About This Guidebook Are you looking for ways to learn and develop your English on campus? This is a guide to the learning resources and academic support offered to students at Korea University (KU) to improve their English language skills. If you need to take an official English proficiency exam (TOEFL or IELTS) to have your Restriction on Course Enrollment removed, making full use of the courses, support programs, and materials available on campus can help you achieve this goal.

Academic English I, II (IFLS013 and IFLS014) This is a pair of required courses designed to develop first-year students’ academic English skills. The lessons will train you in academic writing, discussion, and presentation to help you become an independent learner and excel at your studies. Classes are offered at foundation and intermediate levels ensuring that everyone can follow the lectures without difficulty and participate equally. International students are grouped together providing you with an opportunity to meet, socialize, and study in a favorable environment.

Major-related General Education Courses Korea University offers a large variety of academic English courses as part of the general education curriculum. Each of the subjects aims at improving a particular skill such as academic writing, discussion, reading, and presentation. Some courses focus on specific tasks like building vocabulary, gaining confidence with grammar, or improving your writing style. Others set more comprehensive goals such as developing your critical thinking skills. While some may be explicitly related to certain majors or fields of study, most courses welcome all students interested in the topics outlined in the syllabus. Find the right course for you by browsing the Major-Related Elective and Major-Related Foreign Languages sections in the course registration portal sugang.korea.ac.kr. Things to consider  the level of the courses can be advanced and many other students may be more confident English users; be prepared to work hard to achieve good results  registration for these courses can be very competitive, you may have to try several times before being able to take a certain course  some of the courses are taught in Korean (Englishmediated courses are indicated as (English) following the course name in the course selection menu) Registration: sugang.korea.ac.kr (during course registration period)

KUOCW In our database you can find lectures aiming at developing different language skills such as Academic English Writing and Effective Presentation. You can also watch English-mediated courses related to your major to increase your professional vocabulary and learn essential theories and concepts at the same time. The list of courses is updated regularly and you can access them anytime on and off campus.

Things to consider  you will get no credits for taking OCW online courses  the instructor cannot give additional explanations or feedback on your progress

Korea University Peer Tutoring (KUPT) To achieve better results and make the most of semesters, you can combine academic English courses with peer tutoring offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Apply for the program to get assigned an academically successful student who will help you with your coursework throughout the semester. You will meet with your tutor for at least one hour twice per week to get help with assignments and presentations, practice your debating skills, and prepare for the exams.

Things to consider  applications are normally accepted before the beginning of the semester; regularly check the notice boards on CTL’s homepage and on KU’s portal for notices on how to apply  as notices are often available only in Korean, you can ask your IGE Mentor to help you with the application procedure  you can apply for tutoring together with a friend to keep each other motivated

Ways to Prepare for Official English Exams Language Courses at KU Foreign Language Center Attending regular language courses has several distinctive advantages: 

you will follow a program designed to prepare you specifically for the exam you are planning to take



you can work on all types of language skills together or choose to focus on one or more of the exam sections at a time

TOEFL LC+RC and SP+WR (target score: iBT 100) These are regular language courses aimed at preparing you for the TOEFL exam. You can take all four modules (listening, reading, speaking and writing) together or choose any combination that fits your needs. Classes take place on weekdays for 10 weeks during the regular semester. The courses offer you an opportunity to take a free mock exam. TOEFL for Freshmen (target score: iBT 100) This is a TOEFL course for first-year students at Korea University. Apart from preparing you for the exam it serves also as a good networking opportunity. The course consists of two parts. Step 1 continues for 9 weeks during the regular semester and offers a flexible schedule allowing you to attend classes in-between lectures. Step 2 is an intensive training program taking place 4 days per week for 6 weeks during the vacation period in conditions recreating the exam environment. Additionally, from the day of the registration you are given access to a preparatory online course, which you can watch at your convenience. In case you attend 90% of the classes and still fail to reach the target score at the TOEFL exam, you can take the course for one additional semester free of charge. E-Learning The online language courses offered by Korea University allow you to prepare for some English language exams by watching online lectures and practicing on your own. Each course focuses specifically on one type of language skill and is available at different levels of difficulty. Course registration is open all year round. Things to consider  the courses are conducted in Korean  access to some resources is only permitted while on campus  to get an attendance certificate you need to complete the course in 30 days Details and registration: •

Click on a unit name to watch the video (you may need to install a video player when prompted the first time you access the page)

More Ways to Improve Your English While Korea University offers many different resources to help you, to progress faster you need to immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. From reading books to watching TV, there are many ways to accelerate your learning. Here are some additional ways to practice your English on campus.

Books and Periodicals Our libraries boast an impressive collection of general and majorspecific English language materials. Ask your IGE Mentor how to find foreign language books related to your studies or browse the virtual stacks at library.korea.ac.kr. A great number of publications can also be read online free of charge. Many major English-language newspapers and magazines are available for viewing at the library. Stop by the UN Document Repository/European Document Center located on B1 floor of the Centennial Memorial Hall to read the latest editions of the Economist, the Wall Street Journal and many other popular publications. Access is open to anyone with a Korea University student card. Alternatively, search the publication you want to view on the main library’s homepage to get access to the online edition.

Films Our library runs a theater where you can watch films in English free of charge. The selection includes popular titles from all genres, which you can enjoy alone or with friends to naturally develop your vocabulary and listening comprehension skills. Screenings run twice per day on weekdays at the Multimedia Room of the Centennial Digital Library.

Other Online Resources Many off-campus educational institutions offer free online practice resources that will help you develop your general English skills or prepare for specific exams. Use them to get familiar with the format of the questions, common grammar structures, and essential vocabulary and focus on your weak spots.
