Land Acknowledgement We would like to acknowledge with respect the indigenous people on whose ancestral lands The New School now stands. We are gathered on the unceded land of the Lenape peoples. We ask you to join us in acknowledging the Lenape community, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. The New School alsoacknowledges that it was founded upon exclusions and erasures of many indigenous peoples, including those on whose land this institution is located. This acknowledgment demonstrates a commitment to beginning the process of working to dismantle the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism.

Assisted listening devices are available at The Bank Street Theater by request to the House Manager.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When I was a girl, I often thought, if only I could find a place to live freely, happily, and safely when I became a woman. By freely, I meant not being asked to be nice all the time or expected to find a husband and reproduce. By happily, I meant being able to be with someone I like despite our genders. I read stories in different cultures until I realized that place simply did not exist. As I was reading, I also learned more about the White Terror Era of my home island, when people who claimed themselves as Taiwanese as I do, were arrested, tortured, if not killed by the Chinese Nationalist (KMT) party. It was also when my mom got punished for speaking Taiwanese as a school kid- two decades later, she raised her children in Mandarin and sent us to learn American English. I connected the dots between what happened in Taiwan and the stories of my family to try to make sense of what I amthere must be a reason why I was born this way. I need to know more about myself before I face the world. And thus, I'm telling this story about a woman who doesn't know who she is. What makes a person themself- could it be the social expectations they internalize in their thinking; the culture they somehow inherit through the language brought by colonizers; the stories told by the ones who love them; or the accumulation of their actions? As a wise friend once told me: Just tell your story in your own words, create your narrative, and they will become your history, the foundation of your decisions that take you into the future. -I-Chen Wang, Director
