Solar LED Streetlights: The Dawn of Illumination in India
Not only the ease of installation & maintenance, but LEDs when integrated with SPV has the added advantage of bringing down the capital cost as power requirement of LEDs are far lower than that of conventional lighting systems. Introduction
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
While unfolding the developments on the solar LED streetlights in India, we found out that in the beginning of the decade, there was a pilot program in Shahabad - a town and a municipal board in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh. The area was experiencing erratic electricity supply due to which municipal council wanted to explore alternative lighting sources for meeting the lighting needs of people. Philips Lighting (now Signify) team demonstrated the superior features and benefits of Solar LED streetlights through pilot installation. Based on the benefits seen during the pilot phase, customer agreed to opt for Solar LED street lights and installed it at various places within the town’s jurisdiction.
This reminds me a conversation with Harshvardhan Chitale, CEO, Philips Lighting (now Signify) for South Asia. While speaking to LED World, he shared that India is facing severe light poverty as almost 20% the country’s population has no access to electricity. To which, solutions such as solar LED system can be able to bring far less expensive, sustainable, healthier and environmentally-friendly lighting to address the illumination issues especially for their schools, farms, village streets, etc. “This solar mission, driven jointly by the government and the private sector, can really help in taking the Prakash Path initiative to all of rural India where electricity is unavailable or erratic,” he said. But the extent of Solar LED lighting did not
remain restricted only to the wary rural areas as continuously escalating cost of electricity and rising demand of power have together left no alternative but solar power to be used extensively as the renewable energy source. This is why in an energy-starved geography like India; public spaces now and in future are expected to get illuminated with this new but relatively cheaper system, which at the same time is maintenance-free, easy to install, longer life expectancy, almost anti-theft and affordable. Solar LED street lighting is a customised lighting system that brings light to those without access to reliable electrical lighting. Prakash Path is a government scheme and a result of the central government’s vision under which, converting 100% of India’s

lights by making use of the potentials that LEDs are attributed to can save us 20,000 MW of power consumption and help us make reliable power available to every citizen of India. And why not! As we all know lighting accounts for 19% of global electricity consumption, yet even the simplest of changes–a universal switch to LED lighting–would reduce this proportion to about 7%, curbing global CO2 emissions by about 1,400 megatons by 2030.
clearly shows that we are about to achieve manufacturing prowess in LED lighting,” suggested Shyam Sujan, Secretary General, Elcoma, India while emphasising its proactive role in helping the industry grow – both technology wise and capacity wise.
Government’s Enhanced Focus
State of the Industry According to Elcoma, the Rs. 22,000-crore Indian lighting industry is bursting at it seems and is expected to reach to Rs. 27,000 crore by 2020. “Today, we have around 50% of total lighting converted in to LEDs, which by 2020 would be touching 80%. This
He informed that Elcoma under its Vision 2020 had set a target of 30 million streetlights and 50 million downlights to help the country save 27,000 MW of peak power. “The energy consumption in lighting at present is around 18%, which would come down to 13%, once we meet our target,” he anticipated adding that soon all lighting in the public domain would be intelligent lighting starting from the proposed 100 cities. “The thrust of the government towards creating an illuminated India has many takeaways for the industry.”
Venkatesh Dwivedi, CGM (Technical), Street Lighting National Program (SLNP), EESL, agreed and appreciated that whatever limited success has been achieved till date is only because of the industry’s belief in the government and its agencies to take forward this important task, which in turn put the lighting industry on a price war but for better results. He emphasised that in the streetlight segment there has always been a discussion on how to control the prices and how to get more out of it. “From day one, EESL has been pitching the streetlight segment to key decision makers as lights with individual lamp control. However, we were not able to actually deliver such solution because unlike the DELP, in SLNP the price was bigger barrier followed by the ambiguity in selection of the technology to be adopted for individual or group level lamp control solution whether it is CCMS, GSM-based, RF/ Zigbee or a combination of these.” “At EESL, we have been working with Elcoma in coordination of which a committee has been set up to evaluate various technologies to find out the most appropriate and the best suitable one. This has become the priority as already about 30 million streetlights are there on the roads across the country. This number will be double in not more than just a decade time owing to tremendous development in the pipeline,” said Dwivedi.

upgraded to meet the needed requirement. There is no reason why the technologies will not be upgraded and implemented. But for all this to happen, time is needed. Also, for having robust systems, especially keeping in view the Indian conditions; rigorous R&D is going on,” Seth elaborated.
But at the same time Singh also highlighted a list of bottlenecks in the way when it comes to switching over to the intelligent and smart lighting system. “There are a few challenges in the form of non-availability of GPRS signal, lack of ways to combat power pilferage, ambiguity in selection of control system/technology, installation of lights & equipment, and most important is the absence of needed infrastructure to withstand the technology advancements in time to come. To which, Rahul Sharma, Deputy Manager (Tech.) at EESL, agreed when he said, “We need to improvise the basic infrastructure at the ground level to make it compatible for the upcoming technological advancements. New innovative models with operational flexibility should be put in place. For smooth progress of the projects, there should be the provision of proper financing without any break. Besides, there must have been an on-going capacity building program to keep
Adding more to it, Gautam Seth, Jt. Managing Director, HPL Electric & Power Ltd. said, “For now, there is no development! But with the time passing by and the requirements getting generated, governments are also working on upgrading the basic infrastructure. For instance, we got our first order of smart city lighting from Bhopal, where all the streetlights were to be inter-connected through the CCMS system to the smart poles wherein every streetlight could be controlled through a centralised server using a protocol. Initially, when we started, the basic infrastructure was not in place but eventually while the installation started happening, the communication system also got developed and the central server rooms were created. This is how it goes hand in hand. So, now when we see the change coming, it is going to lead a big transformation where the infrastructure is also augmented and
Advocating the developments, Gaurav Bhalla, Deputy General Manager-Lighting COD, Jaquar Lighting, insisted that the time is apt to react through IoT. “Smart street lighting system comes with a lot of features like environment sensors, billboards for advertising purposes, security cameras, EV chargers, Wi-Fi system along with the lighting – all without complex wiring, but can communicate with each other through IoT. “We are now developing systems, which are compatible with the existing infrastructure. All these are helping LED lighting to penetrate deeper with every passing day, where main drivers are comforts attached to it be it safety/security or smart home automation. All are connected through IoT and can be controlled from anywhere through smart app enabling users to have ease in operation with huge energy saving,” he said.
Solar LED Streetlights – Answer to Many How!

The potential savings from connected lighting–where intelligent LEDs, embedded with sensors and connected wirelessly, can be managed remotely via the Internet–can reach 80%. Adding more benefits to the system is the solar PV modules which make the whole system self-sustaining.
the panorama of lighting needs in the form of tunnels, stadiums, parks, roads, public spaces, corporate buildings, streets, etc., thereby opening up an all new window of business opportunities.
independent of the grid, especially in areas of weak and unreliable power supply.
The decision process behind these innovative lighting choices has highlighted the potential for solar installations to tackle global challenges in agriculture, education, health and public infrastructure that includes public space lighting. Adopting the best and cleanest technologies can create millions of new jobs within few years and slash the energy bills by a third. Adding more to the ecstasy is deteriorating power conditions, increasing cost of electricity, and rising fuel (diesel) prices, which together are aiding to the proliferation of solar LED lighting especially the streetlights – be it rural or urban. Meanwhile, rapid urbanisation is expanding
Notably, lighting is not just about energysaving and illumination, but also it helps improve the quality of life by making the space safer, more liveable, productive and secure simply by lighting up public spaces. Ideally in any geography, lighting contributes to almost 20 to 30% of electricity consumption. As the pace of development increases, it will further escalate the demand for lighting.
An Alternative to Grid Power An individual LED gives a maximum output of 1200 lumen. Luminaires are configured out of around 3 to 60 LEDs. Solid state, white, opto semiconductor LEDs in conjunction with solar photovoltaic (PV) have the potential for garnering energy
It is, therefore, said that solar PV-powered LED systems are ideally suited for rural areas where grids are weak and there are frequent disruptions and outages of conventional electric power. Solar LED light is emerging as an alternative to the grid-powered conventional street lighting systems in rural areas because of their superiority in energyefficiency, lumen depreciation, uninterrupted operation and zero maintenance. Furthermore, LED is a continuously evolving technology, becoming affordable with each passing day and it serves as an ideal energy saving solution in the street lighting sector – both, portable as well as in-situ technology. The energy efficiency of LEDs (as claimed and recorded by the LED technology giants) which was around 100lumen/W in 2008 went up to 132 in 2009, 231 in 2011, 300 in 2015 and now crossing over 400 lumen/W. The field efficiencies are presently around 90-100 lumen/W. The difference in the laboratory and field conditions is on account of the operating temperature and other factors such as operating current, linkage to driver and battery unit, etc. There are other features also as why these miniature LEDs are upping the ante. Attributes like UV-resistant, weather-proof, unbreakable, super-lamination, etc. together make the LEDs robust enough to withstand harsh weather condition. Basically, the mode of building up luminaires of a large size is through clustering of miniature sources into a lamp.

Brands like Havells, Bajaj, Surya, etc. are already incorporating latest technologies to be in tune with time, while new players found this phase so lucrative that they chose to establish their own brands despite being suppliers to the leaders as OEMs for years. We met three such incumbents to discuss their respective products, UPS & marketing strategies. To our surprise, even the wellknown FMCG brand Patanjali found this area so lucrative to enter and create space for itself. Obviously, such entry would increase the hit within the industry to see how the established leaders plan their rule over.
SolMitra – Solar is a Powerful Friend It was various government programmes
towards illuminating India that attracted many players to move in the segment and tap their part of the expanded chunk of the pie. “We came to know that the government is investing huge money funding rural areas especially the gram panchayats for illumination purposes, which we sense as an opportunity,” revealed Atul Mishra, Director, SolMitra Power & Steel Pvt. Ltd. According to him, earlier people were importing all these lights but suddenly when the government made the BIS mandatory, the import market got a severe hit. “This pushed the indigenous manufacturing to many steps ahead. And since, we recognised it way ahead, we planned accordingly and are now ready with our products to serve the lighting needs of the country,” said Mishra. He informed that SolMitra Power & Steel Pvt. Ltd. is an integrated all in one solar company based out of Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Explaining as why the concept is picking up, Mishra stated, “With development all round, rapidly increasing demand of energy has taken the cost of electricity on an alarming rate, which has not yet stabilised and is continuously on the surge. This makes not only the governments focusing on the development in rural area where the grid line is still a dream project, but also private entrepreneurs who are in dire need of cost-effective solutions to opt for it for illumination needs of their warehouses, corporate offices, factories, etc.” The major USP is that it doesn’t need any wiring and works standalone. “In earlier format, there was a problem and probability of theft as the storage was not secure. But for the latest integrated solar LED streetlights, once installed, it is maintenancefree for the given life time, which we are offering five years for the lighting and housing parts while for storage system, it’s three years. Further, it comes with dusk-todawn sensors, which allow the system to sense the intensity of lights or its necessity to get illuminated automatically. Apparently, no monitoring or control is needed,” he elaborated. On the quality front, Mishra suggested that SolMitra is registered with Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). “All our streetlights come tested with an NABLaccredited lab, which has already issued the needed certificates for mandatory standards
angle. In normal LED lights, the illumination varies from 900 lumens to 2000 lumens/W whereas ours come with 2700 lumens/W, which is much more than those currently available in the market,” he asserted.
17
Patanjali – Quality Products at Right Pricing Yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved Ltd., the consumer goods products upstart, recently diversified into solar power equipment manufacturing, wherein Solar Streetlight is one of the major thrust of the organisation. “Baba’s vision is to take forward the goal of the government in line with the Swadeshi movement. With Patanjali foraying into solar, we dream of a better illuminated India in time to come,” said Sudhir Garg, Director, Patanjali Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd. Notably, this is the company’s first exposure to the infrastructure sector and comes after its runaway success in consumer products. Delving further on the need to enter this segment, Garg added, “It’s the right time now for various state governments to opt for solar LED streetlights to illuminate public spaces. As we all know, India is working to improve its per capita power consumption of around 1,200 kWh, this newly solar embedded system can help save huge power just by installing at public spaces, using latest technologies and sensor-based controls, besides attributes like standalone integrated lighting fixture/system, two-day power backup, easy installation - needs no wiring, almost zero maintenance, etc.” Garg suggested that the solar LED streetlights are nothing but a step closer to the government’s rural electrification drive. Patanjali’s latest renewable energy product, solar streetlight comes with unique features and robust design (all-in-one), which make these light points highly reliable for Indian conditions. “Our solar LED streetlights sport high-efficiency Patanjali Solar PV modules, which are comparatively very compact. Its unique feature of panel adjustment according to the location makes it more efficient. We have our own solar PV and battery manufacturing facility,” said Garg.
Solar LED Streetlights from Patanjali of the lights, the luminary, the battery-packs, and the IP-ratings – following the guidelines issued by the Ministry. For our streetlights, we are using the mono-crystalline PV panels for having more density, and hence, more sunlight absorption. It takes 4-5 hours to get fully charged to disburse uninterrupted lights for eight hours.”
Backed by a strong team of experienced designers and engineers, SolMitra has completed various domestic industrial
Powered with LiFePO4 batteries, the maintenance-free integrated solar streetlights are ready to use, very easy to install, charges battery even in cloudy days, and attributes a remote monitoring unit. “Soon, we are planning to add health monitoring feature in it, which will be accessible through a cell phone app. Further, each of our products comes with a QR code as a mark of reliability and authenticity, scanning of which would automatically induce users to register for warranty,” he asserts.
“In a span of just two years, we have achieved an award from IIT Guwahati for the best innovative product of the year, which is only boosting us for more. For our solar LED streetlights, we are sourcing LEDs from proven technology giants like Osram, which are known for their lumens quality – here it is 135 lumens/W. Besides, we are using lenses which allow 140 degree viewing
He informed that at present the company is in process of setting up and soon it will be able to manufacture 12,000 units of streetlights a month. “We want to offer quality products at right pricing for an elongated service to the nation. We will offer remote monitoring system of lighting that we are still working on. Further, we are also going to introduce a health monitoring
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
On manufacturing front, the company has a very robust infrastructure. “For now, we have capacity to produce 80,000 streetlights in a year, which we are in a process to expand and reach to a scorching number of 3 lakh units annually. The one-acre facility is about to become operational in the next couple of months. Apart from that we are also making 500 battery packs in a day for which the capacity varies from 12.5V to 320V.”
projects since its inception and leads a highly trained and disciplined team of technicians to execute the best quality of work and ethics well within deadlines. “We have installed more than 6,000 streetlights by now in and around the state of Karnataka catering to the government projects for illuminating rural India,” informed Mishra, who believes that the competition will be there with the established players but SolMitra has an edge of over them for warranties that are more than what the giants are offering on their products.

system app which once downloaded in the mobile can facilitate health monitoring through these lights. For all these, we have invested around 50Cr and have plans to further invest Rs.100 Cr.” According to Garg, the company will also come up with a very handy app which will be made available to the concerned vendors - corporation or institution - to facilitate them with alerts for required measures to be taken to keep the lights functional. It may be for deteriorating battery power or lumens level. “For all this and many more, we are in talks with the global lighting giant, Philips (Signify) for a possible technological collaboration to offer the best quality lighting system. Once finalised, we will have all the latest technology incorporated in our solar lighting system.” Patanjali’s main thrust is to cater to the areas where there is no grid power or if available, are erratic or very weak. “For this reason, we have selected North East to start with where the condition is far more miserable. This provides us huge potential which we want to make the most by offering cost-effective but reliable solar LED streetlights. We have a fully dedicated R&D team for monitoring and incorporating technological advancements as and when required to remain updated on the latest innovative technicalities,” he said adding that in around a year, the brand will be able to offer other lighting products for various other applications.

Elecssol – Ready to Incorporate the Change
Elecssol People at Work
While on the lookout, we met Elecssol – a pretty young brand with more than a decade of experience in trading in the electrical market, by associating with some of the leading brands in India. The manufacturer, Devang Solaar was extremely busy catering to the needs of lighting industry by offering solutions as an OEM to many leading brands. The company ventured into manufacturing

When it comes to warranty & USP, Sneha informed that the battery cycle is dependent on the product selection of Lithium Ion (one year) or Lithium Ferro Phosphate (three years). The panel comes with 25 years warranty. “In all, we are offering one-year warranty on full system. But like I said system is very robust and run for more than 5 years without any major maintenance required. For anything else, we are here to cater to. As far as USP is concerned, we are going with the change and we can incorporate the newest technology as soon as it enters the market because we have a fully-equipped facility with the needed infrastructure. We are making everything in-house. We can make highly customised products.”
Solar LED Streetlights in the Solar lighting sector in the year 2011 with its own brand – Elecssol with a vision to become a household name in the next 5 years.
The company recognised the opportunity following the government’s thrust on a lighting system which is self-sustainable. According to Mittal, the company started manufacturing and supplying the all-in-one integrated solar LED streetlight system three years back. “We have already installed 20,000 streetlights in various parts of the country including Orissa, Assam and some parts of
On combating competitions, especially with the lighting giants, she opined, “Earlier, there were lesser players in the market, especially in the all-in-one category, which is an integrated light with the inbuilt battery and the panel system. We also have hybrid version of this – with AC-DC both. Once the DC system is not working for some reasons, it automatically transpose to the normal AC system. We do have one which is Bluetooth enabled. We know that everyday newer players are coming in with different concepts but quality is what matters the most, which is our prime thrust area. We are also making drivers in-house. We are sourcing the PV panels and batteries from quality Indian manufacturers.” Elaborating on quality front, she added, “All our solar products are designed as per the guidelines issued by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and come up with sufficient warranty and quality assurance.
Conclusion A major advantage of solar PV based LED lighting technology is its ability to be later integrated into smart grid configurations in the electricity distribution sector because of its solid state technology which can be digitally controlled for illumination level, on/off operations, etc. The street lighting load when using LED systems would be of much lower electric rating that can also be controlled with ease. It is an ideal solution for a demand side management for minimisation of the grid evening peak created because of lighting loads. Dimming, without drop in energy efficiency is a distinct feature of LED lighting. LEDs using SPV has the added advantage of bringing down the capital cost of the SPV system as the power requirement of the LEDs are far lower than that of conventional lighting systems. Hence, the SPV based LED lamps are emerging as the front runners for energy saving, grid-independent streetlighting systems.

“We have been supplying to the country’s various leading lighting brands ¬for years and this is why we can say that we know and have the needed technology. The association with lighting giants gave us an opportunity to learn, understand and nurture the technology. This is because their rigorous and multi-fold quality checks have made us confident on our process. However, we do take the 3rd party certifications if required by the clients. We believe quality is the most prominent characteristic of any product we market, followed by design, manufacturing process, and of course, the architecture,” said Sneha Mittal of Devang Solaar. The quality assurance we provide and the after sales service thereafter has made us come a long way since when we started.
Bengal. Apart from the all-in-one, we do have integrated systems wherein we have the battery and luminary attached, while the solar PV panel is separate. There are different types of the lights available in this segment, and we are doing all. For all-in-one, Orissa has been the biggest taker of the same for us,” she informed.
To manufacture, these lighting systems, the company has its facility in Sahibabad Industrial Area in UP. “For now, we are manufacturing around five thousands lights in a month. And to market all these, we have a well-established distribution network of over 500 dealers and distributors backed by one of the country’s largest sales networks and experienced team of engineers for after sales. Apart from that, we do have offices in major states including Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh followed by representatives in the North East, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu,” she said adding that the company does have a pertinent presence at the international front. “We are also catering to overseas destinations including Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, etc. We have supplied over 6000 streetlights to these places and look forward to have expanded base thereon.”

INTERVIEW
HPL: Steps forward with IoTIntegrated Streetlights HPL Electric & Power Ltd. is a well-established electric equipment manufacturing company in India, engaged in manufacturing a diverse portfolio of electric equipment, including metering solutions, switchgears, LED lighting and wires & cables, catering to the needs of market primarily through their pan-India network of 27000+ dealers and 2000+ distributors that are managed by the carrying and forwarding agents. In addition, HPL supplies their products to Power Utilities, which primarily includes supply of meters under direct contractual arrangements to electricity boards and power distribution companies, as well as through project contractors. Further, they supply their portfolio of products to developers of residential and commercial building projects, OEMs and to industrial customers through a mix of direct sales and supply through their authorised dealer network. The company has recently announced the launch of its new product, Solar Home Lighting Solutions, which as the name suggests, is designed to provide solar lighting solutions for homes. The product is portable and is perfect solution for remote/rural areas especially where people don’t have access to the power supply. In line with the government’s rural electrification programme, the product is designed in a way so as to help people get access to electricity by means of using renewable energy sources like the solar energy, and thus improving living conditions. Gautam Seth Joint Managing Director HPL Electric & Power Ltd.
“Requiring negligible maintenance, it is also a perfect fit for outdoor activities. While having all these advantages, the new product is backed by HPL’s pan India service setup,” says Gautam Seth, the company’ Joint Managing Director with whom LED World team spends around an hour to discuss the state of Indian lighting industry and the company’s presence in the market. Edited excerpts are here to follow:
How do you see the trend in streetlights? The latest trend in the streetlights are that of integrated ones where the panel, battery and LEDs – all get integrated at the top in a single housing. Also, the streetlights are now Bluetooth-enabled. In the past couple of years, the way streetlights have changed or rather transformed is commendable as the applications have expanded and usage has escalated to new heights. Going forward, the expected technology would be IoT-integrated streetlights which will catapult the way streetlights have been used till date. Also, with integrated inverters, we can expect much more improved and powerful systems where the excess power can be given back to the grid.
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
HPL’s Gurgaon Factory
Further in future, these streetlights will become much more cost-efficient, which is going to be an important factor once there would be an integrated storage system. This has to have an affordable cost of ownership and association for upholding till the effective life of the system, which is seemingly possible with more agencies insisting on warranties and other associated things for longer maintenance.
21
HPL’s R&D Unit In short, we have a focused solar team. At HPL, we are one of the few players where all our four verticals have products which cater to the solar industry. So, apart from lighting, we have net meters, solar cable, junction boxes and distribution boards & breakers developed and meant especially for solar.
What made you specialse in solar? How has been the response so far? There were lot of small players who have come in to this segment, but we being an established one in the otherwise regular market, we felt that we need to enter this segment and put a strong R&D to develop more solar specific products. And since the generation is also shifting towards futuristic technologies like in some European countries, India is also shifting very fast. So, gradually the need arises to have those systems down the line for meeting out the need of future for distribution purposes. The advantage we had is a very rich and established background in the arena.
Integrated Solar Street Light down drastically. At the same time, each of the components are becoming much more efficient.
In the last couple years, although LED streetlights grew quite a lot but solar didn’t grow so much mainly because of the maintainability over a period of time especially on how the storage devices or how the overall system would react. Keeping all this in view, we foresee a much more robust system in the making. This is because as the usage is going up, the cost is coming
We have been in to lighting for so many years. We have two R&D teams comprising 100 people. Our R&D is very strong in lighting, in the communication technologies, and now in the storage part. We are in to the manufacturing of electronics. Now we have people who are capable of doing complete integration of all these components in one system. That is where our strength comes in.
For all this futuristic technology, are we infrastructure ready? For now, no! But with the time passing by and the requirements getting generated, governments are also working on upgrading the basic infrastructure. For instance, HPL got its first order of smart city lighting from
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
How do you see the role of solar in all this development? What would be contribution of HPL?
For solar LED streetlights, we already have got approval from a couple of states. In fact, these streetlights need a lot of approvals from renewable energy departments, which we are in process of. At the same time, we are also targeting various private players and agencies, which are either implementing or participating in various solar projects across the country.
22
LED Lighting from HPL Bhopal, where all the streetlights were to be inter-connected through the CCMS system to the smart poles wherein every streetlight could be controlled through a centralised server using a protocol. Initially, when we started, the basic infrastructure was not in place but eventually while the installation started happening, the communication system also got developed and the central server rooms were created. This is how it goes hand in hand. So, now when we see the change coming, the change is going to lead a big transformation where the infrastructure is also augmented and upgraded to meet the needed requirement.
How do you see the compatibility? When we are looking to connect and getting data out of the system, we use international protocol of communication, which of course, is not proprietary to our kind of system only, but can be accessed by any compatible system which is in place. In Bhopal also, smart poles have the provisions of Wi-Fi, smart lighting, telecom and surveillance camera – all in to each pole. So, there is no reason why the technologies are not upgraded and implemented. But for all this to happen, time is needed. Also, for having robust systems, especially keeping in view the Indian conditions; rigorous R&D is going on to develop such systems.
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
We got to know that the industry is looking forward to individual control of streetlights! In a project earlier we did for Ujjain Mela, we set up a cluster lighting system where we had installed group control where a group of 50 lights were controlled and communicated with centralised server. In a way, the efficiency of all those lights could be tracked together. While in Bhopal, we have
come up with a system, wherein individual lighting can communicate with each other and also to central server. But for individual lighting control, the system has to be cost efficient. It’s still very early as a lot of R&Ds are happening to reach out to the best one. Overall, the industry is moving forward with all this in process.
Why should one stick to HPL? Apart from our products which are already quite compliant with various specifications and can meet the needs of today, the important thing is that we have a very strong R&D experience as I ready mentioned. Besides, we have been in to one of the few companies with backward integrated manufacturing - right from electronics, mechanicals, plastics, optics, etc. We do everything in-house. This is backed by our R&D and the expertise earned over the years on various communications on software development and on storage development. When you look at the solar lighting, one needs a partner over the effective life of the solution be it a government agency or a private entity. We are there to offer a solution right from the development till the effective life of the system.
The market has become lucrative enough to attract many small players, sourcing products from neighbouring countries. Is it impacting the ones like you? Small manufacturers coming in with lower price tags do matter, but it doesn’t last for long. Nonetheless, we have to be competitive. There are pressures each time on the pricing front. We have seen it in
meters and switchgears as well wherein we face the same situation. To cap this, we do certain value additions, for which people pay the premium based on certain qualities and technologies that we use. We are here to fight the competition – be it from India or outside. Consumers understand all these very well. Therefore, in spite of so many components coming from outside which are cheaper than many established players in India, consumers have kept their faith intact with us and have continued showing their interest in our products. Keeping all these in view we have chosen to have backward integration in our manufacturing for most of the components and products. The consumer comes back to us with much more conviction of not deviating from a good quality product.
How do you see new players joining in the solar league? This is obvious. Many people come and try their luck when such a huge potential is seen. This is irrespective of the industries. We have seen people coming in various other industries, which ultimately turn in to consolidation. Initially, there were a lot of people in the LED lighting market but then after sometime consolidation started happening wherein people played on their USPs, lot of other new players started losing interest, closed down units and moved away. It’s pretty natural. The same is happening in solar also. As far as HPL is concerned, our strength is always on the product range, technology and consumer requirements. We will remain doing what the consumers want. Eventually, we will find a better place and look to garner a considerable market share.
23
Lamp Photometry Testing
Although there are many people coming in, but the kind of expertise needed to perform the tasks and deliver the results are not owned by all. Normally, like we do in our meters, lighting or switchgears, we keep track on what is the latest and the newest technology and what the customer or the government agency can expect after three or five years. This provides us a base in such a way that we keep ourselves ready with the most contemporary as well as futuristic solution for that point in time.
What is current capacity at HPL? In terms of LED Bulbs, we produce 1,00,000 bulbs per day. We are one of the few manufacturers, who do the plastics, the drivers, and the MCPCBs ourselves. We do the complete manufacturing in our state-ofthe-art facility which houses 80 moulding machines for plastics, and three tool rooms for support in manufacturing. In similar fashion, we do the consumer, commercial, industrial and outdoor range. So broadly, we have a very huge capacity of manufacturing LED lighting products, of which, about 40% are streetlights, which can be converted in to solar if the time asks for as it would just be the augmentation of a couple of components like new circuit and solar panel.
We do have our own lab for internal quality testing. When the product is ready, we do a quality test on our own. However, at times a third party test is done more for validation of the product. But many a time based on the requirements in tenders or in various certifications, a mandatory third party test is asked for, which we get done at various laboratories.
As of now, neither we manufacture batteries nor do we have any such plan for the near future. In fact, the storage system is a different industry and needs different infrastructure altogether. There are lot of global players with huge investment in the R&D. They manufacture quality products from whom we source based on our own specifications. We have people in the R&D, who understand the storage systems and are well versed in this technology. They do the integration for us.
What is the contribution of lighting in the company’s revenue? Overall, the contribution is 20% from lighting, which is a growing vertical for us. But that doesn’t mean all the other verticals are not increasing their chunks. Therefore, I can say that the share of lighting may go up a little bit but not much.
How has HPL been present in the market? We have dealers who are common for our kind of products but we do have specialised dealers who only sell lighting products. Apart from that our sales team keeps meeting with lighting consultants, architects and electrical contractors.
Where the plant located and what is its capacity? Our plant is in Kundli in Haryana which is dedicated to lighting and one is in Gurgaon. Overall we have seven manufacturing units. A lot of our capacity has been developed in the last two to three years. We have actually
factored-in our growth where the capacity utilisation is still at 65% to 70%. This shows that we are capable of meeting increased demand in future.
What made you develop home lighting solution? There are certain government requirements of LED home lighting based on which we have developed our internal home lighting solution which caters up to 10 light points, one fan, a mobile charger, and some other thing. For this, the testing has already been done and we met the requirements of couple of such tenders. This is quite new but the government has big plans to distribute these systems in to rural areas.
What is the total revenue and which region is showing you more potential? We are Rs.1200-crore-company and look forward to have double digit growth in near future. As of now, regional contributions comprise 60% from each North & West, 25% from South and 15% from East.
Having said all that how do you assess the future? As we see, the way lighting is moving ahead, the products are shifting to solutionbased. That is where we see the next level of demand coming from. The R&D is happening globally on chips and other critical components, which companies like us can better integrate to make the system much more energy-efficient. And those taking rapid strides to absorb new technologies and integrate all this in to the system; will be at the advantage.

How do you see the dependency of Indian LED industry over imported stuff? At ELCOMA, we are working in unison to establish fruitful liaison with government bodies to support each other in matters connected with lighting industry and to create motivating environment to promote manufacturing in LED sector. It is due to the government’s promising programs such as Smart Cities, Smart India, Startup India as well as Make In India, already there has been a considerable decrease in import volumes of LED lighting products.
Despite such a big market, which all factors are hindering the Indian LED lighting industry?
all the growth drivers in place to achieve leapfrog development in LED manufacturing sector. Obviously the role of the Government as facilitator is very important to achieve the desired growth rate.
When it comes to components, by when can we become selfdependent?
Why is India hesitant on LED chip manufacturing? What support(s) do you expect from the Government on this front?
At ELCOMA we aim to transform India into a global manufacturing and export hub of superior, but economical LED products and we are marching ahead with the dream of making our country self-dependent in LED components manufacturing. The organisation is instrumental in bringing several issues faced by the electric lamp and component manufacturers in the entire country to the fore. With a clear vision, we are working in unison to establish fruitful liaison with government bodies to support each other in matters connected with lighting industry.
How important is the role of Government for this? We expect the next one decade will be crucial for the growth of Indian LED sector since the latest innovations are quickly replacing the older ones and a new round of revolution and transformation in technology have already gained momentum. We must seize this important opportunity to enable
Being a nascent market, India is yet to realise its full potential in all the areas of LED components manufacturing. However, this is not the only reason why India is still hesitant on LED chip manufacturing. Currently, LED chip manufacturing is dominated by the bigger global players across the world, only since chip manufacturing is by far most capital intensive. The industry requires ample support from the government to take on the challenges thrown by the global manufactures. Moreover cheap import from China is another threat to LED chip manufacturing. It is therefore the government must discourage such imports by applying heavy import duties and then it should provide ample financial support to the manufacturers in the industry to transform the current scenario on LED chip manufacturing front.
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
Even though the LED market is growing considerably, there are a lot of factors which are affecting the industry. Problems like high cost of manufacturing, lack of awareness and low quality products being produced by illegal fly by night operators are among the key challenges currently being faced by lighting majors in India. However, the Government is doing commendable job to promote LED market segment by introducing many schemes like LED bulb distribution under domestic efficient lighting programme in Delhi, National Programme for LED-based Home and Street Lighting, apart from distributing free LED lights
in rural areas. All these efforts are jointly promoting the growth of lighting sector with simultaneously providing level playing field to all the lighting manufactures of the country.

Recently, the iconic building was lit with LEDs to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October 2018. According to the statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said the storyline projected in LED videos showcases the relevance of Mahatma’s life and philosophy in today’s world and his ability to inspire the generation of today. The LED display was not only attractive; however, extremely engaging as it broadcasted Gandhi Ji’s famous philosophy. The Indian missions arranged LED video projections highlighting Bapu’s life and philosophy at 120 locations globally, including at famous landmarks such as Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and the UK’s Piccadilly Circus. “To celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, missions abroad
will continue to highlight the relevance of Gandhi in a unique way — through projecting his message in the form of an LED video on iconic buildings in these countries or on other prominent locations,” the statement said. India’s ambassador to UAE Navdeep Suri said, “I am delighted that we are celebrating one of the tallest personalities the world has seen by screening his image on the iconic building. I am sure that the events we will organize over the next few months will not only remind all of us about the enduring message of Mahatma Gandhi but also motivate us to put some of his lessons into practice.” “Such a joy to see the Burj Khalifa lit up with Gandhiji - visuals, text and music in perfect harmony. A big thanks to our friends at Emaar and the great team at @cgidubai for making it happen,” he added. Marking the event as a “gesture of manifestation of the strong friendly ties between India & UAE”, Consul General Vipul applauded at the support of the Emaar and the leadership of UAE for especially organizing the LED display on Burj Khalifa.

Hyatt Place, Rameshwaram: Marrying Traditional Ethics with Modern Ethos Given an extremely strict budget of less than 0.5 US$/sqft and energy constraints of less than 0.5W/sqft, the lighting design team went on to setting a benchmark, meeting all the challenges.
The Site, Location & Its Visual Treat
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
Hyatt Place Rameshwaram is a new generation of hotels that offers casual hospitality in a smartly designed, hightech and modern environment. However, designing and building an upscale selectservice brand hotel like the Hyatt Place – differentiated by its modern product design, smart features, relaxed service model and fresh aesthetic – in a city like Rameshwaram presented its own challenges. Nestled on a beautiful island on the lower side of India and separated from Sri Lanka by the small Pamban channel, Rameshwaram is considered one of the holiest places in India. This religious city has a unique historical backdrop, as this is where Lord Rama from the Hindu mythology created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka.
Renowned for its pilgrimage centres and great religious value, it attracts visitors from all over India and abroad. Having witnessed many dynasties, its medieval Dravidian architecture is a visual treat for artists and designers. The tranquil beauty of its temple architecture apparently provides great peace of mind. It is also famous for its various local markets.
31
Going with 100% LED Way The client JKR Enterprise intended to achieve a rate premium based on its superior product and service offering in addition to Hyatt’s strong brand recognition. Hundreds of hours of research with the architects, designers and consultants helped create an exciting hotel design with a competitive cost-per-key rate in the upscale selectservice category. It features over 100 guestrooms, a teen club, function rooms, ballrooms, a business centre, day spa, extensive restaurants and a resort-style pool retreat. This resort experience includes direct interaction with the Rameshwaram climate due to its open-air food and beverage outlets and public areas. The lighting brief given to Lighting Research & Design was to be very mindful of operational expenses apart from capital expenses. Considering all the constraints, going the 100% LED way seemed like the best option.
Illuminating Exterior & Façade The exterior and façade lighting treatment highlighting the unique architectural and design features of the property create a dramatic tonal contrast between the natural materials and the incredible Rameshwaram night sky. However, care has been taken to integrate these lighting treatments into the architectural features so as to reduce light pollution as well as the light sources’ visual presence. 36W LED Linear grazers highlight the vertical façade elements formed by the recesses between the guestrooms windows and roof overhangs while preventing light trespass and light spill. Similarly, 2x18W LED updownlights highlight the vertical elements between the upper ground floor lounge windows with the roof overhangs preventing sky glow.
Landscape Lighting - Reinforcing Sense of Luxury

facings on the entry ramp stonewall, guiding guests into the billowing reception canopy. The canopy’s graceful gabled form is gently illuminated with beam-integrated coves, offering a warm and inviting welcome experience. 14W/m LED strips tucked into the beams provide an ambient glow while custom-designed Fish-shaped pendants reminiscent of the local Rameshwaram culture contributes a textured luminous sparkle.
Matching Interiors with Dravidian Art The entire interior is entrenched in culture and history in the form of paintings and photographs of Dravidian art and architecture. Guests are greeted with a giant photograph of the Ramanathaswamy temple highlighted with 10W LED adjustable spotlights upon entering the double-height airlock and security check area. Similar 10W spotlights integrated in the pelmet uplight the adjacent textured wall thereby framing the photograph. A similar toned corner photograph of the Rameshwaram beach backlit with LED strips greets the guests in the reception lobby area. A sense of similarity is maintained with miniature 5W LED downlights integrated within rectangular cut-outs in the dark-wood ceiling providing general illumination in the air-lock, reception lobby and lounge areas.
Ceiling Coves Unveiling Reflections with LED Strips The lounge areas consist of casual seating with custom decorative floor lamps. The concept of artwork photograph is taken to the ceiling in the Internet kiosk section of the lounge area. The LED strips within ceiling coves provide the dual purpose of highlighting the photograph as well as provide soft diffuse illumination sans veiling reflections for guests working on computer. Similar LED strips are integrated with the cabinets highlighting the artefacts placed within these cabinets. The reception counter itself is the centre-point of attention with LED strips integrated within the counter to graze the tiled surface as well as backlighting the fritted glass partitions above the counter.

Pre-set controlled light settings subtly shift the guest experience, seamlessly transitioning spaces from day to night. With 6,000 employees, the company is able to cater to more than 60,000 channel partners and millions of customers. Company’s motto has always been customer delight through innovation & passion with focus on execution & team-work. Going forward, the company which is celebrating the completion of 30 years of excellence, has unveiled its widest range of solar solutions for homes and small business establishments. Following which, we, at LED World, met Sachin Bhalla, Sr. Vice President-Marketing to know more on the potentials for solar power in the Indian market and how the company is strategising to grab those opportunities. Here are the edited excerpts to follow:
Sachin Bhalla, Sr. Vice President-Marketing Luminous Power Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
What made Luminous to enter the Solar Power segment? As we already have a very long standing history in the power backup industry owing to our power solutions business, we identified solar sector as another growth area where we offer our consumers complete end-to-end residential solar solutions. Today we are one of the biggest player in home solar segment.
What’s there in the company’s new portfolio for Solar products?
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
Let me tell you that before unveiling this new range, we spent last few years in R&D on developing products and technology for solar power industry, and remained focused on upgrading to solar. No wonder, we have unveiled the widest range of solar products & solutions with special emphasis on innovation. Our product portfolio consists of solar panels, inverters, charge controllers and batteries for all types of residential as well as for small commercial requirements. We have also launched Regalia which is a wall-mounted Lithium Ion-run power back up system that is solar-enabled. This new inverter comes in two variants of 500W and 900W power with in-built lithium ion batteries, which can store power from both, grid lines as well as solar. We now offer
individual components as well as end-to-end rooftop solar solutions.
What are the features of your home solution range? Why should one rely on Luminous? With our solar products we are focussing only on home solutions, which is why we have a range of 500W to 25kW. Besides, we have all the answers that are needed to address the concerns of home owners or small shop owners. We have a trusted relationship with our customers as we are catering to their power needs for more than three decades. We have to live up to the expectations of delivering the same value in solar which we have done in inverters and batteries business. And, therefore, we would like our valued customers to trust the same way and allow us to cater to them with quality solar products and solutions as per their requirements.
What differentiates Luminous from the league? Understanding the customer requirement and deploying appropriate solution is the core to succeed in solar business along with a robust service network. Home solution market is not as big as power backup market today. Therefore, companies entering in to
this segment have neither yet understood the needs of the consumer properly nor have they created a service network needed to fulfil the requirements. However, we have a tried & tested range of products for each & every solar need and a very strong service network is in place owing to our already established power backup business. Our technicians are fully trained and wellversed in tackling any issue related to solar solutions.
Why Luminous is so late in the solar power market? Luminous has been in this business for last five years. Till the last two years, the market was only restricted to places where the power cut was very high and the existing power back up system was unable to fulfill the requirements. However, now there is a shift in the focus of the business owing to the rapid increase in the cost of power and increased adoption of solar in homes.
Where do you source the panels? How do you check the quality? We have the best quality vendors/ suppliers to whom we provide our technical specifications based on which they manufacture PV cells or solar panels for us. These panels go through rigorous quality
checks before Luminous logo is printed on them.
35
Which all factors are driving solar power business in India? Yet to improve power distribution system, power cuts, increasing cost of electricity, and rising fuel (diesel) prices are together aiding solar power adaption. People are also becoming more aware of the short term (savings) as well as long term (sustainable environment) benefits of harnessing solar power.
How do you plan your presence in the market? We already have a well-established distribution network owing to our decadesold power backup business. We are training these partners to educate the consumer and suggest the correct solution as per his need. At the same time we are offering our products to new system integrators in the market.
What is the contribution of Solar Power business in the company’s total revenue?
Solar Solution with Backup (Off-grid Solutions)
We are expecting 10% contribution from our solar power business to the company’s total revenue. However, we hope to increase this contribution to 15% in the next fiscal.

Humayun’s Tomb Dome will Glitter with LEDs in The Nights
The grand white marble dome of the 16thcentury mausoleum of the Mughal kingHumayun’s Tomb will get more glorious by shining brightly at night throughout the year. The iconic monument is getting restored with the installation of 800 energy efficient lamps.
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
The implementation of the beams of LED luminaires will be directed from the bottom towards the top and will highlight the dome such as mimicking the moonlight effect simultaneously enhancing the look of the structure in an aesthetic manner. The dome is going to be lit after sunset every day for almost five hours. The high energy consuming halogen light fixtures which were installed at the tomb in the year 1999 have been replaced by LED bulbs. Furthermore, the new lights at the monuments will lower down the power
consumption by 90%, said Ratish Nanda, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) - which is behind the restoration of the monument. According to him, the illumination of the dome was a challenge because lighting had to be designed in a way to restrict any shadow on the surface of the structure. “The structure is now visible from all directions Nizamuddin bridge (east), Barapullah elevated road (south), Zakir Husain Marg flyover (north), and Lodi Road flyover (south). The illuminated dome will enhance the skyline of the city. Havells India Limited has borne the entire cost of the lighting fixtures as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme,” said Nanda. Aga Khan Trust for Culture undertook the restoration of Humayun’s Tomb, the first garden tomb in Indian subcontinent built-
in 1570 in 1997. As of today the trust has restored 50 ancient structures in its vicinity and neighboring Nizamuddin Basti, Sundar Nursery complex and Batasheywala tomb. The preservation of the famous monument has been going on for quite some time with the proper measure being undertaken to get it back to its old glory. Keeping that as a priority, as well as the safety of the heritage building and visitors the lights are installed 100 metres away from the main structure. Timers will also be installed soon so that light will switch off automatically, according to Nanda “The fixtures have been installed in a manner that the historic character of the site is not compromised for daytime visitors. The electric cables have been laid outside the tomb’s enclosed walled garden to ensure that no damage is done to the underlying archaeological structure,” said Nanda.

Structural Details of Qutub Minar Enhanced with Energy Efficient Lights
Qutub Minar is a 73-metre-tall tapering tower having five storeys, built by Shamsud-Din Altamash, the Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty with origins in Turkey. Also, it the highest brick structure in India. The experience of visiting and walking across the 12th century Qutub Minar complex after sunset will soon be a great experience with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) deciding to restore the minaret by replacing the façade lights with ‘architectural lights’. The new lighting which will be similar to the ones installed at Red Fort will amplify the look of the Minar complex offering a detailed view of its magnificent architecture, calligraphic verses, corbels, and intricate carving to the visitors/tourists even at night.
“Our historic buildings look weak in comparison to such sites abroad as they are beautifully illuminated. Architectural lights
Basically, the façade lighting is a simple arrangement to light up the historical buildings in which lights are directed at the surfaces to be highlighted. However, architectural lighting also known as element illumination is programming based technique in which beams of light are cast on components such as domes, ramparts, minarets, arches, and balconies, from different angles to highlight their architectural details. “More importantly, under architectural lightings plan, lamps are not fixed on the surface of the structure but are kept or placed at strategic points. This does not damage the building. For architectural illumination, energy-efficient LED lamps are used, which reduce power consumption significantly,” said a senior official of ASI, which is the national custodian and watchdog of heritage monuments in India. The attributes of three more structures namely; Alai Darwaza, Alai Minar, and Quwwatul Islam mosque will also be highlighted by the installation of LED lights
under the new lighting project. “However, we will not allow tourists to go near or enter other structures to be illuminated as part of the plan. It may take three-four months to complete the project,” said the official, who is familiar with the matter. “Elements illumination will enhance the Minar’s aesthetics by exposing beautifully inscribed calligraphy and other decorative features such as corbels, flanges, and balconies. People travelling towards Mehrauli will also be able to appreciate the monument from a distance,” said an official of the NBCC. According to Usha Sharma, director general, ASI, the light replacement project is part of ASI’s ongoing restoration and preservation of city’s monuments for which 140 crores have already been allocated. “Safdarjung’s tomb will be next after Qutub Minar. The ASI will also take up illumination of several protected sites and historic structures across the country, including Man Mahal (Banaras), Aga Khan Palace (Pune), and Metcalf Hall (Kolkata),” she said.

The ASI has collaborated with the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) to implement the replacement of lights, for which the design is being prepared. Qutub Minar, the iconic monument will become the second world heritage site in the national Capital to have state-of-the-art illumination after Red Fort in the coming months.
at Qutub Minar will enhance its aesthetic and will attract more tourists. Next in line is Safdarjung Tomb,” said Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister for Culture.

SPG Headquarters Geneva Gets Refurbished with ERCO LED Lighting Tools
for the new glass facade of the SPG headquarters. The light effect and the interplay of the facade luminaires with the printed glass fins were tested on-site using a model with a size of several metres. Around 290 LED facade luminaires were installed on three levels within the facade that covers eight floors. The luminaires are concealed from the view. They are mounted in the gap between the glass fins with a width of only 45mm in some places. The reason: “Only the light effect, not the luminaires, should be visible to the observers,” explained Simon Simos. The possibility of miniaturization was exploited to its fullest only because of the LED technology when designing the lighting tools.
LED WORLD AUG-SEP ‘18
The headquarters of the Swiss property company SPG in Geneva underwent renovation and got a new “second skin” of light and vertical offset glass fins. The building has been installed with specially developed ERCO LED facade luminaires. The glass shell along with the newly installed lighting on the structure renders it a unique and magnificent look in the night. Basically, ERCO individual is a project-specific product solution for an extremely unusual glass façade
To highlight the one-of-a-kind effect of the facade at night (the project’s lighting designer Simon Simos called it “the nocturnal signature of the building”). The lighting designers and architects worked hand-in-hand from the starting of the project. ERCO, as a partner in the area of LED lighting tools for sophisticated architecture, was hired during the early design phase of the building. The ERCO’s lighting engineers created inventive custom outdoor luminaires
The lighting company, ERCO also supplied two variants of a high lumen-output and extremely narrow outdoor luminaire with a milled aluminium housing and IP 67 protection. Based on a catalogue product, variants with lengths of both 20cm and 30cm were developed with six or nine LEDs configured in series. These two variants correspond to the dimensions of the glass fins that vary in terms of depth, height and intermediate spacing. The housing colour of the luminaires was also modified to match the silver-anodised fixing brackets of the fins.

various applications, and according to Thorn, Altis LED floodlights are highly controllable and can deliver dynamic lighting displays. Moreover, Thorn says that Altis LED’s lightweight, compact design lowers down the structural costs for the luminaire. The entrance and common areas feature 569 of Zumtobel’s PERLUCE ceiling luminaires. Zumtobel claims that CRAFT high bay LED luminaires use one-of-a-kind thermal management, and the design supports an extended service life. According to reports, the company created the inner workings and appearance of the Craft high bays from scratch to maximize efficiency. The lighting system for the entire arena is digitally controlled using a total of 15,000 digital addresses, coinciding with the number of spectators the arena can accomodate.
Be Light, a local lighting design firm chose the product range from Thorn and Zumtobel to light up the swimming area. The Danube

LG has launched Visible Disinfection Lighting, a functional LED light which uses the indoor light to deliver the effect of sterilization same as the sunlight. According to reports, the company has claimed that its 405 nanometre visible LED is able to sterilize indoor spaces by wiping out 99.9 percent of bacteria without using other chemicals when the light is switched on. Different sterilization modes can be set according to the contamination level. Bacteria become extinct when exposed to sunlight for a long time due to a material called ‘porphyrin’ inside of bacteria that destroys its cells by reacting with certain wavelengths of sunlight. The company’s solution maximizes the use of a 405-nm wavelength, which porphyrin reacts to. The product is not harmful for the human body; its sterilization feature can be used without any tension in places where people pass by or work such as restrooms or kitchen. The visible lighting is successfully tested from the Photobiological Safety Standard (IEC62471) of International Electrotechnical Commission, an international standard for electrical technology that it does not have any negative effects on the eyes and skin.
