Guide to Using Microfilm LOCATING MATERIALS The microfilm collection at the Center for American History is quite extensive and includes microfilm copies of books, periodicals, government documents, archival and manuscript collections, and newspapers. Original source material for microfilmed documents can be found in the Center, the National Archives, the Library of Congress, private collections, and archival collections throughout the United States. Microfilm can be accessed from many different points; for a more inclusive search, all these resources should be consulted. If, after consulting the following resources, you are still having difficulty locating microfilm, please see a CAH staffmember. 1. Non-Newspaper Microfilm Indexes and Lists. A. Ramsdell Collection of Southern History Documents (Card Catalog Cabinet E; in brown binders on top of card catalog cabinets). Records of Confederate bureaucracy, soldiers, and politicians as well as miscellaneous material relating to the general history of the antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras in the South. The Ramsdell Collection is a result of a project from 1937 to 1940 that filmed printed and manuscript materials on Southern history housed in archival repositories outside of Texas, including Yale, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Library of Congress, Duke University, the Mississippi State Department of Archives and History, and the Illinois State Historical Society. Cataloged microfilm has 4 or 5 digit call numbers without decimal points (ex. 22, 336) and uncatalogued microfilm has 5 digit call numbers with decimal points (ex. 802.43). D. After determining which titles you need to see, check UTnetCAT and/or the newspaper lists to verify title and issue date are at CAH. All non-Texas newspapers on microfilm are located at Perry-Castañeda Library.
1. If the code in this list indicates there is a microfilm (MF) copy of the newspaper, researchers are required to use this copy. Go to the microfilm area (the Winkler Study adjacent to the Reading Room), where you will find the self-service microfilm and microfilm readers. Please do not refile microfilm after use. A self-serve microfilm printer is located below the stairs next to the photocopier. 2. If all else fails, ask a Reading Room staff member for assistance. REQUESTING MATERIALS
1. For microfilm, you will NOT need to fill out a call slip. Reels of microfilm can be found in the self-serve area on the Mezzanine (up the stairs above the photocopier). 2. Microfilm reels and microfilm readers have been moved from the second floor mezzanine to the first floor Winkler Study, adjacent to the Hogg Reading Room. The Winkler Study will close daily at 4:45p.m. 3. If you need help, consult with a Reading Room staff member. COPYING
A self-serve microfilm reader-printer is located below the stairs next to the photocopier. Do NOT use this reader-printer for initial research; use the readers in the Winkler Study. Patrons are limited to 15 minutes of printing when others are waiting. If you need assistance, consult a Reading Room staff member. Microprints may be made by patrons at a cost of $.25 per exposure. At this time, the machine will only take copycards, available for purchase at several locations near the Center.
