Greetings from the Dean and Vice President you study for your Board Certification examination or review the medical chart of a patient, you are a student. When listening to your patients or during a discussion with a consultant, you are a student. Only by continuing your quest for knowledge will you be able to continue the path that the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine has prepared you for: Being the best physician you can be. Healing your patients. Representing the profession. Stemming a pandemic. To the Class of 2020, Congratulations to all of you for your incredible achievement. You are taking the most important step in your medical career–you have earned your degree. This is an exciting moment, as you now join not only a distinguished group of alumni but also the physician community at large. Your graduation looks quite different from what you and I had imagined it would look like just a few months ago, and so does our world and our world view. You are entering health care at a time that will be one of the defining moments in health care and for your generation. This will allow you to make an unprecedented impact on the health of everyone around you. Although you might think that your studies are over, as a physician your life as a student never ends. Internship and residency are easily identifiable as a continued learning environment, but as a physician, you always continue as a student. Whether it is when
No public relations campaign or advertising budget will ever be as successful at promoting NYITCOM and osteopathic medicine as when you provide high-quality, compassionate care. This, as you can imagine, puts quite a burden on you as new graduates. I challenge you to remember this for the rest of your medical career. You not only represent yourself, but every NYITCOM graduate, every osteopathic physician, every physician who was hooded before you–even though their hooding was not virtual. Congratulations to all of you and your families,
Jerry Balentine, D.O., FACEP, FACOEP Dean, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Vice President, Health Sciences and Medical Affairs

Academic Regalia Since the Middle Ages, universities have graduated their students with a mixture of great dignity and elaborate ceremony. Many of these traditions can still be found in today’s commencement ceremonies, particularly in terms of the garments worn by today’s graduates, faculty, and honored guests. Since the great universities of Europe were often affiliated with religious institutions, the garments worn at commencement often resemble clerical vestments. The gown that is worn by those who hold a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree is black, one of the traditional colors used to symbolize medicine. The doctoral gown is adorned with broad panels of green velvet that circle the collar and run down the front (the velvet trim is used to distinguish doctoral candidate from those receiving lesser degrees). Three green chevrons also appear on each sleeve, further signifying academic rank. Green is another of the traditional colors symbolizing medicine. The hood also has its origin in ceremonies that originated in the Middle Ages. Those participating in the hooding ceremony today will not wear their doctoral hoods on their heads, but instead will drape them down their backs. The doctoral hood is approximately four feet in length and has a green velvet border. The hood worn by the graduates at today’s ceremony is lined with blue and gold satin, representing New York Institute of Technology’s colors. Tams are academic headwear, which may be worn by anyone with a doctorate-level degree. They are made of soft fabric, usually velvet, with a short tassel attached to a button in the center of the tam.

The Staff of Asclepius The symbol of osteopathic medicine is the staff of Asclepius. This staff, or rod, which appears as a serpent wound around a crude wooden stick, symbolizes the art of healing. In ancient Greece serpents were considered sacred and used to represent the hidden, mysterious healing powers of the earth. Rods were thought to recognize and neutralize poisons. Hippocrates, along with other ancient Greek physicians, belonged to a faction of physicians who believed that much of healing was accomplished by Nature helping to cure the patient. These early physicians were followers of Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. They took their patients to the temples of this god where they used fresh air, mountain springs, manipulations, healthy food and some non-poisonous serpents to heal the sick. Patients also rested and prayed to the gods, while they waited for inspired dreams that were thought to contain imagery involving serpents. The more familiar Caduceus, another symbol for medicine, is a rod surrounded by two serpents and topped with two wings. It is more appropriately associated with the messenger god Hermes, and was originally represented as two vines wrapped around an olive branch. Even though both symbols contain serpents, the Asclepius represents non-poisonous types while the Caduceus depicts the deadly variety. The Staff of Asclepius is an extension of the healing powers of the earth and the physician god, while the Caduceus represents protection against danger while traveling. It also represents the purification of dangerous substances. Although the medical profession has used both the Asclepius and the Caduceus, the staff of Asclepius is the symbol for both the American Osteopathic Association and the American Medical Association.

Osteopathic Oath I do hereby affirm my loyalty to the profession I am about to enter. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and the life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect, both as physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent withgood judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature’s laws and the body’s inherent capacity for recovery. I will be ever vigilant in aiding the general welfare of the community, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those practices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no deadly drugs to any, though it be asked of me. I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by work or by act cast imputations upon them or their rightful practices. I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college I will be loyal and strive always for its best interests and for the interests of the students who will come after me. I will be ever alert to adhere to and develop the principles and practice of osteopathic medicine and surgery as taught in this college. In the presence of this gathering I bind myself to my oath.
