Buick’s all-SUV lineup leads with the 7-passenger Enclave

eneral Motors’ premium Buick brand rolls out an allSUV lineup for 2021, with four crossover models to choose among in four different sizes. Available are the midsize, sevenpassenger Enclave; along with the compact Envision, the smaller Encore GX, and the subcompact Encore, all with seating for up to five. All car models have been discontinued in the Buick lineup.

BUICK ENCORE

Buick Encore Buick’s Encore small crossover has no major changes for 2021, but there is now a separate, slightly larger model called the Encore GX (listed here separately). As for the regular Encore, the last makeover for what is Buick’s best-selling model brought LED headlights, interior refinements and more connectivity options. The Encore looks like a junior-size version of the larger Enclave crossover. Prices begin about $24,000, and for 2021, there will be just two trim levels, Base and Preferred. With room for up to five passengers, the Encore gives Buick a solid entry in a growing small crossover vehicle segment against such competitors as the Mazda CX-3, Infiniti QX30 and Audi Q3. The base engine is a turbocharged, 138-horsepower, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Optional is a 1.4-liter turbo with 153 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available.

In the front-wheel drive models, both engines come with a standard Continuously Variable Transmission that helps maintain peak performance for responsive acceleration and the power to pass and merge into fastmoving traffic. For all-wheel drive models, the 1.3-liter engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buick Enclave Buick’s Enclave full-size crossover utility vehicle, which entered its second generation three years ago, returns for 2021 with no major changes. But a new generation will arrive this BUICK ENCLAVE

fall with a complete makeover as a 2022 model. For 2021, the Enclave begins at $40,000 (plus freight) for the base front-wheel-drive Preferred model, followed by the Essence ($42,000), Premium ($48,400) and Avenir ($53,800), all with front drive. All-wheel drive may be added to any trim level except the Preferred for an additional $2,000 on the Essence or $2,200 on the Premium and Avenir, which is the recently introduced premium sub-brand for Buick. Last year, there was a new Sport Touring package ($1,695) added for the Essence model, bringing a monochromatic exterior featuring a unique Sport grille with body-color surround and 20-inch bright machined-aluminum wheels with contrasting Satin Graphite pockets. Also added was the next-generation Buick infotainment system, including a new eightinch-diagonal touch screen, standard on all trim levels, with available connected navigation. Other features include an optional new HD Rear Vision Camera and an HD Surround Vision system. A four-way power lumbar seat adjuster with a driver and front-passenger massage feature are standard on Premium and Avenir models. All Enclave models are powered by a normally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 engine rated at 310 horsepower and 266 foot-pounds of torque. It is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission. EPA ratings are 18 mpg city/26 highway/21 combined for frontwheel drive, and 17/25/20 for allwheel drive. [email protected]

Dodge Durango Dodge has revived the Durango line with a roomy crossover utility with three rows of seating, based on the architecture of the current generation RAM 1500 LONGHORN of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Payload has been increased to 2,300 pounds, and the new Ram can tow trailers weighing up to 12,750 pounds, depending on the model and configuration. GMC YUKON

GMC Yukon/Yukon XL The big GMC sport utilities, the Yukon and longer Yukon XL (corresponding to Chevrolet’s Tahoe and Suburban, respectively), get a complete makeover for 2021 as they enter their newest generation. The 2021 Yukon lineup is headlined by an all-new and more upscale Denali version and the first-ever Yukon AT4, creating a premium off-road model. Yukon models have revised styling, upgraded interiors, more connectivity features, additional safety and driver-assist technologies, and their first diesel-engine option. Yukon XL is the same vehicle as the Yukon, but it’s about 14 inches longer to create more third-row seat space and additional cargo capacity. With the redesign, there is 10 inches more third-row legroom, along with 60% more cargo room behind the third row, for the shorter Yukon. There is 19 percent more maximum cargo space behind the first row for the Yukon XL. These vehicles also have an independent rear suspension paired with available Magnetic Ride Control and first-in-class Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. Standard is a 355-horsepoer 5.3-liter gasoline

azda has quietly grown its fleet of crossover utility vehicles over just the past few years, and now has a diverse four-model lineup offered in the U.S. market, ranging from the family-size CX-9 to the subcompact five-passenger CX-3. The others include the compact CX-5, and the newest model, the slightly smaller CX-30. A hallmark of Mazda vehicles throughout its history in the United States has been the driving experience, and today’s crop of SUVs is no exception. Just like Mazda’s car models, the crossovers are fun to drive – which is a plus for vehicles that offer so much versatility.

Mazda CX-9 Mazda’s CX-9 midsize three-row crossover utility vehicle, now in its second generation, starts around $33,000 for the base Sport model with front-wheel drive, or $34,000 with all-wheel drive. For 2021, CX-9 receives upgrades to its MAZDA CX-9

technology and styling. New exterior designs are complemented by a high-class interior featuring new seat patterning and the largest infotainment display to be equipped on a CX-9. Additionally, the new Carbon Edition model helps owners express their individuality with bold styling. Among the newest crop of family-size crossovers, the seven-passenger CX-9 combines large measures of style and performance into a package that not only has great curb appeal, but also is quite fun to drive. Prices range as high as $45,000 for the Signature model, which comes only with allwheel drive. In between the base Sport and the Signature models are the CX-9 Touring and Grand Touring, with each successive model building on the features of the previous trim level. Under the hood of all models is Mazda’s turbocharged Skyactiv-G 2.5T four-cylinder engine, producing 227 horsepower and 310 foot-pounds of torque on 87-octane regular gasoline (250 horsepower on 93-octane

premium gasoline). The engine is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. EPA estimated fuel economy using either gasoline grade is 22 mpg city/28 highway/25 combined with front-wheel-drive, or 20/26/23 with all-wheel drive. Mazda CX-5 The CX-5 is a compact crossover with seating for up to five, and is known for its sporty driving characteristics. For 2021, the CX-5 gets its largest-ever infotainment display, new i-Activsense safety features and a new, stylish Carbon Edition. Under the hood is Mazda’s Skyactiv 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 foot-pounds of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is used on all models. Prices begin just over $24,000 for the base front-wheel-drive Sport model, and run as high as $31,000 for the top-of-the-line Grand Touring model with all-wheel drive. In the middle is the Touring model, with either front- or all-wheel drive. The Grand Touring also is offered with both drive modes. The Skyactiv six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly for steady acceleration, and has a manual-shift mode as well. ubaru, whose line of utility vehicles for the U.S. market always include standard allwheel drive, has a full line of crossover models for 2021, including the midsize Outback and the compact Forester.

SUBARU OUTBACK

Subaru Outback For 2021, Subaru’s Outback, the popular SUV-style all-wheel-drive wagon, is offered in Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT and Touring XT models. The Outback Base starts at $26,795. The Base comes with an extensive list of standard features including power windows, door locks, fuel door, and mirrors as well dual USB input ports in the front center console. With the last major redesign, the Outback got a roomier interior and improved fuel economy for the four-cylinder models. EPA ratings are 25 mpg city/32 highway for the 2.5i trim levels, which include the 175-horsepower 2.5-liter engine. The hexagonal grille and bumper are combined into one smooth front fascia. Prices for the four available Outback models range as high as $39,945 for the 3.6R Touring V-6, with 256 horsepower. The Outback seats five, and has a roomy cargo area that can be expanded into the back seat and even the front passenger seat.

A CVT and all-wheel drive are standard on all models. Subaru Forester The fifth-generation Forester SUV, introduced three years ago, offers the most space, capability and features in its 24-year history. For 2021, Forester prices begin at $24,795. LED Steering Responsive Headlights and SUBARU FORESTER

High Beam Assist are now standard on all trim levels, along with the Rear Seatbelt Reminder. Now all passengers are reminded to buckle up before their journey with an audio and visual warning from the instrument cluster. This generation Forester offers the most space, capability, features and safety technology in the model’s 24-year history. The 2021 Forester will be offered in five trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Touring. All Forester models are powered by a 2.5-liter Boxer engine teamed with a Lineartronic CVT and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The direct-injection engine produces 182 horsepower and 176 foot-pounds of torque. The Forester delivers up to 33 mpg EPAestimated highway fuel economy. The compact SUV also offers up to 1,500-pound towing capacity and features standard Trailer Stability Assist. Also standard across the Forester model line is Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The award-winning system includes Adaptive Cruise Control; Pre-Collision Braking; PreCollision Throttle Management; Lane Departure and Sway Warning; and Lead Vehicle Start Alert.
