President's Message by Jim O'Donnell

Hello friends and neighbors. It has been a busy summer and welcome home to those who have been away. Work continues to improve the HOA and Country Club common areas. Pickleball courts are completed, some pools have been replastered (with others scheduled), solar panels on pool 3 have been replaced and next summer we anticipate that water aerobics classes will be held in “cool” water temperatures. Trees have been trimmed and the painting project remains on schedule. The clubhouse renovation has taken longer and is costing more than anticipated. The great news is that in the last few months we have made significant progress on the project and anticipate having our certificate of occupancy by year’s end. The remodel is magnificent and we will all soon enjoy fabulous food, drink, laughter, and friendship.

THE JEWEL

A letter was sent to membership October 20, 2022 which explains the Board decision on how to pay for the project. If you have any questions please reach out to Todd Kelly or myself. The “Season” will not begin in the clubhouse so management has scheduled numerous events at pools or under the stars. A special shout out to our Social Committee Chair Patrick Dragonette and Rodrigo. The golf course opens on November 11th. Several months ago, representatives from the Woman’s and Men’s clubs got together with JB and coordinated the entire golf schedule for 2023. We are lucky to have incredible volunteers on all committees and I thank you all for past and future efforts. There have been many home sales since 2020 (when the clubhouse closed for covid and then renovation).

I am sure new members will find that the clubhouse facilitates the sense of community that makes Marrakesh so special. Looking forward to raising a glass with everyone! We are very fortunate to have hired General Manager/COO Todd Kelly. Todd joined us in early June. He has been instrumental in moving the renovation project forward, all the while dealing with staffing issues, implementing policies and procedures, membership issues, etc. Todd is blessed with high energy (think energizer bunny) and I am amazed at what he has accomplished in his short time here. Thank you, Todd! Sincerely, Your Board President

General Manager's Message

The Magic of Marrakesh by Todd Kelly

There are so many words that we can use to define magic. The ones I like most are “Extraordinary”, “Marvelous”, and “Wow!” In my five months at Marrakesh, I have seen how these words describe the way that our community resiliently perseveres with celebration, pride, and care. Whether through the prestige of our architecture or a home accented with a personal touch, we stay connected through Friday Happy Hours at a neighbor’s home, golf rounds played with long-time friends, and activities that ignite curiosity and engagement like pickleball, card games, art lessons, hiking, and sharing a meal.

Our committees, board, and staff strive each day to create a better future. New perspectives have provided vast improvements and the renovated Clubhouse opens fresh possibilities into who we are and where we are going. As we sprint to the construction finish line, we begin a new chapter into the future. Maintaining an attitude of positivity and resilience is our biggest strength. We can focus on difficulties or discover opportunities for innovation. We can talk about how hard things are, or how good it is to keep going.

The more opportunities we find for thanks and celebration, the more we remind ourselves of how far we have come. Join me in celebrating each other, our patience, our veterans, and our staff as we move into a season of gratitude and celebration. I look forward to meeting and seeing you all soon. With Marrakesh Pride,

Todd

Todd Kelly General Manager

As our Thanksgiving and Holiday season begins, these values, customs, and traditions unite us and keep us focused on the work at hand. Through words of encouragement, our scholarship foundation, area reps, emergency captains, dining menus, wine offerings, or a wave of “hello”, caring is at the core of who we are. So too, a thriving and healthy community depends on a strong commitment to excellence through service.

Director of Grounds Report By Juan Martinez, Director of Grounds

Hello Marrakesh Members! My name is Juan Martinez. Formerly, I worked in the Los Angeles area at Trump National where I started as a spray tech and worked myself up to Golf Course Superintendent. In 2005 I relocated to the Coachella Valley and worked at Porcupine Creek, Tamarisk Country Club, and Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort. The team and I have recently completed the overseeding process for the HOA and golf course which is performed for the aesthetics and overall golf experience. In the Southern states, golf course managers practice overseeding to keep conditions lush during the fall and winter seasons. This practice caters to golfers, as well as anyone who enjoys the emerald turf year round. In the early fall, courses close for several weeks and the maintenance staff scalps the Bermuda grass through chemical and mechanical use followed by

THE JEWEL

germination which requires heavy and repetitive watering and fertilization. While the Bermuda grass is dormant, the Rye is in its growing season. This allows the golf course an opportunity for playability and aesthetics during winter months.

This week we celebrated Senior Groundskeeper, Ramon Flores who retired from Marrakesh after 30 years of service (image below). Although we are sorry to see him go, we are happy for him to start a new chapter. I'm looking forward to another successful season at Marrakesh.

Golf Report by John Birchard, PGA, Director of Golf and Head Golf Professional

The golf staff and Juan Martinez our new Director of Grounds are in full swing getting ready for opening day Friday Nov. 11th. If you haven’t already made your tee time for opening day or signed up for the Men’s or Ladies opening day events online through our new website or with Fore-Tees, don’t wait another minute longer, tee times are going fast! Juan Martinez and his crew completed our biggest project this summer with addition of new Augusta White sand in our bunkers. The aesthetics and the playability of the new sand will make even the hardest bunker shot easy and you’ll look good doing it!

You will also notice the new well located left of the tee box on #17 tee! This has been a long but necessary project for Marrakesh as a whole! It will be up and operational in the very near future! A new addition to Marrakesh Golf staff is our 1st Assistant Professional Dale Shaw, Dale joined us from Chaparral CC, she is a former tour player and PGA and LPGA accredited. Please take the time to stop in and say hello to Dale and of course my returning staff Bob Burke, Dalton Murphy, Steve Ziegler, and John DeJong. Fairways & Greens,

Clubhouse Manager Report by Rodrigo Gutierrez

On the same note, with the new bar, expect a new beginning of how we will expand our bar services with classic cocktails, craft cocktails, and wine selection. Nowadays, it seems like just about everything is a craft – whether it's beer, cocktails, or the entire bar itself. Fresh ingredients, whether it's muddled herbs or squeezed fruit juice, the ingredients in your cocktail should all be as fresh as it gets. For more intricate cocktails, to create the best craft cocktails, we may also be using ingredients that are specially made in-house – such as a small batch of bitters or syrups. Expect an excellent presentation; from the glass selection to how the cocktail is poured dramatically affects how we perceive a drink's experience. Our curated selection of wine starts with our connection to the winemakers, vendors, and visits to the wine country.

THE JEWEL

We carefully choose our wine based on our membership profile; I have been fortunate to serve this membership for over 20 years, and being a Sommelier, I have a good sense of members' favorite grapes. Therefore, I tailor the wine selection to match Chef Russel's menu and our members' preferences. I aim to always look for spectacular wines without paying high prices. I am fortunate to have a good reputation in the industry which helps me to be on the look-out for the best deals on wines. Modern, Clean, and Sophisticated is our motto for everything we will do in our New Clubhouse, and we look forward to serving you.

Culinary Report by Chef Russell Rodriguez Welcome back to a new season! We are delighted to welcome back our long-standing members and meet our latest members. As we prepare to open a new season, we are excited and looking forward to operating in our new clubhouse to deliver the best food and beverage program for which we are known. As Executive Chef, I am responsible for developing our menu selections that pair robust flavors and visual appeal with seasonal components that highlight fresh products that are abundant throughout the year. Menus must consist of dishes that can be consistently executed, balanced with a targeted food cost, and offer an elevated level of satisfaction, comfort, and familiarity. When planning our menus, as the Chef, I have to consider serving logistics, preparation duties required to execute a particular dish, cooking times to prepare and plate, equipment availability, kitchen personnel, and their respective cooking stations.

At this point, based on industry standards, menus offer a limited number of choices, consistent product quality, availability, cost, and kitchen personnel needed to execute the menu to the highest standards, all of which play an essential part in the number of dishes offered during dining periods. We remain focused on a seasonal menu approach, offering the calendar's freshest choices from produce to seafood. As a result, menus at Marrakesh will change throughout the year. Each seasonal menu is intended to highlight the various changes in our microclimates during the season; menus during the Fall are oriented around autumnal vegetables, dried fruits, sustainable seafood, and prime meats. Following this, our winter menus reflect roasted and longer-cooked braised dishes. Finally, spring and summer seasonal menus are marked by entrees, salads, and sandwiches that reflect a lighter touch, accompanied by an array of fresh seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs. ,

At the same time, as the Chef, I must develop relationships with wellestablished, dependable companies that insist on quality and have yearround access to the best ingredients to achieve success. To properly accept and hold high-quality products needed for preparing numerous menu options, the Chef must put standard operating procedures in place to ensure that products are kept under the most favorable conditions. In addition, our culinary team works closely with the front-of-the-house staff so that everyone understands the details and components of each dish, from sourcing locations, grades, cooking times, plating, garnishing, and final plate presentation. We always aim to take full advantage of products packed full of flavor in peak season, offering a variety of flavors, in essence, "inspired cuisine," which provides you members and your guests with something new and inventive to look forward to during the year. We invite you to immerse yourselves in colorful and flavorful dishes inspired by the seasons.

Community Services by Monique Kerrigan, Community Services Manager

Welcome back Members! It’s wonderful to see new and familiar faces returning to Marrakesh during the most beautiful time of year. The Painting Project started in June and it has been very successful. The remaining areas are 14, 11, 12, and common areas. If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact me at monique@marrakeshcountry club.com or project manager Steven Hall at [email protected]. Replastering at Pools 4, 9, and 12 have been completed and are ready for use. Pool 2 is in construction and will be open for swimming in midDecember. In the last year, we converted two more additional pools to saltwater, and we are proud to report that five of our fourteen Pools now use saline instead of chlorine (pools 2, 3, 8, 10, and 12). In these Fall and Winter months, all pools and spas are heated comfortably (pools are heated to approximately 85-88 degrees and spas are heated to approximately 102 degrees).

THE JEWEL

Please note that water aerobics has been moved to Pool 8 as dining and social events will take place at Pool 3 during Season. Additionally, we have begun the ongoing project of pool solar system repair, which will assist with pool cooling and heating. We have completed the Pool 3 solar system repair so that it maintains a comfortable temperature without the use of natural gas. We have resurfaced four Pickleball courts with permanent netting and posts, and it looks incredible! Please bring your own water while we await the arrival of our new water fountain.

To streamline our work order system, we are excited to announce that Olga Rojas now administers all HOA-related work orders and has moved to the administrative office. To place a work order, please email workorder@marrakeshcountryc lub.com. Looking forward to a great season ahead!

FUN, FELLOWSHIP, FOOD

Marrakesh has a rich women’s golf program which includes the Niners, the Lady Putters, and the Women’s Club. This year, the Niners will play on Tuesday, the Lady Putters on Wednesday, and the Women’s Club on Thursday. This new schedule allows members to get the full benefit of MCC’s golf program and take advantage of each activity’s unique elements. Golfing with the Niners is a great way to enjoy golf with a smaller time investment and more casual play. Ladies Golf is more challenging with 18 holes of play and typically more experienced golfers. The Lady Putters offers an opportunity to hone your putting skills or merely experience being on the course and using a club. You don’t have to have golf experience to join the Putters. The Lady Putters meets on Wednesday mornings at 10am and putts at 10:30. Most of the putters enjoy lunch together after putting. Management has arranged some coffee & donuts to be available on Wednesdays at Pool #3 on Rabat until the clubhouse is complete. Joining Putters is easy. The annual fee of $95 may be charged to your MCC account. If you’re not sure you want to join, just stop by on any Wednesday to try it out. Hope to see you on Wednesday, November 16, opening day for the Lady Putters!
