THE BREW’S GUEST WHISPERER What’s Brewing? Unless you’re spending too much time under a rock (which is totally awesome due to the cool temps and high likelihood of solace), things are poppin’ and have been for awhile. It’s easy to say, but finding time to recharge and catch a breather is key to surviving the mad dash. Spring is close and getting outside means new activities and loads of light - which I crave. At the end of February, BG announced our annual All Staff Retreat is back on! This is exciting for a few different reasons. Over the last two years, no matter how well you’ve individually handled the pandemic, there was probably at least a few moments of thinking “WTH and will this ever end?” Though I don’t have a crystal ball (or consult an astrologer), the stars seem to be realigning and the tide seems to be turning. Instead of hearing about the pandemic, folks in addition to scientists are folding the world “endemic” into our everyday vernacular. There’s hope in that and in part, that’s what the All Staff Retreat offers - a renewal. Re-engaging in person BG’ers to strengthen our teams; exploring development opportunities, and re-igniting a curiosity of new things and people. Perhaps the event can offer inspiration too, individually and collectively, that we can turn into action. Planning is in full swing for the annual gathering and BG is structuring the days leading up to the Thursday event to maximize BG’ers being in one place. How can we be more of a cohesive team? What continued refinement do standards need? How do we evolve as consultants? And, what other things will help in client, project, and team collaboration? The rejuvenation of being together as a collective cannot be understated, even for those who may want to simply put their heads down and plow through work. Yes, that’s important; as is getting reacquainted in person with those we spend a good chunk of time with every day. So, mark your calendars for Thursday, May 26 and gear up for an exciting day!

march march march march The madness is here – no, not the lunacy of basketball or even the settling of debts associated with the Ides of March. No, it’s National Nutrition month and it’s a great way to establish (or re-establish) healthier habits. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sponsors the annual campaign of education and awareness to bring attention to the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activities habits. Most of us know what we should do, but may struggle with the actual and practical application of doing it and/or doing it constantly. I mean, who hasn’t Jones-ed for milk chocolate versus dark chocolate; finding that you’ve plowed your way to the bottom of the chip bag; not having enough veggies at dinner; or skipping that walk or run because it’s just too cold/hot. The month isn’t about shaming or scolding you into perfection, but offering helpful tips to improve your habits – sometimes small steps lead to big leaps and a healthier you.

Week 1:

Eat a variety of nutritious foods. Use all food groups, read nutrition fact labels & eat fave cultural foods and celebrate traditions.

A quick and easy way to Week 2:

A Local Watering Hole – Bart & Yeti’s Bar Where tall tales and waggin’ tails come to meet. Nothing goes better together than good people, good food, cold beer, and friendly canines. This is likely the mantra of Sam Gale (AVN) whose recommendation this month is one of Vail’s last standing bars from the fun and fabulous 1980s. Bart & Yeti’s was the namesake from Bart, Sam’s dad’s best friend’s dog. As the story goes: Bart was there for the love connection for President Gerald Ford’s dog Liberty to bring into existence a new puppy for Henry Kissinger. Not to be outdone with that political prowess, Sam’s own golden retrievers, Eli and Bucky are frequent patrons as she spent many 4th of July parades cheering from Bart & Yeti’s patio. A day of skiing is not complete without an aprés Blue Moon on a leather bar stool sitting next to Packy. A bonus is enjoying Normy Style wings, a dry-rubbed and barbecued delicacy that is crispy and flavorful without the mess. If you think you’ve had your favorite wings, Sam challenges you to try Normy’s and she’ll even buy you an order at the bar! All Aboard – Ticket To Ride Criss-crossing the tracks of America. If you’re a reader of the Brew, you may remember back a year ago during her first staff pick how competitive Jenna Durdy (DEN) is – and the only thing that’s changed this time around is her last name! With the similar sentiment of her original statement of her passion of playing games, Jenna continues her “love to crush her family” and recommends Ticket to Ride for her second recommendation. With elegantly simple gameplay, Ticket to Ride is a great board game that most can learn in under 15 minutes. Like the railroad tycoons of the 19th century, players claim routes across North America and draw cards to help build long routes by connecting distant cities. Players earn points by completing routes and the player who builds the longest continuous route earns extra points. It’s a thrilling game, that is crowd-pleasing; well, maybe that depends on who you’ll playing with – if it’s Jenna, she’s out to win and may make you cry. March 2022 |

An extra hour of light, spring forward

No matter what side you fall on, the debate on changing time rages on. And, doesn’t change the fact that we’ll gain one more hour of daylight there’s nothing wrong with that!

WHAT’S YOUR

IT HAPPENED IN HISTORY

The formal term is disc jockey, coined by Walter Winchell in the 1930s and first appeared in print in a 1941 Variety mag. It was used to describe those who played phonograph records on the radio. Easily abbreviated to DJ, the history may not matter to BG’s inhouse DJ, Camille Summers (DEN), but they sure know how to “spin a record”. As the practice of deejaying has evolved over the decades, the equipment has changed, but not the final product - giving an audience great music to listen and dance a night away. Camille’s hobby of deejaying has been building for a little over two years. They got started when at a party, the music sets their friends played really inspired Camille to broaden their musical horizons. This eventually led to learning how to DJ their own mixes. With a love that captures the incredible feeling of playing loud music at a party and really cultivating the atmosphere for guests, Camille has fun watching friends go crazy dancing to mixes and discovering new music. It’s not only fun, but rewarding, and Camille continues to build their reper toire and someday would like to be good enough to be an opening act at a local concert. Check out Camille in DJ mode. Here they are throwing down tunes at a blacklight party where there was lots of UV body paint and glow sticks. Sounds like an electrifying time.

March 31, 1889 | Dedicated in Paris and presided over by the tower ’s designer, Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower was mostly celebrated as a monument built in honor of the centenary of the French Revolution. The open-lattice, wrought-iron design was selected during a competition and Eiffel, a well-known bridge builder shared his mastery of metal construction. On his resume? The recently erected Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Despite some skepticism, he completed the tower under budget and in just two years. Only one worker lost his life during construction which was remarkable at the time for a project of that magnitude. The light, airy structure, was a technological wonder and within years became an architectural masterpiece. Nicknamed “Iron Lady” at the opening was reddish-brown; 10 years later was painted yellow; and now painted every seven years using 60 tons of paint in three shades, is more brown. Elevators ascend the structure on a curve and Eiffel worked with the Otis Elevator Company to design the tower’s famous glasscage elevators. The Eiffel Tower The Eiffel remained the Tower is 984’ tall, w o r l d ’s t a l l e s t supported m a n - m a d e by four structure for over masonry 40 years only to piers. be replaced by the Chrysler Building in N e w Yo r k in 1930.
