WE'RE GROWING IT'SUGAR SPIRIT AWARDS HEALTH AND WELLNESS: VIRTUAL SUPPORT FOR A HEALTHY MIND

A letter from the Editor: Lindsay Mayeron With great enthusiasm, I welcome you to this edition of the HR Playbill. In our first few volumes, you’ve had the opportunity to meet a few of my pretty awesome Human Resources colleagues, Jennifer Johnson, Moira Moxley, and our fearless leader Marianne Scaffidi. They’ve taken you through the hiring and onboarding process, shared some training tips, and coached you on how to retain your top talent. It’s time to introduce myself, the face behind the HR Playbill or, as some call me, the Editor in Chief. I’m Lindsay Mayeron, HR Business Partner- People and Culture. I am proud to say that I have been with IT’SUGAR for five years; how quickly time flies! It has been inspiring to be part of IT’SUGARs growth year over year. I am honored to be trusted with delivering the HR Playbill each month. The HR Playbill is designed to enrich our Cast Members' experience and provide fun content. Our goal each month is to embrace our company mission to provide a humorous escape from everyday life and sprinkle our core values, optimism, passion, ownership, and sense of humor into all the content. As IT’SUGAR continues to grow and evolve, so will the content we bring to you! I hope this issue–which touches on everything from DEI with Marianne, and Training Store Manager Certification, to new store and café openings and our yearly awards – continues to show you how IT’SUGAR is bringing the fun back to retail. Our Editors at the HR Playbill want to hear from you! No story is too small to share, and no celebration will go unnoticed! Let us know what you're into so we can share it with everyone! I’d love your general feedback about this issue and the HR Playbill. If your team has ideas for an article or wants to share a story, I’d also love to hear about it. You can email me at [email protected]. I hope you enjoy reading the HR Playbill as much as I creating it for you!

Sincerely,

Lindsay

5 advantages that a diversified workforce can bring to your store and IT’SUGAR overall! In this month’s Coaching Corner I would like to dive into Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I’m sure you have heard of the term DEI, but does everyone know what it means? First, we will define DEI and then look at the benefits of a Diverse culture.Let’s explore DEI together in this month’s Coaching Corner. Diversity encompasses the ways in which people are unique and different. Diversity extends to a variety of opinions, ideas, perspectives, and values. In a group context, diversity is the degree to which the group includes different people, ideas, or perspectives. The more diverse a group is, the more perspectives are included. Diversity can be used to delineate differences in various categories, including race, gender, age, religious identity, disability status, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, history of incarceration, and educational background. Equity means being mindful of past (or present) barriers that limit opportunities for certain segments of our population. Equity is the fair and just treatment of all people or groups. Improving equity requires analyzing the justness and fairness present in our organization's current protocols and structure. Inclusion is creating spaces to ensure that everyone feels comfortable, has a sense of belonging, and has an opportunity to participate fully, regardless of their background or perspective. An inclusive work environment should be supportive, collaborative, and respectful towards everyone. I love this quote by Mahatma Gandhi: “Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.” As with anything in life, creating a diverse workforce doesn’t come easy. Embrace those different cultures that have various traditions. They also have different values and etiquette when it comes to the workplace. This may cause misunderstandings between team members and potentially lead to conflict. Embrace it, and let’s all learn from one another. How about a “Celebration of Culture” in your store? What does that look like? Well, start small; share cultural traditions, foods, and stories. Acceptance of all and learning from one another with an open mind is a great place to start! So, I encourage you to evaluate the diversity among your team, and when an opportunity presents itself, pause and think about it during your candidate selection process. If you have a topic, you would like more information on, please email me at [email protected].

Marianne Scaffidi, VP Human Resources

1. Greater Creativity and Innovation Whenever a group of like-minded people are together, they generate similar ideas. This is because their thinking patterns are very much alike. However, if you change things up by mixing diverse individuals together, you’ll have a workforce that’s more prone to creativity and innovation — two essential ingredients for success. Think about how that might benefit your business! A varied workforce will be able to exchange unique perspectives and spark fresh ideas. A good example is the Disney brand, which boasts a highly diversified enterprise with more than 200,000 employees worldwide. I don’t think anyone can question their success! 2. Increased Productivity Diversity and productivity go hand in hand. A diverse workforce is more likely to understand our customers’ needs and come up with ideas to fulfill them. Diversity in the workplace will also increase employee morale and instill a desire to be more effective and work more efficiently. This will significantly increase the productivity of your business. Essentially, More sales, more bonuses! 3. Reduced Employee Turnover A workplace that encourages diversity and inclusion will make our employees feel valued and accepted. This will ensure happiness among our Associates. Happy Cast Members will stay with IT’SUGAR longer, meaning we will spend less money and time on recruiting. By reducing your employee turnover, you’ll have more time to spend with your team, training and developing them and servicing our Audience in an engaging way! 4. Connect to a Wider Range of Consumers If you want to target a wide range of consumers, you’ll need a diverse workforce. Hiring individuals of varying backgrounds, languages, etc., can ensure that IT’SUGAR will appeal to a broader target market. Because our employees come from different backgrounds, they’ll be able to connect with consumers from all walks of life. 5. Increased Revenue A recent study by the Boston Consulting Group found that companies with a diverse workforce and increased innovation generated 19% more revenue than companies with lower diversity scores. The proof is in the numbers!
