Dear Brother Thampy Alex, It is heartening to learn that Montfort Senior Secondary School, Delhi, has completed 50 Golden Years in the cause of quality education. In the first place, I wish to offer my hearty congratulations and warm Jubilee Greetings to all those who have been associated with Montfort. I am pleased to learn that Montfort School is planning to bring out a Golden Jubilee Magazine Edition to commemorate this important milestone in the history of the institution. A Souvenir is doubtlessly a tribute to the past, providing a kaleidoscopic view of the history of the institution. It is also a symbol of gratitude to all those who have labored tirelessly towards making Montfort what it has become today: a temple of learning, where children are trained, shaped, and molded through love and care! Since I had the privilege of visiting Montfort School a few times during the last two decades, I feel confident to say that if Montfort has carved a niche for itself if Montfort has become a household name if Montfort occupies a place of pride in the educational map of India, it is doubtlessly thanks to the pioneers who laid a strong foundation, the successive Principals who steered the ship with vision and passion, and above all thanks to decades of dedication by the Brothers, Sisters and the teaching and non-teaching staff, the participative role played by the parents, the alumni becoming brand ambassadors of their Alma Mater, and the encouragement and support received from the Church and Civil authorities. On behalf of the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel, I wish to place on record my sincere appreciation to each one of them for the significant role they have played in the growth and development of Montfort, making it a premier educational institution in the country. It is a proven fact that if Montfortian Education has to achieve its objective of training our boys and girls to become men and women of competence and conscience, who will commit themselves to the service of their fellow brothers and sisters, character formation has to be given primary importance in the curriculum. As Dr. S. Radhakrishnan succinctly put it, “Education to be complete should be humane; it should include not only the training of the intellect but also the refinement of the heart and discipline of the spirit”. I applaud the efforts of Montfort Sr. Sec. School, Delhi, to give special emphasis to co-curricular activities, which are designed not only to bring out their God-given talents but also to offer them training in interpersonal relationship skills, which are so essential for success in life. It is my earnest hope and sincere prayer that Montfort will continue to be a trendsetter in the field of education, forming future citizens who are physically fit, intellectually grounded, emotionally mature, spiritually oriented, and socially responsible. Bro. John Kallarackal Superior General

Most Rev. Anil J.T. Couto Archbishop of Delhi The Montfort School at Ashok Vihar has completed 50 golden years of its existence in the city of Delhi. During these five decades it has educated thousands of boys and girls to be responsible citizens of our beloved motherland. The nation should be proud of this eminent institution and thank the Church in India for its yeoman service in the field of education for five decades. Undoubtedly, the value-based and quality education imparted by the Montfort Brothers in keeping with their religious charism and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ has given this institution its immense reputation in the city of Delhi. It was in God’s almighty plan that Archbishop Angelo Fernandes of happy memory should invite the Montfort Brothers from Hyderabad in 1969 to the Archdiocese of Delhi and hand over to them by mutual agreement the plot of land at Wazirpur, Delhi, measuring 6.41 acres secured by the Archdiocese from the Delhi Development Authority for a Higher Secondary School after a struggle of 8 years. According to records the new school began functioning from July 14, 1970 with 100 children on the rolls divided into five classes (KG to V). The Montfort Brothers with their dedication to the educational apostolate, loyalty to the Archdiocese of Delhi and commitment to the Church’s mission have amply justified the decision of the Archbishop. Only the ‘institution for the handicapped’ mentioned in the agreement has not yet materialized. I pray that the late Archbishop’s vision and plan should not be allowed to go into oblivion. On this very joyful occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Montfort School at Ashok Vihar, I congratulate the Principal, Staff and Students for the achievements the school has attained in all curricular and co-curricular activities while not forgetting the invaluable contribution of the past pupils, principals and staff. On behalf of the Archdiocese of Delhi I pray God to bless Montfort School in abundance and give it an ever brighter future. CRESCAT ET FLOREAT! +Anil Couto Archbishop of Delhi

Message ENCOMIUMS TO MONTFORT SCHOOL DELHI! Jubilees are occasions to be celebrated, to recall the marvellous ways the school has been fulfilling its mission in imparting education, moral and spiritual values, and discipline to help build leaders who will bring about a culture of peace and love that our society needs today. It is also an occasion to reflect on the school’s past achievements and introspect the preparations to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Milestones result from a well-cultured and well-motivated mettle of great visionaries who could foresee the flip and the flow of the strong undercurrent of life. However, milestones are reminders! They remind us of our accomplishments, so momentous and phenomenal, which even astonish the accomplisher himself when ruminated. Fifty short summers and long winters were formidable and still counting immortal years in the field of education. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Visionaries, the Principal, the Staff, the Students, and the Parents of Montfort School, Delhi, on the occasion of celebrating your golden years in the path of enlightenment. To my extended family at Montfort School, Delhi. I say, “I salute you“ for your accomplishments and achievements as a premium school with outstanding academic performance and exceptional co-scholastic success. Kudos to you for the pinnacle of excellence you have reached in the country. You continue to strive to extend the bar of excellence. You have touched lives, carved a niche, and made a name for yourselves in the most endearing way. The glow from your torch of learning burns ever bright. Good luck and keep up the innovative work! Education, as you all know, is a key to success, a passport to liberation. Education takes us from narrow perspectives to broader perceptions, from close-mindedness to open thinking and rigidity to flexibility. Albert Einstein said, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned.“ While theories, formulas, definitions, and derivations are valuable, fundamental, classroom learning, empathy, compassion, consideration, and sensitivity are invaluable to school life learning. School life is thus a combination of the concrete and the abstract, what a student consciously learns and what he or she unconsciously picks up! Please remember that what one unconsciously picks up is what stays with him or her till the very end because they move from the subconscious mind to the conscious mind and then move on to words, actions, habits, and destiny. Martin Luther King jr said, “Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education“ Our toil should be for the attainment of true education. Education, in every sense of the term. Education not just for livelihood but for life itself A life well lived with a good measure of enthusiasm, courage, fortitude, humility, sagacity, love, kindness, and above, all integrity! I wish you and your collaborators every success in the Jubilee celebrations and God‘s blessings in abundance. Be assured that my prayers accompany you all through. God bless us. With kind regards and prayerful wishes Yours in Christ, Bro. Pratap Reddy Asst. General, Rome

Dear Brother T. Alex, It is with immense joy and gratitude to God that I write these few lines on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Montfort School, Delhi. Let me congratulate you, the staff, students, and parents on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Montfort School. I join many others in thanking God, the Almighty, who was the Instrument in the inspiration, planning, and execution of the project, today we call Montfort, Delhi. “Success is an outcome of small little efforts put in the right direction”, says one Author. Many hands have put together their efforts and labored hard to reach Montfort today where it is a shining example of EDUCATION imparted in the large and narrow perspectives of the world. Many eminent men and women have passed through the portals of this institution and almost all have become responsible citizens of our great country and are living their life in an exemplary manner both in and outside India. Golden Jubilee is an occasion for retrospection and begins a new ERA. Yesterday was YESTERDAY, today is a NEW sunrise, giving new opportunities. I am sure that over the coming years Montfort will let go, dare and continue for the sky. For the sky’s the limit! Montfort should further become a worthy instrument of the collective force called ‘success’ and continue to become HIS instrument of change in the lives of many human beings. I had the opportunity to be a teacher and later Principal - for four years - in Montfort School, Delhi. I still remember the very first Higher Secondary Batch of 1977 - all the 17 of them are either Medical Doctors, Engineers or are in the Army or Central Government jobs, who are even today in contact with me and one another - sharing some of the values that they imbibed from Montfort and their appreciation for the teachers who taught them and Brothers who were their guides and example. I am sure that this must be what is happening to the present-day students as well. This is the ‘rippling effect’ that good education can do for the nation. I wish success in all the programs planned and the publication of Golden Jubilee Magazine and the blessings of God on the Principal, members of the staff, and students. May MONTFORT SCHOOL shine in the world like a star in the sky. God bless us all. Bro. (Dr.) Mathew Chulaparambil/Montfort

Message Dear and Rev. Bother,  Thank you for the invitation to share a few lines for the Golden Jubilee Souvenir of Delhi Montfort. I always think of my years in Delhi Montfort with nostalgia: its unique red-brick- buildings, it’s wonderful teachers and supporting staff, it’s even more wonderful students, the alumni who are adorning coveted places in different parts of the world, the ever cooperative and supportive parents- present and past. All of these have made Delhi Montfort unique and an enviable temple of learning. Different people have different reasons for sending their children to a particular school. Whatever be the reasons that made parents seek admission in Delhi Montfort, I have not known anyone who has withdrawn their child from this school if they could help it or anyone who did not try to put another sibling into this school. It is because I believe, Delhi Montfort lived up to the expectations of parents over these past 50 years, without compromising on the vision and mission of the school. Congratulations to all the stakeholders of Delhi Montfort. And different Charitable Societies/ NGOs/ Trusts/ Governments that run schools have their objectives for running schools. For us at Montfort Schools, our objective has always been to help our students become compassionate, caring, and good human beings and live a value-based life, and not just a machine churning out quality products. Congratulations to the Management, all the Principals, teachers, and supporting staff for maintaining the high quality, the good traditions, the sense of belonging, and the healthy atmosphere in the school put in place by the founding fathers of Delhi Montfort. In this context a special mention of late Bro. John of Sacred Heart ought to be made, for, I believe he is the real architect of Delhi Montfort. The succeeding Principals chipped in their share of hard work, wisdom, and imagination. Some years ago I read somewhere that Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of all times, was a guest at a famous socialite’s house in New York. She had invited several people for the evening, and of course, Einstein was the star attraction. The hostess had put on a record of German composer Bach’s music. Einstein, a knowledgeable musician himself, turned to a young scientist who was seated next to him and asked him how he liked Bach’s music. Not wanting to say something meaningless to the great man whose friendliness had touched him, the young scientist confessed that he did not understand Bach. He added that in fact, he did not understand classical music at all. Einstein took him upstairs where he had been given a room in which there were several records of classical music. Einstein put on a simple piece and asked the young man to try to sing those notes. The man tried. Then Einstein put on another record, then another, each time asking the young man to sing along. In the end, Einstein said, “Now you are ready for Bach”. As they returned to the room downstairs where the other guests were, the hostess, irritated at the great man’s absence from the reception for so long, asked him, “Where were you? What were you doing?” Einstein replied calmly, “Ma’am, I was engaged in the most important activity of a human being”. She asked curtly, “And that is?” Einstein’s answer was “To open to another human being the horizons of beauty”. Yes, that’s a teacher’s most important activity: to open to our children the horizons of beauty, knowledge, goodness, kindness, generosity, selfless service till it hurts. And our wonderful teachers at Delhi Montfort have been successfully opening the horizons of beauty to our children. Thank you teachers for this wonderful service to the school and the Nation. Keep going. May your tribe increase. It is said that in the last years of his life, Einstein had only one photo in his study. And that was of our great Mahatma “Gandhiji”, of whom Einstein said, “Future generations will scarce believe that such a one as this in flesh and blood walked this earth”. Such persons did walk the earth: a brilliant scientist who put kindness and humanity far above atomic theories and scientific brilliance, and another man who, because of truth and morality in his private and public life, transformed a nation and inspired the world. It takes a great mind to recognize and acknowledge another. May our school help our students to develop to the maximum their God-given talents and potential and to find their rightful place in society to live a meaningful, fulfilling, and happy life. May our teachers open to our students “the horizons of beauty” to become good and compassionate human beings. Wishing Delhi Montfort many more golden years.

Bro. Philip Thadathil Former Principal

Dear Rev. Bro. Thampy Alex, Respected Members of the staff, students and honoured parents Greetings to you all. I am delighted to share a couple of thoughts for the the Jubilee issue of Montfort Mirror 2021. Felicitations to all concerned for having visualized and executed the concept to be in interaction with all the near and dear ones of Montfort, Ashok Vihar, Delhi, during these lonely days Corona. I pray that God continues to Bless Montfort in his gracious reckoning, during the Golden Jubilee year but all the years to come as well. Owing to the civious impact of Corona virus apart from the millions of people who lost theri lives, the next most affected are our children, and in that sense those that hold the immediate future of the Nation. My heartfelt sympathies are with the children of India as lots of opportunities for multifaceted developments and growth are denied to them. They are circumscribed to labour under unfamiliar and hard conditions. However I do believe in their strength and innovation to turn the corner successfully. Further, I am sure Montfort is already in touch with all their students with relevant assistance to tide over all their difficulties and burdles with particular reference to their Academics. Further, my salutations are respectfully addressed to the Teaching facility at Montfort at this Jubilee juncture for their efficient and effective pedagogical involvements and contributions that led the life of Montfort from the front. Congratulations! I also put on record the sense of gratitude I cherished towards the Parents of Montfort School, Delhi for their enlightended cooperation and collaboration extended to the school for the fifty years of the life of the school. This was decisive in making Montfort -The Parents Most Cherished School-. Bravo! Isn’t that Exquisit?!! My sincerest appreciation to the school Principals down the years and more specially the Present one and his team of Administration for guiding the destiny of Montfort worthily in these bard Pandemic times. I wish to thank Bro. Thampy Alex for providing me with this opportunity to share a couple of thoughts through the aegis of the jubilee issue. With renesed Good Wishes Yours most truly, Bro. The history of the past 50 years of Montfort School is marked by remarkable achievements with the vision and mission of our founder St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. Today it stands as one of the top schools in the country. Thank the Lord for the numerous blessings He has showered upon this institution and the manifold accomplishments and accolades it has gathered. I take this opportunity to congratulate the present and the past principals, members of the staff, students and parents for taking this institution to the zenith of its glory. I feel proud that thousands of young children enter the portal of this temple of learning and leave it as enlightened and refined persons after their educational sojourn here. Today they shine like jewels in society as responsible global citizens. I cherish fond memories of my rewarding tenure of 9 years as principal and 3 years as vice principal. It was a privilege to work with the well-motivated and committed teaching fraternity, an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic student community who were always ready to take up any challenge that presented itself. Dear loving Brother Thampy, Montfort School, Delhi, is completing 50 years of its glorious existence. It is an occasion to look back and cherish what the good Lord has done for this temple of education. The first sentiment that fills my heart is one of gratitude to God for His fidelity, love, care, and concern as I wonder at the great institution Montfort has become. It was a tiny seed, planted on 14th July 1970, which slowly grew up amidst many challenges. I had the privilege of nurturing it at this stage. Initial days were hard, but Brothers, as a dedicated team, took up the challenge with courage and faith in God; their hard work, support of the administration, cooperation of the parents, dedicated service of the staff and students, all together made the growth and development of Montfort possible. Amidst the joys of this Golden Jubilee celebration, I would like to pay my homage to those heroes and heroines who are no more with us but their hard work and selfless services have contributed much to Montfort being what it is today. May Montfort School, Delhi continues to be an inspiring house of learning, a center of excellence, giving out many more worthy citizens to Mother India.

God Bless Montfort School Bro. Joseph Regis

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (Psalm 107:1) Ripples of joy and flashes of memories capture my mind as I look back on our initial days in Montfort school Delhi. It goes back to February 1992 when the Principal, brother Phillip, welcomed us, the St. Joseph of Cluny Sisters to Montfort school to collaborate with them in the vast field of education. What I cherish most is the joy and enthusiasm, the appreciation and cooperation that brought out the best in us, as well as in the staff and the students. In our search for new horizons, we were greeted with fresh ideas which gave birth to creativity and multiple activities which the children and the staff welcomed and enjoyed. Those were the happy days full of life and vitality. Today, I look back with immense Joy and Gratitude to God and the Montfort Brothers for allowing us to do a little good to the young, who are to blossom tomorrow. Message MONTFORT SCHOOL 50 GOLDEN JUBILEE GLORIOUS YEARS Dear All, As I sat down to think and write about the golden journey of Montfort School, Delhi, I went into a flashback 50 years ago. Pictures and memories started with visualization of initial structure with saturated facilities to the present high tech infrastructure, starting with a dedicated staff of 15 odd teachers to a highly educated dedicated staff of over 130 and starting with a handful of students to a well-disciplined 3000 plus students. If I recall the initial years of bonding between all the stakeholders as a family, the same bonding continues in the extended family with full zeal. The day school started its journey, from then onwards it started competing with well-established schools whether it is in academics, sports, co-curricular or extracurricular activities. The schools and the students who used to think that Montfort School is no competitor for us soon realized how to overcome and compete with the rising Sun. Within a few years of its inception, Montfort School became a force to reckon with. Montfort School children won the hearts of each and everyone wherever they had gone to participate with their disciplined and friendly approach. The winning streak started with the first batch of students which continues till date and our students and teachers are always on the lookout for competitions organized by schools and universities. In universities, during the initial years teachers used to ask “from which school you are?”. Our children used to answer “From Montfort School ‘’. “Where is it?” University teachers used to ask. But over the years, seeing the performance of our children in university, their dedicated and disciplined approach forced the university teachers to change their opinion. Now for every new admission from Montfort School, with a sparkling face, they say “Oh! You are from Montfort School. Welcome ‘’. As our school motto is “For the God and the Country”. The school has tried to inculcate moral values, spirituality, and the love for the country in each student. Our school alumni have served and are serving the country in different capacities and different fields. In the magazine, you will find references to the same. If you move around the campus, you will find that along with technology up-gradation, the campus is surrounded by natural beauty – flowers, greenery, vegetation, birds. Full care has been taken regarding water conservation and the environment. You will feel the calmness and comfort of nature. Experiences are unbounded, whatever field I look upon our children have excelled in all the fields during the journey of 50 years. From having an all India topper in academics (along with the ranks of 2nd and 4th positions by students in initial years), a topmost team in basketball over the years, winning 25 lakh reward in KBC, winning medals in art, dramatics, sports athletics, and other activities conducted by Education Department. Winning positions and prizes at National level/International level competitions in Science, Commerce, and Sports are some of the highlights. I am writing all this being a part of this journey. I have mentioned only a few achievements out of endless achievements which you will come to know, as you go through the magazine. I feel proud being a partner in this glorious 50 years journey and moving along with my well-supportive knowledgeable friendly staff, 24x7 available fully dedicated Brothers of St. Gabriel, students, and parents. Congratulations to each one associated with completing a milestone in the journey of Montfort School, Delhi. Special congratulations and thanks to all the Brothers St. Gabriel and especially to those who have been directly associated with the school and elevated the school to such glorious heights. I would like to convey my thanks and congrats to the Brothers through our principal Bro. Thampy Alex, who is working day and night for the school, to take it to greater heights. I conclude by praying to God to always show us the right path so that Montfort School keeps on serving the society and country as a whole for years to come. Best Wishes

Principal’s Message

Jubilees are occasions to be celebrated, to recall the marvellous ways in which the school has fulfilled its mission in imparting education, moral and spiritual values and discipline to help build leaders who will bring about a culture of peace and love which our society and country needs today. They also provide an opportunity to reflect on the past achievements of the school as well as introspect on the preparations to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Montfort School Ashok Vihar, Delhi has already crossed a milestone of fifty years of its foundation. Over the fifty years, thousands of students have shaped their lives and transformed themselves with calibre and character building, and they have passed out from the portals of Montfort and have made a great impact in the society/country. Thanks to God the omnipresent under whose strength and blessings the school has reached its pinnacle. Today Montfort has become synonymous with its quality education. It has become one of Delhi’s premier and leading educational institutions. The tireless efforts and wholehearted commitments to the cause of education by our founding brothers & veterans shaped the quality of our school. They were persons with a determined mind and clarity of vision and had faced great challenges and hardships to help us reach the Golden Jubilee. We have reached a milestone. It tells us to be grateful to all who worked tirelessly to make Montfort what it is today. It is not the time for us to look back and relax about the achievements. It urges us to make the school a better place than what it has been. We need to face the challenges the modern world places before us. Today apart from the pandemic of Covid19-, numerous are the other challenges that lie ahead amidst our world of electronics and machines, competition and individualism. As Montfortians we need to prepare our students to face the world with confidence . I thank all the brothers & sisters who worked so hard with dedication to make Montfort what it is today. I also thank our well motivated and committed staff who have brought a high level of excellence to the school and made it a temple of knowledge and value. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the parents for their positive outlook and co-operation to the school. My heartfelt thanks to the editorial team of this Golden Jubilee magazine headed by Shalini Singh and Reeta Sahoo under whose able guidance the members worked to make their Jubilee issue more innovative and different. As Ratan Tata said “ Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy so when they grow up they will know the value of things not the price”. Let this be our aim for the future. 50 years have gone into history. Let us take the next 50 years as our challenge to the future. May St.Montfort bless us all. Bro.Thampy Alex Principal

Young & Empowered School Cabinet 2020

Ashman Mehra Head Boy

Varnika Jain Head Girl

As the Head Boy of the batch 2020-21, I have a lot of pleasant experiences to share with my fellow Montfortians. This year taught us all a lot. We all had to switch to remote learning and our Montfortian community helped us make this transition very smooth with virtual teaching, online tests and assignments. It was exciting for the cabinet members and the whole team to organize events like“Teacher’s Day Assembly” which was made possible because of the commendable teamwork shown by everyone to collaborate and compile all the events online. Technology gave us a wonderful opportunity to thank all our teachers for standing right beside us even in these tough and trying times. As always Brother Prnicipal, teachers and supervisors were even more approachable, helpful, supporting, encouraging and adaptable to the online mode of teaching which was a very new experience for all of us. Our school has throughout encouraged us to achieve excellence in every field. The Monfortian values of discipline, humanity, working hard and giving back to society are somethings that I have imbibed forever. I was fortunate to be a part of this great institute for my entire school life of 14 years during which I learned, enjoyed and extended my boundaries. This, being the last year of my schooling, bidding goodbye to Montfort School is tough but the memories will always be there to remind me of my roots here.

To be appointed as the Head Girl of Montfort Sr. Sec. School is definitely a blessing as well as a great honor. For me it brought both a sense of pride and responsibility and the opportunity to serve the school fills my heart with greater happiness. I can proudly say that Montfort has made me who I am today. From the shy, sophisticated girl in seventh grade to this confident and hardworking girl in twelfth grade, this prestigious institution and its loving staff are the only reason behind my success. Something I would like to say to every Montfortian out there, grab all the opportunities that come your way and use them to become the person you have always aspired to be. The future depends on what you do today, learn from yesterday and live for today. On behalf of the whole cabinet, I would like to thank the whole management, teachers and students who have always believed in us and our abilities to lead the school.

Montfort Carol Singing Fest 2020 It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring Is the carol that you sing Right within your heart.

Meredith Willson

Jubilees are occasions to be celebrated and cherished, to bask in its glory, which stands tall for its moral and spiritual values, for imparting sound education and focusing on discipline to help build leaders. It is an opportunity to reflect on our past achievements and to brace ourselves to face the new norms and challenges posed to us today. In the month of December, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Montfort School, Delhi, we held the ‘Montfort Carol Singing Fest 2020’, in accordance with the festive season of the coming of our baby Jesus in which 19 schools from all over India participated with 86 entries. In this online ‘solo carol singing competition’ for classes I to V, the competitors sang a variety of Christmas carols in English and Hindi. All our little maestros who took part in the competition made it a grand success. These events would have not been made possible without the unflinching support of our dear Principal Brother T. Alex and the ever so dexterous staff of Montfort School. Results:

Chronicle of Montfort (1970-2020)

Golden Years of Montfort School, Delhi Nestled amongst tall green trees and an expanse of lush green grass in Ashok Vihar, Delhi, is an iconic campus with a regal brick building and a rich profusion of colourful flowers. This much loved, uniquely built red building, holding the centre stage in a tree lined campus sprawled over 6.4 acres, has nurtured and educated myriads of students since its inception some 5 decades ago.

About Our Founder: Montfort Senior Secondary School, Delhi has been named after its great founder, Saint Louis de Montfort. The school draws on the teachings of the revered Saint, who in his lifetime, was a virtuous educator and a noble priest. Till his last breath, he was a believer of self-sacrificing. Since the commencement of his priestly ministry in December 1700, Louis Marie envisioned a congregation willing to go anywhere to tutor and edify the indigent and underprivileged children. Montfort Senior Secondary School, Delhi has been named after its great founder, Saint Louis de Montfort. Therefore, he laid the cornerstones of charitable schools for the deprived and poverty-stricken kids. In the present day, more than 3 centuries after his demise in 1716, St. Louis’ legacy continues to live on in various educational institutions across the globe, through the Brothers of St. Gabriel, thus, benefitting and shaping millions of lives.

About Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel: Carrying forward the bequest of societal welfare, the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel have established educational Institutions globally, including those in Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Spain, Italy, France & not to mention, India.

66

The Montfort Saga in India was started off in 1903 to educate the youth. Being a French Congregation, the Brothers started off in Pondicherry. Throughout India, they traversed from South to Central, Central to North and laid the foundations of educational institutions in 8 discrete Provinces – Yercaud, Trichy, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi, Ranchi, North East and Bangalore. The Brothers then progressively expanded to other parts of the country and today, mark their presence in 37 countries. The distinguished society administers approximately 158 institutions in India solely, including Schools, Technical Institutes, Orphanages & institutions for the differently abled. Brothers of St. Gabriel are assiduously committed to education, with the intrinsic mission of backing destitute and needy children. In order to accomplish this pursuit, innumerable Brothers relinquished everything to cater to the educational needs of the youth. The organization caters to the educational needs of not only children and youth in academic schools, but also imparts technical education, education to the deaf, dumb, blind, the physically & mentally handicapped, and also engages in village upliftment and social work, especially among the down trodden and the marginalized.

Great stories often start from small & humble beginnings. The current compound of Montfort School has been there for 50 long years, and has a rich history predating 1970. In 1968, Archbishop Angelo Fernandez approached Br. John of Sacred Heart with a proposal to start a school in Delhi. Bro. John was offered a land stretching across 6.41 acres at Wazirpur, Ashok Vihar, by him. Shortly, the pioneering work was allocated to Brother Abraham.

Bro. John

The foundation stone of the school was blessed and laid by Rev. Dr. Angelo Fernandes Archbishop of Delhi on 29th January 1970.

Montfort School, Delhi commenced in scout tents on the 14th of July 1970, under the able leadership of Bro. Abraham & Bro. Joseph Regis, along with 6 Lady teachers and 120 students. 10 tents were pitched and used as classrooms, Staff rooms, office etc., Imparting of education followed in these tents till October 1973, until the first building was completely constructed, ready for operation. On the 18th of May, 1970,

Montfort received the enrolment of its first student- Ms. Sujata Kapoor, with Mrs. Wheeler being appointed as the first teacher. Bro. Abraham was succeeded by Brother John of Sacred Heart, who reigned for 7 years, in the period characterized by stability, development, and laying the framework of the right tradition and values for the institution. Ergo, he can be rightly deemed to be the ‘Pioneer’ and ‘Founding Father’ of Montfort School. In the fullness of time, ensuing many sleepless nights, on 2nd Oct 1973, Montfort’s palatial building was wrapped up and inaugurated by the esteemed Vice-President of India, Dr. G.S Pathak. Despite the pinpricks from demanding situations, The school continued to add a class every year to get to grade XI in 1976-1977.

Owing to Montfort’s commitment to academic excellence and quality education, the first batch of students who took the Board Exams, in 1977, passed out with flying colours, with the pass percentage a 100%. All this was plausible due to the hard-working, conscientious, and dedicated teachers and staff members. The school bid adieu to Rev. Bro. John in June 1978. Later, Rev. Bro. Mathew was appointed as the Principal. A firm disciplinarian and adept administrator, Bro. Mathew strengthened the system by consolidating various programs for the development & growth of the institution. A well-organized systematic house system, Artex, which was termed as “Montex’ in 1993, Olympiad and BasketBall coaching was started during his term. Bro. Mathew bade farewell to Montfort on 30. June, 1982.

68

Rev. Bro. Mathew

Then, the liberal-minded and true cosmopolitan Bro. V.J. Mani ascended as the Principal on 1st June 1983. The period of 2 years, for which he was the principal, was tremendously pivotal to the institution, in view of the communal riots in the country. Despite the turmoil, Bro. Mani orchestrated various staff-interaction programs and in-service seminars for the teachers, to promote positivity in the challenging times. Bro. V.J. Mani

He was succeeded by Bro. Emanual P.J in 1985. During his incumbency, the senior wing and the first floor computer lab was consecrated, along with the commencement of the Mini Zoo. Mont cascade – an inter school creative and innovative activity was also initiated. Sundry diverse cultural and pedagogic activities, and excursions took place in his tenure. Bro. Emanual P.J He established the trend of Morning assemblies, as well as the Unit Test Examination System. He was transferred on the 30th of June, 1988.

69

Thereafter, Bro. Phillip joined the school as the Principal on 1st of July 1988. It was during his period in office that the second and the third floor got constructed. Furthermore, Bro. Phillip also introduced computer lessons, and the Play-way method for primary classes. He also initiated the ‘Pilot project of bookless education’ at the Pre-primary level, which subsequently spread across other schools in Delhi. Bro. Phillip bade farewell to the staff in May 1992 to be succeeded by Bro. Jose.

Bro.Philip Thadathil

Bro. Jose joined the institution in July 1992. With a clear vision and foresight, he initiated many programs for the advancement of the educational goals of the school. Therefore, he started the Literacy Classes in 1994, during the school’s second shift, for the poverty-stricken, slum children under the program ‘Education For All’. At Bro. Jose first, pupils of grade IX, under the guidance of Sr. Gracy, got the privilege to teach the students. Later, a staff was appointed to educate them. In the year 1995, Montfort spread its silvery wings on the completion of 25 blessed years of its existence as a top-notch educational institute. Around the same time, a swimming pool and a gymnasium was constructed. The plaque of the foundation stone of the pool was laid on 17th Sep 1995 by the honourable former Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri M.L Khurana.

Bro. Joy Joseph

Bro. Emanual P.J

In September 1996, the young & dynamic, Bro. Joy Joseph took over as the principal, and initiated the process of restructuring on the modern lines. Since then, there has been a substantial alteration in the functioning of the institution. His dream of re-modelling the architecture of the school was finally achieved with the completion of the third block. The latest building was constructed for primary classes with all the then state-of-the-art facilities, and had a distinct administrative block in addition. Brother Joy laid great stress on activities like Project-work, chart making, model making, cocurriculars, sports etc.

In 2006, Bro. P.J Emanual joined as the principal and carried on the advancement of the institution by adding two more floors at the Brothers’ quarters. Under his proficient guidance, the Montfort Nursery was started at Shalimar Bagh, 4 kms distance from Montfort School, Ashok Vihar.

In the year 2009 Bro. K.K Monachan assumed the role of the principal of the school. During his tenure, Brother Monachan envisioned and implemented many initiatives for the institution. His pioneering plans, innovative pedagogical methods, passion and commitment to give his best, accord him a distinctive place among all the eminent school leaders. As the Digital Revolution swept the world, Brother Monachan introduced Smart Learning into the curriculum, which helped foster an interactive learning atmosphere through visually-rich multimedia, animation, and resourceful educational videos for the students and the teachers. O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort dear heavenly and loving Father as your children, as one family of Montfortian, with deep faith and a total surrender to your will O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort at a time when our world is gripped with the pandemic COVID-19 thousands have died everywhere and many more are affected; fear and uncertainty rule the lives of many, because of the lack of a scientific cure O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort trusting in your loving providence fully assured that you care for all of us and that you will protect us from every danger O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort imploring that you heal all those who are affected in any way that you comfort all those who have lost a loved one and give the much-needed hope to the faint of heart O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort praying that you bless all the caregivers and the support staff those in authority, those entrusted with our well-being and all who are giving of their best to address this serious reality O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort asking for your mercy on the poor and the vulnerable, the daily wage earners, the migrants, the unemployed, the hungry those who are lonely and those who are unable to cope with this pandemic O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort thanking you whole-heartedly for your caring and the abundant graces and blessings you constantly shower upon us, even during this time of crisis O God, We come to you today as Children of Montfort seeking your strength that inspite of all our fears and the difficulties we face we may only see your hand at work today O GOD THE HELPER OF ALL AND HEALER OF THE SICK , BE WITH US, BE OUR PROTECTOR FOR EVER AND EVER, AMEN.
