Our Resident Poet Mike Di Placido is a poet based in North Yorkshire. An ex-professional footballer and England Youth Internation- al, Mike ‘peddled his soccer wares’ across the globe, from York City to Australia and New Zealand, before turning to a life of literature – taking an MA in Poetry while working as a house-husband. A YORKSHIRE PARABLE I went to see the wisest man in the world — he lived above a shop in Cleckheaton. A nice man, he offered me tea and biscuits before we got down to business. Is there an omniscient being? I asked him, one who shares an intimate relationship with each and every one of us? I wouldn’t really know, he said. Well, do you believe in an afterlife? A heaven, perhaps: or maybe reincarnation? It would be nice, he mused — pushing over the chocolate eclairs Realising I was getting nowhere with this, I wandered over to the window and watched as cold November light set fire to the trees across the road. Nice day, I ventured. Now you’re getting somewhere he replied. By Mike Di Placido

To my mind they’re more elegant and fit better into contemporary homes. The two varieties I grow are Paper White, which is my favourite, because it’s white and so seems to fit in with the whole Christmas theme, and Grand Soleil d’Or for when I need a sunnier, yellow bloom. Both varieties have tiny flowers, clustered at the top of straight, long stems and, if planted now they will be in flower before Christmas. I tend to plant a few pots now (they’re great as economical gifts for those hard-to-buy- for elderly relatives) plus a pot per week for myself between now and the end of October so I can have the luxury of scented bulbs continuously in flower for a couple of months during the bleak winter period. You need to buy ‘prepared’ bulbs which have been heat-treated to make them flower before Christmas. I tend to plant one variety per pot because I think that provides more impact but you can plant to suit your own tastes.
