Your New Community Welcomes You
Ocoee, Then... Before it was the city we know and love today, Ocoee was a small agricultural settlement with vegetable and citrus crops. It began with the settlement of malaria stricken Dr. J.D. Starke in the 1850’s, who settled near the clean waters of the lake that today still bears his name.
The name Ocoee comes from an old Cherokee word that means apricot vine; also known as the passion flower. It was given by Bluford M. Sims in 1886 when he had the town platted and renamed. A native Tennessean, who served in the confederacy, Captain Sims named the town after the Ocoee river in his home state. Sims opened the first citrus nursery in the United States.
Ocoee’s school system had humble beginnings. Back in 1880, the only school in the town was a small hut on Floral Street. The hut was later replaced with a wooden structure and in 1920, an actual brick and cement building were built. The principal of the school, William Blakely, was also the mailman and Justice of the Peace, at the time.
In the late 1800’s, the town experienced rapid population growth with the construction of the Florida Midland Railroad. Later, with the construction of State Road (SR) 50, the major highway led to increasing development as affordable houses were built to accommodate the swelling population.
With the year-round temperatures making it possible for extending the growing season and the highway and rail systems, Ocoee’s citrus quickly became a chief export for the area. Ocoee’s small town charm brought people from near and far to call this city home.
