MODULE 1. Introduction to HIV According to the 2018 UNAIDS global report, the Philippines has the highest percentage increase (203%) of new HIV infections in Asia and the Pacific. Epidemiology of the HIV Disease:
Number of diagnosed HIV cases has been increasing from 1 diagnosed case per day in 2008 to 35 cases diagnosed per day as of December 2019.
From January 1984 to December 2019, the regions with the most number of reported cases were NCR (33%), Region 4A (17%), Region 3 (11%), Region 7 (8%) cases, and Region 11 (6%). Twenty-one percent (14,498) of the cases came from the rest of the country.
From 1991 to present, males comprised 94% of the diagnosed cases in the Philippines.
The predominant age group among those diagnosed is 25-34 years old starting from 2006 up to the present.
The proportion of HIV positive cases in the 15 to 24-year age group nearly doubled in the past ten years, from 17% in 2000-2009 to 29% in 2010-2019.
From 1984 to December 2019, sexual contact among MSM was the predominant mode of transmission.
A total of 3,730 deaths were reported from January 1984 to December 2019.
