Yizkor Elokim nishmas. . . . . . . . . . . . The most ancient sources reveal the Yizkor as the prelude to the Musaf of Yom Kippur (and in later generations extends to the Yomim Tovim.) The text simply records the expression of charity as a form of atonement. However, the connection to Musaf gives us an additional glimpse into this poignant moment. The Kohen Gadol achieved a degree of spirituality unparalleled in the realm of human interaction with the Divine. His soul soared into the heights of ecstasy. At such moments, when one is severed from the material world, the danger of a trace of self-satisfaction, of a hairbreadth of unnecessary pride threatens the Kohen’s entire edifice of devotion. A small flaw and yet all of the enormous effort can be for naught. The recognition that ones spiritual stature is grounded in his ancestry, that if not for the Kohen’s lineage he would be outside G-d’s chamber is a sobering thought; one which instills humility and prepares him for an authentic encounter with his Creator. As we usher in the Musaf where every Jew in the kahal readies himself to climb upon the Kohen Gadol’s ladder – aspiring to reach a purer realm of existence, the Yizkor is recited so that WE should remember from whom we descend and whose teachings gave us the ability to yearn for a world cleansed of sin. Truly – Yizkor Elokim – if we remember this lesson that G-d will preserve every cherished memory of our parents and ancestors in His “sefer hazichronos.” Your participation in our Yizkor book reflects an understanding of the significance of our roots. It furthers the cohesiveness of our kehilla whose success depends exclusively on our capacity – and willingness – to remember. In this merit may you be inscribed in the Sefer Hachayim. Rabbi Yehuda Kelemer 1

YIZKOR HASHEM: What is man that you recognize him? The son of a frail human that reckon with him. Man is like a breath. His days are like a passing shadow. In the morning it blossoms and is rejuvenated, by evening it is cut down and brittle. According to the count of our days, so may You teach us: then we shall acquire a heart of wisdom. Safeguard the perfect and watch the upright, for the destiny of that man is peace. But God will redeem my soul from the grip of the Lower World, for he will take me. Selah! My flesh and my heart yearn—rock of my heart and my portion is God forever. Thus the dust returns to the ground as it was and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Whoever sits in the refuge of the Most High, he shall dwell in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of HASHEM, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, I will trust Him.” That He will delivery you from the ensnaring trap and from devastating pestilence. With His pinion He will cover you, and beneath His wings you will be protected; shield and armor is His truth. You shall not be afraid of the terror of night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; nor the pestilence that walks in gloom, nor the destroyer who lays waste at noon. Let a thousand encamp at your side and a myriad at your right hand, but to you they shall not approach. You will merely peer with your eyes and you will see the retribution of the wicked. Because [you said], “You, HASHEM, are my refuge’; you have made the Most High your dwelling place. No evil will befall you; nor will any plague come near your tent. He will charge His angels for your , to protect you in all your ways. On your palms they will carry you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. Upon the lion and viper you will tread; you will trample the young lion and the serpent. For he has yearned for Me and I will delivery him; I will elevate him because he knows My Name. He will call upon Me and I will answer him, I am with him in distress, I will release him and I will honor him, I will satisfy him with long life and show him my salvation.

Remembrance for those who perished in the Holocaust Our Father, our King-the God of all humankind: Grant proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence in the lofty levels of the holy and the pure ones, who shine like the glow of the firmament-we remember the souls of the six million Jewsmen, women, and children who were murdered, slaughtered, strangled, and buried alive at the hands of the monstrous oppressors in the European Holocaust. They were all holy and pure. Among them were very learned ones and very pious ones-Torah giants like the Cedars of Lebanon. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden-therefore may the Master of Mercy bind their souls in the Bond of Life. Hashem is their heritage. Remember their sacrifice and may it be a merit for us and all Israel. The earth shall not cover their blood and shall not be a place to cover their cries. In their merit, may the deprived ones of Israel return to their inheritance and may the holy ones-their righteousness shall remain an everlasting memory before You. May they arrive in the next world in peace and repose on their resting place. Now let us respond: Amen.

Remembrance for the Israeli Soldiers Our Father, our King-the God of all humankind-please remember the pure and innocent souls of our sons and daughters who risked their lives to die the death of the mighty when they volunteered to help our nation and our land. They were swift as an eagle and mightier than the lion in their battle to liberate our homeland and our nation. When they ascended the altar to enable the revival of Israel in its holy land, they inflated a strong spirit and strength in all of the people of Israel in the land of Israel and in the Diaspora. They awakened the liberation and redemption of our soul. May our God remember them for good among the many holy ones and heroes of Israel from time immemorial. May their souls be bound with the Bond of Life. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden. May they repose in peace on their resting place and arise to receive their reward at the end of days. Amen

Prayer for Cemetery Psalm 16
טז
A Michtam of David Guard me, O God, for in You I have taken refuge, O my soul—You have said unto the Lord, You are my God, my good fortune is not deserving of You. But attributable to the holy ones who are buried in the earth, To the mighty ones, in whose merit—all my desires are due. Those who hasten to follow another god, may their sorrows be multiplied; I shall not pour out their libations of blood nor carry their names upon my lips. The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my share, You maintain what befalls me. The ropes of my portions have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yea, my estate is beautiful to me. I will bless the Lord Who has given me counsel, Indeed, even in the nights my intellect instructs me. I have set the Lord before me always; because He is at my right hand I shall not falter. Therefore, my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body also rests in safety. For You will not abandon my soul to the nether-world, Nor will you allow Your pious one to see destruction. Make known to me the path of life, the fullness of joys in Your presence; at your right hand there are pleasures for eternity. 16
Prayer for Cemetery Psalm 23
כג
A psalm of David The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He lays me down in green pastures, He leads me beside tranquil waters. He restores my soul: He leads me on paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake. Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, you anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows. May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

REMEMBRANCE OF NAMES Because our beloved departed have enshrined themselves deeply in our hearts—because their lives were a benediction to us—because through the nobility of their living, and the royalty of their character they inspired us to live worthily and nobly—the dead, whose souls we commemorate today, shall not glide swiftly into the depths of oblivion. We shall hold them long in cherished and consecrated memory. We inscribe their names in this Memorial Booklet as a token of our everlasting love and affection.
LAWS OF YIZKOR 1. Yizkor is an ancient prayer for departed parent(s), which was initially recited on Yom Kippur and eventually was instituted as a part of the liturgy of the concluding day of the Yomim-Tovim. The earliest medrashik sources highlight that it is the commitment on Yom-Tov to give charity in memory of a parent, which brings comfort to the neshama and great merit to the child. 2. Yizkor is recited for a deceased parent even during the 1st year of mourning. 3. Although Yizkor does not require a minyan, nevertheless the custom is to try to join a congregation at the time of its recitation. Otherwise one may recite it at home before Musaf. 4. Yizkor may be recited for other departed relatives and friends. However, only one who has at least one deceased parent may do so. Customarily one whose parents are alive leaves the sanctuary during Yizkor. 5. Selections from the Tehillim (Psalms) are usually recited before the essential text of Yizkor and is followed by the Kel Moleh Rachamim (memories prayer). 20
