New Limitation of Actions Act set to be proclaimed Legislation that sets standard time limits to file civil lawsuits will come into force Sept. 1. The Limitation of Actions Act was introduced last fall with amendments added this spring. The act establishes a two-year basic limitation period, including for personal injury or breach of contract. It also creates an ultimate limitation period of 15 years for claims, which may not be discovered right away, such as undetected medical complications from surgery. This gives Nova Scotians up to 15 years from the date of an action or omission to start a civil lawsuit. Victims of sexual misconduct and those abused in an intimate or dependent relationship can now file a civil lawsuit against their abuser no matter when the event happened. More information can be found at http://novascotia.ca/just/documents/Limitation-of-ActionsAct.pdf

OH&S News - Aggressive Sales Calls from Private Providers of Workplace Health and Safety Training and Posting Requirements The Occupational Health and Safety Division periodically receives calls from employers who are themselves receiving aggressive, high-pressure and sometimes misleading calls from private providers of workplace health and safety training specifically WHMIS, safety poster requirements, on-line first aid training, as well as Violence in the Workplace Regulations training requirements. Regarding WHMIS the private provider caller implies the need for annual training and/or posting of particular safety posters to be in compliance with the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Legislation. For sales calls about on-line first aid training the caller states that all persons at the workplace need first aid training. For sales calls on the Violence in the Workplace regulations the caller is implying that training is required. The requirements on all of these items may vary depending on the company type and size. If you have any reservations and/or questions about what is required to be in compliance with any type of OHS training, please contact the OHS Division at 1-800-952-2687. Earlier this year, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) also issued a warning about the aggressive sales tactics by some training providers. In some cases, it found companies were giving the impression they represented the government, and were indicating the training was required or endorsed by the provincial workplace jurisdiction. Employers who wish to file a complaint on the tactics of a company soliciting products and training services can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
Gender and Health Promotion Studies Survey
The Gender and Health Promotion Studies Unit at Dalhousie University is currently conducting an online survey on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) health in Nova Scotia. They would greatly appreciate your support in raising awareness about this survey and kindly ask that you share the survey information. What is this survey about? There is currently very little data on the health of LGBTQ populations in Nova Scotia. The purpose of this online survey is to better understand the health needs and experiences of LGBTQ populations from across the province. The findings of this survey will be used to inform the development of a Nova Scotia-specific LGBTQ health assessment tool. Who can participate? To be eligible to participate in this study you must self-identify as LGBTQ, speak English, be 16 years of age or older and have lived in Nova Scotia for at least one year OR be a health care provider/health care professional in Nova Scotia. What will I be asked to do? This survey should take 45 minutes to complete at maximum. The questions in this survey are closed-ended and open-ended. There are also a few demographic questions to help us learn more about the demographics of LGBTQ people living in Nova Scotia. Participation in this survey is voluntary and anonymous. https://surveys.dal.ca/opinio/s?s=28775
