Making Headway

As we move into our Fall season, the weather continues to delight at MYC. As you may recall, Jade (our Recreation Center Manager and Tennis Pro) brought to us a fun new court sport called Pickle Ball. Unfortunately, our windy, but warm late summer afternoons frequently cause cancellation of Pickle Ball. The ball in this sport is very lightweight, such as a large ping pong ball. The paddles are a bit larger than a ping pong racquet so wind is not a friend of this sport. As you know our late summer and early Fall late afternoons have much lighter warm breezes so we are on again for this fun sport. If you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend it particularly if you used to play tennis or always wanted to play. The courts are smaller, less running and a lot more laughing. The Recreation Center outside renovation has been put on hold as we found issues that require a permit and an engineer’s report. This also meant extra monies would need to be put into this project. I am pleased to say the Board has approved the new “not to exceed” estimate. We have a special reserve fund for this type of unanticipated project, and we will only need a portion of it. I like to consider the “Rec Center” as our bonus club house. A great place for members to hang out when the main clubhouse isn’t staffed. We have used it for games, pool, board retreats, special meetings, sports nights with potluck, and rentals for birthday parties, etc. Our cruise-ins love it too. If you have other ideas on how to use it for members or rentals, please let me or our General Manager know. We look forward to a long life of use in our bonus clubhouse. In my last column I mentioned the Saturday BBQ that 80 people enjoyed. I spoke to a few younger members who told me that Saturday dinner works best for them and their families. Since this BBQ attracted members of all ages, it was truly the best get-together of the year. I would like to see us dedicate

September 2018

one Saturday dinner per month for our members in place of a Friday night dinner. If we pick the week consistently this would help our staff book other events more easily. If you have a favorite Saturday of the month (such as the first, second, third, or fourth,) please let me know. A few years ago one of our Rear Commodores introduced “pop up cruising” as an idea to get more cruising by all of us. I want to encourage others to consider this, but work with the rear commodore so there is no interference with formal cruises. Jim and I recently put one together for a cruise to the Delta where we anchored out for a few days. 2 other boats joined us and we had a wonderful time. This was open to anyone who wanted to join us as we did an invite list and asked those to pass the word to other cruisers. A “pop up cruise” can be lightly attended since members’ calendars are busy, but it is always worth a try. Finally, I want to thank the Nominations Committee for their hard work in putting together next year’s Board nominations. This is hard work, particularly on the Flag level. As I get close to the end of my year, I just want to remind members that committing yourself to the Flag for 3 years is not as scary as it seems. The best situation for a good and easy year is to rely on your Board and Committees to guide you and support the best agenda for the Club. The Nominations Committee will soon reveal the slate to the Board (I am in suspense), and I wanted to thank them for their dedication to providing the future leadership of our Club. See you at the Club and on the water.

General Manager’s Perspective FUN AND PROGRESS We had a vey busy August starting with a couple of fun BBQ’s to test our new equipment and ending with a Congressional visit and Canal Tour. In between we hosted a big wedding for members Joel and Dawn Criste, a class reunion for Marin Catholic High School and too many visiting yacht clubs to list. Everyone had a terrific time, and our small staff handled it exemplary; and Jen has proven herself as an excellent wedding planner. Thank you to everyone involved and to Harold and Poncho for fitting so many boats into our harbor and receiving tons of compliments for their customer service. Thank you also to Scott and his crew for providing delicious meals. The Congressional visit by Jared Huffman and Lt. Colonel Rayfield from the Army Corps of Engineers was initiated by the San Rafael Canal Association, including our members and Directors Craig DeRoy and Jack Going and Port Captain Larry Burnworth and member Art Silberman. Harold and I were invited to join the group on the San Rafael Police Department Boat Mission City. It was a great group including the Mayor and Police Chief of San Rafael as well as Congressional staffers and the District Engineer for the Army Corps. The tour started at our club and proceeded down the canal to the turning basin and back all the way out to the Bay. Mark Hedeen, Captain of the boat used the depth sounder and charts to show how little water is in the canal; and Nadine Urciuoli, Director of the San Rafael Canal Association had a terrific presentation showing pictures of what things looked like at low tide. Our club provided coffee, and someone provided sandwiches that we were given credit for but did not provide. They were delicious. Harold and I had a chance to speak directly with our Congressman and the Lt. Colonel about the importance of dredging to our club and the many visitors that cruise in, including 26 boats coming in for the weekend. We spoke about the difficulty of attracting new members due to the difficulty accessing our harbor during low tides. Any questions about the importance of dredging were answered, and the tour clearly showed what a unique and valuable asset the canal is to the community. A big Thank You to all who made this happen. The dredging ball is rolling. As our fall season approaches we have quite a few cruise-in’s scheduled, a Coastal Clean Up Day and Laser Races on Sept. 15, a road trip to Sonoma on Sept. 19, and a luxurious En Blanc Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 11. More fun coming in October.

Vice Commodore & House Report

Harbor September 2018

Greetings All.

So far what a great summer with lot’s of great activities….!! It was great to see Charlie McBride back in the harbor this week with their new boat, absolutely beautiful!! Welcome home Charlie & Clair.

Not too much excitement around our Club over the past month. You might have noticed that the Rec Center work has been stalled for the past few weeks. Once we opened up the walls, we found substantial damage to the support timbers which required an additional bid and engineering to complete the work. That’s been completed now, and we are proceeding to get everything done and re-painted before our rainy season starts.

The Giants game & South Beach cruise was very successful…. We ended up with nine boats for the weekend, and 28 for the game with several members coming over by car and/or ferry…. Unfortunately the Giants lost, but a good time was enjoyed by all….. The dinner at at South Beach YC Friday evening was great fun, and the members took really good care of us.

We’ve had a couple of events making use of our new BBQ patio and everyone had a great time. The informal committee in charge of bringing this area to life is getting together soon to determine the next steps for completion. We’ll do lots of this work with Club volunteers, but some will need additional funding. The plan right now is to hold a fund-raiser to gain additional support from our members. More on that later. In the meantime, if you’re interested in joining our group for some volunteer labor and camaraderie, just let me know.

Bob Repke, Vice Commodore and House Chair

Just a brief reminder concerning our dog friends and the docks. All dogs, no matter how well trained, are to be on a leash when on the dock. This is for everyone’s safety to insure we do not have any accidental trips into the water. We just hosted this Labor Day weekend a group from the Antioch YC. What a wonderful group of folks!! Maybe next year we should look to see about cruising to their club….?? Our next harbor meeting will include discussions concerning repairs/replacements for B & C docks fingers. If you have input on other requirements please forward to me at your earliest convenience. Only a couple more months before winter, so get out on the water before summer gets away from us. See you on the docks!!

Let us Entertain You! August was a quiet month around the club, BUT September is full of fun events and activities. September 9 is Boats and Bevies, a chance for all members to explore the docks and some boats, meet members, and sample bite and beverages at participating boats. Participating boat members will be on hand to show off their boats and answer questions about the fun of boating. The event starts a 4pm and is followed by a Bar-BQue at the Clubhouse. Hope you all can attend as events like this don’t happen very often. The dock crawl event is free (the Bar-B-Que is not so see WUOTD for the menu and pricing) and hosted by our boat owners, please register in advance so your hosts can plan. September 19 is our visit to Cornerstone in Sonoma. This is more than a winery tour as there are beautiful gardens to explore. Please register by Sept. 17 so that we can arrange transportation. September 22 ( the autumnal equinox) is the night for our Dinner en Blanc. An all white picnic dinner event that began in Paris and has spread all over the world. Please help us celebrate the first day of fall at this special evening. The fun starts at 4pm and culminates well after sunset. The price will be $40++ which includes wine (white of course) at your table. Reservations are required.

Fuel Committee Update Fuel...Fuel...Fuel Our September 18 fuel day was another successful event thanks to Larry, Craig, John , Greg, and Dave. The next fuel days are planned for Oct. 20th and Dec. 15th. However we have to order at least one thousand gallons to have it delivered. It would be very helpful if you can predict your need for fuel on the above dates and if you would sign up on the web site as soon as possible. Many of you have asked about pricing. I can’t predict the price prior to the truck arriving from the refinery. I usually just say you’ll get a good deal. I wondered how good it was so I checked in with 11 marinas that have fuel. We charged $3.69 for diesel and $4.39 for gas. I found prices around the bay for “D” from $5.40 to a low of $4.13 at Sausalito (10% discount for orders over 100 gallons). Gas was the same situation as we charged $3.90. Around the bay, prices fluctuated from a high of $5.28 to a low of $4.50. When you combine our pricing, friendly service and in marina convenience, we are in good shape! Thats it for now.

Safety Concerns about LED Lighting (Published on Aug. 30, 2018 in Scuttlebutt Sailing News online) “A Marine Safety Alert from the U.S. Coast Guard is putting the use of LED lighting on boats under scrutiny. There have been reports to the USCG from crews, ship owners, inspectors and other mariners regarding poor reception on VHF frequencies used for radiotelephone, digital selective calling, and automatice identification systems when in the vicinity of light emitting diode (LED) lighting onboard ships (e.g. navigation lights, search lights and floodlights, interior and exterior lights, adornment.) Radio frequence interference caused by these LED lamps were found to create potential safety hazards such as poor AIS reception. Other ships in different ports have experienced degradation of the VHF receivers, including AIS, caused by their LED navigation lights. LED lighting installed near VHF antennas has also shown to compound the reception. Strong radio interference from LED sources may not be immediately evident to maritime radio users. Nonetheless, it may be possible to test for the presence of LED interference by using the following procedures: 1. Turn off LED lights 2. Tune the VHF radio to a quiet channel 3. Adjust the VHF radio’s squelch control until the radio outputs audio noise. 4. Readjust the VHF radio’s squelch control until the audio noise is quiet, only slightly above the noise threshold 5. Turn on the LED lights. If the radio now outputs audio noise, then the LED lights have raised the noise floor. (noise floor is generally the amount of interfering signals/ static received beyond the specific signal or channel being monitored) 6. If the radio does not output audio noise, then the LED lights have not raised the noise floor. If the noise floor is found to have been raised, then it is likely that both shipboard VHF marine radio and AIS reception are being degraded by LED lighting. In order to determine the full impact of this interference, the Coast Guard requests those experiencing this problem to report their experiences to Coast Guard Navigation Center.”

SALMON SPLASH! Dear Members,

I want to declare that John Likas has won (unofficially)* the 2018 Marin Yacht Club Salmon Derby. ‘Highest Average Weight’ goes to John, and ‘Biggest Fish’ goes to Ray Doving. As some of you may know, I reluctantly cancelled the Derby this year at the last minute (day), due to bad weather and 'down boats'. But we all know the weather will turn, and we can again get out the 'Gate' for these most prized species and culinary delights. John headed out the gate early aboard the ‘Emerald Quest’ on August 22, 2018, with a crew of four; Ray Doving, 'J.W.', Dave Acebo, and John Connor, all in great anticipation of a day’s salmon fishing: the ocean was flat, and fish were close (five miles off Muir Beach). What could be better? I received the first text from John about 12 noon: "7 in the box.” I could only kick myself for not being on board, but glad they were having a good day. But then about an hour later I got the second text: "#8, 42 lbs.” Holy cow!! I couldn't believe it, but I did. I wondered who it was that caught the big one. I met the boat at the dock at 5 pm as the team was cleaning and filleting the fish. They (the fish that is), were all beautiful, in the 15 to 20 pound range; except for one - the 'monster’- what a gorgeous Salmon! Ray described to me the 'fight’: "It took 40 minutes to get him in; the fish was tired, but I was more tired; I had to sit down a couple of times and just hang on..." Later John described to me how Ray got the fish to boat 3 times before they were able to net it (John at the net); " it wouldn't come in, we couldn't get the fish close enough; finally I told Dave put the engines in neutral, we slowed, and I slid the net under him. It took both of us to lift him aboard." A great fish story; and it’s all true. Congratulations to John and Ray, and the entire crew!!

Clive Endress Chairman Marin Yacht Club Salmon Derby * Sorry Boys, ’unofficially’ means no cash prizes. But don’t despair, all on board will receive an official 2018 MYC Salmon Derby Hat.

S.E.A. Mini Camp

Dear Marin Yacht Club, This summer we were so lucky to attend sail camp at Loch Lomand Marina. We were in the mini camp with 8-10 year olds.  Our counselors (all former campers) led us on daily sailing adventures. We took turns steering, working the sails and rigging, and looking for sea creatures!  Our counselors also taught us how to tie knots and prepare the boats for sailing. At the end of our week we were invited on an 80 foot sail boat. We learned about how sailors live on a boat for long periods of time, how to chart maps, and more about sea life! It was the best week of our summer, and we can’t wait to return next year! We highly recommend this camp. Thank you to Marin Yacht Club for the scholarship. We are sailors for life!
