THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY PRESENTS MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR. The Man & Woman of the Year campaign consists of a select group of individuals, from different locations and walks of life, coming together for a greater purpose: curing cancer. Candidates in this philanthropic competition form powerful fundraising teams to help them find innovative ways of fueling The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) goal to end blood cancer. With their teammates behind them, this exceptional group competes in honor of two local blood cancer survivors for the prestigious title of Man or Woman of the Year. We are one family. Connected by blood. Driven to find cures.
THANK YOU TO OUR LEADING SPONSORS
WELCOME TO THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY’S 2021 MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR Greetings, On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), welcome to the Grand Finale of the Silicon Valley Man & Woman of the Year campaign. While we may be gathering in a virtual format, we are delighted you have joined us. There is no doubt that this year’s campaign has felt a little bit different than in years past. For that reason, I want to personally thank and congratulate each candidate and team member on their fundraising. On behalf of the Northern CA Board of Trustees, Leadership Team and staff, we cannot express our gratitude enough to our candidates for going above and beyond to ensure we move our mission forward. We are beyond grateful. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer, funding breakthrough research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures, and providing support and advocacy for patients. Over the last 10 weeks, our candidates, team members, family and cheerleaders have learned that they are unstoppable in their quest to cure blood cancers. The critical funds raised through Man & Woman of the Year ARE making an impact. You ARE saving lives by supporting us tonight. Thank you! 70 years of fighting blood cancers has led us to a game-changing belief - Beating Cancer is in Our Blood. In 2020, despite everything happening around us, 17 blood cancer treatment options approved by the FDA – and 14 of those were funded by LLS, thanks to incredible volunteers and donors like you. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our amazing Leadership Team. Thank you for hard work and dedication. We are so grateful to our new and longstanding volunteers for their support. I hope you enjoy tonight’s program. Specifically, I encourage you to join us as we celebrate our Girl of the Year, Graysen and our Boy of the Year, Kabir, as we pay tribute to their blood cancer journey. Graysen & Kabir, along with all our patients, gives us a reason to never give up in our pursuit of finding cures for all blood cancers. Thank you for joining this fight. Best of luck to all of our 2021 candidates! Sincerely,
Renée Croteau
Executive Director Northern California Region

MEET OUR BOY OF THE YEAR
Kabir Taunk PH+ Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
In April of 2017, Kabir Taunk was diagnosed with PH+ Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. His chemotherapy was very intense and included being inpatient for ten months. It was a tough 2 years of treatment and maintenance that was finished in May 2019. Sadly, just a few months later, in July 2019, he relapsed. After starting chemotherapy to get back into remission, his family left home for a clinical trial at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia so he could receive humanized CAR-T cells. After returning home, Kabir started feeling much better and regained much of his strength. Unfortunately, in July of 2020 Kabir had another relapse. With all frontline and trial treatments exhausted, the only option left was to receive a bone marrow transplant. Without a perfect match, his treatment team turned to his brother Ayaan for a haploidentical transplant. While the transplant was successful, Kabir continues to suffer long term side effects from some of the treatments. Even with the side effects, Kabir’s family knows that that some of the treatments that have saved his life would not have even been possible as little as a decade and a half ago. Kabir’s family knows that private funding has led to huge strides in pediatric cancer care. While life calls on Kabir to be a warrior, he has remained a very giving and loving person. Cancer could not take away his kindness. His favorite quote is “You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!”
MEET OUR GIRL OF THE YEAR
Graysen Hooper B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Graysen was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia shortly before turning 2, and was hospitalized immediately due to her counts. In the days that followed, her family learned more about cancer and Leukemia than they ever wanted to. They were thrust into a situation of making important decisions while still in shock. While their doctors were optimistic about her treatment plan, they prepared her family for a long, taxing journey. Graysen finished her 2 ½ years of grueling treatment in March of 2021, weeks before our campaign kicked off. Throughout her treatment, she handled each and every day of her journey with grace, bravery, patience and poise. Even the days when her family knew she must be feeling awful -she never complained. She never asked why her. She’s not even old enough to understand that this isn’t what everyone has to do. She just accepted it. Graysen’s family knows that advancements in treatment for B-cell ALL have been revolutionized over the last few decades thanks to researchers and those that provide the funding to LLS to make it happen. Graysen is now a four-year-old who loves dancing, singing, and make her little sister laugh.

2021 Man & Woman of the Year Candidates
Avi Gingold LegalShield Avi Gingold is a small business & employee benefits specialist for LegalShield and chose to run as a candidate to honor his mother that he lost 4 years ago to cancer, as well as other friends & family who have battled the disease. Anyone who knows Avi would describe him as someone who loves to help others, is loyal and has great integrity. It is no surprise that raising an amazing family is the accomplishment that he is most proud of. Not too many know that Avi was a trumpet player for many years, and met his wife while in a band.
Aprajita Mathur Guardant Health Aprajita Mathur is an Associate Director in bioinformatics software engineering for Guardant Health. As a parent, she was shocked to learn about the statistics associated with Pediatric cancer, and accepted the nomination because she wanted to help raise awareness and support better outcomes for children. After 10+ years in the field of bioinformatics, her parents would tell people that she worked in IT, because it’s easier to explain. After watching a conference presentation she gave, they understood her real profession and could finally explain it. Seeing the spark in their eye, when they explained it, is something she is most proud of. Those that know and love Aprajita would describe her as outgoing, joyful and a little bit crazy.
Arthur Ng Silicon Valley Bank Arthur Ng is the Director of Relationship Management for Silicon Valley Bank, and accepted the nomination to run for Man of the Year in honor of his daughter Ashley, who is an ALL survivor. Arthur gathered a team of friends and family to raise as much money as they could, because he knows how important research funds are to work towards better treatment options with less harmful side effects. Arthur’s friends would describe him as considerate and easy going, but also competitive when it comes to sports and raising funds for cancer. A little known fact about Arthur that many people don’t know is that he collected baseball cards when he was a kid, and still has 20,000 in his collection!
Purvi Patel UberZen Interiors Purvi Patel is the owner of UberZen Interiors, and has been volunteering with LLS since 2017, when her daughter was part of the Students of the Year campaign. During that time, she had the opportunity to meet some brave children who were fighting cancer. That, along with watching several family members battle and lose their lives to cancer, gave her the inspiration to stay involved. It is no surprise that those who know Purvi would describe her as compassionate. In addition to doing good in the world, Purvi is most proud of going back to school in her mid 30’s, changing careers and becoming an interior designer with her own successful company.
Every 3 minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with blood cancer.
