note from your publisher
TWO-YEAR September marks the two-year anniversary of our neighborhood publication! I’m really humbled by all the positive feedback we have received about Stroll Wickford. It’s thanks to you, the residents of the Wickford neighborhoods, as well as all our supportive businesses, that this publication is possible. Thank you! A lot has changed since we were working hard on ramping up this publication. During the pandemic,

very little travel was possible. Those that know me well also know that I live to travel! This summer we were able to take a family trip back home to The Netherlands, and visits to Spain and Greece. We would love to share your travel pictures with your neighbors. Please send them to

at NKHS. I’ll be ready with our camera on those milestone days. We would love to see your back to school photos as well! Please text or email us by Oct. 1 for a collage in an upcoming issue. Gratefully,

PAT R SE
Written by Elizabeth McCabe Photos by Jan Swartz Photography
Pat Rose, a long-standing resident in the neighborhood, has lived in NK since 1952. She resides on Ocean Ave. She comments, “Just sit on my front porch, look at this view, and you’ll know why I’ve stayed all these years.” It’s home sweet home for Pat, and she has many memories through the years. Her late husband, Skip, was born and brought up in her house. Wickford plat, as it is known, has a lot of history in itself. According to her father-in-law, it was called Whiskey Point ages ago because of the rumrunners. There were three sets of twin houses, with most of them torn down and replaced with larger homes. There are not as many summer cottages and small bungalows that make the plat unique, but although, as they say, “that is progress.” Originally, Pat’s family moved here because her father was in the Navy, stationed at Quonset Point, a big presence in the town at that time. Pat explains, “My mother was originally from Iowa, and my father was from Massachusetts. Although he wanted to retire in California, the family decided to stay in Wickford after his death.” Pat attended Wickford Elementary, followed by Wickford Middle on double sessions. She shares, “I was the second class to graduate from the ‘Old Campus’ style high school in 1961.” Pat’s children also went to the ‘old-new high school’ as well. Pat has two children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. “My daughter Tricia and her kids, Aidan and Molly, are the light of my life.” A Rich History Pat’s father-in-law Norman was fire chief and instrumental in getting the first rescue truck into NK. “His uncle John Weston was school superintendent, and his wife Rita was the art supervisor for the schools.” Pat is the last member of her family here in the local area, although a cousin from the “Rose” family is still in Saunderstown. A Talented Hairdresser A valued member of the community, Pat owned a hair salon named Magic Mirror right next to her home. She went to hairdressing school right out of high school 60 years ago and found a profession she loved. In the process, she made people feel better about themselves with her haircuts and more. In return, they became not just customers but friends and family – some into four generations! Her first job was at Jo Bean’s Beauty Salon in front of Bob Bean’s Motel (now Hamilton Village Inn). Then to Shephard’s Department Store in Providence and finally on the Post Road at Artistic

START THE SCHOOL YEAR OFF RIGHT Beauty Salon … as a true Rhode Islander, a description of the places that no longer are! Magic Mirror had been open for 31 years until Pat decided it was time to retire after standing behind the chair for 61 years – although her motto is “Have scissors, will travel.” She still goes to homes for cuts. One of her first customers at her salon was Posie Dollar, who did a watercolor of her salon. That is one of Pat’s prized possessions, “a lasting memory of a big part of my life.”

Popular Pastimes Years ago, Pat belonged to NK Business and Professional Women (NKBPW). She was also a member of the Latecomer’s league at Kingston Bowl for 55 years until COVID-19 closed the lanes down for a while, and the league never went back. One hobby that suits Pat to a tee is golf, which she took up 35 years ago, becoming a member of Rolling Greens. She also loves to travel, especially to sunny beaches and warm water destinations. The girls’ trips to Hawaii, Bermuda, and cruises are top of her list. What is her favorite place on earth? Beavertail in Jamestown, which she likes in all types of weather, as she says, “Good for the soul and peace of mind.” Pat enjoys eating out. One of her favorite places is The Homestead on Route 2. A group of her friends from the class of ’61 gets together once a month to keep in touch and relive what she considers – the best years of her life. “There’s a true community here,” smiles Pat. Although times have changed and people have passed on, there is something about Wickford that resonates with this long-time resident. We are honored to feature Pat in this month’s issue. A long-time resident, she has impacted the community with her heart to serve others as a friend and hairdresser.

READY TO Fall in Love WITH YOUR NEW HOME? Mr. Towne, me (the publisher), and Island Rose Spa owner Meghan White. Photography by Photos by Mary-E
Have you been looking for a makeover? Need advice on what colors to use? Meghan Whyte, the owner of Island Rose Spa, has added the Jane Iredale makeup line alongside the exclusive skin care products they already carry. Meghan is excited to share this amazing makeup line, “It’s not only free of harmful chemicals, but it actually heals and improves the skin.” Last month, Mr. Towne, an internationally renowned makeup artist, came to Island Rose Spa to conduct training for Meghan and her team. Part of the training included several makeovers for some of their clients. I was lucky enough to be one of those. Here’s an inside peak of the makeover

My name is Bella. I am a 4-year-old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd, an Aussie! My mommy and daddy are Michelle and Mark Waterman. I was born on a farm in Tennessee; at 8 weeks old driven to my furever home in Connecticut, where I met my new pawrents! My name was going to be Mia, but mommy held me and said Mia Bella (Italian for my beautiful), so my name became Bella! Being an Australian Shepherd, also known as Aussies, Wigglebutts and farm dogs, I have a lot of energy! So when I was a puppy, I went to training classes and then I did private training. Knowing I needed lots of mental and physical stimulation, my pawrents knew I also needed to know how to act appropriately, and I needed a job! Aussies need to work. I took to my training very well, so my job title was created – the Salon Greeter!
I go to work at Total Look Salon in North Kingstown every day with mommy; she owns the salon and also is a hairstylist! I greet all the clients! They tell me how beautiful and good I am. Don’t worry, I don’t jump, but if you give me love, I’ll stay by your side. Belly rubs and butt scratches are the best! Clients even bring me cookies and presents! I may be considered a high-energy breed, but I am pretty calm for an Aussie. My energy at work is pretty mellow. It’s hard work getting up and down all day to say hello. Mom’s good friend, who lives in Wickford, stops by and brings me to the park for a run and then a stroll through Wickford. I see a lot of people I know. They usually say, “Hey, that’s Bella, the salon dog!” When I take a day off, everyone asks, “Where’s Bella?!” On my days off, mom and dad take me for hikes, walks, and, of course, I do my zoomies in my yard! We play ball, too! I enjoy rides in dad’s truck, and we even take road trips up north to Maine. I am an only child; for now, I am very spoiled. So I’m told! My favorite place in the house is my window seat. Daddy built it specifically for me! The bum got wider as I have grown up. I get to watch all the wildlife. I sit up there every night after work and relax. I have my ice cream – ya, know, frozen yogurt for pups – then go to bed.

financial focus

What Should You Know About IRA Rollovers?
If you’ve been contributing to an IRA, you’ve chosen a great way to save and invest for retirement. All IRAs have potential tax benefits and a range of investment possibilities, but not all IRA providers offer the same features. So, if you decide that your current IRA provider is charging higher fees than you’d like or perhaps doesn’t offer as many investment choices as you want, you might choose to move your IRA assets to another provider. How should you go about making this switch? Here are some options to consider: • Trustee-to-trustee transfer or direct rollover – You can ask the financial institution holding your IRA to move the money directly to another IRA. No taxes will be withheld from the amount transferred at the time of the transfer. This method is generally hassle-free, but some IRA sponsors will still only mail the check to your address of record, so you’d have to forward it to your new IRA. • Indirect rollover – If you take an indirect rollover, also known as a 60-day rollover, the assets from your existing IRA will be liquidated, and the custodian or plan sponsor will send you a check or deposit the funds directly into your bank or brokerage account. This payment may be subject to withholding for federal taxes and possibly state taxes unless you opt out of withholding. You have 60 calendar days from the time the funds were withdrawn to deposit the money, including any amount withheld, into a new IRA. If you miss this 60-day deadline, the withdrawal may be taxable at your personal income tax rate, and it could also be subject to an early withdrawal penalty if you’re younger than 59 ½. Given the immediate withholding and the possibility of further taxes, if you don’t move the money into a new IRA before the 60 days are up, you’ve got much to consider before initiating an indirect rollover. Consequently, you should consult with a financial advisor and tax professional before you make this type of move. In addition to a rollover from an existing IRA, you may someday want to move the money from your 401(k) or a similar employer-sponsored retirement plan to an IRA. This can occur when you retire or change jobs, although if you do take on another job, you might have the option of leaving your 401(k) with your former employer or rolling it over into your new employer’s plan. However, if you want to move your 401(k) funds into an IRA, you can make what’s known as a direct rollover, in which the administrator of your old retirement plan will send you a check made payable to the custodian of your IRA. No taxes will be withheld, but you need to get the funds transferred within 60 days to avoid any potential tax issues. You spend years contributing to your IRA and 401(k) — and for good reason. So, when it’s time to move that money, be careful and consider getting help from your financial and tax professionals. These funds can play a big role in your retirement income, so manage them wisely.

Jane Goodger has lived in Wickford for thirtyseven years and feels it is a “Cool place to live.” She loves everything about the village and is happy to have raised her children here. Perhaps it’s these positive feelings that contribute to her being a “giver” who lives for her community. As Communications and Outreach Manager for the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry in East Providence, Jane employs her writing and organizational skills on a regular basis. However, when not writing for the Academy, she generously shares her many other artistic skills. She’s a published author, has a great eye for good photography and shares her singing voice with the community through participation in the South County Chamber Singers (SCCS) group. Not only does Jane sing with this wonderful group, but she also offers her writing and publicity skills to inform the community about SCCS events and her joy of performing with them. As a teenager, Jane sang with her family and her high school choral group. However, her participation in music groups took a hiatus until a co-worker inspired her to join a local chorus with ties to SCCS. This galvanized Jane to renew her skills and pleasure of singing that she had previously experienced. She is also pleased that her three children have developed a love for art forms such as music, art and filmmaking that bring them pleasure. When we met, Jane spoke of the joy this group has brought her and how she loves to share this with others. She especially wanted to provide information about the group’s concerts and how to join the group. Their next concert, “Broadway & Beyond,” featuring Rodgers & Hammerstein’s works, is scheduled for Oct. 14, 7 p.m., and Oct. 16, 3 p.m., at the Courthouse Center for the Arts in West Kingston. It promises to be a lively and fun event. Tickets can be purchased at the door. You’ll be delighted you treated yourself to this beautiful event.

Grand Opening of
Recently we were able to attend the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new artist gift shop in the North End of NK. If you want to support local artists, definitely stop by this wonderful new store.
HONEY GALLERY!
Honey Gallery is a highly curated gift shop experience created by artists Nancy Reid Carr and Eric Carter. We feature the work of over 40 American artists and artisans, half of which are from Rhode Island. You can find everything from a quick, inexpensive gift to a special one-of-a-kind creation. We offer a unique collection of fine art, ceramics, glass, furniture, jewelry and handmade gifts. The name Honey Gallery stemmed from the observation that artists, much like honey bees, have an innate drive to do their “work” or create. Honey is the fruit of the labor of bees and what you will find in our shop is the “Honey” created by artists. HURRICANE PART II: THE RESCUE
(Part I was published in the Stroll Wickford August)
By Greg Coppa
The tip of the cigar glowed brightly as Andy took another couple of puffs before continuing the story he had obviously told many, many times before. “... After getting the family to safety, the policeman went back to the dock. He again looked towards the shipyard, fixing in his mind where he had to go. Quickly he dropped his gunbelt, stripped off his shirt, and took off his shoes. He was in great physical shape and looked it; although he pretended to resent the men at the station calling him Charles Atlas, he was actually flattered by the comparison. As he evaluated his plan, it never did occur to him that he was about to do something dangerous. He had survived two combat tours of duty in Korea, returning home a decorated hero, but not decorated nearly as much as he deserved to be, according to those who served with him. This was no big deal to him. “Finding the end of the submerged dock with his toes, the policeman took a deep breath and held it as he dove below the surface; with powerful strokes, he swam beneath the mean, white-capped waves towards the opposite bank. Five times he came up for a breath, and five times he disappeared like a porpoise. He clawed through the shallows so he wouldn’t lose ground and crawled up onto a slippery, grassy rise, which would not normally be anywhere near the shore. Without pausing to even catch

his breath, he made his way to the girls’ nearby cottage ... which to his dread, was knocked off its cinderblock foundation. Peering through the broken windows of the house, he called out for the sisters. But there was no sign of them. He made his way to their garage and continued to call out, his words lost in the wind that raged so fiercely that it was difficult for him, even with his great strength and weight, to stay on his feet. He heard faint voices which could only be coming from a few feet away. One of the garage doors opened a crack, then violently swung completely open, pulling one of the sisters with it so that she was then outside in the driving, tropical rain. When she saw the policeman, she just burst into tears. “Sobbing and shaking uncontrollably, Jean threw her arms around him. He scooped her up and brought her back into the garage, where the other sister was calmly sitting on the hood of an old Hudson sedan. She was resting against the
windshield on a pillow, with her braced legs straight out before her. This one nonchalantly told the policeman that she had been saying a rosary for his arrival. With a big, wide grin, he told her that she better start saying another one because it would take at least two to get them back to safety. Quickly he outlined a plan, then effortlessly, he lifted the crippled girl and carried her back to the bank that he had landed on earlier. The water was a foot higher than it had been, and the wind had changed direction as the eye of the storm had passed by. It was clear that they could not stay on this part of the Point much longer – soon, there would be no land above water at all. It was also clear to him that they could not swim back to the town dock. The waves were still too big for him to transport the girl in braces with a lifeguard’s crawl, even if Jean could make it across on her own. The policeman surveyed the wreckage all around him, his gaze settling on a large, wooden picnic table bobbing in
the water a few feet away, ensnared by a telephone pole. Though ungainly, it would have to do. The distance across the channel to the village was not great, the wind would be behind them, and the water was flowing in the general direction they wanted to go.” Andy paused just long enough to lick his lips and launch a couple of smoke rings at a fly on the ceiling. “The policeman made a raft from the picnic table. He made the table float higher by lashing gallon paint and turpentine cans to the submerged seats, using wire yanked from house lamps washed up on the shore and twisted strands of cloth. To calm the waves a little, he opened a cardboard container of Wolfs Head outboard motor oil that he found floating by his feet, and he dumped out its contents on the roiled waters. The slick spread quickly and paved a surprisingly smooth way for the raft. “The young woman with polio was placed prone on the table, her skirt in disarray, all thoughts of modesty long since abandoned. The policeman waded into the water while adjusting a crude harness he had fashioned from an old clothesline. He turned to ask her if she would be able to hold on to the edge of the picnic table. She paused, looked at him with her steady, blue eyes and told him she would hold on as long as he could swim. And for her, that would be no trouble at all, for years of walking with crutches had given her a grip that few women or men would ever possess. The policeman decided right then and there that this plucky woman would be his wife – if she would have him. He smiled broadly before he plunged into the water and began a mighty breaststroke. Jean swam alongside while her sister shouted encouragement from the top of the table. The brave girl with polio never doubted that they were going to make it. “It took what seemed like forever to tug the raft across the neck of the harbor. A hand full of people
waited and watched with fascination from the opposite shore, unable to do anything, but cheering wildly as the big policeman, whose chest bore strange star-shaped scars, emerged from the water with one woman slung over his shoulder and another propped up against him.” Andy stopped his narration and extinguished the short stub of his cigar. Gene was not positive, but it appeared that Andy’s eyes were rimmed with tears. Or maybe it was just the light. Andy remained silent for a moment more before being prompted by Gene. “That is some story, Andy! Whatever became of those people?” There was another pause. “Well, the woman with polio did marry the policeman, and they lived very happily for many years ... the woman was my Aunt Sarah. The policeman quit the force when his father passed on and took over his family’s mom and pop trucking business. His name was Billy Beck.”
While Gene was driving home, he laughed long and deeply to himself. These Rhode Islanders were something! “My boat is just fine. I ran it up on the eelgrass, threw out a stern anchor, and tied off the bow line to a good, strong cedar tree. She rode out the storm without a scratch.” The home office man on the other end of the phone line changed the topic to business. “Forget that account,” said Gene in response to a question. The home office type suggested that maybe Gene was not pursuing the account aggressively enough. “Percy, sitting in New York, you just don’t understand. I have tried,” Gene replied, “but these people here are more complex than you imagine.” The home office type persisted in questioning Gene. “Look,” said Gene firmly, “I can tell you that there is absolutely no chance that we will pick up the Yankee General account ... Got time for a hurricane story, Percy?”

Originally from Coventry, Wayne Johnson started his business Aurora Fuel Co. in 2007 with one truck. He has since grown to a fleet of six delivery trucks and two service trucks. His services have also expanded, and he currently services and repairs heating and air conditioning systems with his team of 12 professionals. “Customer service and pricing set us apart,” says Wayne. According to their website, “When there are savings to be had, we always pass them down to our customers. Our daily price often reflects the lowest priced oil in the area. Without sacrificing quality, we strive to bring you affordable oil to keep your family or your business warm.” Aurora Fuel provides quality and affordable home heating fuel delivery. Commercial heating fuel delivery is also available. Wayne and his staff also provide furnace, boiler and oil tank installation and replacement. In addition, they repair and clean
heating systems and offer A/C system installation and repair.
in or dropped off.” The office staff wore masks, and nonurgent visits from the service department were postponed. People were also more cautious about how much oil they used during the pandemic. Aurora Fuel, which makes its money on the volume of oil, was able to withstand the pandemic and is happy to serve residents.
Tips for Residents Wayne has some tips for residents with fuel tanks. He comments, “Order fuel before you get to ¼ of a tank.” He also recommends service boiler and heating systems annually for efficiency and helps prevent problems, especially with oil-based systems. As for gas-based systems, they don’t need to be serviced as frequently but still need to be serviced. Wayne explains, “You don’t need to be an oil delivery customer with Aurora Fuel in order to schedule servicing of your heating and air conditioning systems.”
We are honored to feature Aurora Fuel Co. in this month’s issue.
Adapting to the Pandemic During COVID-19, Aurora Fuel Co. made many modifications to the safety and protection of their customers. Wayne explains, “We weren’t allowing customers to come to the office anymore. Everything had to be mailed

By HistWick
Ralph Carlyle Porter III, known as Robin, was a founding member of HistWick and a longtime resident of Wickford. He died peacefully in Middlebury, VT, on May 17 after a long, full life of perseverance and dedication to service and tradition. Historic Wickford Inc. (HistWick) was created when Robin Porter, who lived in the old Narragansett Bank on Main Street, contacted several people to invite them to a meeting on a rainy Thursday night in 1988 — or maybe it was 1989. The meeting’s purpose was to discuss re-launching and reinventing the former Main Street Association. Attendees included Ted Seymour, owner of Woodcrafts of Wickford (the wood shop behind the greenhouses on
West Main Street); Dick and Barbara Learned, who lived in Mike Dacey’s house on West Main Street; Dick Carpenter, a prominent local lawyer on Pleasant Street; John Clark, an artist and graphic designer on Main Street (John designed HistWick’s “angel” logo from rubbing of a historic tombstone); and Peter Galster, longtime HistWick member, a current advisor to its board, and an active community member. Pete lives on West Main Street. At that meeting, the group enthusiastically discussed many ideas, including the new group’s purpose and goals, the desired level of political involvement (if any), and a name for the group that would appropriately indicate its intent and
interest — one that could sum it all up. The group named itself Historic Wickford Inc. and almost immediately adopted the nickname, HistWick. HistWick, under Robin’s leadership, developed a mission statement still used by HistWick today. Following the meeting, Robin issued a press release to the local newspaper, The Standard Times. As such, HistWick became officially an unofficial organization until we registered with the government. The HistWick board is indebted to Robin for his vision and leadership. As its leader and as a member, he “nurtured and grew” Historic Wickford Inc., helping it become the vital organization that it is today.
