WELCOME MESSAGE

I would like to start by paying my tribute and respect to Patrick Ortanez. Patrick was not only a colleague but also a good friend and a passionate leader for CHC Manila and his legacy will continue for the time to come. Patrick’s passing away a ay was aw a complete shock for all of us and his cheerful voice and positive attitude will certainly be missed. I continue to pray for the wellbeing of his family and loved ones. I am sure NFM leadership team will continue the great work he had started and will build on the strong foundation set by Patrick. He will always remain in our thoughts and prayers.

I trust everyone is doing well during this extended period of GCQ, which is a difficult personal time for many of us.. Personally, staying healthy through exercise, engaging in motivational readings/videos, and maintaining productive hobbies are my go-to tactics to balance things out. These endeavors have a positive effect on me as well as the people around me and I hope you feel motivated to do similar activities. This is high time to discuss Resilience (the Newsletter’s theme), as we can all benefit from reaching out and interacting with each other about how we can work around current isolation related challenges. I’m very happy to share that we have started work on positive changes in office infrastructure regarding both upgrades and branding. Not only will this help us in the new normal when we’re back in the office, but also we aim to use this to strengthen our Change Healthcare Manila pride and values as one company. Additionally, the Global Change Healthcare team has worked with the local leadership team to launch Change Healthcare’s Retirement program in the Philippines which is a great benefit to all of our employees. I am sure you have seen the details and you all are as excited as I am with the launch of this fantastic benefit.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Why Mental awareness activities in a company important? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health effects every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood, that is why to have an activity for mental health in your organization is very important. Last July 29, 2020, Change Healthcare had a Mental Wellness Webinar for the employees to cope up on the effects of the pandemic. We can admit that this pandemic had effect in our wellbeing in different ways. I asked for someone’s personal takeaways about the mental awareness activity and I’m very lucky that I got Miss Niña Beltran from HR to share her personal takeaways. As per her, both sessions presented statistics about mental health based on WHO's numbers, how many lives are taken each day due to mental health illness. Definition of a healthy/sound mind, types of mental illness, etc. Hotlines/organizations offering help when it comes to mental health were shared. The highlights of both sessions are the tips on how to maintain a sound mind in this time of pandemic.

Practical tips were shared such as:

#01

#02

#03

#04

maintaining healthy personal hygiene even if everyone is at home

maintaining a balanced and healthy diet

maintaining healthy personal hygiene even if everyone is at home

call/check on friends and families during free time

#05

#06

exercising regularly using available tools at home and tutorials available online

revisiting your hobby/interest apart from the daily work that you do to prevent burnout

#07 taking breaks on social media as it might be overwhelming at times/verifying news that you see online (refer to reputable sites/news channels)

Other general tips given are being resilient which is an extraordinary trait of every Filipino, acknowledging your state of mental health and being open on how to overcome/treat them, and removing stigma on those who are experiencing mental health illness. It is not just enough that we have a healthy body, it is also important to have a healthy mind to help us cope with anything that may come our way. CHPI iCOM Manila Newsletter December 2020

LIFE SESSION:

By: Marie Jennyvee P. San Jose

DE A LING WI T H CR I S IS OR BE I N G RE S I LIENT CHPI iCOM Manila Newsletter December 2020

After a successful first Life Session Webinar last July, another awesome webinar session has recently concluded! This webinar series are coordinated by Intellicare in partnership with Microsourcing and Change Healthcare HR, a proof that there is no slowing down in providing support for Change Healthcare employees. With a really timely topic about resilience and a reputable occupational medicine physician as the speaker, it is not surprising the two sessions scheduled last September 29, 2020 were packed with employees who have attended and registered for the webinar. Dr. Nicole Anne Buenavista, a Certified Lifestyle Medicine Specialist who brought her extensive experience in wellness and medical programs from various institutions both Philippines and abroad, made an impactful introduction by kicking off on what to expect in the webinar. Several topics were covered all throughout the 1-hr session: from stress and mental health, nutrition, physical activity, sleep health to positive psychology and connectivity. The webinar session has provided scientifically proven ways to cope during crisis, especially during this pandemic. It is widely known that dealing with crisis has no single perfect formula for everyone. Instead, an individual must manage it holistically. This was reiterated greatly during the session, various ways were shared. Here’s the best and most impactful tips mentioned:

Cope with stress by making time to unwind. Try to do activities and find new hobbies you enjoy. Connect with others by talking to people you trust. Quick catch up about your concerns and how you are feeling will be a huge help that you imagine.

03

WELLNESS & FITNESS

Filter what you feed your mind. Take break from watching, reading and listening to negative news including social media. This can greatly affect your mental health and can potentially trigger anxiety and overthinking.

Take care of you body by taking deep long breaths, stretching and meditation. Try to eat a healthy and well-balanced meals. Try to move more through regular exercise.

Be mindful of what you eat. Cheat days okay as long as you do it moderately. Watch out overindulging in processed foods as it can directly harm your health in the long term. Include more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole foods in your diet and don’t forget to drink more water.

Establish a regular sleep cycle for bedtime and wake time. Lack of sleep can make a person irritable, drag down energy level and cause or worsen mood or depression. Eliminate late night snacking and minimize bedroom noise and screen time at least an hour before bedtime to promote better sleep quality.

Practice positive psychology. Train your mind to always look for the good and brighter side of things. This has more positive effects, not just in your mood, but on your overall health. Studies show that cultivating positive emotions promotes healthier, longer lives, stronger immune systems, better decision making and reduced risks of death from cardiovascular issues.

Reflect and refocus. Practice mindfulness throughout the day. Meditate 20 minutes daily. Engage in acts of kindness. Do activities that produce sense of flow regularly.

With almost eight months being in the “new normal”, each of us might have already established and developed our own new routine to adapt during this pandemic. Being resilient during these trying times could be easier said than done. Each of us could be fighting a battle inside us and struggling to win those battle can be a little overwhelming. Juggling work and personal lives can consume you, so don’t forget to be kind to yourself; pause and stop a while, get some sunlight, binge watch your favorite series, take a long shower or warm bath, walk your dog, have some catch up conversation with your family, cuddle with your loved ones. Go take that break and don’t be sorry, because you deserve it. Once your done, get back to work feeling more energized and inspired. You’ll be amazed how much more tasks you can complete. When enough healthy, socially connected and prepared people come together, they form a community that is often better able to withstand, manage and recover from crisis. Let’s find opportunity in this crisis; opportunity to be grateful, opportunity to grow, opportunity to reconnect with self and opportunity to be hopeful and resilient.

AT THE HELM RESILIENCE OF ADVERSITY At a young age, life threw me its first awakening. The adversity of losing our Home. Our house in Pampanga was destroyed by the lahar of Pinatubo and the massive flooding that transpired in the year of 1993. At that time, I was six years old, I vividly remember that I was on my knees with an empty can of milk on my hand, scraping our living floor full of mud and flood water and throwing it outside our garage so as to lessen the flooding inside our house. We were not able to save anything in our house due to that devasting calamity. All our appliances, furniture, photo albums were ruined overnight. It’s as seem our own nature wiped all our sentimental memories of the house, we all once called “HOME.” It is from there where we started renting an apartment at San Fernando Pampanga and start a new life.

RESILIENCE OF STUDYING AND WINNING My main motivation to study hard was to have a good and successful life. I went to the United States with my family at the age of 12 years old, right when I graduated Grade VI. It is in the United States where I studied from Middle School to College. I aspired to study hard in hopes not only to live the “American Dream”, but also to attain all my dreams and aspirations in life. I have told myself that by the time I graduated from college, I will ask my father, who was the breadwinner of the family, to stop working and let us give back all the hard work and sacrifices both my parents has done for us.

TIMES OF

By: Mitch Darios

As I look back, by experiencing such adversities at a young age, I took my life experiences back in the Philippines as my advantage with my colleagues in the U.S for me to persevere twice harder. After taking the entrance exam in high school, I was placed in a Magnet School, for gifted students. It is through here that I was able to start taking college classes, while I was completing my high school credits. By the time I graduated high school, I have already obtained my First college Degree and graduated Cum Laude of our Class. For the remaining 5 years in College, I decided to take two Bachelor Degrees. B.S in Management and B.S in Finance. Many have questioned its feasibility, but that’s what made it more exciting and challenging for me. It made me become determined to strive harder and let all those who doubted me wrong! In 2011, I graduated with two Bachelor Degrees with honors!

AT THE HELM

RESILIENCE OF LOSS AND PAIN At the age of 22 years old, I suddenly lost my father. It was a sudden death that neither anyone of us in the family was prepared to take. He died of Colon Cancer Stage 4 last 2010. We received a phone call from the hospital in the middle of the night to rush to the hospital where my father was admitted. Little did we know that my father sought a surgery consent without our knowledge, wherein he died of cardiac arrest in the middle of the surgery. Nothing was more painful to have seen our father in a hospital bed, took his last tear drop as soon as we arrived, hoping all our whispers of farewell to him were heard by him while holding his cold bare hands. It was a time of extreme pain, but it was also a wakeup call for me to be resilient and be strong not only for myself, but also for my siblings and mother as I finish up my senior year in College.

RESILIENCE TO RISE Going back to the Philippines at the age of 24 was never a hard decision for me as I know I will be successful wherever I will be. I knew few friends from grade school, yet the only fear I had was to navigate my way to my country I barely knew. Although it was a rough start finding my way around the Metro, I was able to find a new work in one of the biggest BPO companies. I finally found a second home. I started as a Finance Analyst and worked my way up the leadership ladder by being assertive, determined and focused on my dream. To become a Manager like my Dad. At the age of 28, I was finally promoted to a Manager role then a Senior Manager at the age of 30 years old. As I reflect on this, By: surely Mitch Darios attaining my dream did not happen overnight. It took a lot of perseverance, determination, prayers and focus as I attained that goal in life.

RESILIENCE OF COURAGE AND FAITH If there was another momentous event that rocked me to my core was probably when my Mom had to undergo Angioplasty as soon as we moved back to the Philippines. It was the time I was barely starting my career and save up for my future. It was an unforgettable experience for me as I was alone at St. Lukes’s Hospital Quezon City and was called by her Cardiologist doctor to enter the Operating Room in the middle of her Angiogram procedure. It was there I saw my mom lying on the Operating table with life hanging 50/50. Her cardiologist was asking for my approval to start conducting angioplasty operation that will entail 3 stents, each stent amounting to P350,000 each. At the age of 26, barely starting my life, I stared at my mother’s cardiologist with blank eyes. Where will I get that huge amount of money?! With hospital bills and doctor’s fees on the rise, I had to remain strong not only for my mom but for myself while both of my siblings were in the US. Through it all, there were only two things I held onto. It was my courage to fight back in this adversity and second, my strong faith in God. My mother’s life was extended! As I look back in it, perhaps there was reason and God’s plan why we both went back to the Philippines!

RESILIENCE TO SUCCEED

How do I define success? For me, success does not define a title, but the mere notion of happiness and contentment in life. Job title will always be the icing on the cake. My parents have always told me to respect everyone around me regardless of what they do in life. It is a virtue I still instill in me today and everywhere I go. In work, it is inevitable for things to go astray the way you plan it to, but that’s okay! No one is perfect. It is through mistakes we learn and become wiser! In life, you must stay curious and never stop learning. It is through continuous learning you will be contented with what you have. A life that is lived beyond office work and a life lived fully surrounded with family and friends who loves you and cares for you. That’s all that matters!

Any Message to our fellow Change Healthcare Employees: I know my story is as compelling as yours and to the person sitting beside you... and that is the beauty of life! We all have different unique stories that molded us to the person who we are today. It is always important to look at life not only in a manner you see it, but also see it in the spectrum of others. It is through understanding and respecting each other’s opinion and way of life, we mature, become more empathetic and humble regardless where life takes you. I do hope my story brings comfort on the statement that “In the middle of every difficulty lies an opportunity.” At one point of our lives, there will be times of extreme hopelessness, weariness and uncertainty; yet always remember to have faith in God and face the world back with optimism and hope. Continue in turning all your dreams into reality for nothing is impossible for those who keeps trying! As there is a saying, “Flow like water... Hit strongly if hurdles come along your way... Stay calm and Keep moving ahead...!

CAREER & DEVELOPMENT

This two day course lasted for 3 hours each, wherein we discussed a Project Manager’s Roles and Responsibilities, Differences of Project Management vs Operations Management, Project Management Methodologies, Project Management Tools and Techniques combined with individual and group activities to teach all participants how to create a Project Charter and Project Plan documents. Our class started at 7:00PM sharp with an introduction of our guest, Vice President of CHC Manila, Rahul Singh. Rahul welcomed everyone on this very first and exciting initiative and provided our participants some helpful tips how they can apply certain project management traits at work. This was followed with an individual ice breaker from each participants wherein they spoke about their background, business unit and what they look forward in learning in class.

What are the highlights I can consider for the class? For me, nothing is more rewarding than seeing all partipants immerse, learn and apply all the Project Management methodologies and applications using the Tools we discussed throughout the two day course. With video cameras ON throughout the training, it was such a great sight to see that everyone were paying close attention on my lectures and taking notes! There were also questions or clarifications raised throughout the lectures and I was happy to share real life common and complex scenarios in the realm of Project Management based from my experience throughout these years. Lastly, I was able to share with them a glimpse of a life of a Project Manager in different spectrums. Pros and Cons. Advantages and Challenges. Success and Lessons Learned. After each presentation, everyone in the class gave feedback and constructive criticism based on each group’s approach. The beauty of this approach is that all participants were able to see that handling Projects and implementing Transition Project Management is an art. It does not follow a straight forward approach. Instead, Project Managers focuses on timelines, scope and cost at all times. You must have the ability to adapt and strategize regardless of any situation. It is an art where there may be 1000 different ways of approach, but what matters is the result and that is to successfully launch the project seamlessly on time and on scope.

July 08, 2020 marks a new milestone for Change Healthcare Manila as we conducted the very first cross function virtual training that promotes continous Career and Development for our employees within the company. This two-day session called “The Accidental Project Manager” class covers the Introductory course on Managing Simple Projects, which can be applied with your account’s internal project initiatives and personal engagements. Class was facilitated by yours truly with a total of nine participants nominated by each respective Directors per business unit. Participants were as follows: Ronan Soyao (Government Services), Emman Merced (Enterprise Imaging), Mark Rea (Enterprise Imaging), Jacob Lorenzo (Government Services), Jeramy Fabregas (Government Services), Wai Yam Sham (NFM), Raphael Alino (NFM), Maria Redillas (Finance) and Joanna Miranda (Executive Assistant).

CAREER & DEVELOPMENT

On the other hand, one of the challenges we encountered on the first day was the lack of time as we had to cover a lot of materials. As this was a pilot class, facilitating it for only three hours versus the usual eight hours classroom setup indeed imposed a challenge for me. Hence through this first session, we are able to determine the ideal number of hours and days to conduct the virtual class without infringing employees’ Production hours. On a brighter note, class survey results showed that all participants answered 100% that they highly recommend this class with their colleages at work. In addition, they also look forward in having more classes as such in the future that promotes career growth and development.

The main highlight I would consider for me was the second day session where I have broken down all 9 participants into 4 Groups and each group had to showcase their application of tools and methologies on a project of their choice. I partnered each employee with a different business unit from them so they can get to know each other and collaborate with different ideas. All four groups presented their Projects to the whole class for 15 minutes each.

CHPI iCOM Manila Newsletter December 2020

In conclusion, I cannot contest enough how fulfilling it is to share my knowledge in Project Management for I myself was once a nomad, who aspires to be one. As a Finance and Management graduate, I never have thought that doing Project Management is where my heart is. It is now my passion and it is now the new art I love. By being a Transition Manager, I was able to work with clients and professionals from different walks of life. I was able to travel internationally and domestically, while at the same time, seeing the accounts and projects getting launched successfully. As I have mentioned in class, “There will never be a “Perfect Transition” project. Instead, there will often be hiccups or unforesseable circumstances that may come up and challenge you. It is through identifying these factors ahead of time and learning from your past mistakes that you become more agile and expert in what you do.” I do look forward in cascading this class to more of our employees on the coming months ahead and share the very interesting world of Project Management. Hope to see you next in Class!!

An Animal Enthusiast is how I would define myself. I have this affectional relationship between my pets. My wide concern about their well-being is well known by my family.

So why do I have pets? Simply because they were introduced to me during my childhood and these pets make me a responsible man at an early age which I am now teaching my daughter. Even though my passion to love animals started during my childhood, it is only during this Global pandemic that my interest for exotic animals begun.

I am now keeping tarantulas, scorpions, flowerhorns and betta fish, super worms, cultured cockroaches, and a tortoise, these are aside from my long time pets like dogs (Jack Russel Terrier, Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Mongrel, Belgian Malinois, Golden Retriever, and my all-time favorite dog Pitbull) But my best stress reliever and my ever first pet are my racing pigeons. Why do I choose these animals as my pets? I researched about them and it interests me to love them unquestionably. Hottentotta hottentotta occurs in a wide area in western and central Africa. This type of scorpion is rather calm, they will only threaten when disturbed over a longer period.

Mexican Fireleg is a New World terrestrial known for its black abdomen and bright red or orange legs. As far as feeding, I feed my spiderling prefilled small crickets or roaches twice a week until the refuse food during premolt.

Flowerhorn cichlids are ornamental aquarium fish noted for their vivid colors and the distinctively shaped heads for which they are named. Their head protuberance, or kok, is formally termed a nuchal hump.

Known for their bright, beautiful coloration and elaborate fin displays, betta fish, more accurately called “Siamese fighting fish,” are a common household pet. These little beauties require specific care to ensure that they stay happy and healthy.

Sulcata tortoise are a hearty tortoise from the deserts of Africa. The do extremely well locally given proper care. They start off small and cute but grow to weights of over 75 pounds with exceptionally large individuals weighing more than 100 pounds. The Sulcata tortoise is about 50– 150 years, though they can live much longer.

I came up with the decision to keep exotic animals during the lockdown to keep myself busy on learning new perspective about these species , and not to just sit and relax at home after work shift. It also gives me an opportunity to share to my wife and daughter my new found specie and make a routine conversation about them, more family talks and quality time together during quarantine times.

These pets of mine have brought me pride (because my Racing Pigeons and Pitbull have won competitions before) joy all the time and of course companionship. I cannot define how can they satisfy my wholeness as a person.

It is never easy to understand someone like me who has this kind of interest or passion for animals. It requires a lot of patience, time and effort to give them attention, build rapport with them and making yourself even more responsible to not let them be hungry and dirty just like your own child. They will also take part of your financial budget, so keeping yourself thrifty is a must to keep them alive. And to further enhanced my skill and give my dogs essential training for their basic obedience, protection, search and rescue. I joined the Valor Working Dog Club every Sunday morning at training camp in Antipolo. One of my privileges in joining the training club is I got to be with different professionals from whom I gained a lot of shared knowledge from their fields (Lawyers, Doctors, Soldiers, Businessman coming from afar and nearby areas. The training is spearheaded by Human Remains Detection and Search & Rescue Certified Trainers.

Keep in mind to be a responsible pet owner you should consider the following: Our pets need a regular time to exercise – Always remember a tired dog is a happy dog because the dog was able to release its excess energy, have your pets checked by a registered veterinarian to make sure they are healthy, socialize your pets – bring them to other places and introduce them to other animals to avoid aggression and build self confidence, feed them properly – give them the best food that your money can buy, Train them – make them do what they love and let them know their purpose and last is to love them unconditionally.

It’s not about how expensive your pets but it’s all about how you care for them.
