And although the staircase has been transformed with a designer glass balustrade the original handrails have been restored and are still in use.

Inside, a magnificent Austrian Strauss crystal chandelier – 6ft long with 32 lamps – has been professionally cleaned and rehung in its original position above the Grand Foyer, where polished plaster panels have also been refurbished.

There’s also a bell hanging beneath a window’s eaves, once used to call gardeners and chauffeurs to the house.

Here are a few of the original documents found during the renovation of Millfield House belonging to Herbert Chamen... set to take centre stage in Millfield House’s Grand foyer.

But many of the original features have been thoroughly restored, such as the terracotta bricks and beautiful stone Goddess head and garland in the gable above the impressive oak front door, now returned to her former glory.

A carved stone sundial above the architrave of a side door that once led to a rose garden and orchard remains and, set to Greenwich Mean Time, it’s still correct six months of the year.

The result is a 19th century mansion that has been repurposed to create 10 luxury apartments that exceed expectations and look out onto a terrace and lawns with 20 acres of grounds.

Master bricklayers have been employed to work on repairing Millfield House, in particular restoring the tall chimneys and decorative brickwork so prevalent in the late Victorian era.

Millfield’s former owners created the template for Millfield Park as we see it today. Justice of the Peace Charles Matthews, with connections to Ind Coope brewery, had the Dutch gabled house built in 1886 and even wealthier Herbert Chamen of the Stock Exchange moved his family into the house in 1910. There’s a commemorative window to him and his wife in nearby St Paul’s Church.

When Millfield was first built its layout included a billiard room, smoking room and dining room on the ground floor, eight bedrooms plus the master bedroom and upstairs sitting room on the first floor, with servants’ rooms on the second floor.

Now the carefully renovated Millfield House has 10 generously proportioned and individually designed one and two-bedroom mansion apartments over those three floors.

Reimagined to exceed current building regulations, they have fire proof doors, individual sprinkler systems, sound proof flooring and 24/7monitored CCTV with an intercom entrance system. Most have large sash windows that fill them with light, while the upper storey apartments have views for miles, despite being just three miles from Brentwood town centre. WHAT 'S YOUR CHOSEN DE S TINATION? The call of the sea is strong in Essex – there’s more than 350 miles of coast. Head up the A12 and you’re in reach of kiss-me-quick sandy beaches, maze-like mud flats and isolated islands. Mersea is accessible by a tidal causeway that’s flooded twice a day, so timing is crucial, but once you’re there you can swim from the sand and shingle beaches, sail in the Blackwater and Colne estuaries or slurp down a couple of its famous oysters. Shellfish and seafood shacks The West Mersea Oyster Bar and The Company Shed are highly recommended. Or, you could jump on a plane from Stansted to Ibiza. Your choice.

G O I N TO T H E WO O D S Thorndon Country Park is a 500-acre playground where walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wildlife lovers can explore ancient woodland, open meadows and ponds. It has marked walks, bridle paths, orienteering courses and even a Gruffalo Trail – a 45-minute journey into the “Deep Dark Wood” in search of carved animals from the children’s book. The Gruffalo Trail starts near the Thorndon North entrance where there’s a Countryside Centre with a café as well as Childerditch pond – a stop-off for migrating birds. Thorndon South has open parkland with views of the Thames estuary to Canary Wharf and walks through woodland including Octagan Plantation with specimen trees planted in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Television’s TOWIE – The Only Way Is Essex – still attracts fans hoping to spot the reality show’s stars. But Brentwood has always been home to famous faces – from West Ham footballers and Essex County cricketers to singers such as Pixie Lott.

After a hard week’s work, relax and unwind in the countryside around Millfield Park. Just three miles down the road is Weald Country Park with cycle paths and woodland trails including the 2km Stick Man Play Trail with climbing frames slides and swings for children – and even a giant swan’s nest. You can fish in the lake with a daily permit, picnic in the open spaces or get a cup of tea from the visitor centre café. The woodland here is 700 years old and originally a medieval deer park. You can still see deer in the deer enclosure and sometimes herons, ducks and even peacocks.

M A R K E T A market town since the 13th century, Brentwood has Friday and Saturday weekly markets along its wide high street, selling everything from plants and clothes to artisan bread. Crown Street also has regular weekend events with art and crafts stalls.

S H O P S Brentwood’s handsome high street and Baytree Shopping Centre have many well-known chain shops but there are some interesting independent boutiques too. Wander down Crown Street and you’ll find the Chicken & Frog Bookshop, French Quarter for gifts and The Larder food shop.

A F I E L D It’s only 30 miles from Brentwood to Piccadilly Circus but the noise and stress of the capital could be a million miles away when you immerse yourself in the countryside here. There are two Sites of Special Scientific Interest and nine Local Wildlife Sites within the borough; and Brentwood is unusual in Essex for having so much woodland – a legacy of the medieval deer parks and hunting grounds used by royalty and nobility. Brentwood Cycle Network has maps of traffic-free cycling routes within the borough and there are dozens of signposted walks through the area’s country parks.

Essex has a number of restaurants within driving distance of Millfield Park listed in the Michelin Guide. The nearest is Haywards, 10 miles away in Epping, set in old stables and serving modern British cuisine.

Italian restaurant Figo, in the High Street, serves knockout cocktails and authentic Italian cuisine while Vault, in a converted bank near Shenfield station, has VIP booths and Friday and Saturday night parties with DJs and dancing.

Galvin Green Man is in a 14th century pub on the River Chelmer at Great Waltham, just north of Chelmsford, and serves traditional British food in its modern barn extension and riverside garden.

But gastro pub The Rose Shenfield is a real treat. The old coaching inn has been beautifully renovated to reveal its old wood beams. Open for lunch and dinner it has Sunday roasts as well as special event menus.
