At the core of our workforce engagement and workforce development approach is a strategic alliance with a robust group of pre-apprentice organizations and community associations that have a sustainable pipeline of talented and diverse individuals (including women and minority lowincome housing residents, ex-offenders, youth and seniors) that are looking to break into the construction trades. These partnerships are aimed at creating long-term, sustainable, union trade apprenticeships that will be a positive catalyst of change for these individuals. APP has introduced each of these organizations to our subcontractors via a series of webinars to promote leveraging these organizations to connect with local, female and minority individuals looking for new hire opportunities. In addition to these webinars, APP individually met with each of our prime contractors at T5 to discuss their strategy for maximizing local workforce involvement on this project. Finally, APP has been scheduling and participating in site visits between our T5 subcontractors and our pre-apprentice partners so that our subcontractors get an opportunity to meet with leadership of these organizations and speak with their students in hopes that they will partner with these organizations to find more new hire opportunities for their students.

How did you get interested in construction? I’ve always had an interest and enjoyed working with my hands.

How did you connect with Revolution Workshop? I am always helping at my church and my Pastor suggested that I attend an event that Revolution was hosting the following week. At first I wasn’t sure but I am so happy I decided to do it.

What was your biggest takeaway from the job training program at Revolution? For technical skills, I had used simple hand tools but through the program I learned the correct way to use them as well as power tools. I was a little apprehensive but with Revolution’s help and enough time practicing, I gained a ton of confidence using them. And for soft skills, the mock interviews were really helpful. We were given immediate feedback with areas of improvement so the more I practiced, the more confident and prepared I felt. We also did resume prep which was really helpful. What advice would you give to someone else that is thinking about going into construction? If you show up early and you work hard, you will be fine. And these skills aren’t just for work, I’m working on my own projects and am helping family and friends when they need it. What advice would you give to someone else that is thinking about contacting Revolution Workshop? Revolution is a family. When you commit to the training program, you are treated as part of that family. It’s a safe space to learn and ask as many questions as you can with out feeling intimidated. They not only train you to do the job, but they feed you, they will assist you with getting a driver license, and show you how to open a checking and savings account - everyone at Revolution is just great.
