Father Hector’s Message
Why So Many Icons on the Walls of our Church? Dear Annunciation Family, Our icon project in the Nave of our Church will continue this Friday, November 4th, when the iconographer arrives from Greece. All the saints listed on pages 4 & 5 of the Annunciator will be added to the walls of the church over the next few weeks. Every single saint was sponsored by parishioners, families, and friends of our Annunciation Church. I’d like to share why we cover the walls of our Orthodox churches with icons of saints and why this project will be a blessing to our church in particular. In the Orthodox Church, we recognize the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant. We who are still in this life make up the Church Militant. We are still “fighting the good fight” for our salvation and the salvation of our fellow man, and we will continue to battle until our last breath when we make our transition to the Church Triumphant. The Church Triumphant is made up of all those faithful Orthodox Christians who have “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith” (1 Timothy 4:7). This includes our faithful ancestors in addition to all the Saints who have lived throughout the centuries, faithfully serving God. The icons of the Saints filling our church walls remind us of this “great cloud of witnesses” praying with us at every church service, and especially during the Divine Liturgy, as St. Paul says: “Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1). There is a special story behind every saint that was sponsored by our fellow parishioners. Some saints were chosen and sponsored because they bore the name of a beloved family member who has transitioned already from the Church Militant to the Church Triumphant. In other cases, saints were sponsored because of the special intercession a family was seeking on behalf of a loved one. There were also the touching stories of saints being sponsored because of their role in the healing or miraculous intervention of a family member. The Kappatos family, for example, sponsored the icon of St. Gerasimos after the life of their brother and son, Gerasimos, was miraculously saved by the intercessions of the Saint after he was hit by a car. The saints are alive, and their life-size presence on the walls of our church remind us at every church service that they are active in our lives, listening to our prayers, and glorifying God with us! Another blessing of this icon project is that it reflects the diversity of the Kingdom of Heaven! We have male and female saints, rich and poor saints, and saints from all parts of the world, including Greece, Russia, North America, Ireland, Egypt, Ethiopia, and China, representing also the diversity of backgrounds and talents of our own parishioners. The decorative curtain that surrounds the lower level of the icon project represents all of us, that we are all a work in progress behind this curtain, striving to grow in God’s likeness and become Saints of God in His Church Triumphant! With love in Christ,
+Fr. Hector
