THE MONKEY AND THE CROCODILE BY KARTHIK ANANTHA SUBRAMANIAN

CROCS A middle aged crocodile who is unaware of a lot of things in his surroundings. CROCKILA A sharp and smart crocodile who tries to ensure things are on track

KORANGAN A clever monkey who thinks on his feet when under pressure. Mischievous as well. 6

CROCS: As you can see, I’m a crocodile. But I’m not any ordinary crocodile. I am Crocs. I’m the king of the jungle. CROCKILA: Ahem… The lion is the king of the jungle. CROCS: Uhhh… I’m the king of the oceans. CROCKILA: Blue whale is the king of the oceans. CROCS: I’m the king of the rivers. CROCKILA: This isn’t a river. CROCS: I’m the king of the lakes. CROCKILA: Lake. Just this one. CROCS: Fine. I’m the king of just this lake. CROCKILA: Well, there are only two of us. I’m the obvious queen, so, naturally you’re the obvious king. CROCS: Fine. I’m the obvious king of just thisCROCKILA: Enough. As it is there are hardly any fish in this lake. I’ve been travelling hundreds of kilometers every day in search of food only to come back to you shouting punch lines. Ones that aren’t even great. Now, stop all this nonsense and go get some food. 7

KORANGAN: Oi Crocooo! CROCS: It’s Crocs! KORANGAN: Okay okay. Crocooo, what are you doing? CROCS: Searching. KORANGAN: For? CROCS: Food. KORANGAN: What food? CROCS: Meat. KORANGAN: What meat? CROCS: Animal meat. KORANGAN: Chicken, fish, pork or lamb? CROCS: Lamb. KORANGAN: Cooked or uncooked? CROCS: Cooked. KORANGAN: Well done or rare? CROCS: Rare KORANGAN: Blue rare, rare or medium rare? CROCS: Medium Rare. KORANGAN: Super! CROCS: Huh? You have it ah? KORANGAN:….No. CROCS: What nonsense. Don’t waste my time. 8

9

KORANGAN: Okay, okay. Let me help you. CROCS: How will you do that? KORANGAN: Here, take this. CROCS: What is this? KORANGAN: It’s a …heart. CROCS: What nonsense. KORANGAN: Believe me. Bite into it! …….Is it juicy? CROCS: Yes. KORANGAN: Very juicy? CROCS: Yes. KORANGAN: And you’ve heard that animal hearts are juicy, right? CROCS: Yes yes. But this is not like any animal heart I have tasted before. KORANGAN: Don’t tell anyone I gave it to you. CROCS: You know what. I’m willing to let bygones be bygones. Thank you for helping me out. You want to shake on it? 10

CROCKILA: Ohhh..where is this man? How irresponsible. Let me tell you all a story. Last week, we had a food shortage at home. As usual. So we both decided that we will eat whatever meat we get our hands on – I searched for 1 whole hour and found nothing. Suddenly he called. He told me. He said we got our hands on four kidneys. My mouth started to water. I asked him - which animal’s kidneys? He said - it doesn’t matter. Correct only no? It doesn’t matter! So, I waited. And I waited. And I waited. Finally, he came home and showed me the food. You know what it was? Cashew nuts. Some salesman had duped him. I won’t be surprised if today also CROCS: Look what I found! A heart. CROCKILA: This is a heart? CROCS: You don’t think so? CROCKILA: No. CROCS: Well, I knew you wouldn’t. It’s an exotic type. CROCKILA: Aaaaaaah! It’s an apple! An apple! It’s a fruit! 11

12

CROCS: Impossible. CROCKILA: Did you find it near a tree? CROCS: But animals also live near trees, no? CROCKILA: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! CROCS: Okay. Calm down. That monkey, he fooled me. He won’t get away with it next time. He will repay for it. With his… With his… CROCKILA: With his heart, maybe? CROCS: Correct. With his heart. Else my name is not CROCKILA: This isn’t the time for punch lines. Please, go. CROCS: How do I make him pay? CROCKILA: Horrible!

13

KORANGAN: I’m singing in the rain, lalalalalala, I’m singing in the rain, lalalala, lalalala, I’m singing in the rain CROCS: You sing very well. KORANGAN: Who is thatCROCS: Me? KORANGAN: You? CROCS: Hi KORANGAN: What brings you back here? Want more hearts, huh? CROCS: No, no. I wanted to show you something. KORANGAN: What? CROCS: So, I heard the old bear talk to his friend. There’s a place, across the river, with many fruits. Bananas and apples. KORANGAN: So? That’s there even here. It’s even cheap here. CROCS: But you know what is better than cheap, cheaper than cheap? Free. KORANGAN: What? How? CROCS: It’s a prime offer. It lasts only 5 hours. KORANGAN: FREEEE? CROCS: Humans did evolve from apes. KORANGAN: Stop talking to yourself and let’s go! CROCS: Why don’t you just stay on my back? I’ll take you across the river 14

KORANGAN: Crocsiee? Where exactly are we going? CROCS: Ha! You thought I was going to take you across the river for free fruits? Hahahahah! I’m going to take you home. I’m going to eat you for dinner for fooling me with that apple! KORANGAN: Wait! Wait! I’m sorry. CROCS: It’s too late to be sorry. You’re done. KORANGAN: Uhhhh. I know! I want to pay for my mistake. CROCS: What? KORANGAN: Yes! What I did was wrong, and it’s only fair that you get my heart. But… CROCS: What? KORANGAN: I don’t have my heart with me! CROCS: What are you saying? KORANGAN: Uhhh Yes! You know, unlike you aquatic creatures, we don’t take our hearts with us everywhere. What if it falls when we are swinging from tree to tree, huh? Hence! CROCS: Alright. Let’s head back right now and get it. I won’t let you escape today. KORANGAN: Definitely Crocoo. I’ll never cheat you. 15

16

KORANGAN: (Laughs) Crocooooo! You really thought that I leave my heart in the trees? How is that possible? (laughs) CROCS: Bu…you…uh….AAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Uh! He…he..uh.. CROCKILA: YOU HAD ONE JOB…. CROCS: Uh..Kidney? CROCKILA: AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

THE MONKEYS GO FASTING BY SUKANYA UMESH

KORANGAN A curious monkey who likes to observe humans

BANDRAN An excited monkey eager to discuss things with other monkeys

MANGAA A creative monkey who likes to share his ideas

KOTHI A realistic monkey who likes to think logically

18

KORANGAN: Humans are soooo strange! BANDRAN: I agree. Why do they make so much noise? MANGAA: A right royal ruckus. KOTHI: I overheard them. They’re talking about some silly ritual about not eating food! KORANGAN: Oh! Me too! They said they won’t eat for a whole day! BANDRAN: That’s crazy! Humans are crazy! MANGAA: Why would anyone want to be hungry for a whole day? KOTHI: Exactly! Why do they want to be angry and irritated? BANDRAN: If they don’t want to eat this, why can’t they give it to us? KORANGAN: I don’t think that’s the case… They just believe that if they go hungry for a while, their wishes will come true! MANGAA: What do they wish for? KOTHI: Who knows? I would not know what to wish for other than more food! MANGAA: Oooh ooh, that’s a great idea! KORANGAN: What? MANGAA: I’ll tell you! I’ll tell you! BANDRAN: I don’t like this idea already. 19

MANGAA: Why don’t we go on a fast? KORANGAN: You mean go fast? BANDRAN: I think we’re already fast enough. KOTHI: Yes, yes! Remember that day? We snatched a chips packet from a little boy, and (laughs) he could not believe how fast we were! MANGAA: Not that!!! Why don’t we go on a fast to please the human god - and get a boon from him? KOTHI: OOOOOOOH! KORANGAN: Okay! Let’s fast! MANGAA: Start. We’ll start! MANGAA: Hey, are we allowed to talk? KOTHI: What does eating have to do with talking? KORANGAN: Uhhh they have the mouth in common, so maybe KOTHI: Yes, yes! You can talk!

20

21

BANDRAN: How long are we going to stay hungry for this? MANGAA: I got an idea! KORANGAN: Do we have to stop doing something else we like? MANGAA: No, no, no..Uh..Uh..We..why don’t we do one thing? We will peel off the bananas, and keep them ready, so that when we finish the fast, we can eat them fast! KOTHI, BANDRAN and KORANGAN: Ooooooh

22

23

KORANGAN: Ohohoh! I have an idea this time! MANGAA: I hope it’s a better one than the peeling one. KOTHI: Tell us! Tell us! KORANGAN: What if we put the banana in our mouth, but not eat it? BANDRAN: That’s a great idea! KORANGAN: That way, the bananas won’t get spoiled and the flies won’t sit on them!

24

25

MANGAA: (still eating the banana) Didn’t we get what we already wanted? BANDRAN: What - are you talking? KORANGAN: And the fast also went by so fast, no? KOTHI: And our wish came true! MANGAA: Well, what are we waiting for?? KOTHI: Lets’ eat! KORANGAN: All’s well BANDRAN: That eats well!

FEATHERLESS, FEARLESS BY BAYAAR SHARMA

MINA A lovebird working as a model, who is a bit tired of modelling

RONNIE A lovebird who used to be a model, now suffering from a disease

CHEEL A kite who works as a photographer

NOVA A lovebird who works as a model, trying to cheer up her sister Ronnie

27

MINA: Photoshoots are so exhausting! NOVA: Tell me about it! Cheel makes us perch on the same branch every time! MINA: Have you noticed that he makes us fly the same lap every year? NOVA: And the poses… MINA: Left wing up NOVA: Swish, swish like you mean it! SWISH! MINA: It’s so annoying when he makes us do the “New-age Ruffled Feathers” look! NOVA: Beat this. He made me perch upside down! MINA: (laughs) I know, I saw! When Tyrion looked at you he had a panic attack! He thought something was wrong (laughs) NOVA: He started pecking at me! Thank heavens, Cheel had the sense to explain what was actually going on! 28

29

CHEEL: Alright kids. Good work today. I will see you both in two days. Now, shoo! Uh… Nova? NOVA: Yeah? CHEEL: How’s Ronnie doing? NOVA: The same old thing. She’s mad at you for going to see her, and mad at me for sending you to see her. CHEEL: Well, you can’t blame her…You know what happened when I went to see her?

30

CHEEL: RONNIE! Come on out! RONNIE: Go away! CHEEL: Ronnie I know you’re out of quarantine! Nova told me! Even the vet confirmed it! RONNIE: I don’t want to see you, or Nova, or anybody else! I can’t come out! Go away!! CHEEL: What!? The great Ronnie Elbee, professional soarer, three-time winner of Miss Finest Plumage, face of Avian Weekly, is afraid!? RONNIE: Yes, I am. See? Now say I should be soaring! (Sighs) Fledgelings shriek when they see me! All the birds look at me with so much pity, I can’t take it any longer! RONNIE: Listen, Cheel. I know you want me back in modeling and all, but I don’t think this is going to work. Nobody wants to see a bird that has lost all its feathers and colour. CHEEL: But, Ronnie--RONNIE: I said, no! Do you know what it feels like to be a featherless bird? Modelling was all I knew. That was my life. With each photoshoot, my spirits were soaring! When the disease struck, I lost all my feathers! My career is gone! And now, with no wings and colour, I lost my confidence too. I don’t think this is going to work. And plus, I don’t want those snobbish Eagle editors to rub it in my face for the entire Aviary to look!! 31

32

CHEEL: She wouldn’t listen. NOVA: Believe me, that was Ronnie at her best behaviour since recovery! CHEEL: Come on, you have to cut her some slack. NOVA: Sure, you want to know what happened when I went home? RONNIE: Who do you think you are!? NOVA: (pause) Holy Hippogriff! Is memory loss the side effect of the medicines? Ronnie! I am Nova Elbee. I am your sister. This is our nest. You just got out of quaran--RONNIE: Quit flapping around, Nova! I told you I didn’t want to meet anybody! Why did you send Cheel!? NOVA: Why, who am I to send Cheel anywhere? He is a kite of his own mind!!? RONNIE: This isn’t funny. Also, you can vacate the nest. NOVA: What!? You can’t do that! Where will I go? RONNIE: Weren’t you staying with Mina and Tyrion when I was quarantined? NOVA: Yes, but that was when … RONNIE: There you go. Now go. Get out! OUT! 33

CHEEL: Uh, that’s harsh! NOVA: Yep! You got to see a relatively calm Ronnie. CHEEL: It’s not the same around here without her. NOVA: Well, she isn’t the same either. I used to make sure she ate and took her medicines. But now she’s kicked me out. CHEEL: She’s got to come out someday; she can’t stay cooped up forever! NOVA: But the disease didn’t just take her feathers, it’s made her frail, too. CHEEL: Yeah, I saw that. NOVA: She’ll catch a flu if she’s not careful… MINA: Hello there you whiney twits! Look what I found! NOVA: Hey, Ronnie was painting that! How did you get it? MINA: Well, when you two failed at Mission Get-Ronnie-back-in-thegame, I decided to try my luck. Sure, I almost lost an eye, but it was worth it! CHEEL: This is gorgeous! NOVA: It has all the colours Ronnie’s feathers used to be… MINA: Exactly. CHEEL: Mina, are you thinking what I’m thinking? MINA: Ha! You can go on thinking, Cheel, I’ve already got a plan. 34

MINA: Hey Ronnie! RONNIE: AAARGH! Can’t a bird be left in peace! CHEEL: Your pretty painting just gave us an idea! MINA: No, your pretty painting gave ME an idea, and I told them about it. CHEEL: Fine. It was Mina’s idea. NOVA: We noticed how the painting is a record of all the colours your feathers used to be! RONNIE: Did you, now? Now this will make Cheel come up with some “New-age grunge” nonsense for his summer catalogue!? NOVA: At least hear him out, will you!? RONNIE: No no no no no, it’ll probably make him come with some Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease Survivor-sob story! Won’t you, Cheel!? That will make you sooooo popular! MINA: Ronnie… RONNIE: You flock can go find somebody else! I’m not the only one with this condition! NOVA: Exactly! You’re not the only one! You’re not the only featherless survivor in the Aviary! MINA: But, you’re the only one who’s a model. RONNIE: Ex-model. 35

CHEEL: Oh, there she goes. RONNIE: Don’t you roll your eyes at me! You don’t know how it feels like to be featherless! NOVA: Precisely! I don’t! But you do! You know what it’s like. MINA: You know what the others are going through! CHEEL: So, what we’re proposing is not a Sob-story. MINA: It will be a photoshoot, featuring you and your plumage captured against this beautiful canvas. NOVA: More like an awareness campaign. Reaching out to say “you’re not alone in this featherlessness”

36

37

RONNIE: And, I’ll only be doing my old job! NOVA: Yes. We’re calling it “Featherless, Fearless!” RONNIE: That’s an excellent idea! MINA: My idea! MY idea! ALL: We get it!

THE UNGRATEFUL TIGER BY PADMAPRIYA MURALI

PULI RAJ A hungry tiger trapped in a well

BANDRAN A helpful monkey who gets caught at the wrong place at the wrong time

MINA a lovebird model who likes telling stories

KHARGO A cheerful rabbit who useshis wit to escape tricky situations

39

MINA: Once upon a time in a mountain far, far away, was a village near a giant forest. In the forest, there lived a large, hungry tiger. Every night, he would sneak out of his cave into villagers’ homes, looking for food. In the morning, when the villagers woke up, they discovered that all their chickens and goats would be gone! This angered the villagers, so they decided to catch the large animal. That day, they decided to place traps all over the village. One trap was set here near this well. That night, the tiger came sneaking back, looking for more food. Oh no! He’s here! Let’s hideThe tiger began looking around for prey, when suddenly he smelled yummy chicken. PULI RAJ: Yummy chicken! Thanks! MINA: He turned to the well and saw a big box of chicken tied to the top, and tried to grab it with his arms when suddenly– PULI RAJ: AAAAAAAH MINA: He fell into the well! The big animal was shocked and trapped – scared! He began calling for help. 40

41

PULI RAJ: Help me! Somebody help me! MINA: When suddenly, a young monkey appeared. PULI RAJ: Help! I’m stuck! BANDRAN: Did I hear someone? PULI RAJ: Help me! I’m stuck in the well! BANDRAN: Who’s there? PULI RAJ: Oh, just get me out, already! BANDRAN: It’s a tiger!! How did you end up in here? MINA: By this point, the tiger knew that the monkey was not from the village. PULI RAJ: You don’t know the people in this village! You see, they want to catch me and steal my skin and my – ah - sharp teeth! So they decided to trap me in this well! BANDRAN: That’s so rude of them! PULI RAJ: Yes! They also spoke about making.. tiger soup! (slurp) BANDRAN: Tiger soup!? That’s so crazy! PULI RAJ: Please save me! If you don’t get me out of here soon, the sun will rise and the villagers will wake up and they will find me here! 42

BANDRAN: (with urgency) Alright, alright! I’ll see what I can do. Wait. What do I do? (Mina gives him a stick) Ah! Thank you! PULI RAJ: Hey! We don’t have all night, you know, so..whateverit is you are doing, just be faster! BANDRAN: (irritated) You are quite mean for..for a tiger who needs.. a favour! PULI RAJ: (laughs) What I meant to say is, why not be a little faster? The sooner this is over with, the sooner you can go sleep! I’m sure a monkey like you would be very tired! BANDRAN: Yeah, I’m always tired! But what to do, I have to get used to it. Ok..here, grab this stick and come out of the well. BANDRAN: (exhausted after helping the tiger) Never thought a tiger would be this heavy. PULI RAJ: Thanks for the help though! BANDRAN: That’s okay, it’s okay. PULI RAJ: I need you to help me again. You see, this cold well has made me tired, cold and hungry. Do you have any food with you? BANDRAN: Mhmm. Nope. PULI RAJ: Ah, that’s too bad. But do you know what would be really, really yummy? BANDRAN: What? PULI RAJ: A big, fat (looks at Bandran) – not so fat, tired monkey! 43

44

BANDRAN: (scared) You aren’t talking about me, are you? I’m actually thin, a bag of bones! People think this is fat? Please, please, please don’t eat me! PULI RAJ: But what else will I eat?! BANDRAN: I saved your life! PULI RAJ: So?! BANDRAN: You said they will make tiger soup out of you! PULI RAJ: I could use some monkey soup... but look here, I would have done anything, I would have said anything for you to get me out of that well - and since you did, you are my dinner. It’s your fault for having trusted a tiger. Now let me eat your arm! MINA: By this time the monkey thought that all was over.

45

MINA: But then suddenly, a rabbit hopped out of his hole to see what was going on! KHARGO: Hey! Hey you! What’s going on? PULI RAJ: It’s that annoying little rabbit, isn’t it?! Leave us alone, Mr. Rabbit. This monkey is my dinner tonight. KHARGO: You? You usually don’t generally catch monkeys- how did you trap this one? BANDRAN: (pleadingly) Well, he fell into the well, I saved his life and he wants to eat me! How is that fair? KHARGO: That is not fair! You should let him go! PULI RAJ: No I won’t –I will eat his arm! It wasn’t my fault that he trusted a tiger! BANDRAN: But I saved your life! PULI RAJ: Why save me, if you are going to let me starve anyway? 46

KHARGO: Hmm... no no no, it’s not fair for you to eat his arm. (Thinks) Why don’t you show me how he saved you. Then, you can eat his arm AND his leg! BANDRAN: WHAT?! An arm and my leg?? Please, I’ll go away! PULI RAJ: (laughs) So, I was stuck in the well (points to it) and I asked for help and this guy here dropped in a stick, and dragged me out. KHARGO: How deep were you in the well? Hmm... that’s pretty deep? PULI RAJ: Yes. Now, don’t I get to eat his arms? AAAAH! KHARGO: HOLD ON! That’s a pretty deep well, and this is a very small stick! How did he save you? PULI RAJ: I was all the way down there, and he threw the stick in and he dragged me out and that’s exactly KHARGO: Mhmmmm…until you tell me what exactly went down there, I don’t think you can eat his arm and his leg! PULI RAJ: Alright! I will show you. KHARGO: You will? Mr. Tiger, you want this? (shows stick) 47

48

PULI RAJ: You see me now? KHARGO: Yes, yes. Err..Are you okay? PULI RAJ: Exactly. Now don’t I get to eat his arms and leg? KHARGO: Yes, you deserve it. BANDRAN: (stage whisper) Thank you! Thank you! PULI RAJ: Good. Now let me out. KHARGO: I’m afraid I can’t, Mr. Tiger. PULI RAJ: Why not? KHARGO: Well, you see, my arms are too small. And the monkey has left. PULI RAJ: The monkey has left?! You- you cheated me!! How dare you?! KHARGO: Shh! Stop making all that noise, you’ll wake up the villagers. MINA: And so, the clever little rabbit saved the young monkey’s life from the ungrateful tiger. Isn’t that wonderful? Oh, Mr. Rabbit- you were amazing, saving that young monkey’s life! Congratulations! KHARGO: Thank you. 49
