The essence of science is independent thinking, hard work, and not equipment. ~ C V Raman People are usually afraid of change because they fear the unknown. But the single greatest constant of history is that everything changes. Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to imagination and life to everything. When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others. K P DKUMARANS PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE ‘‘It is better to debate a question with out settling it than to settle a question without debating it’’ once said Joseph Joubert, a French moralist. Kumarans Parliamentary Debate was an online debating session conducted on the 11 th and 12th of July for high school students all over India. Parliamentary debating is a form of debating in which two teams of 3 members debate on a given topic and also gain an enriching experience. In the first selection round we had 102 teams (306 participants) out of which 22 teams were qualified to the next round. Vibha Nadig, a Kumaran alumnus and an expert debater held a two-hour insightful training session exclusively for Kumarans students on the rules and tips of Parliamentary Debating on July 5th. The Asian form of debating was followed. The debaters assumed the roles of Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Opposition, Government Whip and Opposition Whip. There were 2 prepared motions and 2 motions which were given 30 minutes before the debate began. Students were strictly refrained from using the internet during these 30 minutes and had to prepare a 5-minute speech each. They could only discuss with their teammates. The prepared debates included - ‘Usage of crypto currency’ and ‘Compulsion of Surveillance act during a pandemic’. The on-spot debate topics included - ‘Beauty doesn't matter’ and ‘All bodies are beautiful’. On the first day, those who won three or four debates in four debates were selected for the quarter final round. After a series of debates on the next day, two teams were in the final round keen to debate. The enthusiastic and energetic response from the students all over India took the debates to the next level. This was a huge exposure for all the young passionate debaters. They all returned with their knowledge expanded, speaking skills sharpened, team spirit built and confidence increased. KPD ”Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity.” ~Herbert Hoover While the covid-19 pandemic had disrupted plans for SKCA’s usual Independence Day celebrations, our school, committed to celebrating the spirit of freedom, unity and patriotism, held the celebrations online with the same energy this time. Independence Day, a day we enjoy the most, gathering at the grand steps, watching the special assembly and performances and listening to songs and speeches by the students, was observed through a pre-recorded event this year. The program held students, teachers, parents and grandparents, sitting afar in their homes, close together. The occasion began with a few words of warm welcome followed by an invocation song. Then, the principal, Mrs. Chandrakala K unfurled the tricolor and everyone saluted their motherland by singing the national anthem in one breath. The Director of Academics, Kumarans Group of Institutions, Mrs. Deepa Sridhar, enlightened the virtual gathering with her words of wisdom and engaging stories. The Principal Mrs. Chandrakala K, then addressed the students with her encouraging and inspirational words. The spectators were overjoyed on seeing the performance put up by the little dolls of Class 1. The students of Class 6 made the audience crave for their diverse dishes as they displayed their patriotism in the kitchen through the Rasoi Tiranga show. The head boy, then, orated about the importance of unity. Finally, the girls of Class 10 stole the show with a patriotic dance performance. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks. With freedom in their mind, faith in the words, pride in their hearts and memories in their souls, everyone enjoyed the memorable event.
