tation in Mitchell. The project was started in 2020 and was supposed to be completed last summer but due to unforeseen problems the reopening date was pushed back this this year. “We had planned to make the bridge longer than the old bridge, but we had run into issues with the soil,” Holthaus explained. “We had done some soil borings to come up with a strength factor

for how strong that soil was. The contractor had their coffer dams so they could get to the bottom of the footings there. When they did that, over a weekend, the coffer dams collapsed in. After taking their own soil borings closer to where the coffer dam was located, they found that the soil was not as strong as what we had found and that’s what caused the delay.” Holthaus said that the contractor has

all the steel plates for the bridge deck. They have a little more work to get the bridge machine set up. They’re looking to pour the bridge deck the week after Easter. Once that’s done, they give it time to strengthen, they have to put the barrier rails in, and do some approach work. Finally, Holthaus stated that it should look like there that there is progress happening.

Spread The Word to End the Word Spread the Word to End the Word is celebrated a day in March where people everywhere help spread the word throughout their communities and schools year-round through activities and pledge drives about the importance of inclusion. What is the meaning of Spread the Word to End the Word? It all started in the early 1900s with the medical term mental retardation. It was used to describe people with intellectual disabilities and has been shortened

to retarded and retard and has become a widely used slang term to mock or put people down. When you use the r-word whether or not someone with disabilities can hear you use the word, it’s hurtful. Not all disabilities can be seen just by looking at someone or even by talking to them. It’s important to break the culture of using the r-word. Its hurtful and offensive to more people than you realize. K-12 students at BE School will be watch-

100 YEARS AGO IN MCCOOK COUNTY Farms in McCook County look different today than they did in the 1920’s. Tree belts typically surround and protect today’s farm homes and the big red barn has been replaced by large sheds that not only house equipment, but sometimes contain office space and even living quarters. The raising of crops and livestock has significantly changed too. It’s safe to assume that in another 100 years our practices and techniques of today will be very much outdated.

The Marion City Council gathered on Monday, April 4 in the meeting room of the City Building at 7 p.m. The agenda was approved, then various bills were approved for payment. Once all that business was out of the way, the topic of the meeting turned to changes to the ambulance board, which was discussed by Bryan Luke. Next up was Deputy Andrews from the Turner County Sheriff’s office. Andrews presented the March report and took on the discussion regarding various law enforcement matters. Next on the agenda was a public hearing to consider approval of adding plats to Gary Wieman’s Addition to the City of Marion. Kevin Wieman appeared before the Council in favor of approving the plat. There wasn’t any opposition. Ptak and Kettwig moved to approve, and the motion passed unanimously. Summer is just around the corner, and the swimming pool will be opening soon. More

We’ve all seen drastic changes in agriculture. Whether you’re comparing the past couple of years with each other, or the past decade, or in your lifetime, ag has had significant changes in every aspect of it. But consider the change in our county in the past 100 years. Can you imagine how drastic that has been? We have to wonder what’s ahead for the next 100 years. Well, here’s some data on some aspects of agriculture in McCook County from the year 1921 for you to digest and ponder over. The following article is from the USDA publication “Soil Survey of McCook County South Dakota” 1921. Agriculture has always been the chief source of income in McCook County. The first settlers were largely engaged in stock raising, but quickly changed to grain growing after the building of the railroads. Wheat was the first important crop. The 1880 census reports the total area in wheat

in 1879 as 1,052 acres. This increased rapidly until 1889 when wheat occupied 198,887 acres; in 1909 the acreage had decreased to 47,893 acres, and in 1919 to 42,521 acres. In 1921 very little wheat was sown in the county, probably not more than 25,000 acres. This decrease is largely due to the uncertainty of the crop, as it is often attacked by rust, blight, or other pests. Spring wheat has always been sown, but winter wheat produces better yields and is more certain and therefore is likely to become the principal kind soon. The average yield is about 10 to 12 bushels per acre, but varies from 3 to 30 bushels. Corn was the second most important crop in the early days. In 1879 it was grown on a total acreage of 730 acres; this increased to 83,339 acres in 1919. Corn has been the leading crop since some time before 1910. The chief varieties grown are Wimples Yellow Dent and Minnesota No. 13. The corn is of the small-eared type but the yields compare favorably with those of the larger-eared varieties grown

farther south. The yields average 25 to 35 bushels per acre but vary from 20 to 60 bushels. Oats originally ranked third in acreage, but the acreage of oats has increased with the acreage of corn, until at present oats rank second in importance with 70,329 acres in 1919, and in 1921, from observation, one would judge that the acreage was almost equal to that in corn. Swedish Select and Sixty Day oats are the principal varieties. The yields vary from 35 to 45 bushels per acre. Barley has always been grown to considerable extent, but in recent years the acreage is comparatively small, being only 5,172 acres in 1919. Flax has generally been grown as a first crop when breaking the virgin sod and consequently has declined as the area of new land has decreased. Rye, emmer, and spelt are minor crops. The land for grain crops is usually plowed in the fall, the oats, wheat, and barley stubble being plowed as soon as the crop has been removed. What cannot be plowed in the fall is plowed early in

EASTER EGG HUNT

Easter egg hunts are a common event in communities this time of year, including those in McCook County. On Saturday, the Bridgewater Activities Club and Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater had an Easter egg hunt. They had a great turn out. The residents of Diamond Care Center filled all the eggs, amounting to nearly 1500 eggs!

McCook County issues burning ban Troy Schwans | Editor [email protected]

A legal notice in this newspaper is informing McCook 100 years on Page 3  County residents that a burning ban has been issued for the county beginning Tuesday, April 5. Because McCook County is experiencing very dry conditions due to the lack of rain, unduly hazardous fire conditions now exist in the county. With the approval of the McCook County Commission a ban is being imposed to prohibit or restrict open burning to protect the public health and safety. “Open burning” shall be defined as any outdoor fire, including burning of fence rows, fields, wild lands, trash, and debris. This excludes fires contained within liquid-fueled or gas fueled stoves, fireplaces within all buildings, charcoal grill fires at private residences and permanent fire pits or fire grates located on supervised developed picnic grounds and campgrounds. If you have questions about the ban you are directed to contact the McCook County Emergency Management Director, BJ Stiefvater, at 421-8392 or [email protected] This ban will be in place until fire conditions improve as determined by emergency personnel within McCook County.

Hanon’s National Honor Society held its 7th annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 10 featuring the one and only Easter Bunny. Kids ages 2 through second grade looked for eggs that were hidden by the school and the playground. The Easter Bunny took pictures with the youngsters and mingled with the kids during the hunt. To top it off the Easter Bunny gave an exclusive interview to the Alexandria Herald.

“I’ve been doing this a long time,” the Easter Bunny said when asked how long he’s been doing this. “I thought being the Easter bunny would be fun.” The Easter Bunny said that his dad used to be the Easter Bunny, so it runs in the family. The Easter Bunny explained why he does it. “I like to see the happy faces of the children when I hand them the chocolate and the candy,” he said. When Easter is over the Easter Bunny plans to head home and sleep. The Easter Bunny will head home but he’ll be back next year to hand out candy to the kids of Hanson School.
