2021 TRUST HOPE WELLNESS IMPACT 2021 ANNUAL REPORT 1
WE ARE A COMMUNITY THAT CARES FOR ALL. OUR VISION is to be a community network that builds trust, hope, and wellness for all.
It is our mission to provide access to programs and resources that support wellness, healthier food and other essential needs in our community while embracing individual dignity and a commitment to sustainability and quality.
By understanding our past, and looking proactively toward the future, EVCF will have a positive impact on the people who live here for generations to come – donors able to share, volunteers able to contribute, staff able to do the important work, and clients able to thrive. — Mike Rushmore, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Eagle Valley Community Foundation

A note from the Executive Director and Chairman Dear Foundation Friends,
F
irst and foremost, we offer our heartfelt appreciation to YOU, our generous donors, volunteers, friends, partners and supporters, for making 2021 a year of rapid response, recovery and rekindling of the human spirit. Thanks to your support, Eagle Valley Community Foundation continues to put our vision into action to build community through people, partnerships and purpose. Your generosity was the driving force behind progress in 2021; it meant we were responsible for feeding the health and wellness of all families during critical times as the pandemic persisted, and the workforce began to recover. Your generosity meant we could focus on serving the most vulnerable of the local population, enhancing the lives of those who might otherwise struggle to live. We provided access to healthy food and connections to local services and resources through programming with 124,000 total community visits in 2021. This year, volunteer hours contributed nearly doubled over last year. The Community Market provided barrier-free access and healthy food choices for approximately 27% of Eagle Valley population in 2021, while our expanded grocery food rescue program prevented more than 576,000 pounds of food from going to waste at the landfill. That is almost 5 times the amount of food we rescued in 2018! The Mobile Intercultural Resource Alliance (MIRA) continued connecting community members to health resources and services, and provided almost 7,000 Covid-19 vaccines and more than 400 flu vaccines to prevent disease and boost the health of our community. Where will our vision take us next? We will continue to convene with local organizations and community members to study and assess our most pressing community needs. We seek to identify local issues and gaps in service, and then solve these problems by designing and building custom programs that we manage. As Eagle Valley Community Foundation evolves, we remain connected to the pulse of the community, sensing the heartbeat of the people who live here, and striving together to afford each person the opportunity to thrive in health, wellness and beyond. In solidarity and with gratitude,
Melina Valsecia Executive Director
Dan Godec Chairman, Board of Directors
We are following our vision to build a different kind of community foundation, one that has its ear to the ground and can provide responsive solutions to the greatest and most emerging needs of Eagle Valley community members. 3
WE NEVER TAKE FOR GRANTED THAT WE MUST EARN OUR COMMUNITY’S TRUST. If there were more places like this, then the world would be a much better place. Very kind staff, very generous offerings, lots of fresh produce, organic options, and even freezer food. The Community Market is doing a great job uplifting the Eagle Community and beyond. Thank you all. — Anonymous 4
YOUR GENEROSTY IN 2021 HELPED US JOIN FORCES, RAISE SPIRITS AND FEED HOPE. In 2021, your generosity allowed us to jump wholeheartedly into helping reinvigorate, revitalize and restore the health and wellness of our entire community after a worldwide pandemic. Through supporting the efforts of our key programs — The Community Market and MIRA — and assisting other local organizations, you shared your time, energy and resources to help renew our commitment to the well-being of all. We thank you.

WE DON’T JUST FEED FAMILIES, WE FEED A PASSION TO LIFT UP OUR NEIGHBORS. The Community Market provides access to free, nutrient-rich food throughout Eagle County. We are a force for change in our community, based on the three critical pillars of healthy people, strong communities and environmental sustainability.
HEALTHY PEOPLE
STRONG COMMUNITIES
We believe that access to healthy food is a right, not a privilege.
We believe we are stronger when we work together.
We believe reducing food waste plays a crucial role in protecting our environment.
We partnered with underresourced communities in the valley to host pop-up mobile markets that are convenient and easily accessible. This participatory, community-centric environment allowed nearly 3,000 customers more autonomy in the food they receive. Plus, anyone can shop for free at our markets. No hoops to jump through – just good food and community bonding.
The Community Market prevented over 576,000 pounds of food from going to waste through our local Food Rescue Program. That’s almost 5x the amount of food we rescued in 2018! The program ensures food that is perfectly good for human consumption is rescued from local grocery retailers, farmers and food establishments and then properly distributed.
This past year we served 2,750 customers weekly, up from pre-Covid numbers of 1,050 customers per week. As the need has grown, we have: ● Increased our distribution of fresh produce sourced from grocery store donations, restaurants and regional Colorado farms to 59%. ● Increased in-kind food product donations to $1,093,809. ●E xpanded grocery selection and capacity by relocating our Edwards storefront to a larger space at 429 Edwards Access Road in the Vail Health Edwards Community Health Center.

WE POWER A BUS THAT DRIVES WELLNESS. The Mobile Intercultural Resource Alliance, known as MIRA, is a unique bus that meets people where they are — providing resources and creating trust throughout neighborhoods in Eagle County. We listen, learn and respond to concerns and needs in a culturally relevant manner. Our approach to wellness combines conventional referrals and complimentary services to our most vulnerable population, and all at no cost.
MIRA IS HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS ACCESS GREATER HEALTH AND WELLNESS:
8,761

resources and services were provided throughout Eagle County.
8,216
health referrals and connections to partner organizations were made to address community needs.
partner agencies jumped aboard MIRA to offer free services, from health and dental screenings to youth programs and trainings.
6,570
Covid-19 vaccinations were given to keep community members protected.
My hope is to offer women’s health screening and adolescent contraceptive education to the population that MIRA Bus serves. I see MIRA as an essential part of reaching out to an underserved population, which is so necessary for the functioning of our county. — Dr. Elaine Huber

Serving our Latinx population
A family of eight is thankful for MIRA’s roadmap to health and wellness.
The MIRA Bus, in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate in Denver, organized a Health & Wellness Fair at Eagle River Village Mobile Homes in Edwards to honor Binational Health Week. Our focus was to improve the well-being of the Latinx population, raise awareness of wellness and health providers, and provide educational opportunities about different health-related issues. We had a tremendous turnout of local critical health providers joining us.
Susana has been living in the valley with her husband and six children for six years. Once a restaurant employee, she hasn’t been able to work since Covid and is so grateful to the MIRA staff for their guidance and resource sharing. MIRA’s ability to travel directly into their neighborhood has been important for her family. Susana recalls, “MIRA parks where I live and on one of those days, my youngest son broke his arm. I didn’t know what to do so I asked the trusted MIRA staff and they helped me with everything, from medical care to paperwork!” Susana also knows she can trust them to refer her to other organizations if needed. Susana said, “My family had been without heat for four winters and MIRA staff helped me apply through the home energy-efficient program to have a heating system installed in a rush. My family is safer at our home thanks to the help and information MIRA gave me.”
This community-changing bus is now also an award winner. In 2021, MIRA was awarded Small Nonprofit of the Year at the 18th Annual Vail Valley Partnership (VVP) Success Awards. MIRA exemplifies the power of partnership with Eagle Valley Community Foundation, Eagle County Public Health and Vail Health.

OUR VOLUNTEERS CONNECT PASSION WITH PURPOSE. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of all we do, creating the community connections that transform lives. In 2021, our volunteers provided 20,391 hours of in-person and socially distanced assistance.
The Community Market Volunteer of the Year Margo Andrews
MIRA Volunteer of the Year Laura Malehorn
Margo began volunteering with The Community Market in 2019 because she saw the need for all of our neighbors to have free access to healthy food on a consistent basis and the need to help support those efforts. By becoming a volunteer and a donor, Margo chose to be a part of the solution. Generous, kind, compassionate, open-hearted, and supportive in all ways, she has donated her time, energy and resources to help feed community members. A hands-on, active volunteer, Margo made a monumental impact onsite at The Community Market by helping staff, volunteers and customers alike. Margo’s commitment to the care of our community is exceptional and we are so thankful for her generosity.
When Laura Malehorn wanted to support our programs, EVCF leadership wholeheartedly embraced her zeal for community engagement and health activism. Together, we determined that Laura could best add value by helping with the continued evolution of the MIRA Bus.
Eagle Valley Community Foundation offers a wonderful umbrella of opportunity through each one of its programs. The Community Market and MIRA with their focus on nutrition, health and wellness, help to equalize the community. I saw a need; the real need in this community, and I wanted to be part of the solution. — Margo Andrews

Laura’s passion for equity in accessing quality healthcare and resources made her the ideal person to help spearhead the complex coordination of multiple MIRA Bus vaccine clinics onsite at Eagle County schools this past fall. Laura worked with the MIRA Bus team to ensure free Covid-19 vaccine clinics were conveniently available for students at their schools. The Eagle County School District, Eagle County Public Health and MIRA Bus collaborated on the program, helping to ensure 416 students received vaccinations through these efforts. Our entire community is grateful to Laura for her incredible devotion to helping improve the overall health and well-being of our community. I feel connected to EVCF and MIRA because my volunteer interests and professional background align well with the organization’s mission and because its leadership recognizes and welcomes the connection. — Laura Malehorn
RON SAFRAN AND LIVING WAY FELLOWSHIP A sweet way to give back.
In October of 2021, Ron Safran was on a retreat weekend in Beaver Creek with members of the Living Way Fellowship. Instead of accessing all the great outdoor activities in our beautiful resort community, they chose to make an impact in the Eagle River Valley in whatever way possible. They reached out to EVCF and made an immediate and much appreciated difference. We were aghast to learn that nearly 20% of Eagle County people suffer from food insecurity. My goal is simple — to open hearts to that reality. We honor what EVCF is doing with such compassion in the Eagle Valley community. — Ron Safran Ron and his group of volunteers decided that the greatest help would be to purchase essential goods in bulk for The Community Market. Bulk cooking staples are rarely donated, so Ron and the Fellowship fellows embraced the idea and chose to supply bulk sugar to the Market. They purchased 825 pounds of sugar, and packaged portions, and filled the shelves of The Community Market. Thank you, Ron and the Living Way Fellowship, for helping to FEED THE NEED, and for taking action to bring us one step closer to realizing our vision. How sweet is it! 1111
One of the coolest things about The Community Market is they serve as a grocery store where families come in and pick out the groceries that they want for themselves and their families at no cost! It gives families who are food insecure options for which meals and food they want. It helps them feel independent. — Jack Kessenich 12
