Celebration Stories “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails. ” - Thomas S. Monson

At a time when the winds have been unpredictable and blowing ever so fiercely, InReach has been fortunate to have program participants, staff and families that have all adjusted their sails and persevered through the storms of the pandemic. To bring a smile to your face and remind you of the spirit of tenacity possessed by InReach’s very special people, we would like to share with you a few of what we affectionately refer to as our “Celebration Stories” that have taken place during the crazy days of COVID. LD has worked at the Monroe Food Lion for 27 years where he has been a

Program participant LD and friend.

bagger, beloved by all his customers. Late last year, he suddenly went completely blind in less than a week’s time. LD was determined to keep working at Food Lion, even in the face of his seemingly insurmountable challenge. His resilience touched the hearts of all of his co-workers, including his manager, who provided adaptations for LD to work as a greeter at the store. The staff now assist him in traveling up and down the aisles in his wheelchair, greeting all the customers, all of whom say LD “makes their day!” While recent national news statistics indicate over 80% of individuals with

intellectual and/or developmental disabilities are currently unemployed, Henry has bucked the trend! He has worked for nearly 30 years at Goodwill catching the city bus to and from work. His staff have noted he’s an admired member of the Goodwill team, an old-timer who is able to show others the ropes. Thirty years! How amazing is that?

KB moved from Linwood, North Carolina to Charlotte a little over two years

ago. When she moved into an InReach group residence, KB weighed 224 pounds, had poor eating habits, and very infrequently engaged in any kind of exercise. Fast forward to today and KB is a slim 180 and is a very active member of InReach’s “MOOve It” fitness and nutrition program. Funded by the Merancas Foundation, the MOOve It program has been lifechanging for KB. She consistently makes healthy food choices and sets a strong example for her housemates regarding the benefits of sound nutrition and regular exercise. We’re so proud of KB, and most importantly, KB is tremendously proud of herself! Broadening her horizons is what our friend Sharon has been doing over the

past few years. This typically shy woman has ventured outside her comfort zone through the encouragement of her InReach staff, becoming an integral part of the “Cotswold Cuties.” This group of 10 women engage monthly in social and charitable endeavors, ranging from game night to hosting a bake sale to benefit the Homeless Shelter. Sharon even signed on to be an ambassador for InReach’s Safety Committee, a group that meets monthly to ensure safety precautions are in place and adhered to by both staff and program participants. The personal growth and newfound level of confidence we’ve all witnessed in Sharon has been nothing short of amazing! We’ve got a million Celebration Stories of advancements made, obstacles conquered, and victories achieved. All of us with InReach continue to be inspired and buoyed by the resilience shown by our special people day in and day out. We are so proud of each and every one of them!

Color Us Grateful for Artists and Bidders The works of more than 40 talented artists were on “virtual” display during InReach’s “Colors for a Cause” art auction in early December. Local artists were joined by artists from Texas, Georgia, Washington State and beyond to provide beautiful artwork to benefit InReach and our work with the special needs community. As our Crown Town Throwdown cornhole tournament was canceled due to COVID restrictions, InReach was forced to pivot in an effort to recoup a portion of the nearly $80,000 in expected revenue that was lost because of the cancellation. Our first-ever virtual art auction proved to be a popular alternative, helping us raise more than $10,000 solely designated to COVID relief for our program participants experiencing hardships because of the pandemic. We are tremendously grateful for the generosity of our artists and our bidders!

A Few Words from President Lori Gougeon We’re so glad 2021 is here. Last year presented challenges for InReach, and I want to thank everyone who helped us meet those challenges to create positive outcomes. When our Day Support and Activity Centers closed in March, our staff created virtual opportunities, including art, yoga, and dance classes, along with visiting our group homes (outside) and hosting online parties. When we had to cancel Crown Town Throwdown, our Development team created the Colors for a Cause Online Art Auction, which was such great fun we are holding it again this year! The biggest surprise was the success of our Dream Maker VIRTUAL Luncheon. Thanks to all of you, we raised the funds needed to continue to support the programs and services offered by InReach. As we cautiously move forward in 2021, I am optimistic and excited about many new ventures and expansions, including opening our new Charlotte Activity Center, which is four times larger than our current location, and our new Monroe Activity Center, housed in a brand-new building with great amenities. Until we get together again, please take care and stay well.

Why Join the Dream MakerSociety? Have you considered becoming a Dream Maker Society member? It’s a special group of supporters whose generosity year after year helps InReach empower people with disabilities to live their lives as independently as they are able. Seventy-five individuals and families comprise this dedicated group who have pledged to provide $1,000 per year for five consecutive years. Their generosity helps ensure the safety, happiness, health and success of every individual supported by InReach.

“We were aware of InReach because some of Chris’s colleagues had been involved there over the years, but it wasn’t until InReach and Sharon Towers partnered through their “Feeding Assistant Program” that we became fully informed. We feel blessed to be able to support such a wonderful organization that works so hard to serve their precious clientele.” ~ Anne and Chris Moffat Anne Moffat is CEO of Sharon Towers Senior Living Facility. Four InReach program participants have been employed by Sharon Towers for the past four years after completion of the Feeding Assistant Program Certification.

“We are so grateful for InReach, their mission, and all of the services they provide individuals with disabilities. Every human being deserves a full life, a rich life, and a sense of community. We see InReach doing just that through all of their programs for those with intellectual and other disabilities. We have friends who have been involved with InReach, so we wanted to get more involved, and be more intentional with our support. We are so thrilled to be a part of the Dream Maker Society!” ~ Mary Beth and KB McIntyre
