a message from the

DIRECTOR Dear Arwachinians Greetings to all!

Don’t dream to become big, but dream to do something big. Then you would be the happiest person in this world.

-Shri Narendra Modi

My heart fills with pride and pleasure as I perceive the progress being made at Arwachin International School. The seeds of an idea sown in 2003, has taken firm roots and the school is growing into a strong sapling. It is the endeavour of all of us to make the academic life, a smooth journey full of joy and discovery. Aristotle once said that “Educating a mind without educating a heart is no education at all”. Even as we impart education to match the advancement in technology and globalization, we march our children ahead with our school’s ethos of moral values and principles. We endeavour constantly to instil these qualities in our children. We pride ourselves to help them grow and develop into sensitive, sensible and responsible citizens of tomorrow. The world also needs people who are courageous and compassionate. We need people who extend their hands to help others and stand up for the rights of all mankind which is only possible through self-control and self- discipline. The commitment to become “Moral and Intellectual Leaders, People of Dignity, Integrity and Compassion who want to make a positive difference in the world” must remain in our hearts and souls throughout our lives. Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of fire that must lead on from darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge! And therefore, we have to give our best year after year. Individually and collectively, let’s work to serve the cause of education, for the betterment of our future generation so that we live in a world “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high….” I extend my warm wishes to all Arwachinians, to continue this journey on the road to excellence. May the sapling grow into a sturdy tree and spread its branches! ARUN SHARMA DIRECTOR

PRINCIPAL’S DESK Education is a blend of vision and skill. Skill devoid of vision would be purposeless and vision without skill would achieve nothing. In today’s age, that is dominated by knowledge and technology, the challenge before the education system is to create skilled human resources that can take advantage of new opportunities and face new challenges. Skilled visionaries, is the need of the time. At Arwachin International school, students have exposure beyond books and academics. The competitions, work culture and the activities throughout the year - are all a part of the holistic education that enables students to grow into confident and poised, young adults who are equipped and ready to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and demanding world. Ample opportunities are created for students to become , thinking and independent individuals who are sensitive to diversity, aware of their heritage and able to face the challenges of their lifetime. Our campus pulsates with the vibrant energy of co-curricular activities which encourages sharing, bonding assuming responsibility and respecting one another and thus finding happiness. Through the curriculum, students are exposed to a number of interesting topics, challenging assignments and research work .The teachers focus on helping students to think creatively and to reason analytically encouraging them to experiment, to synthesize and to draw conclusions. The year 2013-14 has seen an array of activities and achievements each trying to supersede the other. The school magazine, ‘IMPACT’ is a humble attempt to give direction and expression to the creative thinking, ideas and emotions of our students . The AIS team- each and every individual deserves a roaring applause for doing their bit and their best. Mrs Gracy Peter

ENGLISH ESSAYS My favourite festival -Tiasha Roy (Class I A-1) My favourite festival is Diwali. On this day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshman after an exile of fourteen years. Diwali is a festival of enjoyment and merry making. It is called the festival of lights. People decorate their houses and shops with candles and lights. The whole area looks like a fairy land. On this day I decorate my house with candles, lights and lamps. I light fire crackers with my family. We worship Goddess lakshmi. I love this festival very much.

A Birthday That I Shall Never Forget Anshika Sharma (Class IIA) I celebrate my birthday every year on 18th September but I can’t forget my fifth birthday because that day my father threw a big party for me. One of my good friends, Naina, brought a few English and Math books for me. Those books were very useful for me as English and Math are my favourite subjects. I wore a pink dress and I was looking like a fairy. The best part was the strawberry cake, which my mother prepared specially for my birthday. Firstly, I cut the cake and gave it to everyone. Everyone said that the cake was very tasty. There was a beautiful garden. My friends and I played in that garden. There were some swings also. We all enjoyed ourselves a lot there. We were feeling very hungry so we had our dinner. It was very delicious. After that my father told me that he had invited a magician. A Journey By Train Harshit Jain (Class III) A journey by train is always a wonderful experience. I have travelled many times by train but this was a memorable one. I went to Chandigarh by train during my summer vacations. I went there with my mother and two sisters. Our father dropped us at the New Delhi railway station. Our tickets had already been booked. So, we eagerly entered the railway station. We saw many people lounging on the benches. They were wearing different kinds of clothes. There were tea stalls and book shops which attracted the passengers. After fifteen minutes at 7:30 a.m., the train arrived at the platform. Along with the other passengers, we boarded the train with our luggage. Luckily, I got a seat near the window. The guard blew the whistle and the train started at 7:45 a.m. Many people were busy talking and reading novels. After some time the ticket checker came to check the tickets. Later on, I took out a story book from my bag and started reading it. It was a very interesting story. I finished reading it. After that I had a cup of hot milk. We reached Chandigarh railway station at about eleven in the morning. We got down from the train and were happy to meet our relatives who had come to receive us. It was a very nice journey which I enjoyed immensely. I will never forget this journey.

My School Picnic M Gauri (Class IV) I went on my School Picnic to Drizzling Land. It is in Ghaziabad. When I went for the first ride, I felt like throwing up. I sat down on a chair for some time and went to another corner of the park where there were many other slides that we usually see in the normal parks. At one corner there was a mini zoo where small animals and birds like monkey, deer, rabbit, hen, duck, parrot, pigeons etc. were moving freely. I called my friends and showed them the mini zoo and they were so happy. Our Class teacher called us for the group photograph with our class teacher, classmates and Mrs. Rao. After the photo session, we sat down on the grass and ate our lunch. My friend, Shivangi, had brought storybooks and colouring books. I read one of the stories. While moving around we saw a stage where a dance competition was going on and it was open to all. The interested students and teachers gave their names. I didn’t give my name because I was busy playing. The winners got the prizes. Ananshika, Tanisha, Ishika Kapoor and Shourya Kaushik of our class got the prizes. They got a pen and a chocolate. I was very happy for them. Then I went to a ride named Water Merry-go-round. It was such good fun. Aanya and I ate ice-cream. We played Hoola hoop also. We ate homemade burger and Choco-pie that Keyur had brought from her home. Now it was time to go back to the school. When we returned to our school, it was 5.30 p.m. Our parents arrived at 6 p.m. We had to wait there for thirty minutes. And by 6.10 p.m., my mother arrived and I said good bye to everyone and went back home. It was a great day filled with fun and excitement. I can never forget this day in my life.

English Essay Writing Competition Books as our friends Shruti Kishore (Class 5-D) Books are the most reliable friends. They are our friends, philosophers and guide. Our friends are there with us in happiness but what about the sadness. They just disappear in the sad moments of our life but books are always there with us. They uplift the poor and give them a better life. They help the downtrodden forget his degradation, the burden bearer forgets his burden and the sick forgets his sufferings. We should be very judicious in the choice of books. They give us a lot of knowledge on any subject. Our lives are greatly enriched by reading books. They bring light into darkness and sunshine into shadow. The good books sharpen our intellect, broaden our minds, enrich our experiences, widen our knowledge, uplift our morals, making us better, nobler and happier in our lives. Some books are the life of the nation. Books like Gita and Mahabharata inspire us. They teach us good lessons and morals. These are the books that people must read because they teach us how to live a better life. They teach us the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Such books are very knowledgeable. Books such as Ramayana and Mahabharata teach us the victory of good over evil. This means the truth and goodness always win . Gandhiji said that Gita was his mother because his mother was not there in this world and whatever he had done was because of the knowledge he got from Gita. He said that the problems he had in his life were all solved by reading the Gita. So, the Gita was his mother. Books also enrich our vocabulary and when we read these books, we come across various new words and they are very useful to us. If we have problems in our life, the possible ways to solve these problems are talking to experts and reading books. Talking to experts is not possible sometimes. So, the only possible way is to read books. They give us solution to solve problems. It is better to read books than facing problems from each direction due to lack of knowledge. So, books are our best friends. They give us knowledge and transform illiterates into literates. Books are our really unsurpassed friends. They teach us everything we have not been taught. From a young age children are taught to read books to improve their knowledge. They are our best friends. They are our best companions in solitude. They are a treasure house of noble thoughts which are open to us day and night.

Books : Our Best Friend Manu Rai (Class 5A) Books, also known as ‘The Knowledge Store’ play a very important role in our life. For the children of my age, books are as precious as a treasure and it will be very difficult to gain all the information from the books if we don’t read them regularly. Some people also say that ‘Grab as much knowledge as you can’. Books give us life-long happiness. We should consider our books as our best friends because when we are wrong, they guide us towards the right. When we want to entertain ourselves, we can read a story .Some children don’t understand the importance of reading books. They consider books boring because they don’t know how to read and enjoy them. Actually, we are very selfish as we use them only when they are needed. A child, who understands the importance of books, will surely succeed. There is another saying that “Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently”. It tells us that winners are not born with prior knowledge; they work hard and then are able to achieve their goals. They are the ones who utilize their time in reading books and gaining knowledge. Books can change a person’s life. We can take the example of Abraham Lincoln, who belonged to a poor family and lived in a small cottage, but his hard work and the love for books brought prosperity to his life. We should create interest if we want to achieve something because if we do something without interest, the result is zero. We are blessed that we have the opportunity to read books and to get good education but the poor children don’t have a single penny to enjoy all these facilities. They keep their dreams to themselves and they see others enjoying their luxurious life. We don’t even think about this and avoid reading books. Our parents want us to study as they know the benefits of reading books and they want us to live our life comfortably. So, lets take a pledge today to read books with interest and make them our best friends because they are our real companions.

The 3 day trek at the KSC acquainted the Arwachinians with the entire working system of the KSC. Among the highlights of the tour were a visit to the Astronaut Hall of Fame, Apollo/Saturn V Center, Rocket Garden, Early Space exploration, the launch pads 39-A and 39-B and the vehicle assembly building. The people at NASA ensured that the students might not just return with visual memories, but also take away with them some new knowledge. The visit was organized by HT Pace, in collaboration with our school, which aimed at acquainting the students with newspaper printing technologies and techniques and processes. They were very excited after seeing the first section. It left them awed , all the more urging them to discover the place and the functioning of the machines. The way the blank paper was printed within milliseconds and the way the machines compiled them automatically was worth appreciating. One of the supervisors very kindly hailed us and guided us around. He enlightened us on how the machines worked, which colors they used, how each sheaf was counted and so on . The visit inspired us to appreciate the biggest and the most beautiful gift mankind can ever have- the intelligence to create machines and use them for their intellectual growth.

The DCPCR guidelines that were discussed at length in the meet included proper guidelines that the schools should follow regarding transport facilities, picnic and trips, online safety and also to establish a feedback system. The meet was also designed to help schools understand their legal responsibilities to report suspected child abuse and neglect and to assist them in understanding the child protective services for the initial assessment process in a better way. Keeping the above said issues in mind, the Government of NCT of Delhi has also made legal provisions like Delhi Juvenile Justice Rules, 2009 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), Act, 2012 to support the guidelines. Arwachin International School Exhorts Voters to Vote 30th November, 2013

On a bright sunny morning the sanguine students of Arwachin Internaitonal School took to the streets of Dilshad Garden to call upon the residents of  the locality to go out in hordes and vote on 4th December for the state assembly election. The students enacted street plays at various spots in Dilshad Garden. The play emulated the methodology of  “Nukkad Natak” and scripted the callous behaviour of politicians who hibernate   through their term and awake only during elections. An NGO was seen rousing people against such selfish leaders. People were encouraged to realize their rights and duties as citizens of India. Earlier in the day the Arwachinians trooped out of the campus of their Alma Mater donning their  school uniforms and were carrying flags, posters, placards with messages  on the need to go out and vote. They were chanting slogans on the need to vote and exercise the right to decide who would lead the state of Delhi. Penned in Hindi the slogans roused quite an interest among pedestrians and the residents who flocked to hear and see what was happening. Many of the passers-by joined the slogan chanting which encouraged the students immensely.  The procession paused at many a point in Dilshad Garden. When it reached I pocket, the students were in for a pleasant surprise. The President of  RWA, I Pocket, Mr. D C Garg, not only  appreciated and lauded  the efforts of the students but also came forward and delivered a speech exhorting others to step forth and do what the children were encouraging everybody to do. The appreciative smile and the claps from the people thronging to the spot showed the success of this noble campaign.

Then,  Mrs. Gracy Peter, our Principal, declared the Sports Meet open after  which the students of all the four houses- Bose, Tilak, Shastri and Tagore, led by the School and House Captains, marched smartly round the  field. The themes of traditional karate training are fighting and self  defence.Arwachinians  clapped for the well-executed Karate strokes performed by the Karatekas. The girl students  of classes 8 and 9 performed aerobics on the song “Sadda dil bhi tu”. This particular event was a  harmonious blend of aerobics, songs and yogic postures which depicted the postures of Lord Ganesha.  The students of Class XI  engaged, in a friendly volley-ball match,   the staff of the school that included our Physical Education teachers. Finally the races commenced as students ran 100m, 200m, 400m,  800m and 1200m. The determination, dedication and self-confidence  of the students were worth appreciating. But what thrilled the Arwachinians the most were the races organized  especially for the teachers. The day ended with the awards being given away  to all the hardworking winners. Tilak House bagged the “The Best March Past” award. The best athletes were Ashu Garg Class X B and Garima Aggarwal of Class XI in the boys and girls categories respectively. The best House of the Annual Sports Meet was once again Bose House, the House which has claimed  the  trophy for now more than five years now. This honour is worth appreciating  and worth talking about. The day ended with the singing of the National Anthem.

Staff Picnic 2014 On 1st February, 2014, the Directors, the Principal and the entire staff of A I S took time out for an excursion to the annual craft fair at Surajkund, a sleepy suburb of Faridabad, famous for its historical pond( now dry). After a waking cup of tea and nourishing refreshment we set out for the fair with songs on our lips and a spring in our steps. The journey hardly seemed to have taken any time and we were there to see it all and enjoy it all. Even before entering the fair ground, the teachers and other staff members got themselves photographed in order to carry back memories. Much to the surprise of everyone, a lot had changed in the way the fair was managed this time. There were many more stalls and vending points than we had witnessed on our previous visit to the place. The Rajasthan cuisine at once became everyone’s favourite haunt. With their ethnic snacks and sweets the stall owners had visitors flocking to their stalls.

Arwachin International School Celebrates Its Annual Day 28th March, 2014 On 28th March, 2014 Arwachin international school celebrated its annual day on the theme “Let’s Build a Better World with Hope” .Great pride, enthusiasm and zeal in every student and every teacher made the occasion very special though the weather was inclement . The evening commenced with the welcome song and lighting of the lamp. This year, our chief guest was Mrs. Madhu Pant, an ex-director at National Bal Bhavan. First the students sought the blessings of Lord Ganesh by dancing to the beats of the song “Deva Shri Ganesha”. This year Arwachinians took the initiative to do something innovative, informative inspiring and motivational. Through a judicious mix of PPTs, Plays on social evils, sonorous songs and enthralling dances The Arwachinians sought to acquaint their spectators with the problems being faced by mother earth and humanity today. They then went on to give a message of hope to the spectators. The students brought the social malaise as well as problems faced by Nature due to human greed into focus through a PowerPoint presentation and a mime, which stole away the hearts of the spectators. Added to this were the scary facts stated by Mr. Alexander Francis, which left a prolonged effect in the hearts of the parents. The students presented the vigorous dance of “Tandav” which Lord Shiva is said to perform to rebalance energies in the cosmos every time evil becomes dominant in this world. The first social issue brought into the light was “Child Labour”, through a play and a French song. The play depicted the hard lives of the children who lose their childhood after falling victim to human malpractices at tender ages. Next was the play “Respect for Elders”. It portrayed the plight of the aged after they have been discerned by their own children. Growing old is the eternal law of universe and no can escape it. Then why do the old people have to be forsaken by their own families? But here, the overall development of an Arwachinian is a beautiful amalgam of social values and the Indian ethos. The Arwachinians have always been taught to respect their elders . And through the Japanese song the students showed their love and respect for their parents. Next in line was the play titled “Risky Whisky”, highlighting the fact that alcohol is a waste of time as it destroys one’s memory, self respect and self esteem. But its never too late to change .Music and dance speak what cannot be expressed; they soothe the mind and give it rest and heal one’s wound. Keeping this fact in mind, the Arwachinians sang a beautiful song “Remedy”. The last play revolved around the injustice, pain and suffering faced by women and also the power of women to raise her voice against the injustice . The Hindi songs following the play reminded every woman present that evening that she was the lifeline of the world and within her the entire universe exists. The finale dance was the crust of the programme, spreading just one message “Always look up to the future with the sparkle

of hope and never give up!” The parents were next acquainted with the national and international achievements of the school. The school created history when twenty four of its students participated in the school National Netball Tournament. Keeping their hard work and dedication to succeed in mind, the Director gave away track-suits to every player. The next big achievement of the school was the school winning the first runner-up position at the prestigious International Children’s Festival of performing Arts Ballet /Dance Drama Competition. The Arwachinians students had to jostle with participants from 22 countries. The evening concluded with a very inspiring speech delivered by the Chief Guest Mrs Madhu Pant who gave the message that if we want to see light all around then we have to kindle the flame of love, hope and wisdom in our own heart put there by the Creator. This message happily coincided with the message the Arwachinians sought to give to their parents and the world. The evening drew to a close with brief message from the Directors Mr. Arun Sharma and Mrs. Sandra Swarup . The Principal Mrs. Gracy Peter thanked and congratulated the students and the teachers profusely. Report filed by Mr. A. Francis

English Essays A Lonely Evening At Home It was a winter day. The weather was chilly and visibility was poor due to fog or smog. My father was on an official tour and was scheduled to return back in the evening. In the afternoon, my mother got a phone call and it was sad to hear that one of her friends had met with an accident and was admitted in the City hospital. She was puzzled and could not decide what to do. She wanted to move to see her friend in the hospital but she was not ready to leave me alone. In fact, I had never stayed alone. Mom called up my father but his mobile was switched off, perhaps he was onboard, flying from Chennai to Delhi. It was about 4:45 in the afternoon. Mom decided to go to the hospital. I did not agree to stay alone but it was also hard for me to accompany my mother as I had to revise for the next day’s paper. Secondly, my parents never prefer to take kids to the hospital unnecessarily. Ultimately, I was convinced but bargained that after finishing my task, I would watch cartoon channel on the television. Although my TV watching is restricted for cartoon in particular, my mother agreed and repeatedly reminded me what to do and what not to. There was a standing instruction – I should not open the gate at any cost unless my father or mother comes. Mom left around at 4:45 p.m. For the first five-ten minutes, I was trying to settle down. Things passed too rapidly. Suddenly I started feeling that I had grown up enough and should be trusted to take responsibilities. I was glad in one way as I was permitted to watch cartoon but the silence encompassing the house was also haunting me. I went to my study table but could not concentrate. I went to the kitchen, took water in a glass and kept it in microwave to warm it. The noise of microwave was breaking the silence. For the first time, I was enjoying the noise created by the machine. I returned to my study room after taking water. I opened the books and started preparing for my exam. It was very difficult to concentrate as my ears had become too sensitive to catch any sound in and around and my vision was roaming to see every corner of my room. It was a very hard task for me to prepare for the exam. Perhaps it was the longest period in my life I had spent without uttering a single word. To break the silence, I started studying loudly, which I never do. My parents always suggest me doing so and their logic is if you study loudly, the unwanted sounds around will not disturb you. To overcome my fear, I was studying loudly. My mother called me up at about 6:30 p.m. I told her that I was fine. She informed that my father would land at about 7:30, go to the hospital directly from the airport and finally they would return together. Every moment I was feeling unfortunate as I have no siblings. My study was almost over. Now I planned to watch TV. I switched on all the lights, put the television on, and that too at a very loud voice. I started watching Tom and Jerry. It was a wonderful story. I did not even come to know when it was eight. I got up and switched off the TV. Suddenly I became tensed as suddenly I remembered that I had some more homework and a project to complete. I planned to take my dinner first and then do my study. As it grew darker, my fear also started growing. The sound created by my own slippers while moving towards the washbasin to wash my hands even started haunting me. I preferred to move barefoot. As I started taking my dinner, I heard a rhythmic sound all around. I was nervous but made myself steady. I started recalling my father’s advice, “Whenever you are afraid, try

INDEX

to locate and identify the cause of fear”. As my grandmother advised me to recall and chant ‘Gayatri Mantra’ whenever I am in fear, I started chanting it loudly. Finally, I could manage to identify the cause and I found that the tap was not properly closed and the water was tickling out making such a noise. I returned to finish my dinner. Mom called me up again and told that it would take another 40-45 minutes to reach home. Then I decided to sit in the bedroom to finish my project and watch television simultaneously. Everything was fine. Suddenly I saw a black shadow on the glass window. I was really stunt and again started chanting ‘Gayatri’ mantra. I stood up slowly, went to the door and opened the wooden door at the balcony side. I had no courage to open the outer gate and go to balcony but I could see a man standing there. I closed the door immediately. I do not know what thought made me feel so horrible. After few seconds, I settled myself and went to the door again. I tried to peep through the door. Finding nothing wrong, I opened the door and went to the balcony. No one was there. Within fraction of seconds, the man had vanished! I was puzzled, trying to investigate how a man could reach our balcony. All the doors were closed, so it is impossible for a person to be there. I took a deep breath and returned to my room, and tried to convince myself that it was an illusion. As I was about to settle down, I heard the call bell. I thought my parents have returned. I rushed and opened the door. Oh my God! It was the same man again. My heartbeat grew louder. I could not see him in the balcony. He was about six and a half feet tall, wearing a long coat and a hat. He was carrying a stick in his hand. His face was rather fearful with a long beard. His eyes were glowing in the dark and his body was full of dirt. It seemed that he had not taken a bath for almost months. After accumulating sufficient courage, I asked him, “Who are you?” He replied in a rather shaking voice, “English Exam”. He vanished again instantly. What a terrific experience! The next day was my English exam and I was not fully prepared for it. I went in and saw the time. It was 9 p.m. All these incidents happened in just half an hour. I had another one hour to prepare myself. I went quickly and got prepared for my examination. I smelled some fragrance, perhaps the burning of incense sticks. Suddenly I heard the trumpet of Conch shell (Shankhnaad), I opened my eyes and saw my mother performing her evening prayer. It was 6 o’clock in the evening. For a moment, I was trying to correlate everything and ultimately understood that it was a dream. My parents had gone out in the afternoon. Returning from school that day, I was feeling very tired and fell asleep with my English Literature book. I was little bit worried about my English preparation this time as I could not perform well last time. I got up, refreshed myself and straightway went to my study table. I started preparing for my exam. When I realized that it was a dream, I was indecisive whether I should share it with my mother. Ultimately, I decided to prepare and do well in the exam and then share it. I did well next day. This is one of the dreams I remember now and will be remembered forever, especially whenever I am left alone at home. May be God has shown me this dream to remind me about my English exam or may be just to scare me a little! The agnostic people may explain it as a result of my anxiety prevailing in sub-conscious mind regarding my English exam. -Shohini Pathak VI-D

The Young Generation Is Blindly Aping The West India is the centre of culture and heritage, a place nurturing future citizens, the cradle of ancient civilization and above all a place known for its values and traditions .It is a diverse nation. A glimpse of culture and diversity can be seen in each town and city of India. Unity runs in the veins of the country. Despite of having a memorable past, a wonderful present and a bright future…… India is not given any importance by its young generation .The young generation is busy blindly aping the west. As a result, the Indians who were first known as “inventors” have now emerged as “brainless copy cats”. We, Indians, once believed in folding our hands to greet our teachers, elders and guests. It was not just a gesture for us but also a symbol to show immense respect and honour. But today’s young generation just put their hand forward and say “hello”. Earlier, we used to wear our traditional dresses so as to show our culture and above all for personal satisfaction.Women wore saris whereas men wore kurta-pyjamas but now wearing traditional dresses is only limited to a few festivals. Wearing saris is considered nothing more than a problem and burden by the Gen Y. Perhaps, the young generation has forgotten that it is only a sari and kurta-pyjama which reflect the identity of an Indian which a skirt, shirt or jeans never can. In the past, mothers used to spend hours in the kitchen cooking food. If the people got some curd or salad with their food, it was considered a luxury .Today’s young generation do not even like to take a morsel of chapatti but enjoy foreign delicacies like burger, french-fries etc. All thanks to the western culture that the gen Y can eat unhealthy and bad food from outside but will not eat nicely prepared home-made food. The Indians are becoming copy-cats day by day but even copying requires a brain. We have also copied many of the good things from the west .We have made many of the inventions like the bulb, radio and refrigerator, invented in the west, a part of our daily lives . Life seems impossible without these appliances .English, the most widely used language is being learned by the Indian students .We have adopted many foreign delicacies as a very special part of our diet. The gen Y is constantly learning new techniques from the west. Change is the law of nature. Progress is not possible without it. We must also change with time but in the right direction. The gen Y should understand that blindly aping the west can lead to hazardous consequences. Like a strainer is used to separate the unwanted tea leaves from tea similarly the young generation should also use their minds to adopt the good things from the west in their lifestyle and ignore the bad. Progressing and changing with time is fine but we must never disrespect our culture and values .We must never consider sari or any Indian dress inferior. Hindi speakers should also be given full respect and honour. They must not be looked upon as uneducated. It is a genuine fact that the Indians have also adopted many good, useful and innovative things

INDEX

from the western civilization…….but unfortunately the bad things have outnumbered the good ones .At the end, I only want to say that copying good things from the west or east or from anywhere is not bad at all but we must never compromise on our Indian traditions and values because a tree which has been separated from its roots does not stay alive for too long. – Preeti Thapliyal VII-C

A Narrow Escape Life is a journey. It makes its way through many changes, good or bad. Sometimes we even don’t realize what has happened or is going to come. Sometimes it may be a bowl of cherries, other times it may be a dog’s life. Life is not the same always. We also have narrow escapes from any kind of bad coming to us that we even don’t understand whether it was the Almighty God who saved us or our luck that helped us to overcome the problem. It happens always in our life, but there are some who realize it while others do not. Now I’m going to narrate my narrow escape. A house in Ghaziabad in which there was a lot of hustle – bustle, a house which had suddenly sprung to life. This noisy house was mine. It was a December evening. My grand-parents along with my aunt had just arrived. They were resting a bit as they had to go on a long journey. Everyone at my home had a 40 – watt smile on their faces as they were all happy and excited as we all were going to Vaishno Devi ,the temple of the great goddess Durga. Amongst all of us, there was one member of the family who was tensed, that was my mother, the lady of the house. She was tensed because a lot had to be done, and the hands of the clock seemed to run fast for her, she was roaming here and there telling everyone their jobs but the thing that was troubling her most was that my father had not yet arrived and the time was running fast. There were just two hours for the train to leave. My father was busy at confirming the tickets as the thing was that our tickets were still not confirmed. My sister and I were deciding what to take and what not to take and my mother was scolding us for wasting the time and not helping her. Suddenly there was a knock on the door, I ran quickly to the door and opened it, my father was at the door, his face showed the lines of stress. My mother came from the room asking who was at the door, and when she saw my father with his upset face, she asked him the reason for it and then he told her that the tickets were not yet confirmed. My parents were confused if they should go or not. My father gave her a shrug and told her that he was still thinking, my mother advised us to go. But, my father disagreed with my mother. After giving it a little thought, he said that it would be difficult to take my old grand- parents to the station and return if the tickets would not get confirmed. But, my mother told him if we go there it would be better, because if the tickets get confirmed then we can carry on our journey or else we can come back and if we decide not to go and the tickets get confirmed then we would regret. My father said that he needed some time. After eating his lunch, he got up from his table, wiping his hand and said that we would go. When his decision was conveyed to my grand – parents they got scared. But my mother consoled them by saying that “where there is a will there is a way.” We all got ready and took a taxi from the gate which we had booked a week ago. We reached the railway station. My father asked us to wait there and warned us not to go anywhere else. He went to check for the confirmation of our tickets. He came back after ten minutes and with a low voice,

INDEX

142

he told us that the tickets were not confirmed. Everyone was excited and had planned for this journey for the past one month. Everyone was waiting to go there to get that divine blessing. So we sat in the taxi and in half an hour, we were back home. We were all upset but my mother told them that maybe it was not our turn to visit the holy shrine. She asked us not to lose hope and told us we’ll go some other time. That tiring day passed and the next day was Sunday and we all woke up with frowning faces although our mother prepared a delicious breakfast for all of us. After eating our meal, we were feeling much better and then around ten we all took seats for watching TV. My father asked me to change to the news channel from those boring serials. I was surfing the news channels to find some interesting news, my father hurriedly asked me to change to the previous channel so I did as I was told. There was breaking news of the train’s bogies getting separated from the train and my father looked at the television with an open mouth. He told us that that was the train by which they had to travel and the boogies had caught fire and we all joined our father in his expression and we all had tears in our eyes as we had been saved from such as big mishappening. We didn’t understand whom to thank, God, luck or the railway department. We all thanked our luck and God. Next morning we went to the temple and distributed clothes and sweets to everyone. This was a narrow escape, we would have met the same fate but we thank God for keeping us safe. So, there are some instances when we are saved, we were sad for not going there, but then we had no complaints. When we went to the temple we not only thanked God, but we also prayed for all those who travelled in that train. We must enjoy each and every moment of our life that is given to us because we don’t know what may come next as said by Yugoslav,” Life is like a game in which good shuffles the card, devil deals them and we have to play the trumps.” -Sunidhi, VIII C

Is Globalization Good For India? India is famous for its rich heritage and culture. Well, culture of a place also includes our traditional industries. Since the ancient times, traditional industries and related economic activities have flourished in India and were the life support of the people. But slowly and gradually these industries started vanishing and in the present day are on the verge of extinction. What caused this change? Was this change a sudden one? Is it good for our country? Let us see. The major cause of this change was globalization and yes the change was a gradual one, not a sudden one. Not sticking to the definition here; in broader terms, Globalization simply refers to big industries (of all types) taking over the basic industries in our country. The next question which arises that which type of industries are we talking about? Well, the answer to this question is very simple. We keep reading in the books that in India, the traditional industries flourished but most of us are not aware what kind of industries we are talking about. We actually talk about the traditional industries of cotton and jute, handloom

INDEX

143

industries, the art of making bangles, handicrafts and many more. Now that we know the industries which were affected, let’s see when and how the change was caused. When India was a free nation (i.e. right before the ships of any foreign traders touched our ports), the country was dominated by basic industries and ruled by kings. When the first foreigners, i.e. the Portuguese touched our ports, they didn’t try to change anything around here, rather they appreciated our culture and respected it. Complications arose when the British came. Our land was divided into many kingdoms and hence we failed to recognize our true potential. The British just took the advantage of it and observed that our traditional industries were the foundation of our civilization. This was where they attacked us and brought us tumbling down, crushed our industries and established their dominance over us. The British used their own goods from other places including India. With our industries gone; they started introducing their own goods such as confectionaries, apparels, crafts etc in our country. Some naïve Indians saw this as the development of our nation, but the truth was something else. In my own words: “A developed nation is not one in which the poor have cars, it is one where the rich use public transport” which here means that the roots which are shared by all the people, if cherished will help us develop. Abandoning the old roots and adopting the new ones just doesn’t work. Same was the case with India. People were grateful to the British for globalization but they failed to notice their true intention behind this. Go to a market or a city, all we see is foreign goods (mostly) dominating the markets. No one even looks up to the small industries now left to rot in the villages. I agree that we are at an advantage because of globalization but we just fail to see the other side of the coin to realize how globalization has ruined many rural households which are now vulnerable groups. In the words of Jimmy Carter: “If you’re totally illiterate and living on one dollar a day, the benefits of globalization never come to you.” Well that’s true. The benefits of globalization are only enjoyed by the upper strata of the society. It is not that globalization is all bad. It has its own plus points. Some of them can be that we are now in pace with the world and from our outer shell, we look almost developed. The national income is higher and people are more and more developing. Yes, the nation is growing. If we are to develop new roots, it is essential that we are in contacts with the origin, or we are sure to fall to the ground. Globalization has helped us, no doubt but instead of affecting just the rural households, it has affected the entire nation. The children crave for the flavor of the foreign globalized goods and are not even interested in the food cooked at home. As a result we see failing health and weakness eating the whole nation. With globalization we are able to interact with the entire world taking points out of their culture. But as it is the human nature, we are tempted towards the bad aspects of each culture

INDEX

144

corroding our own culture even further. As a result we also see falling moral values among us. Throughout the world there are many people who are in full support of globalization. In the words of Kofi Annan: “Arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity”. With globalization, we are contributing to the growth of foreign industries. With each foreign goods we buy, we are helping the company’s CEO to buy a new Lamborghini. The smaller industries have nowhere to go and hence are restricted to the villages, or simply the places with stunted growth. As a result; the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Now as we approach the end, we see that both the sides are supporting themselves. But it is up to us to draw a conclusion and put an end to all the confusion generated by the different arguments. We see that globalization has strengthened our new generation although we cannot neglect the fact that how it has managed to decay our roots. Globalization is a necessary evil, with both good and bad aspects, it is essential for our growth. Although some modifications can be made to original idea. One change that can be made is that we can start contributing to the growth of the traditional industries so that it can serve as a viable replacement option, a much better one for the generations to come. If we also encourage the smaller industries, we are assured all- round development and the people who have cried for long can finally smile. Maybe it is just the time for an old touch. “With the looks of the things, what the people might need is a little old fashioned” - The Avengers (Marvels Pvt. Ltd.)

So in conclusion, globalization is good for us but only if it is implemented in the modified form i.e. by strengthening our roots and not dissolving them so that our country is at the top of the world, with its reins in our hands. “I will develop and grow by the support of my ancestors and not by eliminating them; the latter would only make me weaker.” -Pancham Gupta, IX A

Role of Media in Indian Democracy Democracy is not only a form of government but a way of life. It is a system in which the sovereignty lies in the hands of people because it’s the representatives elected by them who rule and run the country. And it is a known fact that media acts as an interface between the common people and the government, giving it a very crucial role to play in the functioning of the democracy. The Indian media has changed phenomenally over the years and has reached out to the masses effectively making its place among the world’s largest media. And what the Indian media has been able to gather with this effective connectivity is the faith of the people. India is a democracy where the majority of the voters are either illiterate or very little read and hence not capable of making a right choice about their leaders and country’s politics all

on their own. Media acts as a guide for them in this case. It broadcasts all good and bad done by various political parties or individual leaders which helps the people shape their opinion. It helps them become aware of their rights and their individual importance in the democracy. Media not only plays its part while formation of a government. It is active even when the government has been formed, they bring all the activity of the government in lime light, be it in the favour of the government or not. People deserve to know everything that happens in the cabinet and its media that can make the two ends meet. It acts like a bridge in the democracy. It informs the people of what happens in the government and also it transfers the needs and demands of the common people to the government hence making the Indian government run the way it does today. To understand the role of media more deeply, one should try to imagine India with no mass and media at all. The picture is chaotic and disoriented. How will the people know any detail about the elections? How will they make the right decision? Where will they get accurate facts about each of the representatives? How will they know if elections too place fairly? How will they get to know the results? How will they know what party has what promises to make? How will the representatives be able to know of the strength of their opponents? How will anything happen at all? This picture won’t just be limited to India, but it is difficult to imagine any democracy without free media. Democracy can’t be twenty people sitting at the centre and ruling and rest of the nation just obeying blindly. A democracy is where every villager gets a say in the political matters. Media facilitates this; it provides a platform to voiceless many to put forth their grievances and needs. Over the years, it has become the responsibility of media alone to serve as the connecting link between the government and the common man. There is no other way but media by which these can interact at all. Then, media is expected to neutrally bring all possible aspects of a government into the attention of the people and make them aware of all the right and wrong happening around. It is only media that people can rely on. And the foremost responsibility is to help people nourish their rights and understand their importance in the democracy. In India, media has acquired an unbeatable and very significant position in the functioning of the democratic government and it won’t be very wrong to say that media is the fourth pillar of the modern democracy. -Nupur Sharma, X A

Role of Media in The Indian Democracy India is the largest democracy in the world and media has a powerful presence in the country. In India, media came into existence in 1780 with the introduction of a newspaper namely “˜The Bengal Gazette” and since then, media has evolved to be the fourth estate of the nation. From creating an informed population to entertaining the masses, media in its different forms has influenced human life in the present century. However, among all the successe, there’s a

cause of concern. Is media really fulfilling its social responsibility? Is a booming global mass media posing threats to the democratic way of thinking? Is it posing challenges to a country like India where media has a greater role to play rather than merely providing information and entertainment? In recent times, the role of media in the Indian democracy has been widely debated. Media has been subject to a lot of criticism for the manner in which it has disregarded its obligation to social responsibility. Dangerous business practices in the field of media have affected the fabric of Indian democracy. Big industrial conglomerates in the business of media have threatened the existence of pluralistic viewpoints. Post liberalisation, transnational media organisations have spread their wings in the Indian market with their own global interests. Today, news is NOT MERELY REPORTED BUT ALSO MANUFACTURED AND SOLD. This has happened at the cost of an Indian media which was initially thought to be an agent of ushering in social change through developmental programs directed at the non privileged and marginalised sections of the society. We are very well aware of the fact- that MEDIA can shape public thoughts. But we forget one thing- that if media has the power to shape public opinion, it also has the POWER TO MANIPULATE IT to serve its own goals. Over the time, media has gained the faith of the people. Values like objectivity and truthfulness in presentation of news and ideas have been totally done away with. MEDIA doesn’t report events, IT SELLS NEWS. Whatmore, media has left no stone unturned to sell the reputation of its nation in the international market. Worldwide, India is called a DIRTY PLACE TO LIVE IN just because TV channels earn TRP on targeting the dirty side of India. Wow!!! look how media is betraying the nation and YET is considered the FOURTH PILLAR of the Indian Democracy. Added to this is the fact that media has put the security of the nation at stake. In January 2014, some Nepalese terrorists invaded the sacred soil of India to kidnap Delhi’s Chief Minister. The media anyway had to dig its fingers into this confidential matter to announce the catch of one of the terrorists. This undue coverage gave the others a chance to fly away in time as they has a complete idea on what the Indian police was upto, through the media. The promotion of hate speech in place of constructive debate and creation of an atmosphere of suspicion rather than social trust has the danger of making people cynic about the democratic setup leading to its breakdown. Excessive coverage or hype of sensitive news has led to communal riots at times. Constant repetition of the news, especially sensational news, breeds apathy and insensitivity. For instance, in Dhananjoy Chatterjee case, the overloaded hype led to death of quite a few children who imitated the hanging procedure which was repeatedly shown in most of the T.V. news channels. There is a plethora of such negative impacts of media. And not to mention the fact that it is because of the media that the polticians are afraid to take any step. It is the fear of being pictured corrupt when the media exaggerates the situation to the worse. It is at this point of time when our government comes to a halt. This is when inflation strikes India and renders the common public helpless, striving to make both ends meet. In Indian democracy, media has a responsibility which is deeply associated with the socio

economic conditions. The present scenario is not quite encouraging and certain areas need to be addressed. Media organisations, whether in print, audio visual, radio or web have to be more accountable to the general public. The freedom of press in the country is a blessing for the people. However, this blessing has gone terribly wrong as manipulations have set in and needs to be rectified!!!!! -Garima Aggarwal, XI-A

Japan Foundation officials visit Arwachin International School The Japan Foundation is working on an E-learning project, in which they are going to formulate a software which will promote Japanese language learning in schools. This is a pilot project which involves a team of four members including Mrs. Kanika Tiwrai of our school. The aim of this project is to promote Japanese language learning in all the schools in India. This team will create modules to educate and update not only students but also teachers. For this purpose the team visited our school on 20th March, 2013 to observe various software programmes that we use to educate our students. They borrowed many ideas related to Japanese language teaching from us. The teachers gave a brief demonstration of the working of the Educomp and Promethean software in teaching Japanese language. A demonstration of Kurzweil was also given by Ms. Kalpana, so that they can devise a similar software for the Japanese language. It is a matter of pride for us as we are the only school involved in this novel project and we hope to provide our best for the growth of Japanese language not only in our school but in the whole world. Translated by: Kanika Tiwari
