Thwarted democrazy & the white privilege

While a bunch of white mobs feels it is their privilege to storm the Capitol building, some people lost their lives in the chaos and some got injured. It is shameful that the United State of America's democracy was seen dancing naked at the edge of brimming fire before the world. All thanks to the entitled ones, that think the result of the recently concluded 2020 election that saw Joe Biden and Kamala Harris emerge the winner by electoral college vote. Pro-Trump supporters are not satisfied with the result and they stormed the capital to violently protest against it. Many believed that the violence by MAGA protesters was incited online by the president and to avoid further embarrassment to thwart the democracy of the foremost country in the world. In the statement below, it is believed that this tweet geared MAGA supporters and their ego were massaged. According to Washington Post,

Trump’s tweet last month pushing baseless fraud claims and promoting the “big protest” on Jan. 6 — “Be there, will be wild!” — has become a central rallying cry. It was the top post on thedonald.win Tuesday morning, and anonymous commenters saw it as a call to action: “We’ve got marching orders,” the top reply said. Another tweet says, @JoyAnnReid Stating the obvious: Records show fervent Trump fans fueled US Capitol takeover Other tweets on the attack on Us Capitols: @biolakazeem A sitting president refuses to accept election results, instigates an attack on the US Capitol & we are being told companies/services cutting him off is tyranny & repression of free speech. It's very interesting people are surprised that there are consequences for Trump's conduct.

@Karnythia One of the people who recorded herself saying the plan was to storm the Capitol, break windows & drain the swamp is now astonished that she is facing criminal charges. If you recorded yourself doing the crime, broadcast it & were proud of it... Many blacks raise the ante and were shocked at how the white Americans (pro-trump) MAGA protesters were treated with fairness. Here are few tweets from Black Live Matters supporters. Bishop Talbert Swan Charlie Kirk has repeatedly condemned Black Lives Matter activists as thugs and terrorists, yet, he funded 80 busloads of armed, white supremacist, seditionist, terrorist, hooligans to storm the US Capitol, kidnap legislators, kill cops, and overthrow the government. The United Nations, UN has today condemned the mass abduction of students at the Government Science School at Kankara, Kastina State. This was disclosed in a statement by the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, on

Monday. Gunmen on motorcycles stormed the Government Science School at Kankara late on Friday and engaged security forces in a fierce gunbattle, forcing hundreds of students to flee and hide in surrounding bushes and forest. UN has howev-

er expressed its concern and also condemned the abduction. Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, who visited the school on Saturday said soldiers were working to locate and free the hostages, adding that 333 students are still missing.

According to the statement, “the Secretary-General strongly condemns the 11 December attack on a secondary school in Katsina State, Nigeria, and the reported abduction of hundreds of boys by suspected armed bandits.” “The Secretary-General calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children and for their safe return to their families. He reiterates that attacks on schools and other educational facilities constitute a grave violation of human rights.” He howerer urged the Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible for this act to justice, adding that the United Nations will constantly support the Government and people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime.

US Decides: VP Pence to attend Biden inauguration Eunice Ayobami Despite the United State President, Donald Trump’s rage over the State’s election result, the president-elect of the State, Joe Biden, has announced that Mike Pence, the Current State VP would be welcome at his formal swearing-in, due to take place in a scaled-down format due to the coronavirus. According to Multimedia Reports, the inauguration which is set to take place on January 20 will be attended by Pence, who was forced to take shelter from the intruders during the riot. “I think it’s important that as much as we

can stick to what have been the historical precedents of how an administration changes should be maintained,” Biden told reporters. “We’d be honoured to have him there, and to move forward in the transition.” In contrast, Trump said he would not attend the inauguration in his final tweet before being removed from Twitter on Friday. The outgoing president has been accused of provoking the Capitol’s violence, and now faces an unprecedented second impeachment, expected to begin this week.

Electoral College In second impeachment bid, makes it official: Democrats accuse Trump Biden won, of inciting Trump lost insurrection Dozens of people who attacked police officers, stole computers and smashed windows during the rampage at the Capitol have been arrested for their role in the violence, and officials have opened 25 domestic terrorism investigations. Trump acknowledged a new administration would take office on Jan. 20 in a video statement after the attack but has not appeared in public. Twitter and Facebook have suspended his accounts, citing the risk of him inciting violence. DEMOCRATIC SUPPORT Representative Jim McGovern, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, said he expected the impeachment article would pass the House. “What this president did is unconscionable, and he needs to be held to account,” McGovern told CNN.

Congressional Democrats began a push on Monday to force U.S. President Donald Trump from office, introducing an article of impeachment that accuses him of inciting insurrection in connection with the violent attack on the Capitol last week. The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives could vote on impeachment as early as Wednesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters. Passage would make Trump, a Republican, the only U.S. president ever to be impeached twice.

As the House convened on Monday, Republicans blocked an effort to immediately consider a resolution asking Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the U.S. Constitution’s never-used 25th Amendment to remove an unfit president. “The U.S. House must never adopt a resolution that demands the removal of a duly elected president, without any hearings, debate or recorded votes,” said Republican Representative Alex Mooney, who raised the objection.

Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the seat of Congress last week, forcing lawmakers who were certifying Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory into hiding in a harrowing assault on the heart of American democracy that left five dead.

The House still could vote as early as Tuesday on the resolution for use of the 25th Amendment, which allows the vice president and the Cabinet to remove a president who is incapable of fulfilling his duties.

The violence came after Trump urged supporters to march on the Capitol at a rally where he repeated false claims that his resounding defeat in the Nov. 3 election was illegitimate. Many House Democrats and a handful of Republicans say Trump should not be trusted to serve out his term, which ends on Jan. 20.

Pence and his fellow Republicans have shown little interest in invoking the amendment, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats have tried to ramp up the pressure on them to act against Trump. They called on Pence to respond within 24 hours after passage of the resolution.

“We have a president most of us believe participated in encouraging an insurrection and an attack on this building and on democracy and trying to subvert the counting of the presidential ballot,” Hoyer told reporters.

“As our next step, we will move forward with bringing impeachment legislation to the floor. The president’s threat to America is urgent, and so too will be our action,” Pelosi said in a statement.

The lawmakers who drafted the impeachment charge say they have locked in the support of at least 214 of the chamber’s 222 Democrats, indicating strong odds of passage. Biden has so far not weighed in on impeachment, saying it is a matter for Congress. Pence was in the Capitol along with his family when Trump’s supporters attacked, and he and Trump are currently not on speaking terms. Pence’s office did not respond to questions about using the 25th Amendment to oust Trump. A source said last week he was opposed to the idea. House Democrats impeached Trump in December 2019 for pressuring Ukraine to investigate Biden, but the Republican-controlled Senate voted not to convict him. Even if the House impeaches Trump again, the Senate, which is currently controlled by Republicans, would not take up the charges until Jan. 19 at the earliest, Trump’s last full day in office. Democrats’ latest effort to force out Trump also faces long odds of success without bipartisan support. It requires a two-thirds majority to convict and remove Trump in the 100-member Senate, where Republicans will have a slim majority until the winners of the recent Georgia runoff races are seated and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is sworn in. Harris would be the tie-breaking vote in the chamber. So far, only four Republican lawmakers have said publicly that Trump should not serve out the remaining nine days in his term. Source: Reuters

Africa Renaissance AINA ADEMOLA [email protected] OgbeniDemola

The African struggle and its ingredients.

Before we kick start any program towards liberation, complete and seamless emancipation, we, first of all, must identify some necessary ingredients which must serve as nuclei in the liberation struggle. As Friedrich Engels said “Whenever there’s a revolutionary convulsion, it means some basic social wants are lacking in the background” to buttress and validate this Frantz Fanon “We revolt for no specific culture, we revolt, simply because for so many reasons we can no longer breathe”. This itself is a very Germaine ingredient that will ultimately lead to a

radical revolutionary explosion. We must begin to identify the enemy, the oppressor, the reason we are where we are, hothead machinations of the oppressor and the tactics he has put in place to keep us subjugated. The core problem of Afrika is bad leadership, and we can see the homogeneousness of this today, it is conspicuous and unequivocal that the problem Afrika has today is a uniform problem, the same leadership problem we have in Nigeria it’s the same we have in Uganda, Angola, Cameroon etc and this is directly affecting the life and development of

African people. Now that this has been identified, it’s only normal and proper to embark on a process to annihilate this economically and politically asphyxiating conditions by any means necessary. The African National bourgeoisie is suffering from an unprecedented level of paranoia, the African National bourgeoisie is an enemy of the struggle, a traitor, and dare we say it, a bigot who has done nothing but impeding the struggle of the total liberation of the masses by the capitalistic machinations of oppression and subjugation in his possession. As Frantz Fanon said, “The African Na-

tional bourgeoisie is an extension of the metropolitan bourgeoisie, that’s where he gets his legitimacy, validity and strength from” the African National bourgeoisie is a circumspect oligarchic and an autarchic who applies brute force on the people for their agitation and perturbation for good governance, justice and egalitarianism. This assertion was validated by Kwame Nkrumah when he said “capitalists are cohesive, they are conscious of themselves as a class, they have objective interests, they are aware of their position and the threat posed to their continued dominance by a rising tied of peasants

Africa can only be free when African decide that their continent cannot continue to be a playing ground. and working-class revolt” the cohesiveness and the exhibition of mental disequilibrium of the ruling class can be manifested in cases where they apply brute force, where they make use of their deluded instruments, the police and the army who have been alienated from their class against the people who are demanding, nothing but good governance, justice and a total end to oppression. This wicked act is pervasive over Africa and has subjected Afrikans to living in a riddled world bound with taboos, oppression and systemic restrictions. A revolutionary intelligentsia must erupt from the subject people, as Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah said “when an intelligentsias rises from a

subject people, it becomes the vanguard of the resistance of an alien rule” Now, to embark on a chain-breaking program there has to, first of all, be unity & solidarity, there has to be proper political education the national, social and political consciousness of the subjected people must be elevated because a struggle can only be successful when the masses have attained social consciousness. This shall be done by the Vanguard Revolutionary party who shall be in charge of the supervision and organization of the masses of the people towards freedom and Justice. Some specific people have to be identified and harnessed in this just struggle. The peasants, working class and the Lumpenproletari-

ats. Now, who are the Lumpenproletariats? The Lumpenproletariats are a subdivision of the peasant stratum they are very chaotic, disorganized, disoriented and un-revolutionary, they are the thugs, hoodlums, career criminals and permanently unemployed. These people are a very important sect of the masses and a very vital ingredient for the struggle, they’d answer the call to revolt, they are the ones that’d be needed to urbanize the struggle if we fail to make use of them, or we sideline them, they’d answer the call to revolt but this time on the oppressors' side, this is a major reason why many movements fail in Africa. Let’s take the #EndSars movement, for example, the #EndSars movement was

a class clash, it was a leaderless movement that was anchored strictly by the working class, the movement was devoid of a revolutionary intelligentsia, it was null of the peasants and the Lumpenproletariat and this is a major reason why it failed because the elites used the lumpenproletariats the movement failed to use to their advantage. That’s why we saw that the govt allegedly used thugs and hoodlums to destabilize the movement. These people could have been used to the advantage of the movement. As Frantz Fanon said ‘The underprivileged and starving peasants who very soon discovers that only violence pays Colonization or decolonization is simply a power struggle. The

exploited realize that their liberation implies using every means available and force is the first’. A time will come when the starving peasants of Africa will be their oppressor take to their heels. As people who want change for Africa, our major weapon is truth, truth hastens the dislocation of the colonial regime and fosters the emergence of a new nation, truth is what protects the natives and undoes their foreigners. The oppressor hates to hear the truth. Africa can only be free when African decide that their continent cannot continue to be a playing ground.

Ford to close Brazil manufacturing operations, take $4.1 billion in charges

Ford Motor Co said on Monday it will close its three plants in Brazil this year and take pretax charges of about $4.1 billion as the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the company’s under use of its manufacturing capacity. Production will cease immediately at Ford’s plants in Camaçari and Taubaté, with some parts production continuing for a few months to support inventories for aftermarket sales. The Troller plant in Horizonte, Brazil, will continue to operate until the fourth quarter. Ford officials said the action was part of the $11 billion global restructuring previously forecast by the U.S. automaker, of which it had accounted for $4.2 billion through the third quarter of 2020. Ford shares closed up more than 3%. The plant closures affect about 5,000 employees, mostly in Brazil, Ford spokesman T.R. Reid said on a conference call with reporters. Industry vehicle sales fell 26% in Brazil last year and are not expected to rebound to 2019

levels until 2023 with an emphasis on less profitable fleet sales, Ford said. “We know these are very difficult, but necessary, actions to create a healthy and sustainable business,” Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley said in a statement. “We are moving to a lean, asset-light business model by ceasing production in Brazil.” Ford officials said the plant closures are part of the company’s strategy to achieve 8% global operating margins. Ford, which has operated in Brazil for more than a century, has begun discussions with its unions and others about the layoffs. In Camaçari, in northeastern Brazil, the union called an emergency meeting at the factory gates at the first shift on Tuesday to take a stance on the loss of 4,059 jobs. “This very hard blow took us by surprise. We never imagined that Ford could close its factories in Brazil,” said union leader Julio Bonfim in a video message to the workers.

The closures marked another retreat by Ford in a developing market after the Dearborn, Michigan-based company last month called off its auto joint venture with India’s Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. As a result of the plant closures, Ford will end sales in South America of EcoSport SUV, Ka subcompact car and T4 SUV once inventories are sold. Ford retains a plant in Argentina and another in Uruguay. Ford said it will maintain its product development center in Bahia, its proving ground in Tatuí, São Paulo, and its regional headquarters in São Paulo. Of the $4.1 billion in charges, Ford said it expects to record about $2.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020 and about $1.6 billion in 2021. The charges include about $1.6 billion in noncash charges and the rest in cash, primarily in 2021 to cover the layoffs. Source: Business Reuters

Walmart to create fintech start-up with investment firm behind Robinhood

Walmart said Monday that it’s creating a fintech start-up with Ribbit Capital, one of the venture capital firms behind Robinhood.

said it will also name independent industry experts to the board and may acquire or partner with other fintech companies.

The big-box retailer did not share the name of the new company or say when its services will be available. It said it will develop unique and affordable financial products for Walmart employees and customers. Shares of Walmart were up 1.5% on the news in after-hours trading Monday. Walmart’s market cap is $416.7 billion.

“For years, millions of customers have put their trust in Walmart to not only save them money when they shop with us but help them manage their financial needs,” Furner said in a news release. “And they’ve made it clear they want more from us in the financial services arena.”

The fintech start-up will be majority-owned by Walmart and its board will include several company executives, including Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs and Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner. Walmart

With more than 4,700 stores across the country, Walmart interacts with millions of customers each year – including some who don’t have a relationship with a bank or a financial advisor. Six percent of adults don’t have a checking, savings or money

market account, according to the Federal Reserve. About 16% are “underbanked,” meaning they have a bank account but also use alternative financial service products, like a money order. Those Americans are more likely to turn to short-term solutions, such as a pawn shop or a payday loan, which can lead to additional charges or high interest fees. Walmart already offers some financial services for customers. For example, it has Walmart MoneyCard, a prepaid debit card that customers can load with money and use for purchases. The card has some features that encourage money management or help people who may have a challenged credit history, such as no overdraft or

monthly fees and no minimum balance requirement. The retailer also offers alternative payment plans for customers on a tight budget, such as layaway and Affirm, a fintech company that allows customers to buy an online item immediately and pay in installments. Walmart’s co-owner of the new company, Ribbit Capital, has a history of investing in fintech companies. Its portfolio includes Affirm; Robinhood, a fee-free investing start-up; and Credit Karma, a company that offers consumer-friendly tools like free credit score checks.

Boi concludes US $1,000,000,000 syndicated term loan in the international market

In line with the focus of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to revitalize Nigeria’s industrial sector and create 10 million jobs by leveraging the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan and the Economic

Recovery and Growth Plan, the Bank of Industry (BOI) has just successfully concluded a landmark US$1 Billion loan syndication transaction. The transaction is aimed at further improving the capacity of

the bank to continue to effectively support Micro, Small, Medium and Large enterprises (across key sectors) of the Nigerian economy with affordable loans of medium to long-term tenor, alongside moratori-

um benefits. This transaction marks the third major international debt syndication deal successfully concluded by BOI within the last 3 years. In 2018, the bank raised the sum of US$750 million (Ar-

Afreximbank and Credit Suisse acted as Co-ordinating Mandated Lead Arrangers, Underwriters, and Bookrunners of the transaction. Africa Finance Corporation, First Rand (Rand Merchant Bank) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation subsequently joined as Mandated Lead Arrangers and Bookrunners, while the Export-Import Bank of China joined as a Mandated Lead Arranger. Afreximbank acted as the Facility Agent and Security Trustee for the deal. We are pleased to

report that 28 international financial institutions and funds participated in this transaction, which was initially launched at US$750m, but upsized to US$1bn due to over-subscription. Key factors that led to the success of this deal despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic include amongst others, the impressive credit ratings of the bank (long term issuer default rating of B with stable outlook from Fitch, long term issuer rating of B2 from Moody’s and Aa from Agusto), its ISO certifications in both Quality Management Systems and Information Security, as well as the strong strategic partnership that the bank has developed with the Nigerian commercial banks, who patriotically continue to provide credit enhance-

ments and de-risking tools to BOI customers. Of particular and special note is the support of our owners (the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated and the Central Bank of Nigeria), the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and our supervising ministry, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his Committee of Governors supported BOI by providing a full guarantee for the facility and a 100% currency swap to mitigate the foreign exchange rate risk. The facility will be disbursed in Naira at single digit interest rates to borrowers with bankable projects. Between 2015 and October 2020, the Bank of Industry with the support of its various stakeholders disbursed over ₦945 billion

With the successful conclusion of this deal, the Board and management of Bank of Industry is confident that the bank is now better positioned to catalyze domestic production and facilitate job creation on a transformational scale, enhance local industry competitiveness, attract domestic and foreign investments, integrate our local industries into domestic, regional and global value chains, grow our export earnings and positively impact the overall economic development of Nigeria in line with its mandate and especially in light of the planned commencement of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in January 2021.

SpaceX simplified: Everything you need to know about Elon Musk's rocket empire If you've heard something about a Starship bound for Mars, NASA astronauts riding a Dragon and Starlink broadband, here are the key details

SpaceX, the rocket company founded by tech billionaire Elon Musk, was created with the mission of taking humans to Mars. Nearly two decades on, it's already taken NASA astronauts to orbit and accomplished plenty of other milestones along the way.If you're having a hard time keeping up with SpaceX's plans to replace international airline flights with orbital rocket trips, create a global broadband network and develop a Mars rocket, don't worry. We created this SpaceX primer so you can get up to speed fast.

How SpaceX started In 2002, Musk and friends traveled to Russia to buy a refurbished intercontinental ballistic missile. The Silicon Valley prodigy who made millions off internet startups wasn't looking to start a business at the time. He wanted to spend a big chunk, or maybe all of his fortune, on a stunt he hoped would reinvigorate interest in funding NASA and space exploration. The idea was to buy a Russian rocket on the cheap and use it to send plants or mice to

Mars -- and hopefully bring them back, too. Ideally, the spectacle would get the world excited about space again. But Musk's Moscow meeting didn't go well and he decided he could build rockets himself, calculating that he could undercut existing launch contractors in the process. SpaceX was founded just a few months later.

What's a Falcon 9 rocket? Musk initially hoped to make it to Mars by 2010, but just getting one rocket into orbit took six years. A SpaceX Falcon 1 orbited Earth for the first time on Sept. 28, 2008. This paved the way for a nine-engine version of the rocket, the Falcon 9, the company's workhorse since its first launch in 2010. Falcon 9 is a two-stage orbital rocket that's been used to launch satellites for companies and governments, resupply the International Space Station and even send the US Air Force's super-secret space plane on its mysterious long missions. Over the past nine years the company has flown more than 80 Falcon 9 missions.

What really sets Falcon 9 apart from the competition is its unprecedented ability to send a payload into orbit and then have its first stage return to Earth, landing either on solid ground or on a floating droneship landing pad at sea, another SpaceX innovation. After a few explosive failed attempts, a Falcon 9 finally landed safely on Dec. 22, 2015, and a few months later another touched down on a droneship for the first time. Several recovered Falcon 9 rockets have since flown and landed again. On May 11, 2018, SpaceX launched its first Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket, the "final version" designed to be reused up to 100 times with periodic refurbishments. In 2020, we saw multiple Falcon 9 boosters launch and land up for the seventh time in their individual careers. Reusing the nose cone multiple times is also becoming routine practice.

A Dragon that flies SpaceX's Dragon craft has been used to carry cargo to the International Space Station and on May 31, 2020,

its Crew Dragon made history as the first commercial spaceship to send astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the ISS. Dragon was also the first commercial spacecraft to be recovered after a trip from orbit. NASA selected Crew Dragon, along with Boeing's Starliner, to be the first spacecraft to carry astronauts to the ISS since the end of the shuttle program. The initiative How to follow Falcon flights You can watch every Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch via the company's website and YouTube channel. Quite a few of them are also carried on CNET Highlights. Each broadcast typically goes live about 15 minutes before the scheduled launch time. To keep up with the constantly changing schedule of launches, the best source is the SpaceX Twitter feed. It's also a good idea to follow Musk's account, if you don't already. You can also check our own feed of SpaceX stories to quickly get up to speed with what the company is up to.

Starship to the moon and Mars

Technology SpaceX plans to use Falcon Heavy to launch some large payloads in the coming months, but it's already at work on an even bigger rocket called Starship (previously referred to BFR, Big Falcon Rocket or Big F***ing Rocket). Musk hopes this even more massive rocket will be able to transport cargo and eventually human passengers around the world and the solar system. He envisions using Starship to ferry people on superfast international flights via space and eventually to bases yet to be built on the moon, Mars and beyond.

the Boring Company, to bore tunnels on Mars that could be used for human habitation. Paul Wooster, the company's lead engineer for its Mars plan, said at the 2018 Mars Society conference that the first people sent to the Red Planet would live on the landed Starship spacecraft indefinitely while building habitation, landing pads and other initial infrastructure. suffered a setback in April 2019 when an unoccupied Crew Dragon exploded during a ground test because of a leak in the pressurization system.

A single-engine Starship prototype called Starhopper left the ground for the first time on July 25, 2019, hovering about 20 meters (66 feet) off the ground before landing a short distance away at SpaceX's test facility in south Texas. This was followed by a few more hops in late 2019 and mid-2020. The first high-altitude flight of a prototype that actually looks more like a rocket came on Dec. 10, 2020. The prototype SN8 successfully flew to a height similar to the cruising altitude of commercial jets and then performed a new flip maneuver to come in for a landing. It came in a bit fast, however, and the flight ended in a spectacular explosion. We expect to see a few more of these high-flying tests in 2021 with the goal of getting that landing down and also reaching orbit soon.Musk offered his plans for a large city on Mars at two International Aeronautical Congress meetings, but he has yet to give many details on what life on the Red Planet would be like. He's said SpaceX is primarily interested in providing the transportation, while allowing others to worry about the infrastructure. However, company President Gwynne Shotwell said it might make sense for SpaceX sister venture,

Roadster in the direction of Mars. Two of the three Falcon 9s that made up Falcon Heavy also landed nearly simultaneously at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

the globe with high-speed internet access. The company says the service could create a new stream of revenue to help fund its pricey Mars ambitions.

More than 15 years after his initial trip to Moscow, Musk finally pulled off the international spectacle he had conceived in 2001, and he's also built a viable business in the process.

A second batch of 50 satellites launched six months later, with more to follow in relatively rapid succession. The scale of the project has some astronomers worried that a sky filled with thousands of satellites could interfere with their observations. The trains of newly launched satellites are easily viewable from the ground as they gain altitude. SpaceX says it plans to work with astronomers and take steps to mitigate Starlink's impacts on astronomy, including launching satellites with a sunshade dubbed "visorsat" to reduce their reflectivity.

The second launch of Falcon Heavy came April 11, 2019, and was followed by the first successful landing of all three first-stage rocket cores. A third Falcon Heavy launch was conducted June 25, 2019,

As the company worked towards its first 1,000 Starlink satellites launched, it launched a beta of its broadband service in the final quarter of 2020 limited to northern latitudes. The rollout is expected to expand in 2021.

What's next?

But the first flight of Crew Dragon with humans aboard was a success. Hurley and Behnken then rode the Dragon back to Earth a few months later, and another group of four astronauts, including one from Japan's JAXA, took the second trip to orbit on a Crew Dragon in November 2020 Falcon Heavy lifting SpaceX grabbed heaps of attention in February of 2018 when it launched Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket launched from the US since the Saturn V that sent astronauts to the moon. Basically, three Falcon 9 rockets strapped together, the huge launch system sent a test payload consisting of Musk's personal red Tesla

and SpaceX took reusability a step further by catching the payload fairing (the nose cone that shields the payload during launch) using a ship equipped with a gigantic net. As for Starman, he finally made a close pass by Mars in October, 2020.Sights on Starlink SpaceX isn't just working on getting things into space. It has also started operating in space to bring the universe to us. In May 2019, the company launched a first batch of 60 small satellites designed to lead the way for a massive constellation of broadband satellites. The plan, dubbed Starlink, is to use up to 42,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit to blanket

Since its inception, SpaceX has aimed to get to Mars, but the company is involved in non-space-related projects on Earth like the high-speed Hyperloop transit concept. Musk's Boring Company tunnel-digging and t r a f fi c - m i t i g a t i n g ventures are also largely operating out of SpaceX headquarters in Southern California. Unlike the other big Musk company, Tesla Motors, SpaceX isn't publicly traded. Musk has said he doesn't plan to take SpaceX public until the company realizes its Mars ambitions. That means SpaceX might make sense as the home of any other future Muskian side projects like Hyperloop and the Boring Company in the meantime.

Royal Family told to 'stop taking' UK taxpayers' money - 'We do not owe you a living!'

THE Royal Family has been warned that the UK taxpayer does not "owe them a living" by the CEO of the anti-monarchist group, Republic. Mr Smtih said: "I think all of them are very financially well-off already.

state and his or her family should receive no money from the taxpayer as is common practice." He continued: "Also, any reasonable look at this area should stress that the taxpayer needed to pay for security

"They have friends and supporters who will make sure they remain well-off. "They have got plenty of money in the bank. "Prince Charles is given a £20 million income a year from us. "Ultimately, even if they ended up on £30,000, most of us cope with that income, so I do not have sympathy for them.

"Also, the Duchy of Lancaster from which the Queen pays for the other working royals. "The taxpayer is not involved.

"We do not owe them a living so they need to stop taking our money and work out how they will live beyond that." However, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams strongly disagreed with the view put forward by Republic. He stated that Republic's view excludes the benefits of the Duchy of Cornwall that pays for Prince Charles. Mr Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: "It's a very curious assertion that a head of

Crown Lands in exchange for it in 1760, lasted until 2011 and has since been replaced by the Sovereign Grant which sensibly covers these costs and, excluding security, it is estimated that the cost of the monarchy is £1.24p per person per year including the cost of refurbishment of Buckingham Palace, the core cost is just 74p per year." The royal commentator added: "This excludes the benefits from the Duchy of Cornwall which pays for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall and the Cambridges.

and, in addition to that, for the upkeep of buildings used, for staff and for travel. "The Civil List, dating from George 111 who handed over his income from the

"There is no mention of the benefits from having the world's most high profile monarchy as we do, in which there is such vast media interest, the revenues accrued from tourism, from royal trips abroad for British business and for charity given the 2,000 engagements which, in a normal year, the royals undertake and the over 3,000 organisations which have royal links and value these greatly."

We are screwed! Covid-19: the unplanned turn of events in the events industry.

The events industry intrinsically centres on planning and management. This involves the whole gamut of managing a project. The principles of project management are deployed and applied to the creation and development of small and/or large-scale personal or corporate events such as festivals, conferences, ceremonies, weddings, formal parties, concerts, or conventions.

Seasoned practitioners in the industry are known to be astute planners and managers. The sheer amount of details they have to deal with, and meticulously so, is unbelievable. They are known to be adept at anticipating and managing crisis and risk in the line of duty. For the real professionals, nothing, it seems, can take them unaware such that they will not have an adequate response

– until the Covid-19 pandemic. A lot has been experienced and said about this pandemic, but its perennial nuisance to society offers no end in sight to the conversation. Economic experts, policymakers, governments, business owners and indeed the larger society are still counting the cost; in the same breath, trying to contain the spread while frantically pursuing the cure.

Every sector has taken a big blow no doubt, but amongst the most devastated, is the event industry. The reason is not far fetched. By nature, events are occasion for, and instruments of socializing (can’t recall ever witnessing a one-man event). Unfortunately, the first item on the fight against covid-19 protocol is social distancing! At the initial lockdown stage, everyone was man-

Marketing Insights, Trends and Analysis dated to stay at home and could only come out under strict conditions of going to get food, medicine and essential supplies. Physical contact or gatherings were discouraged and in some cases prohibited by the authorities. Businesses, even banks and public offices were shut. Only medical, security and essential services were permitted to move albeit with strict adherence to the Covid-19 protocols. Initially, the lockdown subsisted for an average of three to four months before the gradual ease of the same. In those months, the event industry remained one sector that was rendered absolutely inactive. This giant industry valued by tech point Africa at $20bn in Nigeria alone, was rendered comatose.

dle-class family spends over $15,000 per event, with Lagos State alone reportedly hosting over 20,000 events monthly in 2015, …this is asides the several events being held outside of Lagos.” Jonathan Eze, in Thisday Newspaper, describes the sector in Nigeria as “An industry that contributes conservatively over N100billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria annually and potentially has about N1trillion in turnover…”

Concerts, tradeshows, carnivals, conferences, commemorative ceremonies and celebrations, awards and conferences, major sports events were cancelled all over the world. The largest global sporting event, the Olympics (Tokyo 2020) was postponed, to hold hopefully in the summer of 2021. Wimbledon, arguably the most prestigious tennis tournament of the four grand slam tournaments in professional tennis (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open), was cancelled for the first time, since the Second World War (WWII).

The list is endless: planners and managers with their staff; food and beverages manufacturers with their entire supply and retail chain; owners and managers of halls and events centres; decorators and rental businesses; musicians, entertainers, comperes and DJs; photographers, videographers and multimedia production outfits; stagehands, technicians and set designers; publicists, public relations and advertising practitioners’; airline, hoteliers, security companies and more.

Nigerians are well known for the ‘owambe’ culture – our robust appetite and penchant for elaborate ceremonies and partying at every opportunity or I dare say excuse. Weddings, funerals, child naming, baby dedication, baby shower, house warming, car ‘washing’, graduation, matriculation, promotion, birthdays and more is seen as an opportunity to throw a party and show how ‘blessed’ (affluent) a family or an individual is. According to a business support technology company, Techpoint Africa, “Statistics have it that an average Nigerian company or mid-

Slowly, just as the gradual easing of the lockdown, the event industry is in a painful restart. Many scheduled events remain postponed indefinitely while new ones are even more remote. However, it is noteworthy that the creativity and the resilience of industry professionals are beginning to respond to the new normal. With the latitude offered,

the event industry is going digital, deploying and applying technology to host virtual events. ‘Zoom parties’ have become part of our new normal. This is a situation where a whole community of people, literarily congregate online for an event. This innovation creates a new kind of event where a stage is set for the main actors/celebrant for instance, with the approved size of attendees permitted physically present while every other ‘attendee’ participates real-time from their devices from different locations across the world. Conferences, birthday parties’ even concerts, convocation ceremonies and swearing into office of government functionaries have held in this manner. While there is the argument that such events may lack the raw energy of physically hanging out, networking and socializing, events are still able to hold rather than outright cancellations. Industry practitioners are able to work again and earn some revenue, which will be helpful in mitigating their huge losses. The challenges also entail acquiring the capacity to effectively utilize these new and fast developing and sometimes complex ‘potpourri’ of technologies on offer. Planners and managers will have to compete for the limited, though growing skilled IT wizards, for in-house employment or contractual outsourcing. This may be a new cost on the budget, but savings will also be made on venue, security and perhaps food and beverages, especially on fully digital events. New Concerns As actual events resume gradually, managers and planners have to step up their considerations from the usual with respect to the safety and health of their staff, sponsors and attendees. They must be familiar with and train their staff on the new protocols required to manage and event in the pandemic bearing in mind that there is still, according to health

authorities, the threat of a second wave of infection. It has become imperative to invest in acquiring and training staff in the use of thermal scanners and other recommended devices. Also on that list are portable hand washing units, mobile decontamination chambers and other onsite kit and equipment that may be necessary to keep everyone safe and comfortable. In addition, there needs to be some proactive preparation to assist authorities in the event that contact tracing may be required from a particular event. Operators must also task their creativity in space management and decoration. While maintaining social distancing, the sitting arrangement must seat fewer people on the table without attendees feeling distant and disconnected. Seated dining may be safer and preferred now to buffet and cocktail. Where possible pre-packed and a boxed meal should be encouraged. Conclusion The biggest challenge will be financial engineering to address the huge deficit that about half a year of no activity has inflicted on the budget of players in the industry. New players and aspiring entrants should not be discouraged. With a decent network, hard work and grit, you can make your mark At the core of the industry are creativity, resilience, planning and crisis management – it is time to deploy these strengths and values to respond to this unforeseen event.

Guardians of Congo's gorillas unbowed

unbowed as ambushed colleague is buried GOMA, Congo (Reuters) - A line of Congolese park rangers raised their guns in salute on Monday as the coffin bearing their colleague Burhani Abdou Surumwe, a 30-year-old father of four, was buried in the black volcanic soil of a Muslim cemetery outside Goma. Abdou was one of six rangers killed on Sunday in an ambush in Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park, a sanctuary for endangered mountain gorillas that is

In April, a dozen of their number from the Congo Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) were killed by suspected Hutu militiamen. 'God Is Challenging Us to Not Idolize' America and Politics, Lecrae Urges

PHOTO: GOOGLE

Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae asserted in a new social media post that the “idolization” of government and politics is at the root of multiple problems within the church. “I believe God is challenging us to not idolize the empire,” Lecrae, a two-time Grammy winner, wrote in a post on Instagram. Lecrae posted the comments the same day a mob stormed the U.S. capitol building in a protest

that left at least five dead, including a law enforcement officer. The next day, Lecrae expanded on his thoughts in an 11-minute Instagram video. Too many Christians, he said, are looking to politics and government as their “provider” and their “hope”. Using language from history, he called government and politics the “empire.”

you find yourself with an idol that's never going to live up to the expectations that you need it to live up to,” Lecrae said. “You find yourself on the wrong side of eternal history.” Christ’s kingdom, he said, “will have a King who will righteously rule.” But the earthly “empire is gonna fade away.”

Politics, he said, has led too many Christians to abandon Jesus’ commandment to love.

“There's nothing wrong with a nation, but when you look to a nation to be your hope,

“And I think a lot of people are caught up in the empire right now,” he said. “And this

“More than anything, y'all have got to learn how to love each other. Y'all are

letting the empire divide y'all, when your faith journey is supposed to inform you. Y'all are letting the empire divide y'all and not [allowing] y'all to see each other as brothers and sisters, but [leading] y'all to see each other as ‘them’ versus ‘us.’ … Love does have power and you really can push through a lot of the chaos and the craziness that we're seeing right now.”Of the two parties, he said, “Democrats versus

Republicans – y'all both Americans. This ain't two different countries. And that's what I think a lot of people are aiming for is for it to be to different countries.” Lecrae referenced Satan’s temptation of Jesus. “Satan came to Christ and said, 'Hey listen. If you bow down and worship me right now, I'll give You all the kingdoms on earth' ...

Basically, what he's saying is 'you can rule – you can rule right now and you can bring the type of rulership that you want to bring on Earth right now, if you just bow down and worship Me.' Folks, a lot of y'all are believing that if you bow down and worship your politician or your political party, that you will have the type of rule that only Christ can bring. That's crazy.” He also encouraged

people to have friends who have different political perspectives. “I have some friends who have political views that I don't agree with, but it's all good, because we both love the Lord,” he said. “We gonna spend eternity with each other, so we try to navigate that and process that together.”

Africa’s commonst ailment: Malaria. OLUWAROTIMI DESIRE

Our continent, Africa, tends to be the most affected in the world with the ailment called malaria. A few numbers of factors have contributed to this and they are probably still contributing but not out of human control. It is sad to know that malaria still kills despite the development in the health sector of this present time. Malaria, not COVID. I believe it is our (Africans) negligence that has made us continue to wallow in problems we should have been freed from long ago as we seem to be satisfied with curing the infection instead of preventing it. My take about all of this is that we should try eliminating malaria instead of getting ourselves adapted to just receiving treatment after being infected. Do you think it's possible? Well, I think it is. Malaria is a very serious ailment spread through parasites and it's capable of killing its victims but thankfully, the development in our health sector has helped so much by reducing the number of malaria-caused

deaths yearly. Even though by now, I think we could have stopped malaria from killing anyone but it's never too late anyways to start the journey of living malaria-free. Plasmodium parasites are always responsible for all malaria cases. Our warm weather climate in Africa is one of the factors responsible for the persistence of malaria and this is because the parasite grows faster in warm weather climates. The parasites are spread by the female anopheles mosquito but the question is HOW? Mosquitoes do not create the plasmodium parasites instead they are carriers of this deadly parasite and the do the job of spreading it. Mosquitoes depend on the human blood for reproduction and so they find means of sucking but if eventually, they come in contact with a malaria-infected individual, they suck blood along with the parasites. When the mosquitoes carrying Plasmodium pierces a malaria-free individual, such a person gets infected and the

journey to knock down the infected begins. Once the parasites gain access to the body, they make their way to the liver for multiplication after which they invade the red blood cells that carry oxygen to destroy it. Since mosquitoes do not create the plasmodium parasites, here comes my reason for saying that malaria can be eradicated. Although, easier said than done, looking back at the malaria death record of the continent makes it all scary but step by step we can achieve our desired goal of eradicating malaria. STEPS TO ERADICATE MALARIA. 1. Treatment after infection. This entails the intake of drugs after being infected by the parasite. Drugs like quinine, artemisinin and many others are used to combat plasmodium parasites in the bloodstream but as time passes by, these parasites become resistant to antimalarial drugs and there would be a need to create

new drugs. 2. Killing parasites inside mosquitoes. This method of killing plasmodium parasites inside mosquitoes seems to be the most preferable. Artificially modified mosquitoes are bred to fight other mosquitoes that are carriers of the plasmodium parasites. Countries like Singapore made use of this method to combat malaria. 3. Stopping transmission. Another step to eradicating malaria is preventing mosquito bites. If there are no mosquito bites, this equally means there would be no transmission of the plasmodium parasites. Amongst several methods, mosquito bites can be prevented by the use of mosquito nets and insecticides. You can help stop the spread of malaria in your little way by paying heed to the above-mentioned steps. Visit a medical centre for treatment if infected and make use of mosquito nets and insecticides to bring a halt to the transmission of plasmodium parasites.

How to gain muscle mass fast for weight lifting lovers CASMIRE OKEDINACHI

HOW TO GAIN MUSCLE MASS FAST (FOR WEIGHT LIFTING LOVERS)

next level.

These tips will have you looking like the Hulk in no time flat!

If you’re looking to gain weight and muscle mass, one of the best tips we can provide is: eat more. It’s as simple as that. If the amount of calories you consume exceeds the amount of calories you burn in a day, you’ll put on weight. However, just eating for bulk won’t quite get you to where you want to be. You need to be eating the right foods at the right times. Lean protein is key, as well as healthy fats and complex carbs.

Gaining muscle mass is easier said than done. You can train hard the gym, put in a solid effort to sculpt your eating habits, but let’s face it – after the initial period of muscle growth that occurs when you first start training, almost everyone hits a plateau at some point or another. So, we’re here to help you shove past that plateau and take your training to the

1. HOW TO GAIN WEIGHT?

2. WHAT AND HOW MUCH TO EAT? MUSCLE BUILDING NUTRITION & SUPPLEMENTS A. PROTEIN The key nutrient which builds all human tissues, including muscle. Our bodies don’t store protein, therefore in times of need tissues can be broken down to protein and then to amino acids, which can be used elsewhere – that’s when we talk about catabolism. It happens all the time, casting a shadow over your gains, hence it’s very important to tip the scales to-

wards anabolism and supply your body with protein every 2-3 hours. That will ensure a steady intake of amino acids needed to over-build the muscle damage caused by weight training. It’s worth noting that weight lifting and greater muscle mass, increases the demand for this nutrient (and all the others). However, there is little evidence that intakes of over 2g per 1kg of body weight lead to more muscle growth. So if your body weight is 70kg (150lbs) you should be aiming for 140g of protein – the equivalent of over 1.5 pounds of chicken breast a day! Fortunate-

Health & Wellness ly, there are supplements which can help you get all the protein you need without being kitchen-bound. Two scoops of Impact Whey Protein are probably the most cost-effective 40 grams of protein you can get in a few sips. Good sources of protein: eggs, fish, cheese, beef, chicken, turkey and other meats. B. CARBOHYDRATES Body’s preferred source of energy, bound in the muscle as glycogen explaining the muscle-fullness you got the other day after eating few beagles. Carbohydrates have got a bad name for themselves as having too many of them too often leads to elevated insulin levels. This storage hormone stops fat oxidation and packs both the muscle and fat cells with whatever you ate. It’s a double-edged sword – used wisely carbohydrate consumption leads to epic muscle growth, used not-so-wisely leads to epic fatness. Nevertheless, carbs are a must if you want to gain muscle! If you put on fat easily you should have most of your carbs around your workout, as at that time their uptake by muscles is greatly enhanced. It may also be a good idea, not to mix fats with simple carbs (sugars) in one meal, as the rapid insulin spike may promote fat storage. However, if you’re a typical hard gainer, your life will be a breeze with carbs and fats in every meal. Carbohydrate intake is highly individual and can range anywhere from 2g to 6g (or more) per kg of body weight, thus it’s something you will need to experiment with. It’s quite easy to get carbohydrates from solid food; however powdered carbohydrate supplement post-workout may be beneficial in maximising the insulin response due to quicker digestion and absorption. Dextrose

or more digestive-friendly Waxy Maize will do the job without ruining your wallet. Good sources of carbohydrates: rice, potatoes, pasta, wholegrain bread. C. FATS Probably the most neglected but so important nutrient, because of its role as a vitamin solvent, building material for sex hormones (including testosterone) as well as a structural component of all cell membranes, including muscle cells. Without at least 20% of calories in your diet coming from fat (e.g. 45g of fat in a 2000kcal diet) you risk fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies and poor hormonal profile. However not all fat is created equal and the body’s response varies depending on the chemical structure of fatty acids. Chances are that your diet lacks essential omega-3s, which shown to have a range of health benefits including enhanced sports performance. Oily fish such as Salmon contains a lot of omega3s; however, eating fish every day may not be something you’ll easily come to terms with. On top of that, the issue of heavy metal contamination in fatty fish has been raised, hence giving the Salmon a break might be a good idea. Instead, you can supplement your diet with purified and convenient Super Omega 3. Good sources of fats: oils, nuts, fatty fish, eggs. D. VITAMINS AND MINERALS These have a wide range of function in the human body, including; energy and hormone production, cell differentiation and many more. As you probably know, most of the vitamins and minerals in your diet come from fruits and vegetables. However, eating through pounds of protein and carbs may

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12 2021 | PG 39

not leave much gastric (stomach) space for spacious greens. Unfortunately by not having your 5-a-day you miss out much needed in muscle building micronutrients as well as muscle damage repairing anti-oxidants and digestion helping fibre. No to worry though, you can supplement your diet with Myprotein’s blend of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants Alpha Male and getting your hands on 22 powdered super-foods Total Nutri Greens. Good sources of vitamins and minerals: fruits and vegetables.

B. TOTAL GAINER Is more complex formula which contains a blend of fast-acting and slow-acting carbohydrates; Total Gainer beneficial for those who burn through carbs because of high metabolism or very active lifestyle. The mixture of fast to moderately-fast digestible protein ensures a steady supply of amino acids for at least 4 hours after consumption. Furthermore, sources of omega-3s and medium-chain triglycerides take care of your dietary fat demands and boost calorie intake.

3. WHEN YOU CAN’T EAT NO MORE – CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEIGHT GAINER

C. HARD TREME

Hopefully, by now you have some fundamental idea of what to eat to gain size. However, eating can be a chore and even with the best effort and determination you may find yourself in situations where eating a meal may not be possible or convenient. Sometimes, your appetite simply won’t cooperate and you will find yourself dreading thought of another spoonful. If so, it might be a good idea to reach out for a weight gainer, after all drinking your calories is much easier and quicker… but how to choose the right one? A. IMPACT GAINER

WEIGHT

A cost-effective blend of whey protein concentrate and ground oats. Impact Weight Gainer Following the previously mentioned rule of not mixing simple sugars and fats in one meal, this product will be a safe meal substitute even for those prone to gaining body-fat. Highly bio-available protein and complex carbohydrates are just bread and butter in a meal schedule of every fitness freak.

GAINER

EX-

As the name implies, the extreme combination of ingredients. Hard Gainer Extreme, Notably this gainer contains the most rapidly absorbed protein; whey hydrolysate and the slowest digestible protein; calcium caseinate. The blend will keep shuttling muscle-building amino acids into the bloodstream for at least 8 hours after consumption. Hard Gainer Extreme contains only fast-acting carbohydrates which can be endured only by the toughest hard gainers. In the ingredient list, you will also find fibre and, similarly to Total Gainer, extra sources of dietary fat. If your metabolism is on a slow side, you might re-consider other options rather than this calorie-bomb. For Enquiries & Partnership: Call K. Nuno Espirito Santo interview: Wolves boss on Fabio Silva and faith in youth

The two youngest players to start a Premier League game this season both play for Wolves. Six of the club’s starters this season are currently under the age of 21, twice as many as any other team in the competition. It is indicative of the emphasis on young talent at Molineux and should perhaps be remembered when assessing Wolves’ performances this season. It has not been a poor campaign by any means. Indeed, the Premier League table is so condensed that if Wolves win their home games against Everton and West Brom this week then they will be just five points behind current leaders Liverpool by Saturday afternoon. But such are expectations after back-to-back seventh-place finishes that the chatter from those on the outside at least is of a plateau being reached,

With the goal, the Nigerian striker has now scored his 19th league goal of the season from just 18 appearances. Onuachu’s previous best record was when he netted 18 goals in 36 games for Midtjylland during the 2016-17 Danish Superliga campaign.

The game ended 2-1 in the favor of the Kortrijk’s, but Genk retained their second position on the league table. Senegal’s Habib Gueye opened the scoring for Kortrijk in the 23rd minute, before Onuachu leveled up four minutes before halftime.

Habib Gueye scored the winner in the 54 minutes to make sure the maximum points remain at the Guldensporen Stadion. Meanwhile, Onuachu’s compatriot Cyriel Dessers came off the bench as a 60th-minute substitute for Ivory Coast’s Eboue Kouassi.

striker for his professional attitude despite his lack of opportunities this season.Ighalo has struggled for playing time this season and last featured for the club in the champions league defeat home to PSG.

his absence from the first team for a long time.

“Odion, it’s special for him against Watford, he will be involved, he’s in the squad, he’s been training really well, he was the top scorer in round robin we just finished,”Solskjaer told a news conference on Friday.

“This season he’s not had as many opportunities and not let himself down as a professional and a human being. He’s always a positive influence in the dressing room. Hopefully, I don’t need to put him on that we need goals, but hopefully he can join in.” he said.

The Norwegian added that Ighalo remain a good striker, despite

“He’s not lost any of his quality, it’s been difficult for him to be out of the squad as many times because he did really well up until the summer.

Bayo Omoboriowo Bayo Omoboriowo is a Nigerian freelance photographer who has a passion for development within the country. His works have been widely published and remain one of the most used materials on social media platforms locally. For his series on Nigerian Unsung Heroines, which was featured recently on CNN, he is on a mission to celebrate exceptional people contributing to the development of Nigeria. He has produced work for Sahara Energy, Malaria No More UK, USAID, Department for International Development (DFID), African University of Creative Arts, amongst other initiatives. Omoboriowo lives and works in Lagos.

Bayo Omoboriowo’s series features images of local manufacturers of Red Gold (palm oil) whom the government supports and promotes in an effort to gradually re-build an industry largely neglected over the years. As in the case of many food producing nations, Nigeria has a highly diversified agro-ecological potential, which makes possible the production of a wide range of agricultural products, however its agricultural potential remains underutilised. In the 1960s before the discovery of black gold (crude oil) in the 1970s, Nigerians invested much into agriculture and was the largest exporter of palm oil in the world. Since the discovery of oil, the vehicle of production for palm oil has slowly decelerated to minimum. Today, crude oil accounts for about 90% of the country’s gross earnings. A reality which, over the years has pushed agriculture to the background.

There’s always a drawing board

DRIFTING and everyone’s got their pastel. DAMILARE OJO What thrills me all the time is how beautifully we sketch and shade. Oh yeah! We pour out our emotions, fantasies and yearnings that it feels like we have the perfect picture staring us in the face. Over time, it appears like things were modified. The passion and ambition vanish in thin air, and then you are back to square one. At some point in our lives, we map out stuff whether or not it will go as planned, we believe we’d follow through. But we fail to ask ourselves if we are truly prepared to take off. Although there are unforeseen circumstances, we pose as an obstruction to the consummation of our goals. How? We wiggle from the initial plan. Yeah, “the initial plan” as declared by Romoke. My dad observed how sold out I was to the school at age 10. The truth is I loved how imagined I was a Bible character.
