FIRST IMPRESSIONS of Dr. Phillips

Your New Community Welcomes You

Dr. Phillips Area, Then... In the heart of Central Florida, you will find a small village within the city limits of Orlando called Dr. Phillips. The name is derived from citrus baron Dr. Philip Phillips. Dr. Phillips was born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 27, 1874.

Although he received a medical degree from Columbia University, he arrived in Florida in 1894 with ambitions to start a cattle business and purchased his first citrus grove. Unfortunately, a heavy freeze wiped out his crops and he briefly returned home to Tennessee. Upon his return to Florida, Dr. Phillips purchased several acres of land in Osceola County for citrus, as well as cattle. With this land, he started a citrus empire and even invented a new form of pasteurization called “flash” pasteurization. This helped sterilize the juice without giving it a metallic aftertaste that other forms of pasteurization might. Dr. Phillips used his marketing strengths to coin the tagline “Drink Dr. Phillips orange juice because the Doc says it’s good for you”. The American Medical Association took notice, and after their own testing, gave Dr. Phillips orange juice their seal of approval. As his empire grew, Phillips purchased more land near Sand Lake and started building facilities so that his workers could live there fulltime.

This started with houses for his seasonal workers then an airstrip for his year round staff. Ever the innovator, the airstrip would be used to send up planes to spray pesticides on the citrus from the air as it was quicker than doing so on land. With his many innovations in the citrus business and his overall success selling over 100 million oranges in one year, Dr. Phillips was later inducted into the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame.

Dr. Phillips is known for having a generous and compassionate spirit. After retiring from the citrus business, Dr. Phillips turned his focus to philanthropy full time. The Dr. P. Phillips foundation was founded in 1953 to help families and individuals in need and continues to do so today. Dr. Phillips legacy is felt throughout Central Florida and beyond, yet the small community still remains and continues to reflect the innovative and compassionate spirit of its founder.
