SHORT PROFILE OF THE DIOCESE OF WIAWSO 1. PREAMBLE The Diocese of Wiawso, the 9th and the newest Diocese in Ghana was carved out from the Diocese of Sekondi of the Western Region. The Diocese was inaugurated on Saturday, 18th February, 2006 and the Consecration and Enthronement of the first Bishop of the Diocese in the person of the Rt. Rev. Abraham K. Ackah took place on the 10th and 11th June, 2006 respectively. The carving out of Wiawso Diocese was the vision of the first Bishop of Sekondi Rt. Rev. T. S. A. Annobil during a Synod which was held in 1991. He informed Synod even at that time that the work load in the Diocese was too much for a single Bishop to manage. He thus paved the way for the carving out of Wiawso from that vast area of his jurisdiction. 2.

6. CLINICS There are three small clinics situated at Bodi, Boinzan, and Subiri. Plans are advanced to establish two more at Elluokrom and Ahokwaa and to develop the Bodi clinic into a hospital. Any assistance to develop this sector will also be appreciated. 7. STRENGTHS Besides the clinics, the Diocese can boast of large parcels of land which will be good for the cultivation of crops like cocoa, oil-palm, corn, cassava citus fruits etc. efforts are being made to find some capital to begin work on the farms in a large scale. Meanwhile, a Diocesan Agricultural Officer has been appointed to be in charge of the farms. 8. CHALLENGES The Diocese is situated in the forest region of Ghana. The inhabitants are rural dwellers and basically subsistent farmers. A few of them have small cocoa farms. As a result, majority of the people are relatively poor. Their contribution in terms of money is comparatively small. The new Diocese is faced with several challenges that include the following: -
-
Church Expansion: The area is vast and virgin. There is the need to do serious evangelism, establish more congregations and schools. Training and Retraining: There is the need to train and retrain more Priests, Catechists and Evangelists, to minister to the people. Provision of Water and Sanitation: In many areas treated water is absent. The Church is called upon to provide boreholes and Hang-Dug wells for the communities. To provide at least a well-organized multi-purpose Vocational/Technical Institution for the several Junior High Schools graduates and drop outs. To establish multi-purpose farms to produce cocoa, oil-palm and other cash crops to support Diocesan programmes. To provide vehicles (Cars for Bishop, Priests and Motor Bikes for Catechists and Evangelist) for effective Pastoral work. To provide a permanent residence (Bishop’s Court) for the Bishop. To provide the Diocese with permanent offices for the Bishop and Diocesan staff.
-
To put up a Retreat and Prayer centre for the Diocese. To find assistance to absorb salaries for Bishop and Clergy.
It is therefore our wish to seek partnership as wide as possible in the world wide Anglican Communion. The Sefwi area in which the Diocese is situated, as already re-iterated is poor in terms of infrastructure, social amenities like quality health care, educational facilities and the utilities. Unfortunately, the process for the establishment of the New Diocese of Wiawso did not have the fortune of any financial support from any quarters and had to shoulder the solution of the myriad problems unaided. Accordingly, the way forward demands an all-round short-to-medium-term development of the Diocese to make the message of God more meaningful to our rural people. We would sincerely appreciate if you could find time to visit us at your earliest convenience to enable you have personal experience of the Diocese. 9.
CONCLUSION
It is gratifying to note that the Diocese of Wiawso has a bright future. Even though majority of the parishioners are either peasant farmers, or low income earners they are very enthusiastic and proud of their Church. They are always eager to contribute their best however small to support, especially evangelism work in the Diocese. They would love to receive you into their fold at your earliest convenience. Please, continue to pray for us and let us hear favourably from you. LIST OF PARISHES AND CLERGY 1.
