We hope that our selection of the readings will be enjoyable and profitable. You will get practice in speaking and listening through classroom discussion of the readings as well as group discussions of general topics. In addition to this we will have a thorough grammar review. The course makes ample use of a feature film and audio recordings to enhance cultural exposure and listening comprehension. At the end of the second year students should be able to participate competently in conversation on a variety of topics and be able to read a broad array of German texts with the help of a dictionary. The course focuses on literary and non-literary texts of varying complexity and difficulty. A reader complements the textbook with additional texts, vocabulary, and grammar exercises. ⇒ German Dab is an intensive intermediate course with the workload and time commitment of two full courses. In addition to meeting seven hours a week, you have to estimate an extra 1 – 2 hours each day for homework. Please make a thoughtful and informed decision whether you can fully commit to such a workintensive course.
Books and materials The exercises in the textbook M i t l e s e n M i t t e i l e n concentrate particularly on developing reading strategies for longer and more complex texts in German as
well as on discussing different aspects of the reading in class. Additional exercises on vocabulary expansion are included in both the textbook and the reader. The grammar review book, H a n d b u c h z u r d e u t s c h e n G r a m m a t i k, will provide you with a thorough review of important grammatical structures and exercises for vocabulary building. Exercises in the Handbuch and Arbeitsheft also encourage the development of conversational and writing strategies. The most challenging aspect of an intensive intermediate course is the amount of vocabulary you will have to retain over a short period of time. We use an online vocabulary trainer, WordChamp, which will help you to study new vocabulary more efficiently. Your TF will also provide you with ample opportunities to review vocabulary in class.
Homework and attendance Attendance German Dab will meet five days a week with two-hour meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is simply not possible to make satisfactory progress in any language without punctual submission of assignments and thorough preparation for class. Because participation is an integral part of learning a foreign language, it is absolutely necessary that you attend class regularly. Three absences are allowed. Tests and quizzes must be taken on the dates and times indicated. ⇒ There are no make-up exams held. Beyond these three absences and for any tests and quizzes missed you must present an authorized notification specifying the exact time period of your absence within three weeks. ***German Dab will also meet during the Reading period, May 3-14.*** Homework Your syllabus will provide you with detailed assignments for each day. We expect you to have prepared the assigned texts and exercises as indicated on the syllabus thoroughly before each class meeting. You will be assigned homework from the textbook, grammar review book, workbook (Arbeitsheft), and the Reader. Assignments in the Reader consist of additional texts, vocabulary exercises, and grammar exercises. Please write your answers on a sheet of paper. The Arbeitsheft exercises will provide you with ample opportunities to practice materials covered. You will receive the answer keys for the Arbeitsheft from your instructor. Please correct yourself with the answer key using a contrasting color after you have completed the exercises. Complete the exercises every day as indicated on the syllabus, as they correspond to what is being covered in class that day. If you wait until the end of each chapter, you will fall behind and find yourself not adequately prepared for class.
Submit all the assignments when you have finished the respective chapter in your workbook, on the date indicated by the syllabus. Audio exercises The Arbeitsheft also contains listening comprehension exercises for each chapter. You can listen to the audio exercises for the Arbeitsheft at the Language Resource Center at Lamont Library. you also have access to the audio exercises on the LRC server: http://lrcnt.fas.harvard.edu – login and password: student/student. To receive the full grade you must turn in two drafts of each essay. After turning in your first draft, your instructor will correct the essay using special Korrekturzeichen to specify the nature of your mistakes. You will receive a list of these correction codes to help you correct your essay for the second draft.
