TUSCANY The region of Florence, long noted as the source of Chianti in straw-based flasks, has rapidly evolved into Italy’s leading provider of modern red wines, as well as the symbolic region as a whole of Italy. Chianti, produced in 8 sub-districts centered around the hills of Florence and Sienna, remains the most voluminous of Italy’s classified wines and the leading expression of the native Sangiovese grape. What has come to be called the modern renaissance in Tuscan wine began in Chianti in the 1970s, and spread through the central zones of Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Carmignano, Pomino, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Progress has been most prominent alon the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Bolgheri, Val di Cornia, and Suvereto, as well as in the coastal hills of the Maremma to the south. Interestingly enough, the largest Brunello producer is American-owned and the largest Chianti producer is publicly held, causing many to wonder who stole the soul?

Antonio Sanguineti In a nation famous for its invisible speed limits and outrageous drivers, Antonio is truly one of the fastest (to his credit, he’s also one of the best). The first time you try one of Antonio’s wines, you’ll realize how perfectly they match the man–bold, intelligent reds that simultaneously suggest control and grace. But his was not an easy road; as happens sometimes in Italian families, there was a disagreement about what to do with the Sanguineti family’s land. This happened while Antonio was still a young man and, in the end, it wound up being sold. Despite his love of wine, Antonio was left without a vineyard. As he recalls it, “I owned the knowledge, but not the land.” But the accomplished young winemaker, dubbed “Il Maestro” by his colleagues, was not to be deterred. He parlayed his wine knowledge into consulting work, and now trades his expertise for the right to select the best grapes from wonderful estates.

Chianti Like most other wines made in the Old World, Chianti derives its name not from the grape used to make the wine, which is mainly Sangiovese, but from the region where it is made. The Chianti region is located in Tuscany, that romantic area of central Italy known for its sweeping landscapes, burning hot sun and its wealth of art and food history. Long gone are the bottles wrapped in straw and questionable quality, now Chianti is back to what is once was, a wine that can be drank everyday to one that can be aged beautifully.

Poggio Vignoso Located 20 kilometers west of Firenze, along the banks of the Arno and perched between the two tiny communities of Capraia e Limite, is the breathtaking hilltop estate of Pugliano. Now in the hands of “Il Professore,” Luigi Donato, whose family has owned the estate for 150 years, this property is nothing short of historic–with records going back 13 centuries! Together with expert winemaker and “adopted son,” Fulvio Galgani, Luigi Donato of Fattoria di Pugliano has chosen to focus on wines that are unique to the region, such as the ultra-rare Pugliano–a clone of Sangiovese that only grows on their hill!

Chianti Classico As the word “classico” typically denotes in Italy, Chianti Classico covers the vineyard area that was historically the heart of Chianti winemaking. Chianti, in fact, was the first zone in Italy to be officially delimited, as it was designated by the Medicis in 1716. This original 1716 designation falls entirely within the modern Chianti Classico zone. Chianti Classico must have a minimum alcohol level of at least 12% with a minimum of 7 months aging in oak, while Chianti Classicos labeled riserva must be aged at least 24 months at the winery, with a minimum alcohol level of at least 12.5%. All of this and a little rooster, not a bad deal.

Bibbiano Tenuta di Bibbiano was the longest standing consultancy of famed winemaker Giulio Gambelli, also famous for his long relationships with Montevertine and Case Basse di Soldera. Their decades-long association with Gambelli, under whom Bibbiano’s current winemaker trained, still lives on in their traditional approach to winemaking and their commitment to 100%-pure Sangiovese wines. Harvest is still done manually and grapes carefully selected, with different vinification procedures according to the position of the slopes on which the grapes were grown. They are committed to replanting vineyards using wood poles and columns and by planting only autochthonous grapes. Borgo Scopeto Borgo Scopeto is an old and wellestablished estate producer of Chianti Classico. It is a true borgo - a hamlet with its own church, post office, town center, and residences. Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini owns Borgo Scopeto, along with Altesino, Caparzo, and Doga delle Clavule, and she and winemaker Massimo Bracalente are responsible for all aspects of the production of Borgo Scopeto wines. Castello di Volpaia One of the highest-elevation winery in the Chianti area, Castello di Volpaia owns 46 hectares (114 acres) of vineyards, which are situated at 450 to 600 meters (1,300 to 2,130 feet) on the southern hillsides leading up to the village. Just as it has been for the last 900 years, nearly the entire village is intimately involved in the production of wine and olive oil. Volpaia is not only a beautiful village for tourists to admire, but is also a hub of activity where the residents are linked directly or indirectly with the winery. Most of the employees of the winery live within the village’s walls, sheltered in houses that the Stianti Mascheroni family has restored for this very purpose. Podere Ciona Podere Ciona is a boutique Winery owned and operated by Franca and Franco Gatteschi. Nestled amongst silvery olive trees, woodland forests and manicured vineyards our estate offers world class wine and accommodations in an 18th century Tuscan Farmhouse and cottage. Located near the historic town of Gaiole in Chianti, our vineyards and accommodations sit high a on a hilltop, between 1,600 and 2,050 feet (490 and 625 meters) above sea level, and overlook the lush, rolling hills of the spectacular Chianti Classico winegrowing region.

Le Rote Le Rote Massimo & Lara Scotti Lara and Massimo Scotti are an extremely beautiful Italian couple whose quality wines are equally striking. Along with their three boys, Cosimo, Giovanni, and Pietro, they also run a charming agriturismo, in a 19th century villa, located just one and a half kilometers from the famous towers of San Gimignano.

A long list of significant tributes was crowned in 1966, when the Vernaccia di San Gimignano was accorded the privilege of being the first Italian wine to receive a Denominazione di Origine Controllata. The region received its D.O.C.G. status in 1993. Vernaccia must make up a minimum of 85% of the blend with the remainder restricted to regionally accepted “non-aromatic” white grape varieties. When the wine is aged for a minimum of 11 months, with at least 3 months in the bottle, it may classify as Riserva. This is the only white-graped DOCG in Tuscany.

Petrolo Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. While the estate’s benchmark wine, the Merlot cru Galatrona, deservedly receives fireworks in the press and is part of the history of Tuscany’s quality revolution in the late 1980s and 1990s, the winery’s two other standouts, Torrione and Boggina, are an equally thrilling success – Sangiovese from a special and virtually unknown appellation bordering Chianti Classico that today produces wines of distinct regional identity.

As the wine producers in Tuscany are well aware of that fact that the name Chianti Colli Aretini DOCG doesn't really ring in the ears of outsiders, many producers leave it off the label. With good reason one might assume that this isn't an especially prestigious wine, nonetheless Chiantis from this region are actually quite smooth, fragrant and, at times, youthfully fresh.

Montalcino A beautiful Tuscan hilltop town, Montalcino is considered the birthplace of Tuscany’s fullest, richest wine: the long-aging Brunello di Montalcino. The Montalcino region is just around the hill town of Montalcino, and it is where Brunello di Montalcino, one of Tuscany’s most prestigious wines is produced. In the province of Siena, Montalcino is just to the northwest of Monte Amiata and the Grosseto coastal region of Tuscany. Brunello di Montalcino wine is another DOCG and together with Barolo may be considered the wines that age the best. Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, and takes its name, ‘brunello’ from the small, brownish grapes that grow in the region.

Biondi-Santi It is a rare phenomenon that a wine can trace its origins to a single man. Brunello di Montalcino, however, owes its existence to Ferrucio Biondi-Santi and its fame to his family. Now on the seventh generation of winemakers, the Biondi-Santi family continues to produce wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity. Located in the heart of Montalcino, the Tenuta Greppo estate spreads over 25 hectares of vines on soils rich in heavy stones and marl – perfect for the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso. Defenders of a rich enological heritage, the family continues to employ traditional vinicultural methods started well over a century ago to highlight the wine’s unique characteristics, or tipicita.

Brunelli Mauro Brunelli and Anna Savini, owners of the Brunelli Estate, both come from farming families who have always lived in Montalcino. In 1998, together with Luca, only child of Anna and Mauro, they bought more land where they planted vines. Currently, the Brunelli Estate covers 15 hectares of land of which five are registered as Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. while olive groves and forest cover the remainder of the property. Their love of the land and respect for tradition daily nourish the enthusiasm of the Brunelli family who live and work in this field. Caparzo The history of Caparzo dates back to the end of the 1960s at the dawning of Brunello di Montalcino, when a group of friends, fond of Tuscany and of wine, purchased an old ruin with vineyards at Montalcino. The farm estate was renovated, modernized, and new vineyards were planted. In a short time, Caparzo made itself known in the Brunello market. In 1998, 30 years after the first rows of vines were planted, the farm estate came to a turning point when Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased Caparzo. She immediately carried out her objective: combining tradition with innovation to create a high-quality wine that is the expression of an excellent territory. Casisano The Podere Casisano is located in the heart of Montalcino, surrounded by spectacularly beautiful vineyards and majestic olive trees. It was first founded in 1990 by a medical family from Rome, and was purchased by the Tommasi family of Amarone fame in 2015 to become part of the Tommasi Family Estates . Fanti The Fanti Family has been producing wine and-extra virgin olive oil in Tuscany for nearly 200 years. In the 1970s, current owner Filippo first took over the Estate, marking a major turning point in its history. After redesigning and replanting across its 300 hectare property, an innovation-meets-tradition winemaking technique has resulted in extremely high-quality grape growing, all while avoiding any nonorganic fertilizers.

Val di Suga, When you talk about Montalcino it is all about what side of the hill are you, what vineyards do you own. If your Val di Suga, it is just don’t mess up the amazing fruit. They own three of the most famous vineyards in Montalcino, Vigna del Lago, Sputali, and Poggio al Granchio. All very different vineyards with different terrior, you couldn’t find a better example of the regional landscape.

Tenuta Luce Today, Luce goes so much further than was originally envisioned when started as a project over 20 years ago. The estate now has some of the most exceptional vineyards in Montalcino and, as of 2018, a state of the art winery to nurture every step of the winemaking process. The original vision, however, remains the same: to produce a bold and ambitious Super Tuscan that reflects the culture of Montalcino. Agostina Pieri Obsessive about quality, Francesco and his immediate family do all the vineyard work themselves— maximizing the potential of each vine. This is one domaine that takes great pride in its Rosso, treating it much like the Brunello. Pieri is the only producer ever to earn Gambero Rosso's prestigious Tre Bicchieri score for a “mere” Rosso di Montalcino. Perazzeta Alessandro Bocci is truly passionate about making wine according to traditional methods, capturing a sense of place in each bottle, and sharing with the world his love for his land. His wines speak of the terroir and exude layers of flavor obtained from the deep root system he so lovingly tends.

Maremma

The Maremma is extremely different than Northern Toscana. The Maremma used to be a wild, swampy backwater and viticulture was only introduced to the region in the 19th century. Maremma is known for being rebellious and wild, and not just the landscape. This is where the tradition is respected but innovation and creativity are paramount. Poggio al Tufo is located in Tuscany’s coastal Maremma region near Pitigliano, an historical Etruscan city known for its volcanic soils rich in tufo, a specific type of volcanic rock. The estate was the first of the Tommasi Family Estates to be located outside of Valpolicella, where the historical winemaking family is based. Seeing tremendous potential in this once swampy coastal stretch of Tuscany . Prelius In the hilly amphitheater of Tuscany’s Maremma region, above an ancient coastal lake called Prelius, a vineyard organically farmed by the Stianti Mascheroni family flourishes. This vineyard, also called Prelius, is the first venture outside of Chianti Classico for the Stianti Mascheroni family, leaders in Tuscany’s organic viticultural movement.

Montepeloso The properties enjoy two of the best terroirs in Italy: Montepeloso on a gentle hillside of chalky gravel and clay, and Tua Rita in heavier clay below. Climatically warmer than interior Tuscany—and possessing a marked similarity to St. Emilion's famed Côtes—this locale naturally limits yields and is capable of producing wines with great concentration and perfume.

Bolgheri Bolgheri is, above all, a state of mind, a way of life, the rarefied atmosphere of a world thought to no longer exist. As in a mosaic, the single pieces which compose it are of precious materials and colors, but observing them one by one there is no perception of the overall picture. Nature here remains in a pristine state; woods dominate the hillsides which, running parallel to the coast, protect it from winter's worst cold. And, to the west, sparkles the blue of the sea, a sea which mitigates with its breezes the dog day heat of July and August. The vineyards, often wedged into the green of forest spaces or of ancient olive groves, dominates, together with the silent whistling of the wind, a landscape drawn discretely by the human hand. to Tuscany and the super Tuscan to the world. -BolgheriDOC.com Le Macchiole Le Macchiole can best be defined as the “Boutique Bolgheri.” The winery is known for its spectacular single-varietal wines, and their signature grape varieties are Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc and work is always conducted with the priority being “the expression of the land.” The winery continues to evolve in both the vineyards and in the cellar to allow the soil characteristics from this estate property to be the defining identity in the wines.
