A SIDE FOR ENTREPRENEUR John D. Hertz Entrepreneur John D. Hertz, who founded the Yellow Cab Co. in 1914 and later went on to own the world's largest car-rental company, left an indelible mark on the San Fernando Valley. The rental car, as Hertz envisioned, was a direct outgrowth of the taxicab business literally, a taxi that came without a cabbie so you could drive it yourself. It took off so quickly that Hertz bought into it and then sold it before the idea could be fully developed. By 1916, he'd taken over Shaw's interest in it, and by 1925, Yellow was the world leader in specialty taxicab production.

ISSUE / 8/

In the same spirit, Hertz had a short but noteworthy sideline of building luxury cars,

one first called the Shaw and, later the

Ambassador.

Hertz made a fortune, especially after he sold both Yellow Cab and Yellow Drive-It-Yourself, as the rental firm was first called, to General Motors and then "retired" in 1929 at the nice, round age of 50. As to the taxis, GM kept building them until 1935, renaming them as Generals. As for Hertz himself, he held a board-level interest in Lehman Brothers, the New York investment firm, and managed its holdings in Paramount Pictures for a time. Hertz and his wife, Fannie, became globally famed by owning three thoroughbred breeding farms, including Stoner Creek Stud of Kentucky, which produced two Kentucky Derby winners. Hertz died in 1961.

Maybelline is an American makeup brand sold worldwide and owned by the French cosmetics company L’Oreal..The Maybelline Company was created by a 19-year-old entrepreneur named Tom Lyle Williams in 1915. Williams noticed his older sister Mabel applying a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. He adapted it with a chemistry set and produced a product sold locally called lash-in-brow-line. Williams renamed his eye beautifier Maybelline, in honor of his sister Mabel, who gave him the idea. In 1917 the company produced Maybelline Cake Mascara, "the first modern eye cosmetic for everyday use" and Ultra Lash in the 1960s, which was the first mass-market automatic.

ISSUE / 8/

The entire cosmetic production facility was moved from Chicago to Memphis over one

week-end. In 1975, the company moved its factory to Little Rock, Arkansas, where it is still located. In 1990, Schering-Plough sold Maybelline to a New York investment firm, Wasserstein Perella & Co. Maybelline Operational Headquarters

remained in Memphis until

being sold in 1996, when headquarters moved to New York City. The makeup

factory moved to Brooklyn in

2000. In 1991, the company adopted its current advertising slogan, “Maybe she's born with it. Maybe its Maybelline” The Company was acquired by L'Oréal in 1996. Acquiring Maybelline gave L'Oréal access to mass markets in cosmetics. Currently, Maybelline is the Official Makeup Sponsor of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week .
