the list of its arts and crafts.

5

As you go along the lesson, notice some small map pieces in the following pages. These pieces will be your guide in completing the map.

What is It

MIMAROPA REGION MIMAROPA is an administrative region consists entirely of island provinces located in the Southwestern Luzon. The term MIMAROPA is a combination of the names of its constituent provinces namely Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.

MINDORO •

Ambahan is a traditional poetry of the Hanunuo-Mangyans in Mindoro. It is traditionally written with the point of a knife on a piece of bamboo using the centuries-old pre-Spanish syllabic script called Surat Mangyan. Once the letters

had been cut, they took a handful of ash and rubbed it into the thinly-carved letters to make them stand out more clearly.

An ambahan written in a bamboo container

Basket weaving is the main source of income in Puerto Galera, Mindoro. They use Nito which refers to the special vine that grows in the wild. They make only what the earth allows because Nito vine cannot be cultivated or planted, ensuring the earthfriendly and sustainable nature

Nito of their art. Each Nito woven item is one-of-a-kind, with no single design being exactly the same as the other. A large basket takes roughly one week to complete. 6

MARINDUQUE •

The Moriones festival in Marinduque is a week-long commemoration of the life and death of Jesus Christ every Holy week. Morion means masks that are made of wood or paper- mache (papier-mâché). Some of these woods come from Dapdap or Santol tree which are abundant in the province. Mask makers get their festival carve each mask w hich wood mainly in nearby forests. It takes months to Moriones weighs at least two kilograms. The participants use these masks to depict the Roman soldiers escorting Christ on his way to the Calvary.

ROMBLON •

Romblon is known as the "Marble Country" because all the islands comprising the province have marble. Quarries (the process of getting marbles) on these islands produce raw marble for sculpture and construction purposes. However, before the discovery of these marbles, Romblon had been famous for its traditional weaving and basketry. Handicrafts such as beautifully woven mats and bags are major home industry for their women.

7

PALAWAN •

Tingkop is one of the unique heritage crafts

which are original in Palawan. It is a coneshaped colander harvest basket which is made of hard-strip bamboo. These baskets are occasionally made of blackened and natural bamboo, which make the designs

stand out. The design is created by an extremely refined

Tingkop

changing of the under-over pattern of the bamboo strips. •

The Manunggul jar uncovered in Palawan was a secondary burial jar that has existed since the late Neolithic Period (895-775 B.C.) in the Philippines. It served as a container for the dug up remains of the dead. It is largely made from clay and the upper portion of the jar, as well as the cover, is carved with curvilinear scroll

Manunggul jar

designs and painted with natural iron or hematite. There are two human images riding a boat located on top of the jar’s cover. The first human image, holding an oar with a missing blade, is situated at the back area. He seems

to be controlling the oar (bugsay) rather than paddling the boat. The second human image, with arms folded across the chest, is situated at the front. The manner in which the hands of the front figure are folded across the chest is also a widespread practice in the islands when arranging the corpse. These figures represent two souls on a voyage to the afterlife.

8

After reading the previous pages, complete your Map Diary. Do it before proceeding to the next activities.

What’s Mo r e Directions: Read and answer the following questions below. Choose the sentence

of your answer in the box provided.

1.

It takes months to carve.

It is very abundant in their province.

It is woven with a one-of-a-kind design.

It is written carefully using a pointed knife in a bamboo.

It has figures which represent two souls on a voyage to the afterlife. What makes the ambahan of Hanunuo-Mangyans different from other forms of literature (writing)?

2. What makes the baskets of Mindoro special in terms of design? 3. What makes the top of the manunggul jar’s cover significant? 4. What makes the morion masks expensive? 5. What makes the design of the Tingkop in Palawan stand out?

ten bedroom Italianate mansion built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson in memory of his wife, Maria Braga, who had died during the pregnancy of his 11th child. During World War II, Filipino guerrillas, employed by the US Armed forces, intentionally set the building on fire in order to prevent invading Japanese forces from being able to use the building as a headquarters. The intention was to burn it to the ground. Despite being burned slowly for several days, the walls and foundation of the mansion remained stable. Even today, the design is still evidently elegant and the color changes from white to gray and orange to red as the sunset touches the structure.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Review the Goals Based on the Assessment Result

Department of Education ● Republic of the Philippines

What I Need to Know Physical fitness is the body’s ability to function effectively and efficiently without necessary fatigue in work, leisure activities to meet emergency situations and to resist diseases from sedentary lifestyle. Leisure is the amount of time left after all the daily routine activities are accomplished. It is a nonobligatory time where one can enjoy through activities such as sports, academic games and other productive hobbies. After reading this module, you should be able to review the goals based on the assessment results. Specifically, you are expected to: 1. identify the SMART Guide, Principle of Fitness Training and FITT; 2. improve the physical fitness goals which are below expectations; and

3. value the importance of attaining fitness target. In going through the module, you have to extend your patience in understanding and analyzing what you are reading. Follow the directions and/ or instructions in the activities. Answer the entire given test and exercises carefully. Comply the required activities provided.

7

What is it? A SMART Guide to Goal Setting When taking on any challenge, it’s a good idea to define your goals. You should identify what you want to accomplish and how you will carry out your plan. This is important when making positive change and will help you succeed. Short-term goal should be developed with a limited amount of time in mind. Example:

A 15-year old is aiming to improve his road running time over three

kilometers by five seconds each week. Long-term goal is something you want to do further in the future. It requires time

and planning. Example: A girl is aiming to be running a distance of eight kilometers by the end of the school. These goals should be: S-M-A-R-T S (Specific)

Write down what you want to achieve.

M (Measurable)

Write down amounts, times, days, and other measure factors.

A (Achievable)

Your goals should be realistic.

R (Relevant)

Your goals should be important to you.

T (Trackable)

Recording your progress helps you see what you have achieved.

Principles of Fitness Training A. Principle of Overload is the most basic of all fitness training principle. It specifies that you must perform physical exercise than normal amounts (overload) to get an improvement in physical fitness and health benefits. Example:

If improvement in muscular strength is the goal, the muscle must be exercised with a greater weight than normal.

8

B. Principle of Specificity indicates that you must train a specific energy system and specific muscle groups in order for them to improve. Example:

If you want to develop the cardiovascular endurance, you must design a training program that primarily utilizes a particular energy system.

C. Principle of Progression indicates that load could be increased gradually overtime to remain effective and safe for best results. Example: An individual training to gain cardio respiratory endurance may begin in an exercise program by jogging 2 kilometers at a moderate intensity. The next week, the individual could increase distance to 2 ½ kilometers while still working at the same level of intensity. Week after week, the overload could be adjusted until the desired level of fitness is attained.

D. Principle of Variation maintains individual’s interest and provides a change of pace while still making progress toward desired goals. Variation lessens boredom and overcome periods where there seem to be little progress. Example: Alternating hard workouts with easier workouts, and running in different locations within the community are some ways to introduce variability into one’s fitness program.

E. Principle of Recovery is a principle that incorporates time to rest into the fitness program. Example: An individual may work one day on improving upper body strength and devote the next day’s training to working lower body strength. FITT Principle

9

A well-design personal physical activity plan will outline how often (frequency), how long (time), and how hard (intensity) a person exercises, and what kinds of exercises (type) are selected. FITT Principle is a formula in which each letter represents a factor important for determining the correct amount of physical activity. Applying the Basic Training Principles Frequency refers to the number of exercise session per week; for example, three to five times a week. Intensity is the degree of effort or exertion put forth by an individual during exercise. Timeis the duration of the length of the activity, such as 40 minutes of exercise is how long an exercise must be performed to be effective. Type is the mode of exercise being performed. The selection of the type of exercise should be guided by the fitness goal to be achieved.

Activity 2: BUBBLE MAP Directions: Copy the bubble map in your MAPEH activity notebook. Write your idea (words or phrases) about NUTRITION inside the bubbles.

NUTRITION

3

What is it?

READ TO UNDERSTAND

NUTRITION refers to the intake of food in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition depends on the combination of food having the required different nutrients we should take on a daily basis. Excess or deficient intake of some nutrients may lead to illness.

NUTRIENTS are the substances found in food that your body needs to function properly.

Why is Adolescents’ Nutrition Important? The changes in growth and development during adolescence create increased demand for energy and nutrients. As an adolescent, your total nutrient needs are higher at this stage than at any other stage in your life cycle. It only shows that nutrition and physical growth are essentially related. Optional nutrition is a requisite for achieving your full growth potentials. The physical changes during adolescence affect the body’s nutritional needs. For

boys, muscle mass increases and for girls, body fats also increase. Your body needs greater amount of calcium, iron, protein, carbohydrates and fiber. As appetite is also likely to increase, it is important that food choices are made carefully.
