HSFC Library offers a variety of resources from books to online magazine archives. Knowing how to use the Library is very important, as this will allow you to find information quickly and easily.

 

 

This guide will cover the following 4 key areas and provide you with some useful tips that will help you use the Library effectively.

You need to familiarise yourself with the layout, contents and processes of HSFC Library before you’re able to use it properly.  

                                       

‘I heard you can borrow laptops from the library…’ Yes, you can use one of our laptops for 2 hours every day. Additionally, we have 6 desktop PC’s available for daily use.

‘When can I use the Library?’ We are open – Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8am – 5.30pm. Tuesdays from 8am – 4.30pm and Friday from 8.30am to 4.00pm.    

 

Remember, the best way to get to know the Library is to come in and have a look round, and if you have any questions please ask a member of staff, they are very friendly and will be glad to help.

The Dewey Decimal System is a library classification system that fundamentally organizes non-fiction books into 10 main classes. Each class can be broken down into smaller topics, which have their own specific classification ID known as a Class Number.  

The 10 Main Classes  000 ‐ Computer science,  information & general works  100 ‐ Philosophy & psychology  200 ‐ Religion  300 ‐ Social sciences  400 ‐ Language  500 ‐ Science  600 ‐ Technology  700 ‐ Arts & recreation  800 ‐ Literature  900 ‐ History & geography   

Class Numbers can generally be located on the spine of the book. Class Number’s for Fiction Books are slightly different, these books are categorised in alphabetical order of the author’s surname, of which the first letter can usually be found on the spine.

 

Here are some interesting topics with their respective Class Number.  Can you find them in your Library?   

 

Hitler – 943.086 Pastries – 641.865

Sharks – 597.3 Cricket – 796.538

If you know the book’s Class Number and you're familiar with the layout of the library, it’s easy to find what you want on the shelves. However, if this isn't the case we recommend you use the Library Catalogue.  

The Library Catalogue  The Library Catalogue is similar to Google, you can find the book you're  looking for via a keyword search. Our Library Catalogue computers are  known as OPAC’s.   

 

In the search field you can type the name of the book, author’s name or even just a keyword…

 

                                           

Each result will provide you with the name of the book, its Class Number, the author and how many copies are available. HAVE FUN SEARCHING!

Hit enter, and you will be given a set of results which relate to your search…

We have a huge selection of books in the Library from fiction to non-fiction, from study guides to travel guides. But did you know we also offer a variety of other useful resources?  

DVD’s – A selection of films, TV classics and  educational titles.   

Magazines – A variety of educational titles for your  subjects and some lighter reading material too.   

Newspapers – 3 different daily papers available and        weekend papers. TES also available at counter.   

PC’s and Laptops – Laptops can be used in the  Library for 2 hours per day.   

Over 100 study desks – Available to use from 8am  until closing. Study area is for individual study only.   

Philip Allan – Online magazine archive which can be  accessed via Moodle at college or at home.
