-Aspin also called (asong pinoy) was called before as Askal (asong pinoy) is an indigenous mixedbreed dogs in the Philippines. They are medium in size, usually have a more rough textured fur, and have short coats that can be a variety of colors. Most of the time, these dogs are either brown, white, black, have spots of any color, or have a brindle coat.

Aspins have been raised traditionally as guard dogs. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, independent and protective of family members. They are good to young children as companions, due to their devotion to family members. They are trusted by their owners to roam markets or the neighborhood to socialize with other dogs which is why these dogs are seen by the Western people as stray dogs when, in fact, they are not.

By the mid-late 20th century, dogs commonly seen wandering the streets were called "askal", a Tagalogderived portmanteau of asong kalye or "street dog". In 2007, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) suggested the alternative term aspin, short for asong Pinoy (Pinoy dog) probably to avoid the stigma associated with the term "askal"

Currently, the population of dogs in Philippines is around 11.6 million, and efforts are being made countrywide to solve the stray dog situation in a more humane manner than by mass culling

Hero Dogs

Kabang ( Visayan for "Spotty") is a shepherd mix aspin from Zamboanga City, Philippines, who became internationally famous and was described as a "hero dog" when she rescued two children from a potentially fatal motorcycle crash. Mid speculations that he may not be able to properly care for Kabang, owner Rudy Bunggal said he is willing to give up the hero dog.

Dr. Anton Lim, Kabang’s veterinarian, made the statement in an interview on the radio program “Rated Korina” on Friday. Kabang was in the United States for several months to undergo operation and therapy after she lost her snout and upper jaw. The dog saved two children from a speeding motorcycle in Zamboanga, prompting Internet users across the globe to raise funds to help her recover.

“Kabang”

According to Lim, Bunggal only wants what is the best for Kabang, although he still hopes that his dog will get to live with him again. “In fairness to Rudy, sabi naman niya kung sa tingin niyo mas safe si Kabang under your care, wala siyang problema. He’s willing to give up Kabang,” Lim said of Bunggal, who is said to have drinking and smoking problems. “Pero kung tatanungin mo siya, gusto niya ‘pagnaayos na ‘yung bahay, ayos na ‘yung buhay niya, gusto niyang maibalik sa kanya si Kabang” the veterinarian added. Bunggal was given a house and lot by Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat, who also recently proclaimed Kabang as an “ambassador of dogwill.” The dog owner was also given a job in a plywood company.

Currently, Kabang is under the care of Lim, who assured the public that the dog’s basic needs are already addressed. But he mentioned the need for a “buffer fund” for emergencies.

“Actually, lahat ng mga basic needs ni Kabang, addressed na, pero wala ‘yung mga emergency needs. We’re not saying she’s weak or ano, pero siyempre, aso lang ‘yan, once in a while nagkaka -sakit.‘Yun ang wala tayo” Lim said.

“We’re hoping we can get a buffer fund for Kabang. And also, kung ‘di man siya magkasakit, pwede nating gamitin for her advocacy, which is animal welfare. She’s going to go around the Philippines, and that would entail some costs sa campaign. “We hope we can push it para naman ‘yung influence ni Kabang will be put to good use, and ‘yung responsible pet ownership campaign will do well in the Philippines,” he ended.

At the height of typhoon Chedeng, which hit the city of Baguio in June 2003, Wilmar Castillo was busy singing on his karaoke, inside his house by the hillside. Dagul, a six-year-old mongrel adopted by Wilmar from the streets of Baguio, was barking incessantly. At first, Wilmar simply ignored the dog, and went to bed; but the barking went on, prompting the boy to check if there was someone at the door. When he opened the door, he was shocked to see mudslide rolling down and closing in on his house. In his panic he ran out of the house as fast as he could, and forgot to take Dagul with him. Fortunately, this heroic dog survived the catastrophe. Dagul's owner, or shall we say, family will receive a monetary award in the amount of US$500.00. The formal awarding, according to Clifton, will be held in Hong Kong, during the Asia for Animals Convention, in which North Shore Animal League of America is one of the sponsors.

It is seldom that the Northshore Animal Welfare League America gives the award to an animal outside of America. However, Clifton said to Farres that Dagul was chosen because the judges believe that the hero dog's exemplary deed can be utilized in the fight against the dog meat trade in the country, more particularly Baguio and the Cordilleras. There's one thing that makes Dagul's story unique. The 6-year old Dagul, as related by Wilmar and his father Willy, was a former stray. He is an askal (asong kalye) or mongrel.

Dagul

The Castillo family are so happy and thankful that Dagul was chosen. Willy, the head of the family, said that the money will be used to rebuild their house (even if it would mean a small shack). To this date, the family lives in a garage, courtesy of the family of former Mayor Andres Bugnosen. The Castillo's related that the DSWD has only promised them the amount of Php2,500.00 as assistance.

Dogs, even askals, according to Dr. Anatalia Castrence, Dean of BSU College of Veterinary Medicine, are 50 times more sensitive than human, which explains how Dagul was able to know the danger that would befall his master. His story and heroic deed thus proves that askals should not be regarded as useless, dumb dogs, much more end up in the food chain. Besides, they just might save your life.

Celebrity owns an aspin dog Every campaign of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is different because people are getting more passionate about helping dogs get adopted, especially the Aspins (asong Pinoy),” shares PAWS celebrity endorser Heart Evangelista at the launch of her newest “Have a Heart for A spins” campaign. “This campaign is a call for people to recognize Aspins as beautiful, loving and loyal dogs so they should be given the same care, love and respect as pure breeds.”

week. We want to highlight these beautiful Aspins so that they can find their forever homes with a family who will love them unconditionally.”

This newest campaign is part of Heart’s continued commitment to champion the welfare of Aspins and other animals. Heart is so passionate about the cause of animal welfare that she helped PAWS lobby for the amendment After six years, Heart once again speaks for of the Animal Welfare Act the underdogs in PAWS’ newest campaign, (AWA) in 2 0 1 3 , which increased “Have A Heart For A spins.” penalties for animal offenders. Heart is proud that husband, Sen. “There is still a noticeable discrimination Chiz Escudero, supports her against Aspins,” she shares. “I’ve been advocacy. She adds that their with PAWS for 13 years now and here wedding godmother, the late Sen. at the PAWS Animal Shelter, we have a Miriam Defensor-Santiago, was the lot of rescued Aspins who are victims of one who made pet abandonment a cruelty and neglect. You can see five of crime under the amended Animal them in the first ad that came out this Welfare Act.

The Aspin has always had a special place in Heart Evangelista’s heart. Although growing up she was not conscious of dog breeds — as she grew up in a family that loved animals and that took in all dogs no matter their appearance — it was her experience with rescuing Aspins that made the actress-turned-animal-advocate become concerned about animal cruelty incidents in the country. Heart realized that dog-slaughter, despite an animal welfare law existing in the country since 1 9 9 8 , usually involved only native dogs, which are commonly referred to as askals or asong kalye because they were generally the type of dogs you find roaming the streets.
