STORIES OF A STORYTELLER

AN INNOVATIVE TAKE ON COVER LETTERS BY: MACKENZIE JONES

MACKENZIE JONES: CURIOUS AND INVESTIGATIVE

Hi Julie, boring cover let ters got you down? I know. This cover letter approach is pretty unorthodox and breaks a few rules. That’s something your agency and I have in common; we refuse to let rules constrict our creativity. Since I am applying for your innovation lab internship I figured I might as well be a little innovative in my approach. Advertising is all about creating brand and product stories that consumers can identify with. Showing them through short moments why they should believe in a product or brand. In three short humorous stories, I will show you what traits I possess, how my experiences have made me a better advertiser and why you should hire me as your innovation lab intern this summer. I was made to tell stories in innovative ways. I hope this summer you’ll allow me to tell your client’s stories too.

“Big Bird Hates Me”

Big Bird does not like me. I can’t be certain, but I believe it is because, as a four-year-old, I evacuated 10,000 people from his Sesame Street Live show. That day, while my mother’s back was turned, I had found an unusual red and white lever on the wall. I had seen these in Scooby-Doo, so I knew all levers lead to secret passageways. Without hesitation, I reached out and pulled the lever down. While the alarms sounded, I was swept off my feet and carried out to the car. As I’ve grown older, my inquisitiveness has stayed the same. Only now, instead of a lever, my curiosity is sparked by people. This year, I was able to explore my curiosity of people by serving as an account planner on the research side of UNL’s National Student Advertising Competition team. In running focus groups, gathering and presenting consumer insights, creating and executing national surveys and evaluating our campaigns reach I found a new passion. That passion is devising ways to uniquely and innovatively connect to a consumer in a competitive market. This passion and experience give me confidence that I would succeed as an innovation lab intern for Nashville’s best agency: redpepper.

MACKENZIE JONES: NATURAL BORN ADVERTISER

MACKENZIE JONES: BOLD GO-GETTER

“My First Campaign”

“Dear Diary”

My dad used to say I had a great future in hostage negotiation, I was very persuasive. So, when my parents told me adopting the pet I wanted wasn’t possible I launched my very first campaign. I employed stealth marketing by scattering photos around of their childhood pets. I conducted market research by asking my grandparents for stories of my parents with their family pet. Setting up my poster board with charts and creative executions I began my pitch. After my concluding statements, my mom sighed and said, “Mackenzie, we decided we are willing to buy a dog, but a tiger is simply out of the question.”

I have always had a “go big or go home” attitude when it comes to going after something I want. Naturally, my second-grade crush was no different. On February 14th, 2004 I came to school with the lyrics to a Brittney Spears song written on a page of my diary. On our way back in from recess, I pulled him aside, handed him the note and sang the song. His response? “Oh. Does this mean I can have another box of candy hearts?”

At a young age, I recognized the importance of understanding how to reach your target audience. I believe, just like products, everyone has a story. As an intern at the University of Nebraska Foundation, I was able to facilitate donations by fostering donor connections through stories I wrote regarding certain funds. My love for understanding what drives consumer purchasing allows me to find new and creative ways to reach them where they already are. I believe this trait makes me uniquely fit to serve redpepper’s innovation lab team this summer.

Although I lost a bit of pride that day, I did not lose my drive to go above and beyond to attain my goals. This was apparent during my first internship as a sophomore at the Nebraska Press Association. During this internship, I spent hours creating a selection of redesign ideas for an old advertisement that our company printed in papers across the state. If I had not taken a risk and searched for opportunities outside of what my boss assigned me, my advertisement would not currently be published in over 70 newspapers on a weekly basis. My ability to advocate for myself and create new opportunities has served me well throughout my career. This ability to share my ideas proves I will not shy away from sharing my thoughts and findings while creating a campaign with redpepper this summer. To see my published advertisement click here.

I ’d love to join your stor y. I’m glad you stuck around to read my stories. Even living eleven hours away, I know redpepper is a place I could grow and call home. Every campaign your agency creates is incredible, but the work your innovation team has done lit a fire inside me to be a little innovative myself. Your agency offers something incredibly special that is very hard to find. It isn’t just a place to work from nine to five; it’s a place to grow and explore new possibilities, for clients and creatives alike. It would be a privilege to meet with redpepper and discuss how I can use my experiences and passion for people to help redpepper continue to shape how we define innovation in the advertising world.
