Achievements

To whom it may concern, My name is Kamila Notario-Galaj and I am a half Spanish, half Polish 26-year-old multi-passionate designer, artist and photographer. After a lot of braindead jobs and experiences, I have found my path studying photography at the Manchester Metropolitan University. When I was 8, my baby sister and I went to social care in Poland because our mother was not able to take care of us. One year later we were adopted by a Spanish couple who was only interested in my sister. At the age of 18, they kicked me out of their home

without any money and I had to find a job and relinquish my dream to go to University. Despite the economic crisis and unemployment in Spain, I was able to find one job after another and throughout these years I had a variety of roles as a bakery assistant, kitchen assistant, au-pair in Hamburg, sales, freelance web designer and retail. I also worked as a CEO assistant for two years and for an insurance company for another two. I also launched an online page where I sold online courses I have created, on how to develop organisational skills, and volunteered in a scout group.

Over the years, I have self-trained in Photoshop, Community Management and web design with WordPress. Last year, complementary to my university degree, I also did a Lightroom course and another one about photo books design. Seeking to rise above my circumstances, and after depression, I completed a Grado De Formacion Profesional in Business (corresponding to level 3 BTEC) whilst working. I really enjoyed the course and managed to excel at it, attaining top marks equating to an A*. Last year, after the quarantine, I decided to move to the United Kingdom. I entered University, got a temporary job in a warehouse and found

a home. Right now, I am studying photography at the Manchester Metropolitan University and I am enjoying it; I am getting good grades. I am looking for a job to collate with it and gain experience in something I love. I am a really resilient and driven person and I was able to go through my circumstances and always be the best me. I am also hardworking, creative, strong, clever, honest, very very organised, efficient and positive. Hope to hear soon from you, Kamila Notario-Galaj

In the book “Mind What You Wear The Psychology of Fashion’’ Professor Karen J. Pine (2014: loc260) discusses both how research has shown “a possible link between depressive mood and clothing” and that there is a link “between depression and unkempt clothing”. This is what I was most interested in reflecting in my work, how appearance can change and be affected by feelings. My style was influenced by the Twitter/Tumblr aesthetic, as most Couch Potatoes during the quarantine were teenagers or young adults for whom the main activity outside of studying or work was meeting up with friends and browsing the internet, only the latter of which is possible during a quarantine. Moreover, this aesthetic was good for the project as it is home to many edgy concepts, allowing me to freely contrast both the cute look of laziness, taking a day off in oversized clothing, with the potential negative impacts.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “Couch Potato” as “a lazy and inactive person, especially: one who spends a great deal of time watching television” (Merriam-Webster: online). I aimed to explore the concept of laziness during a quarantine, with how our fashion choices both affect and reflect our mood and mental health. This is inspired primarily by my friend’s behaviour during the start of the quarantine, unable to leave the house (as Spain had much more strict quarantine rules than the UK, with exercising outside being banned, even for children!) a lot of people I know became a “Couch Potato” for a period of time. Furthermore, I have struggled with mental health issues in the past, making me very curious about how my own mental health may have affected or been affected by being a “Couch Potato”.

Are you truly a

couch potato?

Thank you for having come this far. The idea of the magazine was taken from the Instagram account by Ana Jiménez (@artvellana). The “My Stuff” page is based in a section from the magazine “Vanity Fair”. The Batman and coffee icons are from stock, Estopa’s picture is by the music group, but I hope they do not get mad with me for using it The icons from Education page are from stock too. The rest of pictures are mine. This magazine was made using Indesign. No photographers were harmed in the making of this magazine.
