THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY PRESENTS STUDENTS OF THE YEAR. The Students of the Year campaign consists of a select group of individuals, from different locations and walks of life, coming together for a greater purpose: curing cancer. Candidates in this philanthropic competition form powerful fundraising teams to help them find innovative ways of fueling The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) goal to end blood cancer. With their teammates behind them, this exceptional group competes in honor of a local blood cancer survivor for the prestigious title of Students of the Year. We are one family. Connected by blood. Driven to find cures.
THANK YOU TO OUR LEADING SPONSOR
WELCOME TO THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY’S 2021 STUDENTS OF THE YEAR Greetings, On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), welcome to the Grand Finale of the Silicon Valley Students of the Year campaign. While we may be gathering in a virtual format, we are delighted you have joined us. There is no doubt that this year’s campaign has felt a little bit different than in years past. For that reason, I am beyond thrilled to congratulate each candidate and team member on their fundraising efforts, and personally want to express my gratitude for going above and beyond to ensure we move our mission forward. It is an honor to celebrate each of you tonight– thank you for caring so deeply about our patients and their families. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer, funding breakthrough research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures, and providing support and advocacy for patients. The critical funds raised through Students of the Year ARE making an impact. Thank you! As our candidates, team members, family and cheerleaders who have learned in over the last 7 weeks– LLS is unstoppable in their quest to cure blood cancers. In 2020, despite everything happening around us, 17 blood cancer treatment options approved by the FDA – and 14 of those were funded by LLS, thanks to incredible volunteers and donors like you. 70 years of fighting blood cancers has led us to a game-changing belief Beating Cancer is in Our Blood. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our amazing Leadership Team and Legacy Committee, who tirelessly recruited this year’s candidate class. On behalf of the LLS, we thank each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication. We are so grateful to our new and longstanding volunteers for their support. This evening, you will have the opportunity to meet some of our volunteers, our Boy of the Year, Kabir, paying tribute to her blood cancer journey. Kabir, along with all of our patients, gives us a reason to never give up in our pursuit of finding cures for all blood cancers. Thank you for joining this fight. Best of luck to all of our 2021 candidates! Sincerely, Renée Croteau Executive Director, Northern California Region

MEET OUR HONORED HERO
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Kabir Vinayak Taunk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Kabir is an 8-year-old boy who is very affectionate, loving, and sweet. He is caring by nature and an amazing older brother to his younger sibling, Ayaan. His favorite activity is to play endlessly and go on excursions with Ayaan, who has been his best friend through this difficult journey. Kabir was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the spring of 2017. Kabir’s fight against cancer has been a very tough one and one that would not have even been possible as little as a decade and a half ago. Kabir has benefited from many new treatments including Dasatinib, a drug that specifically targets his chromosomal mutation, CAR-T, an immunotherapy that used Kabir’s own T-cells to fight the cancer, and haploidentical transplant, a treatment for individuals that don’t have a perfect bone marrow match. Each of these have shown promise in the search for a cure.
