Khan Academy is a reliable and highly useful source of academic learning.  Khan Academy helps to improve cognitive development, critical thinking skills and can be used in the classroom to aid in engagement. Who started Khan Academy?

Khan Academy was founded by Salman Khan. Sal was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. His mother was born in Calcutta, India; and his father was born in Barisal, Bangladesh. Sal is a former hedge fund analyst with degrees from MIT and Harvard.

5

How was Khan Academy started?

In August 2004, Sal Khan began remotely tutoring his cousin, Nadia, who was struggling with unit conversion. This "Swiss-cheese" gap in her knowledge was not allowing her to be placed in the more advanced math track. Since Nadia was in New Orleans, and Sal was in Boston working at a hedge fund at the time, Sal started tutoring her through the phone and Yahoo Doodle after work. As Nadia improved in math class, word got around and Sal started tutoring a handful of his cousins and family members. Scheduling became a real issue, and he decided to begin recording videos and posting them on YouTube in 2006 so everyone could watch at their own pace. More and more people started watching, and Sal has been making videos ever since. The organization was incorporated as a 501c(3) nonprofit in 2008. Sal continued to work on Khan Academy during his spare time until the fall of 2009, when he quit his hedge fund job and decided to pursue the endeavor full-time. He lived off of his savings for the first nine months, until he received his first significant donation from Ann Doerr. In September 2010, Khan Academy received large grants from Google ($2 million) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ($1.5 million) and began to build out an organization. Sal called on Shantanu Sinha from McKinsey & Company to join as President & COO. They were former high school math competitors in New Orleans, freshman year roommates at MIT, and long-time friends. They immediately hired Ben Kamens and Jason Rosoff from Fog Creek Software to lead software development and design. In October 2010, the small team moved into their first office space.

NATURE OF KHAN ACADEMY How does Khan Academy Work?  Khan Academy uses videos, readings, and interactive tools to teach students. On opening the app you will see the menu on the left side with all the videos organized under 7 categories: Math, Science & Economics, Humanities, Test Prep, Partner Content, Talks and Interviews, and Coach Resources  . At the time of this Khan Academy App review the app provides access to over 4,300 videos currently available on the Khan Academy website. On choosing one of the above categories you will open a more detailed menu that includes, for example under Science & Economics, biology, chemistry, computer science and more others.  You will find many subcategories and at all times you are shown how many videos are included under each of them.  The videos are organised like mini lessons, most of them under 10 minutes. All of them are lectured and feature very useful and witty slideshow drawings.  You also have underneath the video player an interactive transcript that, even though it doesn’t scroll down automatically while the video plays, makes it very easy to follow or to jump around specific topics in the videos.  Students will find this very useful if they think the lecture is going to fast or if they will want to review just certain parts.  Upon finishing our Khan Academy review, we believe this is one of the best educational apps on the market. Khan Academy is a simple learning app that is very easy to use.

How much does Khan Academy cost? Khan Academy, quite simply, is free. It's a nonprofit organization with a mission to "provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere." So don't expect it to start charging. You don't even need to make an account or provide any of your personal information to start using the resources. However, creating an account does make it easier to track progress and to share learning history with a teacher, guardian, or fellow pupil. 7

EDUCATIONAL IMPLIFICATION Learning outcomes exceed typical growth.

LBUSD Students perform better than expected on district established targets. In partnership with Long Beach Unified School District in Southern California, 5,348 middle school mathematics students used Khan Academy integrated into instruction for 1 class period per week. Students who used Khan gained an additional 22 points (.20 ES) on the Smarter Balanced Mathematics Assessment scale score. The district indicates this is roughly 2x the district target versus those who did not use Khan Academy.

FSG Students who complete 60% or more of their grade-level math on Khan Academy experienced 1.8 times their expected growth on the mathematics portion of the NWEA MAP Growth Assessment, a widely used test.FSG conducted a study of a statewide pilot of Khan Academy in Idaho with 173 teachers and 10,500 students during the 2013-14 school year .

In the study we identify 17

three best practices -- leveling up skills, completing a full-length practice exam, and following personalized practice recommendations.
