CUP READY: All is ready for the Kilmore Cup this Sunday (November 25). Fashions on the Field sponsor, Georgina Clydesdale of Georgina and Co took time out to spend a few moments with the Jodie Thomson trained All Day Every Day one of the starters in the feature packed nine race field that will celebrate 156 years of Cup days at Kilmore. The day kicks off with the North Central Review Three-Years-Old Maiden Plate.

All set for the cup by “Pegs” KILMORE Racing Club is all set for a bumper Kilmore Cup this Sunday (November 25) with the feature thoroughbred race meeting reaching an historic 156 years. Run over a testing mile, the race has been won by some of the greats of thoroughbred racing. Eastern Classic, Gai Waterhouse, Peter Moody, Harry White and Damian Oliver are just a few of the champions to have their name engraved on the coveted Kilmore Cup. Kilmore Racing CEO Ben Murphy, said that the track and surrounds have never looked better.

“Being a Listed race worth $151,000, trainers are attracted to the 1600-metre event and history shows the race attracts a smart field and with the forecast a bit kinder to us this year (last year’s Cup was abandoned), it’s shaping up for a big day,” Murphy said. “The Turf Cup has been doused in tradition over the Club’s 156-year history and we have had some of the biggest names in racing take the honours on the day. There will be a lot of action over the nine race card,” Mr Murphy said. The day will commence with the North Central Review Maiden Plate

and punters will find there is plenty to cheer about as the card leads up to the feature race. There will also be plenty of excitement off the field. Kilmore Cup day traditionally has a lot on offer for families with plenty of free kids activities and free entertainment throughout the venue. Broadford’s Georgina and Co will again sponsor Fashions on the Field. This year the event boasts over $12,500 in prizes. Categories include best dressed lady, best dressed local lady, best dressed gent, best dress junior racegoer and best dressed mini racegoer.

CNSMILES complete natural smiles

Mr Murphy added that the New Zealanders are no strangers to Kilmore. In September 1978 the New Zealand-bred Waitangirua, trained by Flemington and Kilmore horseman Terry Millard and ridden by Caulfield Cup-winning jockey, John Stocker, was victorious. The 1963 cup saw the Brian Courtney trained Tobacco Leaf a comfortable winner of this year. The 1989 cup again saw the Kiwis victorious when the New Zealand-bred Spacecraft took out that year’s cup. Trained at Caulfield by Geoff Murphy, and ridden by former Kiwi hoop Gary Willets, the galloper was part-owned by TV personality Bert Newton.

By 2008 the Kiwis were making quite a habit of taking the honours at Kilmore when the New Zealand galloper Sand Sweeper led all the way. Trained by John Wheeler and ridden by Vlad Duric, the gelding defeated the Lee Hope-trained and locally-owned Tears ‘n’ Triumph. Courtesy buses will be running between the track and Kilmore East Station - contact the Club for more details. Dining packages for the day have nearly all sold out with a few spaces in the popular alfresco area to fill. For bookings or for further enquiries call Kilmore Racing on 5783 0700.

Council is offering a 20 per cent discount on each pass purchased before Monday, November 26. The early bird passes will get adults entry for $61.60 for the summer, child/concession/ seniors tickets for $46.20 and a whole family of two adults and three children can enjoy the entire outdoor pool season for $110.40. With not long to go until the outdoor pools open on Saturday, December 1. Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Rhonda Sanderson said the region’s pools were a great way to cool off and have fun. “Mitchell Shire has state-of-the-art facilities and it is fantastic we can open up our pools to residents through summer. It is a great way to stay happy and healthy,” she said. “The pools are a great way to have fun and enjoy cooling down with friends without having to venture too far from home. Our staff are working hard each week to prepare for the pool season, and I thank them for their hard work. We are looking forward to kicking the season off.” Council’s outdoor pools will be open from December 1 on days when the forecast temperature is 26 degrees or above. The pools are closed on Christmas Day. The Wallan Adventure Playground and Splash Park at Hadfield Park in Wallan is free to use and water is turned on from 10am to 8pm through summer. Surprises in store: the staff at Woolworth’s supermarket in Wallan took time out to celebrate their new look store last week. The Wellington Square store has undergone significant upgrades in recent weeks.

Mitchell Shire’s 16 day stand for gender equality MITCHELL Shire Council will put its hand up for 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, a global campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and the severe impacts it has on our community. The campaign will begin on Sunday, November 25 as part of White Ribbon Day - a global movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women. Mitchell Shire has a higher rate of family violence than other councils located in and around Melbourne.

The family violence rate is almost double the Victorian average. Council will shine a light on the issues around gender violence, working with key stakeholders, agencies and community to ignite change through advocacy. Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Rhonda Sanderson said the 16 Days of Activism campaign was an important step toward achieving equality for all. Cr Sanderson added that Mitchell Shire is committed to ensuring that people of all genders are actively

supported to access and enjoy the same rights, resources and opportunities within the region through the municipality’s social justice framework. “We are taking action against gender violence to unite our community together, so everyone can feel safe in Mitchell Shire,” she said. “We hope to inspire positive change in the long-term through this campaign which begins on White Ribbon Day. If we begin moving in the same direction, we can turn things around and get better.

“Gender equality is achieved when people of all genders are able to access and enjoy the same rewards, resources and opportunities regardless of whether they are a woman or a man.” Local government has a key role to play in creating a socially just, inclusive and sustainable community. The Mitchell Shire Council Social Justice Framework 2017-2021 affirms council’s human rights obligations under the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act and actions council’s mission

‘working with our communities to build a great quality of life’. The Framework was developed through extensive research and consultation with key stakeholders. Six social justice principles underpin the framework–participation, advocacy, empowerment, equity, access and diversity. The Mitchell Shire 16 Days of Activism campaign will run from Sunday, November 25 until Monday, December 10. For more information, visit council’s website or social media channels.

Learning the trade: Mitchell Shire CEO David Turnbull discusses the facility operations with Wallan resource and recovery centre attendant, Steve Hume.

Learn about the home-sharing sector

CEO a member of the resource recovery team for a day MITCHELL Shire CEO, David Turnbull, and Development and Infrastructure Director, Mike McIntosh, traded in their suits and ties for safety gear to work at the Wallan resource recovery centre recently. As part of the senior leadership team’s Walk in My Shoes program, the pair worked alongside resource centre staff and community members to learn more about the service. As the region continues to grow, Mr Turnbull said waste management would continue to be one of council’s largest services including resource recovery centre operations, kerbside collection, landfill management and rehabilitation, planning for growth and education. “With a budget this year of $4.5 million, major industry changes underway and a growing community, it is important for our senior leadership team to better understand the service and the way that the community use it,” Mr Turnbull said. “Planning to deliver waste and resource recovery services is one of the biggest challenges this municipality will face as we grow. It is also a frontline customer service area with everyone in our community relying on it in one way or another.” Mr Turnbull thanked the staff and customers for welcoming him on-site and telling him about their experiences and ideas.

“I was able to learn more about how our waste is processed, some of the challenges the team in Wallan face daily and their ideas for making things run more efficiently for staff and for customers. I am full of admiration for the staff who, on a daily basis, interact with cross-sections of our community in a sensitive and professional manner. “The time I spent at the gate also gave me a chance to speak to residents as they came in and see how technology is helping to make things quicker and easier for them.” “The staff at Mitchell Shire are extremely dedicated to their jobs and to working together to get the best outcomes for the community as we continue to strive for service excellence,” he added. “The Walk in My Shoes Program is an initiative we are rolling out across the organisation to help staff from different teams to better understand the many services we provide. I was very pleased to be able to participate and spend some time with our staff and customers on the front line and learn more about this important service.” The initiative was suggested by staff as part of discussions on ways to improve customer service.

Good governance coming to Whittlesea CLUBS and volunteer organisations are the lifeblood of the community. They bring us together, they change lives and bring out the best in the places we live. But the challenges of being on the board of these essential organisations are getting more complex by the day. Whittlesea Community Connections is among four community organisations to take part in a good governance test pilot over the next three years. Supported by a Federal Government grant, the test aims to gather more evidence of the contribution that better governance of small and medium community organisations can make to strong and resilient communities. Mentors are connected to a community of practice for their own professional development, with each host coordinating their own volunteer mentors to ensure that the right fit for their community and groups. The program seeks leaders to mentor local community organisations, and strengthen good governance principles over a 12 month timeframe. Mentors support a committee of

management to develop areas of governance. The focus of the program is on mentoring rather than training, with mentors being a source of information and support. Mentors have the opportunity to use their skills and knowledge, as well as the information they have gained from the Good Governance training to assist community organisations to build capacity and achieve their goals. Mentors can expect to be matched with an organisation that is able to benefit form a mentor’s knowledge and experience, to work with and receive support from the entire board, not just individual members, to receive opportunities for further self-development and training and to be supported by a dedicated program coordinator, based at Whittlesea community connections, with regular contact If you would like to be a Mentor please contact Alistair, Program Coordinator of Good Governance Mentors Horsham on 0401 857 441 or [email protected].

Tree safety prompts removal works

MITCHELL Shire Council is working on an essential tree safety program to clean up debris in the road reserve and address dangerous storm-damaged trees – but not without a touch of controversy. Clonbinane resident, Lizette Snaith had expressed her concerns regarding the removal of trees that had survived Black Saturday. Ms Snaith met with Greens candidate for Euroa, Keppel Cassidy, and arranged for him to inspect the removal works. Many large trees were cut down first and others that are earmarked to be destroyed are smaller and clearly dead. The North Central Review contacted Mitchell Shire Council for comment. We were told that two independent expert arborist audits were conducted after major storms last year and it was determined that more than 300 trees across the municipality would require essential safety works. The works include parts of Clonbinane where the trees had been badly damaged by fire and were further damaged during the storms last year. The trees in question show a high risk of

either the tree or large branches falling on the road with the risk for fatalities. Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Councillor Rhonda Sanderson said the tree contractors would keep as much of the tree as possible for habitat but the safety of residents and visitors is paramount. “We kept many roadside trees after the 2009 fires that might regenerate or that didn’t pose an immediate safety risk and could provide valuable habitat. Unfortunately, particularly around the Clonbinane area, the storms in December 2017 caused further damage and many of these trees now require further works. “Wherever possible, most of the tree structure will be left in place to provide valuable habitat for native wildlife. However, in some cases, the trees have decayed inside or through their roots and will need majority removal,” Cr Sanderson said. The $770,000 storm clean up, audit and subsequent safety works are funded through the National Disaster Funding Assistance. The audit also identified more than 4500 fallen branches requiring removal along the 350 kilometres of road reserve covered.

Armistice show a roaring success THE Mitchell Shire Concert Band Armistice Centenary 1918-2018 show has been rated as a huge success. One of the audience members even wrote to the band’s president, Nigel Divito, after the show. Here are her comments. “Huge congratulations to you and all the band members, plus all the assistants, for the wonderful concert last night at Seymour. “I was a little hesitant about attending as my wonderful maternal grandfather served in Fromelles during WWI. I spent a lot of time with him and grandma and can still remember him sitting me on his skinny legs and teaching me ‘Mademoiselle from Armentieres’. I finally managed to sing a little of the song at the end last night. Thankfully

I took some cloth hankies. “The addition of the humour helped negate the emotion of the memories of the wars. The obvious enjoyment and enthusiasm of the cast was incredible and I believe added to the enjoyment of the audience. “I loved the picture of the war and its impact on the soldiers; something we didn’t learn from the men in my family, all of whom served in both wars. “Thank you again and I look forward to attending many concerts in the future.” The cast, band and crew worked for months to put together the special tribute to the soldiers of WWI and the Armistice. Profits from these shows go to the RSL and Legacy.

Street art in Broadford A MELBOURNE based art studio has been working with Mitchell Shire’s youngest artists to create and develop a mural dedicated to Broadford’s history which will be painted onto the side of the Broadford Corner Store fish and chip shop this week The Streetz Project, run by Mitchell Shire Council in conjunction with Broadford Alternative School, the Department of Justice and Blender Studios, is an early intervention project which hopes to positively engage young artists to curb illegal graffiti practices. The mural was designed by students to celebrate the region’s rich history and will be used to help gener-

ate an artistic portfolio for the students. The $32,000 project was funded through the Community Crime Prevention program and in-kind business donations. Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Rhonda Sanderson said the Streetz Project was a great initiative to generate a positive relationship with the community. “This project is fantastic and is a good way to engage our community and show off some of the work our talented artists can create,” she said. “It is great to see the community come together and engage in a project like this.

The hardworking students will be able to see their work proudly displayed on a wall at a local business. “The Mitchell Shire is committed to fostering positive relationships for our local schools and students to unlock their full potential. I would like to thank the Department of Justice for the help they have provided in establishing this program in the Mitchell Shire.” The Streetz Project recently began classes with the students with the help of Victoria Police and Blender Studios. The mural is expected to be completed by Thursday, November 22.

Police Beat Beware - bogus tradies POLICE are urging residents to be wary of bogus tradespeople after a very unfortunate incident in Broadford recently where an unscrupulous pair took advantage of an elderly couple. The supposed tradies approached the couple offering their services to repair their roof, it was a cash only deal, even driving them to two separate banks to withdraw money. The end result being that the repair works were not done and the supposed tradesmen are now nowhere to be seen. The pair is described as one having a very strong Irish accent and the other was believed to be Southern European,

wearing high visibility vests and driving in a light coloured utility, with a fold up ladder in the rear tray. Unfortunately many people have become victims of these unscrupulous people, in 2017 Consumer Affairs Victoria received 33,000 reports of scams, with $22 million being lost. These fly-by-night tradespeople offer cheap today only deals for work on your home including painting and roof repairs. They use undue pressure to force you to agree to have the work done and to hand over cash up front, with both your cash and the workmen never to be seen again. Don’t be tempted by these cheap deals, you can say no.

Always check the person’s credentials, they must have proof of identity. They must provide written quotes including lists of work to be completed and cooling off periods apply as well. Check out the Consumer Affairs Victoria website for further information www.consumer.vic.com.au

Diesel do Investigations are continuing into what is believed to be the attempted theft of diesel from two tractors left parked in Clydesdale Road, Hilldene, near the intersection with Daisyburn Road. The petrol caps had been tampered with and a window smashed on one of the vehicles in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 11.

Thefts from cars Police are investigating several other thefts from motor cars that occurred either overnight of Sunday, November 11 or the next night. Two vehicles parked in Snodgrass Street, Broadford were broken into overnight on Monday, November 12 and the next morning. Fishing rods were stolen from the rear of a utility and various tools were stolen from the second vehicle. Various power and hand tools were stolen from the rear of a work ute which was parked in the driveway of a Church Street, Kilmore house, sometime overnight of November 11 and 12.

A Waeco car fridge and camping equipment were stolen from a ute parked at a Chapel Street, Kilmore house during the same night. It is believed these offences may be related. The rear number plate was stolen from a vehicle that had been left parked in a car park in Brettoneaux Street, Seymour sometime between Monday, November 12 and Wednesday, November 14. If anyone has any information regarding any criminal activity they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be left anonymously. Broadford Salvos plan for Christmas THIS Christmas, The Salvation Army is encouraging Broadford locals to connect with their community – whether it is through participating in Christmas activities, giving a hand up to someone in need, or reaching out to the Salvos for help. Christmas is one of the hardest times of year for Australians doing it tough, but Broadford Salvation Army Officer Lieutenant Michael Nally says just a small contribution can make a big difference in helping give hope where it’s needed most. “For just $29 you can provide food on the table and a present under the Christmas tree to help give hope to someone in need this Christmas,” Lt Nally said. Close to 95 per cent of all households who access the Salvos emergency services are living in poverty, with 74 per cent experiencing food insecurity and 67 per cent reporting that food affordability is their greatest daily challenge. “At Christmas, the Salvos will serve over 100,000 meals, distribute more than 500,000 gifts and toys and support more than 70,000 families in need. But we can only do this with the support of the Australian public,” Lt. Nally added. If you would like to assist the Broadford Salvos food and gift donations can be dropped off at the Broadford Salvation Army in Powlett Street, but please phone (03) 5784 1635, to arrange a drop off time. On Christmas Day, The Salvation Army is inviting the public to gather to celebrate the hope and joy of Christmas with a special service at the hall in Powlett St from 9.30am, with everyone welcome to attend. “Whether you are by yourself, or with friends and family, Christmas is a time that is best spent together. So join us, so we can share the true spirit of Christmas,” Lt. Nally said. To give hope where it’s needed most this Christmas, donate to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal at salvos.org.au/Christmas or by calling 13 SALVOS (13 72 58). Donations can also be made in person at any Westpac branch or at Salvo Stores

Wet Cup Day kept SES busy LAST week’s Melbourne Cup Day saw Victoria experience intense rainfall resulting in flash flooding across many areas, with the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) receiving more than 480 requests for assistance. Throughout the day, VICSES volunteers remained busy, receiving a total of 232 calls for help due to flooding and 170 for building damage. Unfortunately there were many incidents involving vehicles becoming trapped after driving into floodwater. VICSES volunteers and its emergency service partners were called to the rescue of 18 vehicles from floodwater across 11 locations where four vehicles entered floodwaters with their occupants requiring rescuing after

their vehicle became stranded in floodwater. Data provided by insurance agencies shows that in the seven days after the event, there have been more than 60 motor vehicle claims for vehicles damaged due to floodwaters and over 1160 property claims. VICSES is reminding the public to never drive through floodwater. Roads can be washed away, bridges can be damaged and floodwater may contain sewage and debris. Tim Wiebusch, VICSES Chief Officer said that summer and spring are periods when weather events, can cause flash flooding. “It’s important to never drive, walk or play in floodwater and park your vehicles under cover,” Mr Wiebusch said.

Fitness and fun: the Live Life Get Active program has gained popularity at Wallara Waters since it was introduced in 2016.

Getting fit in Wallara Waters THE Wallara Waters community is getting fit, thanks to a free fitness camp that is run on the estate. Since it started in June 2016, the Live Life Get Active program held at Wallara Waters’ Merri Creek Park has attracted 203 members to its free mix of weekly workout sessions. For women in Wallan, who make up 96 per cent of members, the program is proving vital in beating social isolation and building a local support network. Results from the Live Life Get Active camp at Wallara Waters show members have lost an impressive 123kg and 179cm off their waist-

lines through a mix of cross-training, boxing and yoga sessions. Live Life Get Active master trainer Tim Morgan says the camp is also having a positive influence on people’s social lives. “One of the biggest results we see is the friendships people are making by joining the camps,” Mr Morgan said. “For the majority of the members at Wallara Waters, who are young mums, the camp has provided a social outlet for them. They keep coming back because of the friendships they have made, and the workouts then have a real impact on their lives with better health outcomes.

“The camps are so encouraging, it’s a really non-threatening environment and people are really loving having their workout time outdoors, where they also get a much-needed dose of Vitamin D. “Being free, it enables people who would otherwise not be able to afford a gym membership the chance to access an exercise program, run by professional trainers. You don’t have to have a big fitness budget to get healthy. “Being in a regional area, people can feel quite isolated here, so it’s really important that people connect and we make a point of reaching out to people we haven’t seen in a while and checking in with them.”

LIBERAL Party candidate Meralyn Klein has been disendorsed by her party following claims of an assault and rape threat made in an anti-Muslim video. In the video, published by far-right party the Australian Liberty Alliance, Ms Klein spoke to Australian Liberty Alliance Upper House candidate Avi Yemini about an alleged incident that took place about a decade ago. In the video, Ms Klein said she and her daughter were assaulted by two teenage boys from a neighbouring business. Ms Klein did not describe the background or religion of the alleged attackers, but did say the teenagers ‘were not so happy with two blonde women running their own restaurant’. However words added in post-production said, ‘they were Muslim…’ and ‘#muslimban’. Ms Klein said she was not aware of Mr Yemini’s political affiliation despite Mr Yemini wearing an Australian Liberty Alliance polo shirt and carrying a microphone with the party’s logo. “I actually didn’t notice it. I didn’t even look to be honest,” she said. Late Wednesday night, Ms Klein said her daughters made her aware of the video, after which she contacted Mr Yemini through a ‘friend of a friend’, threatening legal action if he did not take the video down. Ms Klein said the video was taken down Wednesday night before being posted again on Thursday. If Ms Klein is elected, she would be elected as an independent despite appearing as a Liberal candidate on the ballot.

Battling diabetes

A NEW community-based service aims to prevent people living in Mitchell and Murrindindi Shires and the City of Whittlesea, being admitted to hospital because of diabetes. The Diabetes Diversion Partnership Project is funded by Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (EMPHN) and delivered by Nexus Primary Health and partners. It brings health professionals such as GPs, practice managers, nurses, allied health and client engagement staff together to provide coordinated care for patients. The project, led by Nexus Primary Health (Nexus), includes DPV Health, Precedence Health Care and Hume Whittlesea Primary Care Partnership (HWPCP). The project will identify at-risk patients, provide coaching for patients and clinicians, and use Precedence’s cdmNet software platform to link and coordinate diabetes care. The project will create ‘Diabetes Wellness Spaces’ which are informal spaces for

conversations with vulnerable people with diabetes. Nexus Primary Health CEO Suzanne Miller said she is confident this project will see great results for patients. “We know that good chronic disease management needs to involve all the health professionals working together on the same page,” Ms Miller said. In 2012-16, there were 14,369, 2,407 and 1,224 hospital admissions due to diabetes in Whittlesea, Mitchell and Murrindindi respectively (all above average for Melbourne’s east and north-east). Patients can be referred to the service by their GP or Kilmore and Northern hospitals. To find out more about the Diabetes Diversion Partnership Project contact 1300 77 33 52 or visit www.nexusprimaryhealth.org.au. This initiative is funded by the Australian Government under the PHN program.

More funding for houses CITY of Whittlesea neighbourhood houses will share in an extra $50,000 next year as council begins to introduce two more houses into the city. Each of the five current neighbourhood houses, Whittlesea Community House, Mill Park Community House, Lalor Living and Learning Centre, Thomastown Neighbourhood House and Creeds Farm Living and Learning Centre, will receive $10,000 in 2019/20. Meanwhile, the two new neighbourhood houses in Epping and Mernda will gradually receive more funding until they are in line with the existing five. The new houses will receive establishment funding of $10,000 in 2019/20, $20,000 in 2020/21 before being brought in line with $35,281 plus accumulated inflation in 2021/22. Councillor Kris Pavlidis said many people know the houses offer unique engagement with the community. “They are to be applauded and commended for their efforts,” she said. “I think it’s well overdue given the diversity of services they offer.”

Part 3 The rusty trunk HOWEVER, it was the contents of the rusty trunk that eventually revealed some of the details of Charlie’s last months. Most of the items were the receipts of long forgotten family bills, but one tightly folded sheath of papers caught my attention. On opening, the packet contained the four pages of two letters that Charlie had written home. The words were penned on paper headed “For God, King and Empire, The Australian Y.M.C.A.” Unfortunately, all the handwriting was illegible, as the paper and ink was virtually transparent, appearing to have been soaked in an oily substance at some time in the seventy years since the letters had been written. Try as I might, I could make out nothing but the printed heading and the details of Charlie’s unit. The personal computer came along just in time for me to begin assembling the family history in something approaching a professional manner. For all it’s value however, it was not a computer that finally revealed the secret of Charlie’s early death in a military hospital far from the battlefields of the Great War – it was a photocopier! Had I begun my research in more recent times, I would probably have used a scanner in an attempt to copy the pages of Charlie’s letters. This may or may not have revealed his frozen thoughts from long ago, but as I found, quite by accident, the photocopier (with its ability, at that time, to reproduce only a limited range of tones), extracted with precise clarity the written lines from the oily paper. For the first time in many decades, Charlie’s letters could be read as if they had just been penned. The first letter (here transcribed verbatim) is dated ‘Sunday 26th November 1916’ and was written during the voyage from Melbourne aboard the HMAT Ulysses: Dear Dad and all, I am writing a few lines to say I am keeping well, we are now many miles from Australia, we have call in at two ports since we left & we are not allowed to tell you the names of them, the first port we call at we stopped there 4 days & I had a good look round, I sent you a post card of the city so you know it was the first port we call at, we have been having a lovely trip so far, only for two days which we got it very rough, that was two days before we call in at the first port, & the last port we call in at we only stopped there for about 8 hours. I am going to try & get transferred to Bert – that is when we land, we are not allowed to say where we are going, but I suppose you will be able to guess, I will send you a cable as soon as we land. We are getting better food on board now to what we are getting at first, we have any amount of sports on board & concert sports every Wednesday & concerts three time a week. I have met two or three chaps on this boat from Frankston. Well Dad I will write as soon as we land & I will be able to tell you more about the trip as we are not allowed to tell you the names of the ports we have call at. We get plenty of drill on board, so the days don’t seem very long, the first we call at we had three or four route marches through the city & I also met a chap by the name of [il-

legible] at the first port he was the chap that I enlisted with, I met him in the YMCA it was a bit of luck to strike him there as he left Melbourne three or four days before me, but I was only with him for two hours when we had to report back to boat. Well Dad I think I have said all the news that I can think of that the present. Wishing you All a Merry Xmas & a Happy New Year. I remain Your loving son, The second letter was written from the bleak Larkhill Military Camp on Salisbury Plain near Durrington during mid-winter on Saturday 3rd February 1917, it is especially poignant because 16 days later Charlie was dead: Dear Dad and All at Home, Just a few lines to say I am quite well up to the present, I have just come back from leave from London after four days I had a good time but if I have the luck to get another four days leave, I would not spend it in London because it is over run with soldiers, soldiers from all parts of the world, if we want to enjoy ourself it is better to get out into the country, were there is not as many soldiers. They had us on a draft to go to France last week, but we kicked up about it because they were sending us to France without any leave, so they took us off the draft & sent us on our leave to London. We have been in the camp 6 weeks now, & I have not received any letter from home yet only one from Jim, I have received two letters from Bill, & five from Nean up to the present. I am having my photo taken over here so as soon as I get them I will send you one of them, I am not having them taken until tomorrow. I am sending by this mail views of London & I will by the next mail views of Salisbury. I am also sending by this mail some cigars card which I have saved since I have been here they can share them up between themself. It has been terrible cold here lately, it has been snowing & rain & we have been drilling in it without our overcoats. I am going to try to get transferred into the motors transports, next week, we have had a few deaths out of this company, since we have been here, for three weeks. We average one death a week, so you can guess how bad the weather is over here. I don’t think this war will last much longer to what the papers say over here. Just about five miles from here is the (Spreading Chestnut) under which the village blacksmith stands, there is only the blacksmith shop there now. Well Dad & all at Home I think I have said all the news at present hoping this letter will find you all in the best of health as it leaves me at present, I will now close with Love to all at Home. I remain Your Loving Son. So there it is, just two weeks after writing this last letter and having his photograph taken, Charlie died of pneumonia - because he had been drilling during the depths of an English winter without an overcoat. Apparently this was a tactic used by the British Army to ‘toughen up’ colonial troops (in spite of sacrificing one life a week to this policy), but it might also have been payback for the troops having ‘kicked up’ about being sent directly to France without having had any

leave. The graves of one hundred and forty one Australian soldiers can be found in the Durrington cemetery. Charlie’s name is inscribed on his well-tended grave, the Roll of Honour at the Canberra War Memorial and upon an obelisk opposite the Post Office in Broadford where he, Bert and his father had worked as butchers. Although he never fired a shot in anger, he certainly tried to serve God, King, Empire and his Country not once, but twice! POSTSCRIPT - The old shed is no longer there, demolished by the new owner of the house after Auntie Florrie passed away in 1986. Gone too of course, are the rabbit skins, undoubtedly cast aside as having no worth. No worth - except as a sad reminder of the plans of three brothers separated forever from each other and all those they loved - by war and by military indifference.

Broadford students ready to go

Graduated: Teachers, mentors and students from Broadford Secondary College’s Project Ready program. by Jackson Russell STUDENTS at Broadford Secondary College graduated from the Project Ready program on Friday afternoon. Project Ready is a collaborative project between the school, Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network (CRLLEN) and Nestle.

Broadford Secondary College assistant principal Cathy Coppinger said it’s about building resilience and mentoring students. “It’s really around building resilience and offering mentoring to students and try to expose them to a range of opportunities to open their eyes to what’s possible after school or to help them with

their pathway from Year 10 and beyond,” she said. Some of the students in the program were disengaged with school, while others lacked confidence and needed an extra boost. Thursday mornings, students would meet with their teachers and mentors from Nestle to work through group projects, talk about

what they want to do in the future, reflect on their own characteristic, strengths and weaknesses. Students went on excursions to the Nestle factory and Puckapunyal army base, while numerous guest speakers also came to the school. With Nestle’s help, students also engaged in an enterprise project. Nestle

donated a greenhouse and gardening equipment for students to grow vegetables in and develop into a mini business. “They’ll be pumping some of these vegetables back into the foods room in the school but they’re also planning on having a market stall for parents and community members once a week,” Ms

Coppinger said. “I want to extend our thanks to Nestle and the CRLLEN because without their support, this wouldn’t have happened. “These are the sorts of things schools can’t do on their own and having the community into the school is really fantastic for us and we really appreciate it.”

Detectives release CCTV following Mernda incident MERNDA Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have released CCTV following an investigation into an incident in Mernda on Wednesday (November 14). Traffic chaos: There were some teething problems with the installation of Whittlesea’s new traffic lights.

Detectors installed at Wallan Rd

Wallan student stable after collision A TEENAGER was flown to hospital after being hit by a car near Wallan Secondary College on Thursday afternoon. Paramedics responded to reports that a car collided with a pedestrian near the corner of Watson Street and Northern Highway in Wallan.

Correction:

AFTER causing lengthy delays after their activation last week, traffic lights at one of Whittlesea’s busiest intersections have finally been completed. VicRoads installed detectors in the ground at the intersection of Plenty Road and Wallan Road on Wednesday as part of asphalting works. The detectors allow signal timings at the lights to automatically update based on real-time traffic conditions. Traffic lights at the $2.9 million intersection upgrade were temporarily operating

on a manual mode without detectors to keep pedestrians safe when crossing. VicRoads traffic engineers have been closely monitoring conditions at the intersection to ensure the safe flow of traffic. VicRoads Acting Regional Director, Metro North West Scott Lawrence said VicRoads understands delays are frustrating. “We understand delays are frustrating and we thank the community for their patience as we complete the final stages of this project,” he said.

Once detectors were installed, the community’s ire was drawn to the raised intersection, with some on social media joking about clearing the intersection off the large bump on one side. VicRoads inspected the intersection on Tuesday and decided to slightly lower the raised platform on Macmeikan Street to give drivers a smoother commute. These works will be completed by the end of November 2018.

YOUNG AUTHOR Prep student at Craigieburn Primary School, Nirbhay Singh, is one of seven student winners chosen from more than 500 entries submitted by primary school and home-schooled children across rural, regional and metropolitan Australia. Students submitted a piece of writing, of up to 500 words, based on a word they chose to reflect their lives and interests for the Oxford University Press competition.

Promises off track by Ian Blyth THE Andrews Government’s announcement that it will deliver a more reliable and comfortable journey for regional passengers thanks to a massive order of new trains has not met with the response intended. Possibly because the new trains are promised for the Geelong and Ballarat lines. Meaning that the Seymour, Shepparton and North East lines again miss out. Labor intends to invest $340 million to build 54 VLocity carriages to make up to 18 new three-car trains. The order will see the retirement of the old unreliable trains on the Geelong and Ballarat lines that currently cause delays. Replacing the Classic Fleet that includes Sprinters from the lines will boost punctuality and reliability across the regional network. There is no indication of when the Seymour line will lose its Sprinters. Judging by the report in last week’s North Central Review, this may not be any time soon. Following the fire on a Sprinter, a V/Line spokesperson advised that the company was “currently in the process of updating its on-board signage to make it clearer when the emergency process is.” No commitment to train upgrades – just bigger signs to instruct passengers how to dial 000. The Premier’s announcement also promises a $49.6 million project to include new train stations north of Bendigo at Goornong, Raywood and Huntly. The single platform stations will have car parking and covered waiting areas with seating. Labor will also start planning to reopen Harcourt Station and upgrade track on the Bendigo line between Bendigo and Kyneton to allow trains to run every 40 minutes during off peak times giving local passengers more travel options. The Andrews Government may have blown its last chance to deliver for regional rail, failing to include the north east and Shepparton train lines in its long awaited ‘regional rail’ plan. The Seymour line has for some time now been plagued with punctuality and reliability issues. The line is also serviced by some of the oldest rolling stock in the state.

How your vote works

EVERYONE on the electoral roll in Victoria has the right and the responsibility to vote. We live in a representative democracy and we elect representatives to make decisions on our behalf. Each of our three levels of government; Federal, State and local council has different responsibilities. Voting ensures that our elected representatives are genuinely those preferred by the majority of the electorate. On Saturday (November 24) you will be provided with two ballot papers. The smaller one for the Legislative Assembly (lower house) and the larger one for the Legislative Council (upper house). Victorian State elections use versions of the preferential voting system. This involves numbering candidates in the order of your preference. When you are required to number every candidate in order of your preference, the system in use is full preferential voting. Full preferential voting is used in elections in Victoria for the lower house (Legislative Assembly). In elections for the upper house (Legislative Council), the ballot paper features a thick black line horizontally across the page. The boxes above this line represent the groups that have registered one or more group voting tickets for the election. The boxes below the line represent each individual candidate. With this type of ballot you can vote either above or below the line but not both. If you vote above the line, you must only place 1 in the box for the group you want to support. Your ballot paper will be counted according to the preferences on that group’s registered group voting ticket. If you choose to vote below the line, place a 1 in the box against your most preferred candidate and then number the required number of other boxes according to your preference. For the Upper House you are only required to number a total of five preferences (i.e. 2, 3, 4 and 5), but you can number more.

Formal and informal votes A formal vote is a correctly completed ballot paper. It is the formal votes that are counted to determine the result. An informal vote is a ballot paper that has not been completed following the rules for the election. Informal votes are sometimes also known as invalid votes. They cannot be used to determine the election result.

Common causes of informality include: Using ticks or crosses where the voter is required to number preferences or failing to number the required number of boxes or incorrectly numbering preferences (such as missing or repeating preference numbers). Whenever you are casting your vote in an election, always follow the instructions on the ballot paper to ensure your vote is formal and can be counted.

Upper house ballot: enter either one number against the party of your choice above the line or number your preferences below the line.

Lower house ballot: put a number in each square in order of your preferences.

Welcome to Pollie Waffle – a page that will keep you up to date with events as the Victorian state election approaches. Each week we will feature comment from candidates, election developments and emerging issues. We will also provide a forum for our readers to put questions to the candidates on matters that concern them.

Lack of funding commitment disappoints MITCHELL Shire Council is disappointed that there have been no state election funding commitments for the Wallan freeway interchange, Watson Street duplication and Northern Highway capacity improvements. Council has raised the urgent need with all candidates following the recent VCAT decision to enable a major quarry to be built in Wallan East. The quarry will see an increase in heavy vehicle traffic and put pressure on already stretched and unsafe roads. Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Rhonda Sanderson said time was running out for this vital investment. “The main road network can’t cope at the moment, let alone with more growth to come and a quarry with heavy vehicles going in and out all day,” Cr Sanderson said. “We need a commitment now, so our community can go about their daily lives. We need certainty for the future so people can move here and know they will be able to get to work, child care, school, health care and shops as well as sporting, rec-

reation and other community facilities. “It’s particularly important that we get a commitment from the Victorian Government, whoever that ends up being, ahead of the upcoming Federal election. We need matching Federal funding, and this just won’t happen without Victoria coming to the table with a firm commitment now.” Cr Sanderson said council had also met with VicRoads to seek an urgent update on the status of the project. “The business case has been completed and it is understood the project has been costed and funding is needed for the works between the state and federal governments,” she said. “We need a funding commitment ahead of the state election, so we can ensure this is recognised as a priority in the upcoming federal election. “It’s not fair for our community to be forgotten and we can’t wait any longer. We need funding commitments locked in now, so construction is complete before the quarry begins operations.”

Whittlesea calls for mental health funding THE City of Whittlesea is calling on all local politicians for a commitment to provide much-needed mental health services as part of an annual injection of $250 million for health and human services in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. Local agencies have identified significant gaps in fundamental support services such as mental health services. The need for local mental health services is of particular importance for younger community members, with a recent survey of young people in the City of Whittlesea nom-

inating accessible mental health services as a top priority for the area. Mayor Lawrie Cox said that people in the City of Whittlesea are being turned away, put on long waiting lists or are forced to travel considerable distances to access the services they need. “An immediate funding injection of $250 million is needed to help with unmet demand in Melbourne’s growing outer suburbs for health and human services,” said Cr Cox. “We’re calling on all local politicians to commit to this.”

We asked sitting members and candidates - If elected on November 24 what do you plan to do in your first 100 days of the new parliament? Their responses appear below. NORTHERN VICTORIA Wendy Lovell – Liberal member for Northern Victoria I will hit the ground running to ensure my electorate is foremost in the minds of Government and all election commitments are delivered. I will continue to be available and provide strong representation to all constituents, whilst working to ensure there are more jobs, better infrastructure and our community is safer. Nicole Rowan – Greens candidate for Northern Victoria I will use my skills as a lawyer and experience in law reform to ensure that the Parliament make laws for the public good. My policy priorities will be shifting to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2020, a world class public transport system and ensuring that everyone has a home. EUROA Steph Ryan – Nationals member for Euroa I will prepare an order for new trains in our first budget, progress land acquisition for the Kilmore Bypass and introduce Presumptive Legislation into Parliament for CFA volunteers. I will also have discussions with VicRoads about management of roadside vegetation and progressing safety upgrades for the intersection of Kilmore-Lancefield Rd and Conway St. Keppel Cassidy – Greens candidate for Euroa I will advocate for public transport services to be brought up to at least the same standard as metropolitan Melbourne and other regional centres. My other key priorities are transitioning to 100 per cent renewable energy, increasing stocks of affordable housing, and restoring funding for community mental health services.

MACEDON Mary-Anne Thomas – Labor member for Macedon In my first 100 days I will focus on delivering the vital investments local families need to thrive as only Labor Governments do. This includes our record investments in local schools and kindergarten, to fixing the public transport black hole in this part of our region with extra bus services. Amanda Millar - Liberal candidate for Macedon In the first 100 days and every day I will stand up for our community. I will back our CFA by introducing presumptive cancer legislation for our volunteers in the first sitting week of 2019. I will always protect those who protect us. YAN YEAN Danielle Green - Labor member for Yan Yean I will enact election promise delivery actions. North East Link to be tendered and mental health professionals in schools for 2019. Do my utmost to support the wellbeing of bushfire surviving communities in the lead up 10th Anniversary. Hugh McKinnon - Greens candidate for Yan Yean I will immediately work towards strengthening the Victorian independent broad-based anti-corruption commission. I will take measures to end the secrecy around government deals and restore trust and confidence in government. Then I will restore funding for community mental health services and start planning for better roads and public transport. Jaclyn Symes, Fionna Deppeler-Morton, Meralyn Klein and Daniel Young had not responded at the time of going to press.

ONLINE HELP ROSTER IS PREVENTING THE BABY BLUES

HAVING a baby should be a joyous, exciting time….but sadly that’s not always the case. Some 48,000 premature or sick babies are born in Australia each year, placing thousands of families under increased stress and through an incredibly traumatic experience. The typical ‘drop a meal around’ after someone has a baby just doesn’t cut it in this scenario, these families need more help. Gather My Crew’s online help roster is addressing this critical need by offering a free resource for people to organise the help they need from family and friends. Anything from transport to and from hospital, help with the washing, help with meals and babysitting for other children. Midwife, Philippa Harris, sees the impact of these situations regularly. “In these situations people struggle with things they used to be able to do easily – Gather My Crew makes it easier, less stressful and less time consuming to coordinate everyone and everything,” Ms Harris said. Mum, Victoria, highlighted the challenges she faced when her twin girls were born premature. “I was released from hospital with two babies in separate special care hospitals and I couldn’t drive due to a twin C-section, it was pretty overwhelming. I didn’t have the time or ability to cook, clean or sleep. It was a very emotional time,” she said. Parents of premature and sick babies are at huge risk of poor mental health outcomes – more than 40% of NICU mums suffer from postnatal depression - compared to 5-10 per cent of mothers who give birth to full term healthy babies.

A 2018 study by UK premature baby support organisation, Bliss, further highlighted outcomes for parents after a neonatal experience. From 589 participants – 23 per cent of respondents were diagnosed with anxiety, 16 per cent diagnosed with PTSD, 14 per cent diagnosed with postnatal depression and 39 per cent of parents felt that had a mental health condition that was not diagnosed. World Prematurity Day on was held last Sunday (November 17) to create an awareness of the pressure that these families are under, make sure they are well supported and reduce their risks of further psychological challenges. “Gather My Crew would have taken the stress away. I could have got my family to help set it up, I wasn’t up to thinking about much at that time,” Victoria said. For more information, visit www.gathermycrew.org

BUSINESS NETWORK TURNS ONE LOCAL business people gathered at the Kilmore Golf Club recently to celebrate the first anniversary of the Mitchell Business Network (MBN). The event, Cocktails in the Clubhouse, saw some 24 business owners networking and hearing how much the Business Network has achieved in its first year. MBN founder and chairman, Bruce Nicholls, lead the discussion highlighting what the district could achieve if all pulled together. “We have some really bold ideas for major new projects, including attraction of university and research campuses

to Seymour, radical up-grading of our main-streets and hinterland attractions and even a drone training school, near Puckapunyal,” Mr Nicholls told the group. A feature of the evening was unveiling of a proposed business friendly charter, described by Mr Nicholls as a ‘sort of Magna Carta between the business community and Mitchell Shire’. “The charter will signal loudly to potential investors and project developers that Mitchell is a business-friendly place and that the Shire will remove red tape and other obstacles to make things happen,” Mr Nicholls said.

Employer relationship coordinator from Seymour Elizabeth Meng described the charter as a ‘refreshing idea.’ “It was terrific to be able to share common experiences with other business people,” Ms Meng said The Network is keen to hold similar, quarterly networking events in each of the main Mitchell townships and hopes to progressively build a wide following and strong business support for its excellent initiatives. Membership is $10 p.a. during the inaugural year and can be arranged by going to www.mitchellbusiness.com.au.

VICTORIA’S acting Chief Health Officer has warned gardeners about the potentially deadly risks associated with everyday potting mixes as spring is typically a time when Victorians are more likely to be gardening. Dr Sutton said notifications of illness caused by infection with Legionella longbeachae, a bacteria commonly found in potting mix continue to be made. “Too many gardeners, potting mix may seem harmless, but it can actually be very dangerous unless the correct procedures are followed,” Dr Sutton said. “Most people who breathe in the bacteria do not become ill. The risk of disease is increased with age, smoking, and in people with weakened immune systems.” Legionella longbeachae is one cause of Legionnaires’ disease. It is found in tiny quantities in the general environment (including soil) and is not normally a health hazard. But the ingredients and dampness of potting mix make it the ideal breeding ground for the bacteria.

Legionella longbeachae is different to Legionella pneumophila, the more well-known cause of Legionnaires’ disease found in poorly maintained cooling towers and spas. Dr Sutton said gardeners using potting mix should always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions on the bag. To minimise the risk of contracting Legionnaires’ disease from soil, compost or potting mix, gardeners should take the following precautions: always wear a mask and gloves when handling soil, compost or potting mix, wash hands carefully with soap and water after handling soil and before eating, drinking, smoking or placing hands near the face or mouth; Store bags of potting mix in a cool dry place. When stored in the sunlight, the temperature inside the bag can increase, creating an ideal environment for Legionella bacteria to grow. Open bags in a well ventilated space and open the bags slowly. Water gardens and composts gently, using a low-pressure hose; and avoid breathing in

droplets of water from dripping pot plants, including hanging baskets, and when watering plants. Dr Sutton said so far this year there had been seven cases of Legionella longbeachae, with 24 cases last year and 12 in 2016. A higher number of cases are reported during spring, with a peak in November. Legionnaires’ disease can be fatal in a small number of people who have severe illness. Infection with Legionella longbeachae bacteria is responsible for around 18 per cent of all legionella cases in Victoria. He said different types of legionella bacteria all cause a rare form of atypical pneumonia. Early symptoms include fever, chills, headache, shortness of breath, sometimes dry cough, muscle aches and pain. People who suspect they may be ill should visit their doctor. Further information about Legionella can be obtained from www.legionella.vic.gov.au or by contacting the Legionella Program on 1300 767 469.

What to do if you breakdown on a freeway WHETHER you’ve got a blown tyre, run out of fuel, or your car’s making strange grinding noises, breaking down is frustrating. If you’re on a freeway, it can also be extremely hazardous. Here are some tips from VicRoads to help keep you safe. The best thing to do is exit the freeway at your earliest opportunity. High speed roadways and stationery or slow moving vehicles present a serious risk to all. If you can’t exit the freeway, find a safe spot to pull over - like an emergency lane. Where there is no emergency lane, move as far to the left on the road as possible. Make sure your vehicle can be seen by other drivers. Turn on your hazard lights and activate your headlights.

Pedestrians and freeway traffic are a dangerous combination, with potentially tragic consequences. Only get out of your vehicle if it’s safe to do so, making sure you check for traffic first. Use the passenger-side door, if possible. If it’s not safe to get out of the car, stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on. Call emergency services, roadside assistance or the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre on 13 11 70, if required. Remember the road rules – don’t use a handheld mobile phone unless your car is at a complete stop and parked. If you can’t get your car off the road, call the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre on 13 11 70. Where possible,

Seymour College students bounce back with mural A GROUP of Year 9 and 10 Seymour College students have participated in a wall mural project with cartoonist Brett Cardwell as part of a careers and self-development program called Project Ready, run by Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network. The Project Ready students, who commenced the program in term two with Facilitator Wendy Hopkins, have completed several modules of work including careers development, self-discovery, work readiness, enterprise skills and work placement. As part the self-discovery unit, students completed a lesson called ‘Bounce Back’ where students learned strategies to cope with adversity. To help students unpack and explore the Bounce Back strategies, students designed and produced a mural on one of the college walls under the guidance of artist Brett Cardwell. “Project Ready has been a transformative program for these students. It has given them a safe place to be themselves and an opportunity to think about their futures and work

towards their career goals,” Project Ready Facilitator Wendy Hopkins said. “Today’s Bounce Back mural has really brought the group together, and been an experiential way for students to think about strategies to cope with struggles, disappointment and challenges. It’s also created a lot of excitement in the school,” Ms Hopkins said. Student Emily Bridges chose the letter ‘E’ from the Bounce Back acronym to spray paint. “The E stands for everybody experiences sadness and setbacks. It was really hard to capture the meaning of the letter and I ended up giving up. But with the help of everyone around me, I tried again. It helped me relate to the meaning of Bounce Back,” Emily said said. Project Ready was developed by Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network and funded through the School Focused Youth Service. Mitchell Shire Youth Department helped support the mural workshop. Students will undertake their final module of work being a community project, and then graduate from Project Ready on November 29.

The theme of 100 years on from WWI was an interesting topic for the students to learn about as well as taking the theme to various levels by visiting the memorial in Laurel St and the Wall of Remembrance. The students and teachers are proud of the hard work that went into creating this wall hanging.

The Whittlesea Campus is having a morning tea on November 30 at 10-11am and have invited all families, friends and the local community to come and celebrate the unique school setting. The campus is now taking enrolments for 2019 please call in or contact the school on 0428 289 930.

Tight game at Kilmore ROUND 5 of the Midweek CBD competition saw Wallan Division 1 travel to face last year’s Premiers Kilmore in what was expected to be (and was) a tightly contested game. The Wallan players, undefeated in the first four games this season started off in contrasting fashion over the three rinks. After three ends Brian Smethurst’s rink was leading 10-0. while Peter Glass’ rink trailed 0-10, and Barry Lingham’s rink and his opposition were separated by very little on the scoreboard. As the match wore on, Brian Smethurst’s opposition slowly rallied to lead by one shot with two ends to go. Fortunately Brian and his team finished stronger to run out two shot winners. Peter Glass’ rink has the opposite kind of day. After the first three ends, where they were behind by 10 shots, the team found their groove and only allowed their strong opposition a further 7 shots over the remaining two ends, whilst amassing two five shots for themselves, leading to a two 5-17 win. Barry Lingham’s rink were in a contest all day, with their opposition making up a deficit of 8 shots to be level with only a few ends to play. By this time the other rinks has finished their respective games and Wallan held an overall 10 shot buffer over Kilmore, leaving it to Barry’s rink to complete the game. In a dramatic finish, Kilmore picked up shots on the twotwond and twothreerd ends to lead by 8 shots on that rink, thus making the overall scores tied. To his team’s credit the Lingham rink fought back in the last two ends to reduce their deficit to three shots, thus providing Wallan with an overall win by 7 shots, and retaining their unbeaten record in season two 018/19. The other two Midweek Wallan sides compete in the CHBD. Wallan Gold recorded a 9 shot win over Woodend, strongly led by Kerry Page’s rink which won 40-17. Carol Glass in her first game as “skip” for the club, and only playing her second game back since her knee replacement also marshalled her troops well to record a five shot win. Unfortunately, Beryl Stewart’s rink tried valiantly against a strong opposition to go down, however despite their loss, the team won overall which is the objective of the game. The side is now in 5th place just outside the top four. Wallan Blue which, as previously stated comprises a number of new bowlers had a tough day against Gisborne Red. To their collective credit, the team fought hard with Carole Wright’s rink securing a two shot win, whilst the other two rinks, “skipped” by Caz Wright and veteran Allan Ryan both went down but by slender margins. Overall it was a 9 shot loss, however the continued improvement of these players is most evident and the club is positive their results will improve as the season progresses. There are no games on Saturday, November 17 or Tuesday November 20 due to the Victorian Open, thus giving all players a chance to re-group heading into the last rounds before the Christmas break. The club also congratulates Peggy Bell and Grace Taverner for winning the CBD Ladies Pairs Championship, played at Eildon BC on Sunday 11 November, winning the final two 9-7.

From the Boundary Vale Eugene Dwyer A highly regarded Marist Brother, Eugene Dwyer, was farewelled from this life at St Patrick’s Church, Kilmore recently. In attendance were many Marists, former ACK students, family and friends. Brother Eugene taught at ACK from 1971 to 1973 where he was also a dormitory supervisor and swimming coach. He also taught at Forbes in NSW, Marcellin College and for many years studied abroad in the USA, Italy, Kenya and Manilla. He was a brilliant scholar who made a notable contribution to the Marist order worldwide. A star of the show was Tim’s niece Monica, a comedian and ABC staffer. She is pictured here flanked by Tim and Bryan. No spin Shane Warne’s new book titled “No Spin” is selling in big numbers around the cricket world. It is a no holds barred account of his life on and off the field of play. Warne knows cricket and is an excellent commentator. He is scathing about our coaching and molly-coddling of modern day Australian players. “Brought up like robots and unable to think for themselves,” is one line. As a schoolboy the young Warne played footy and cricket for Mentone Grammar for three years in a row against ACK. He was a pretty handy footballer who once trialled for St Kilda. Varia Patrick Harding, son of Kilmore’s Gerald and Shirley Harding is enjoying playing in a Sunday competition in the St Kilda area. There are quite a few Indians and Pakistanis at his club and in recent games Patrick has come across some AFL footballers who like playing cricket in the off season. Melbourne ruck champ Max Gawn played in a recent game – “A lovely fellow,” said Patrick. HHH

Assumption first XI in the AGSV will see the side compete against Mentone, Marcellan, Brighton GS, PEGS, Peninsula and Ivanhoe leading up to the finals. In mid-December the team will play in the Australian Marist competitions in Perth. The annual police XI clash was played on November 14. The game each year is played for the George Howell Memorial Shield. Howell was a highly respected officer killed in the line of duty. The summer game has been a major part of the sporting scene at ACK for well over 100 years. HHH

Meanwhile the local SDCA competition looks fairly tight at A grade level after six rounds. Reigning premiers Broadford should be again well in contention. Kilmore needs one or two young players to step up. It is missing the prospect of young local lads Liam Monaghan and Ned Barry who are both fully involved with Assumption. Father Tim’s niece Tim Dullard is a much loved ACK ex-student. He captained the college first XVIII back in 1949 and Melbourne FC was keen to pick him up but he opted for the priesthood, joining the Augustinians. His brother Maurice was also a footy skipper back in 1947. The latter spend decades working in the Jesuit mission fields in India. The brothers came to Kilmore from a large family near Lockington, Northern Victoria. Tim Dullard was a contemporary of Kilmore former senior officer, Bryan Harding. The school day pals caught up recently for an outreach charity concert which raised $12,000 for this very worthy cause.

HHH

Wallan lad Patrick Mahoney, who has just graduated from ACK is a talented basketballer and footballer. He represented the college at first’s level for three years in both sports. In football he has played for the Wallan seniors and the Calder Cannons. Highlights of his time at ACK were the SHC Adelaide exchange weekends and his visit to East Timor for the spacial program in 2017.

Two-day losses to Mernda and Whittlesea

Gone the smash: A Mernda batsman tries to hit the cover off the ball. MERNDA Cricket Club were on the wrong end of a 181-run loss at the hands of Bundoora United in their two-day Diamond Valley Cricket Association Money Shield match. After winning the toss and putting themselves in, Bundoora United batted through day one, making 5/286 in 80 overs. Thissa Sanjeewa top-scored for Bundoora United with 105, while Nicholas Curtin made 60. It was tough going for Mernda’s bowling attack, but Aaron Greenough did his best to keep the score manageable with figures of 2/52 from 24 overs with 11 maidens. The Demons went into day two with time on their side but struggled to put runs on the board from the get go.

The opening partnership made just 25 runs, before a top order collapse left them 4/40 early on. Damon Earp and Stuart Wright tried to right the ship but couldn’t stay in the middle long enough to make a dint. Mernda lost its last four wickets in short order, finishing bowled out for 105 after 62.5 overs. WHITTLESEA Cricket Club lost the first innings of its Mash Shield two-day match against Panton Hill. Whittlesea won the toss and elected to bat before being bowled out for 139 after 51.1 overs. Corey Baker top-scored for Whittlesea with 34 runs, while Braydon Avola made 32. Panton Hill put the pressure on in its first innings, declaring at 7/241 after 72 overs thanks to half-centuries from opener Austin McCrabb (62) and Josh Barton (51). Nathan Heaney led the Whittlesea attack with figures of 3/19 from 14 overs. After Panton Hill’s declaration, Whittle-

sea were left to bat 30 overs to avoid an outright loss. Whittlesea’s batsmen played a slow, deliberate game, taking their time and valuing their wickets. Whittlesea was able to grind out the 30 overs to finish the day 3/79. Broadford upset Avenel BROADFORD Cricket Club has celebrated its second victory of the Seymour and District Cricket Association season with a 44-run win over Avenel on Saturday. Broadford started strong but looked to nearly suffer a top-order collapse before captain Ashley Wood dug in his heels to lead the side with 67 runs. However, the middle order started stopping like flies to leave Broadford at 6/139. The lower order stemmed the bleeding with a 63-run stand before Broadford finished the innings at 8/208. Avenel got off to a solid start thanks to opener Kasey Duncan’s 105. Wickets continued to fall around Duncan throughout the innings. At one point, Avenel lost five wickets for 13 runs. Avenel were eventually bowled out for 164 after 43 overs. Good weekend for Kilmore trainers by “Pegs” KILMORE trainer Tony Chibnall saddled-up Theodolite ($9.50) for a nice all-the-way win at Cranbourne last Saturday night. The five-year-old gelded son of Henrythenavigator and Rhythm And Green, ridden by apprentice Lachlan King, was a comfortable winner of the $20,000 Designer Coolrooms BM64 Handicap (1300m). The gelding defeated Go One Better ($10) by 2-1/4 lengths with Wrecking Ball ($3.90), a long neck away third. “It’s a big relief. We’ve had a few problems with the horse but we’ve come through and I would just like to thank all the owners for sticking by him and sticking by us. It’s sensational. “He’s such a big, heavy horse we’ve had feet issues with him,” an excited Chibnall said after the race. The young trainer was full of praise for the advice given to him by Riverina hoop Nick Souquet who rode him into second place last start at Corowa. The gelding was a bargain purchase by Chibnall for $5,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale for himself, family and friends. The gelding has now won four races with nine minor placings from 29 starts, already earning $74,109 in prizemoney.

Donald win for Alicia Fellow Kilmore trainer Alicia Macpherson was successful the following day at the Donald Cup meeting with Missandei ($3.80). All but blotting her copy book with an unplaced run on her home track last start, the Helmet five-year-old mare has been a model of consistency of late in taking out the Gilchrist & Co BM64 Handicap (1000m). Rated beautifully in the lead by Linda Meech, the mare defeated Tycoon Roxy ($2.70) by two lengths with the $2.60 favourite Dominant Way a further five lengths away third. Part-owned by the trainer and a host of stable clients, Missandei has now won three races with seven minor placings from her 20 starts.

Romsey, Wallan lose two-dayers FACING a large run chased, Romsey Cricket Club ran out of time against Sunbury, losing the first innings of its McIntyre Cup two-day match. Sunbury set a massive first innings total of 242 with Dylan Landt making 81 and Stephen Treweek making 53. The pressure of the large total

seemed to get the best of Romsey in its first innings, as the Redbacks were skittled for just 82 after 27.4 overs. It was a horror start for Romsey, who were 5/2 at one point. Ben Way, the only batsman in the top six to make runs, top-scored for Romsey in the first innings with 27. The lower order was able to get a

few runs on the board, with Taylor Stevenson making 19, before being bowled out. Sunbury enforced the follow on, giving Romsey a chance to get a lead with time to try and steal a victory. The Redbacks made a real go of it, making 2/196 in 41 overs before

running out of time. Opener Damien Devlin ended the innings 65 not out while Matthew Milne made 81. ROMSEY 82 (B Way 27; J McGowan 4/21, H Boffey 3/14, J McGann 3/18) and 2/196 (M Milne 81, D Devlin 65*, A Frost 35*)

Wallan held a nine-run lead at the end of day one thanks to an early declaration at 6/124 from Gisborne. The Magpies started the day 2/33 with plenty of time to post a large total and make life difficult for Gisborne. Captain Kieran Atkin came in early on day two and led the side with 38 runs from 62 balls before being caught. The Magpies were bowled out for 109 after 49.3 overs, losing their last four wickets for 11 runs. Chasing 85 runs, Gisborne was able to get the job done in just 14.1 overs thanks to Jakson Knight’s 55 not out.
