Medical Student Essay Awards Sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology.
Deadline to Apply: October 15, 2012 Extended Neuroscience Award / Established 1991 This award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering a highly competitive award for the best essay in neuroscience. Essays are judged on the basis of quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.
2012 Recipient: Matthew Elrick, Ann Arbor, MI Medical Student Essay Award Subcommittee Selection Statement: “Dr. Elrick was awarded the Medical Student Essay award for Neuroscience based on his work that looks at the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of Niemann-Pick type C Disease. The awards committee felt that this work would serve as the foundation for a career as a physician-scientist.”

Milton Shy Award in Clinical Neurology / Established 1971 This award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering a highly competitive award for the best essay in clinical neurology. Essays are judged on the basis of quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.
2012 Recipient: Tenneille Loo, Toronto, ON, Canada Medical Student Essay Award Subcommittee Selection Statement: “The Shy award was given to Tenneille Loo for her study of the pharmacogenetics of vincristine induced neuropathy. The awards committee felt that this work nicely combined the clinical area of adverse drug reactions with the developing field of pharmacogenetics, specifically looking at genetic predisposition of ill-effects of medications.”

Essays are judged on the basis of quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.
2012 Recipient: Jessica Shields, New Orleans, LA Medical Student Essay Award Subcommittee Selection Statement: “Jessica Shields’ essay on Native American ethno-botany in the treatment of neurological disease was awarded the Roland P. Mackay Award. The committee felt that this essay captured both an important historical component of certain therapeutic strategies but also touched on the importance of cultural awareness in our field.”

Korey Award in Experimental Neurology / Established 1971 This award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering a highly competitive award for the best essay in experimental neurology. Essays are judged on the basis of quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.
2012 Recipient: Mark Ziats, Houston, TX Medical Student Essay Award Subcommittee Selection Statement: “Dr. Ziats was awarded the Korey award for his essay on the genetics that may underlie autism spectrum disorders. His study provides support to the idea that genetic abnormalities may, in part, be responsible for the molecular abnormalities that help define the pathology of these neuropsychiatric disorders.”

Presentation Recipients of the Medical Student Essay Awards are expected to give a poster presentation based on the selected manuscript at the 65th AAN Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.
Recipient Will Receive ·· Certificate of recognition ·· $350 prize (Shy, Korey, and Mackay Awards) ·· $1,000 prize (Extended Neuroscience Award) ·· Complimentary registration for the 65th Annual Meeting ·· One-year complimentary subscription to the journal Neurology ® ·· Reimbursement for the 65th Annual Meeting travel and housing ·· $100 per day for expenses (up to two days) ·· Recognition at the 2013 Awards Luncheon at the 65th Annual Meeting
Eligibility ·· Must be enrolled and in good standing in medical school ·· Must submit an original essay targeted to general neurologists (essay cannot be a previously published manuscript for Shy, Korey, and Mackay Awards) ·· Must have spent less than one year on a project leading to the submitted essay (for Shy, Korey, and Mackay) ·· Must have spent more than one year on a project leading to the submitted essay (for Extended Neuroscience Award)
Application Procedure Applicants should submit one complete set of the following: 1. Completed application form 2. Current curriculum vitae 3. Essay using the following guidelines (essays will not be returned): ·· Must be typed, double-spaced, using a standard font ·· Maximum length of 30 pages (for Extended Neuroscience Award) ·· Mamixmum length of 3,500 words and no more than five figures/tables (for Shy, Korey, and Mackay Awards) ·· Only deceased persons may be subjects of biographical papers 4. Letter attesting to eligibility criteria and identifying award category 5. Maximum 200-word abstract 6. Letter from a faculty sponsor detailing the extent of technical or financial support received, the student’s individual contribution to the project, and verifying that the student is the sole author of the essay 7. Contributorship statement that provides clarification of the specific contributions made regarding idea generation, drafting and manuscript preparation, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript editing. A statement must be provided for each author if more than one is listed.
