoing some major changes. Groups are going to be even more fun, with more active games and team building activities. In addition, the kids are going to have the opportunity to create stronger relationships with their leaders, as the leaders of each group will now be permanent leaders for every Shabbas, in order to promote continuity. The Youth Department will also be getting new Koren Youth Educational Siddurim, to encourage a more educationally enriched and enhanced tefillah experience in groups. The leaders will be trained in the davening program, and it will be complemented with davening sessions during groups. The special programs outside of groups will continue as well. The Youth Department will have more programs, including Art Events, Parent Drop-Offs, Movie Nights, Gym Nights, and new exciting motzei Shabbas programs! We will also be having more Shabbatons, due to popular demand. To start off the new year, our opening event was like no other! The renowned Ned Gelfars gave us an amazing performance, (continued on page 8)

In Memory of Dr. Leon Hankoff RACHEL JACOBSON

My dad was a psychiatrist. He served in the Navy for 2 years, traveling to Okanawa and sending back beautiful gifts and furniture to my mother. He worked at Kings County Hospital, Misericordia in the Bronx, Queens Hospital (where he did consulting work for Hillside Hospital, Heath and Human resources for the City of NY), spent 3 years at Stonybrook University setting up the psychiatry department, and for the last 18 years of his career, Elizabeth General Hospital, running the psychiatric department. He wrote books and articles and he lectured. When in social situations, he didn't need to let everyone know he was a doctor. He usually sat quietly and listened, never needing to prove himself to anyone. I, on the other hand, was proud of my shrink father, always thinking psychiatrists were the top of the MD chain. After 8 years of working in mental health and with wonderful psychiatrists, I realize it is a different story, with the patients asking when they will see a real doctor. My dad was always reading, doing research, and learning; and not just in psychiatry. I could ask him about any of my medical complaints and felt confident that he could help me; if not, he would look it up. He loved history, religion, and studying math for fun. He rarely watched TV and saw a total of 4 movies in his lifetime. To say he was a geek was an understatement. He loved to garden, no way would he ever pay a gardener. Every weekend, you would find him in his cut off pants, t-shirt and hat in the backyard, first in Brooklyn and later in the big yard that he loved in West Hempstead. His bamboo garden was famous in all the land, and he offered and often cut it for people to use for their Sukkah. My dad loved to write and do art work. He wrote poems for special occasions, when each of my daughters were born, and for my birthdays. When not at work, he spent hours in his workroom, making art pieces out of junk, painting pictures, and decoupaging boxes.

My dad should have lived to 120. He played handball well past his 60's, hiked, never drank, and hadn't smoked his occasional cigar or pipe in many years. He kept up his learning and education with reading and lectures, and listened to classical music. He gave tzedakah, and was involved with Soviet Jewry for years, even making a trip to bring illegal items like Brit Milah kits and judaica to the Jews in Russia. My parents loved Israel. Trips to the Bahamas and Disney Land we didn't have, but trips to Israel.........We often rented an apartment, made friends in the local community, went to shul, and shopped at the corner store, and occasionally did some touristy stuff. I remember racing up Masada with him, and I am pretty sure I won. They bought a time share, and later spent many months with their grandchildren who were born there. One summer I was forced to go to camp and join B’nai Akiva. Although I hated it at the time, I realize my parents had a bigger plan. Israel is my 2nd home. My sister Eve made her life there because of what our parents taught and were able to give us. My dad made it possible for me to take my children several times. One special time was just with my mom, when my girls were toddlers, a real mother/daughter trip. The last trip together with the entire family was Pesach, about 6 years ago. He knew it would be his last trip. After going on a trip to Puerto Rico with a friend, I came back telling my dad how beautiful it was, but that I didn't get to hike enough in the rainforest or see enough of what the land had to offer. He said one sentence: “So let’s go”. And there it was: The first and only father/daughter trip that I will always treasure. And if you knew my dad, there was no 5, 4 or even 3 star hotels, no tour guides, big blue pools or lavish meals. We stayed at a friend’s B and B, with no air-conditioning, and showered with the insects. But we ate the mangos off the tree outside our motel window, took 4 hour hikes where we never saw another 6

In Memory of Dr. Leon Hankoff human being, and spent time with the B & B owner. who shared his knowledge of the land. My father taught me to enjoy a simple lettuce and tomato sandwich and to get the most out of traveling and learning about a place. My dad took us all, children and grandchildren, to Golden Acres several times. It was right up his alley, simple living, with many bugs and animals, uncomfortable cots and family-style meals. It was perfect for us all and I will cherish those memories. My father was my mentor, the most honorable, honest, charitable, moral, intelligent, selfless and humble man I have ever known. My dad taught me to treat everyone with dignity, whether or not they were aware of it, which made it so much more difficult the past few years when he needed to be cared for physically. My father was frugal; he drove around in a Hyundai or Corolla for many years, often with out air-conditioning or a radio. Yes, back then you could order a car without a radio or airconditioning. Although we were always comfortable, he never bought new clothes, rarely ate out, and was always careful with his spending. Because of his prudence, he was able to save and help us when we needed. We were all touched by his generosity. He believed in education of any kind and was able to help all of his children and grandchildren through school, from Yeshiva to graduate school. Rebecca went to college for drama, my nephew is now a vet. He valued it all. So much so, that even after 5 years of undergrad, he was happy to allow me to attend a school for fashion and merchandising. He said that no education is a waste and he sent me off to live in a roach infested shoebox sized room at the YMCA in NYC. No, he did not coddle his daughters. “ Never explain, never complain”. I still try to emulate my dad and live by these words. My father was much more confident than me, never cared about keeping up with the Joneses, nor what others thought about how

he dressed, (often like a homeless person on weekends, my mother yelling at him to change before they went to the theater or concert) or how his yard looked, which he cared for himself while wearing his homeless man garb. When I was hiking with him once, he fell, got up and never said a word. Later I found out he was quite uncomfortable but never complained. “If you say you are bored, you are boring”. He was never bored, always busy with something, interested in learning and doing. “It is a privilege to care for one’s parents.” Yes, Daddy, now I understand. I have many memories of my dad telling me to do for my mother in some way, take her somewhere, be with her, and never be disrespectful to her. He always listened to her and followed her orders. He taught me the importance of caring for family members. My mother has been a fierce caretaker and advocate for my father all these years, never wavering in the importance of his comfort and dignity. She read to him daily, watched TV and ate with him, would not allow us to talk about him if he was in hearing distance. She started saying kiddush when he no longer could, did not like to leave him for any length of time, and if she did spent several minutes explaining to him that she was leaving and would be back soon. As a nurse she was comfortable with any medical complications, never becoming overwhelmed and taking care of what ever needed to be done. As a mother she was the same, the most maternal, caring and loving of mothers. I cannot speak about my father without remembering Rebecca. The loss of a child is unimaginable. And as was his way, his suffering was always silent. Thank you , Daddy, for teaching us all to respect all life, no matter how small. I carry bugs from my office to the grass outside, my mother allows spiders to make their home on her windowsills, and my girls would never kill (continued on page 9)

Adult Education that these speakers challenged and inspired our shul. This coming year is shaping up as another exciting one for Adult Education. Rabbi Paysach Krohn will be joining us as a scholar in residence. We will also be hosting Rabbi Moish Taragin from Gush, as well as Rabbi Yedidya Altlas -an IDF rabbi- later in the year. Succos already featured home grown talent Rabbi David Cohen. Other speakers and programs are also being planned, so make sure to stay tuned. Please avail yourselves of the many different opportunities to join the tzibur in strengthening our commitment to Talmud Torah Berabim. Without a doubt, our shul's extensive Adult Education program is one of the hallmarks of our shul.

The Mishna in Pirkei Avos (5:17) describes the different types of people who study Torah. The Mishnah’s highest accolade belongs to the person who both goes to the study hall and acts on what he learns. That person is described as a chasid. Rav Lau explains that this is because of the extra inspiration that comes from learning in a large group. Learning alone is great, but you are limited by your own knowledge. Learning with others allows you to gain from everyone and be exposed to ideas and concepts that otherwise would have been hidden from you. Here at YIWH, we are blessed with many opportunities to join together to learn Torah. We are fortunate to have shiurim given on a daily basis by our extremely knowledgeable and dynamic rabbis, and other shiurim led by the talented men and women of our community. There is a shiur for every level and interest. The shul website is currently being updated with a description of each and every shiur. The success of these shiurim is a direct function of the participation of our members. In addition to the regular Shabbas and weekday classes there are many speakers who enhance our learning experience through out the year as guest lecturers and scholars in residence. This past year was especially busy. The year started off with a visit from a true gadol, Rav Yosef Efrati, and his talmidim, who taught us about the laws of shmitta. Thanks to Michael Levine for bringing this great symposium together. Mr. Steven Frankel of Machon Hamikdash wowed us with his incredible knowledge of the Beis Hamikdash. The kids also had a great time building a large replica of the Beis Hamikdash. Ophie Nat got our Yomim Noraim off to a great start with a magnificent selichos davening. We were privileged as well to have had Rabbis Boruch Simon, Mordechai Torczyner, and Moshe Meir Weiss give special lectures around the Yomim Tovim. To round out the year we had Dr. Marc Shapiro and Rabbi Yechiel Lichtenstein as scholars in residence. The feedback was very positive, and we hope

and Bubble Soccer, GameTruck, face painting, and the opportunity for children to design their very own YIWH Youth Shirts were awesome, making sure the fun never stopped! Exciting Sukkos programs included a scavenger hunt Sukkah Hop, art event, breakfast and learning, a trip to Active Kidz, and an opportunity to meet some special guest tzadikim! In addition, for every child who attends groups, parents are asked to please fill out the groups registration, as the registration will be used for the planning of certain special surprise events. Sisterhood (continued from page 3)

In Memory

Our summer was filled with Torah through our new Parsha Series "Ice Cream and Insights" given by Rabbi Goller at 16 Handles. The women of our community had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with friends and learn Torah this summer on Tuesday mornings . We thank Ayelet and David Mottahedeh for graciously welcoming our series in their store.

or harm any living creature. Our families love for animals, I know stems from my parents respect for the world around them. I was told that many years ago, my father saved a baby squirrel from some boys playing catch with it. Catching frogs with my dad in his backyard is a special memory for me, dare I say 30 years ago, and more recently, for my girls. My daughter Eliana reminded me of the summer he set up a cage and they named each frog. Eve and I forced their release shortly after. Thank you for passing down your organizational skills to me, teaching me the importance of jotting things down for later use. It has come in handy at work and personal life. I have also been blessed with your genes for being a morning person. I now understand the feeling of waking up, happy to be alive, and starting my day. Thank you for your energy and knowing the importance of exercise and staying healthy; and for your creativity and love of creating art. Your pictures made of found junk adorn our walls, and your mask collection will always be followed with thoughts of you. Not a day will go by that will not be touched by you. Your grandchildren were privileged to have a brilliant, honorable, sometimes funny, sometimes eccentric saba. I and my sisters were lucky to have a father who taught us honesty, integrity and morality. I will continue to miss you so much.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Rabbi Kelemer and Rabbi Goller for all their help and guidance, and Lester Bleich for being a great partner. We look forward to working closely with the new administration, namely Harold Lipsky and his new cabinet. We also want to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing beloved, creative, tireless and talented President, Bonnie Kupchik. Bonnie’s accomplishments over the past four plus years was celebrated at the culminating Sisterhood event, the Installation Dinner. In addition, each sisterhood committee member was thanked and presented with a beautiful Siddur. There was a special presentation for Stacy Edelstein for all of her hard work and dedication as one of the leaders of our Chesed Committee, as we wished her and her family tzatchem l’shalom and hatzlacha on their move to Cincinnati. The new Presidium is excited about the many new faces and participants in Sisterhood’s various committees, as it reflects the younger families moving in and the unique opportunity of working jointly with the more seasoned members of our shul. This is truly a reflection of the diversity and beauty of our shul. As you can see, the Sisterhood is very busy and we look forward to planning the year ahead with our extraordinary team!

It's always so up lifting to experience the chesed your friends do for you in times of need; from visits, and calls, to meals. Thus, we wish to express our deep appreciation to all who helped us during the time of Aryeh's fall. In addition, I would like to thank all my friends who donated to JEP in my honor. May you merit from your mitzvah.

We cannot thank Rabbi Kelemer and Richie Miller enough for the assistance provided prior to Al’s Z”L death and subsequently during the week of shiva. We also want to thank the community for participating devotedly in the daily minyan, for the meals provided by Sisterhood and by members of the community and the contributions made in Al’s memory to charitable institutions and last but not least, the shiva visits which brought comfort to us during a trying and difficult period of our lives. From the time that Al and I and Karyn moved to West Hempstead in 1964, we never doubted that this community was special. May his memory be for a blessing. With much thanks to all.
