National Certificate of Educational Achievement The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) offered by Marcellin College at three different Levels is one of the certificates available on the National Qualifications Framework. In general, a Year 11 student will commence work towards the Level One Certificate, a Year 12 student will be striving to achieve the Level Two Certificate, and a Year 13 student will be aiming to gain both the Level Three Certificate and University Entrance.
NCEA Level One is awarded to any student who gains: ● at least 80 credits from any Level Achievement and/or Unit Standards ● of these 80 credits ○ at least 10 Literacy credits and ○ at least 10 Numeracy credits
Literacy and Numeracy credits are available through designated Achievement Standards in many subjects.
NCEA Level Two is also awarded for 80 or more credits. It is given to any student who gains:
● At least 60 credits from Level 2 (or higher) Achievement and/or Unit Standards and ● already has gained 20 credits at Level 1. The Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirements must also be met.
NCEA Level Three is also awarded for 80 or more credits. It is awarded to any student who gains:
● at least 60 credits from Level 3 (or higher) Achievement and/or Unit Standards and ● has already gained
20 credits at Level Two.
The Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirements must also be met.

NCEA Endorsement - Recognising High Achievement When students perform consistently at Merit and Excellence, their results can be ‘Endorsed’ to show that high achievement. Endorsements can occur at the Certificate OR individual Course (subject) level.
Certificate Endorsement: ● For NCEA Certificate endorsed with Excellence - a student must gain 50 credits at Excellence at the level of the certificate or above. So, if a student has 50 Level 1 credits at Excellence they may have their Level 1 certificate endorsed with Excellence. ● For NCEA Certificate endorsed with Merit - a student must gain Merit (or Merit and Excellence) at the level of the certificate or above.

Course Endorsement: Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course. Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:
14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence in ONE course,

Vocational Pathways is an award that can be achieved in addition to the NCEA qualification. This award helps students see how their learning in courses (NCEA Achievement and/or Unit Standards) is valued and used in the real world. To achieve the Vocational Pathways Award, a learner must:

Level 2 credits from Sector-Related Standards for the SAME sector.
A learner can achieve MORE THAN ONE Vocational Pathways Award. Vocational Pathways is broken down into six Industries (categories of work). Each Industry has a code that is mapped to the courses offered at Marcellin College - this means, each course will show you exactly which Standards are linked to each Industry. This is important for planning your Career Pathway as you progress to Years 12 and 13.

University Entrance (UE) is another award that can be achieved in addition to the NCEA qualification. UE is also the MINIMUM REQUIREMENT needed to attend a University in New Zealand. To achieve the University Entrance award, a learner must:
14 credits in three University Entrance approved courses at Level 3 (see table below)

10 Literacy credits at Level 2 OR above made up of: 5 Credits in Reading AND 5 Credits in Writing AND 10 Numeracy credits at Level 1 OR above
